Joe plays trumpet, pocket cornet, and tenor – and the rest of the group features Reggie Marks on saxes, Tyrone Crabb on bass, and Ernest Bostic on drums and vibes. Six months before that gig, the same group performed at Holy Cross – recorded, but never issued until now. Fantastic work from one of the most overlooked alto talents of all-time! This beautiful CD features tracks from Sonny's 3 rare albums on Imperial – Jazz USA, Go Man, and Plays Cole Porter. The records were all recorded in 1956 – and they feature some of the strongest bop playing to ever come out of LA, total proof that that city wasn't always noodling around with cool jazz during the 50s! Sonny plays alto so well you want to cry – and every note is perfectly placed, with just the right mix of technical skill and warm soulful humanity. Most of this material has only ever been reissued in Japan – and the CD includes wealth of excellent cuts like "If I Had You", "I Love You", "Wailin With Joe", "West Coast Blues", "Criss Cross", "Ham's Blues", and "Blue Friday" – but the whole thing's great! Few people could make a session cook like Johnny Griffin in his early years – and this late 50s sextet date is great proof of that fact! The album's a relaxed, open, almost unstructured set that might be dubbed a "blowing session", were it not for the tightness of the players and the relatively unified feel of the date. Griffin's tenor is very firmly in the lead, and he's very clearly the leader here – helping shape the sound of the group that includes Donald Byrd on trumpet, Pepper Adams on baritone, Kenny Drew on piano, Wilbur Ware on bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drums. There's some really hard-wailing extended numbers that come across as full-on hardbop workouts – really driving things along as you might guess with a rhythm section like that in action – but other tunes show some more fully-fleshed sounds from the group – that slight undercurrent of modern expression that was always present in Griff's music. Titles include "Johnny GG", "Catharsis", "Stix Trix", and "What's New" – plus a take on "Woody N You" that just has Griffin wailing along with the rhythm section! CD

A fantastic session of 60s "new thing" jazz – and one of our favorite early records by Joe Henderson – exactly the kind of album to show why his emergence in the decade was such an important new voice in jazz! The album features some incredibly hard playing from Joe – with a very dark edge to his solos that's nicely offset by McCoy Tyner's lyrical piano, and the supple rhythms of Bob Cranshaw on bass and Elvin Jones drums – a really magical quartet who come across very different here than you might expect from the Coltrane legacies of Tyner and Jones! Instead, Henderson makes his presence known right from the very first note – as his voice on the tenor is completely singular – and titles include the Henderson originals "Inner Urge", "Isotope" and "El Barrio" – plus the great Duke Pearson song "You Know I Care", and the standard "Night & Day". Rare material that was originally recorded in 1972 by organist Larry Young – some of his most outside material ever, and done with a bunch of young musicians who wail on all of these weird electronic instruments! The set's way wilder even than any of Young's albums that were issued at the time – including the classics with his group Fuel, or even his Lawrence of Newark album – and the album's got loads of wild, very noisy synth sounds and crazy percussion! The tunes come across as sheets and sheets of white noise – with Larry's organ going all over the place in freewheeling solos and groovy rhythm lines. Young plays Hammond, and other instrumentation includes Joe Gallivan on synth, percussion, drums, and steel guitar; Nicholas on guitar synth, ring modulator, hi-tension wires, wind, rain, and thunder (!); and Jimmy Molneiri on drums and percussion. A killer, and one of three live sides that Hammond organ genius Brother Jack McDuff cut for Prestige during the 60s – a monster session of stretched-out jazzy grooves, with many fine little dancers, and a raw soulful feel throughout! The group's one of Jack's best – as Red Holloway's tenor blows and hollers over the fingerpoppin' grooves delivered by a young George Benson on his first major guitar gig – and the soulful drums of Joe Dukes scatter across the place, taking the whole band into some incredible rhythms! The Ebony Godfather is grooving here with a set of fuller backings – sweet clubby funk, arranged and conducted by Brad Baker (of B Baker Chocolate Company fame) – all as a showcase for Joe's sweet work on flute and tenor sax! There's a fair bit of keyboards on the tunes – played by Pat Rebillot and Barry Miles – and Steve Gadd's playing the drums on the date, which helps the rhythms keep a bit of an edge, even amidst the larger backing. A totally great take on the Joe McPhee funky classic "Shakey Jake" – done in a way that's tighter and even more compact than the original – but with some fantastic horn work throughout! There's lots of riffing guitar next to organ over fast-romping drums – and the tenor, trumpet, and other horns criss-cross in this really wonderful way! "Night Dream" is a slower number with a wide-open approach to funk – great drums and congas slow-stepping together to set up the groove – then warmed up by a nice long solo on Fender Rhodes! A really different record from drummer Joe Farnsworth – a player we always love for a rock-solid approach to his music, but who here is clearly opening up a new chapter in his life – one that really offers a great variation on the sorts of expectations you might have when you see his name on a record! The record's got a gentle flow that's different than the usual Farnsworth drive – with the drummer laying back, and letting some electric elements in the group flow nicely – including the piano and Fender Rhodes of Julius Rodriguez, guitar of Kurt Rosenwinkel, and alto of Immanuel Wilkins – all players we've never heard with Joe before. Bassist Robert Hurst is as rock-solid as always – and titles include a wonderful remake of the spiritual classic "In What Direction Are You Heading", plus "Safe Corners", "Bobby No Bags", "Someday We'll All Be Free", "Filters", "Terra Nova", and "Anyone But You". Amazing music from Jimmy Giuffre – and a much-needed document of this under-recorded time in his career! The 2CD set brings together two different live performances – each done two years after his groundbreaking Free Fall album for Columbia, and with a sound that's even more far-reaching than that classic set! The Giuffre heard here is extremely free on his reeds – especially clarinet, which is blown at a level that prefaces countless European free jazz work to come – with an incredible range of sounds, colors, and tones. Giuffre also plays tenor – with more bite and soul than ever before – almost at an ESP sort of level – and the accompaniment on both sessions is very loose and free, too – with Joe Chambers on drums on both concerts – working with Richard Davis on bass on a trio set, and with a quartet that includes Don Friedman on piano and Barre Phillips on bass. The whole thing is mindblowing – a chapter of this amazing musician's career that demands to be heard – and stands as even more of a revelation than other Giuffre releases in recent years. Two classic greasy grooves – hot off the grill from chef Jack McDuff! Hot Barbeque is one of our favorite all-time Jack McDuff albums, and one that features his classic quartet in totally amazing form. George Benson's wailing on guitar, and proving that he was a genius, even at this tender young age (and in fact, maybe only at this age!), Red Holloway's on tenor, and the amazing Joe Dukes' is skipping away on drums, dancing all over the place under Brother Jack's great groovy solos. With the short vocal ditty that comprises the title cut, plus other long groovers including "The Party's Over", "Happy Dip", and "Cry Me A River". All this, and the cover's got a great photo of Jack chompin' on a slab of ribs! The other half of this CD is one of three live sides McDuff cut, all with similar covers, but this one's got the red and orange lettering. Red Holloway blows and hollers over the fingerpoppin' grooves delivered by a young George Benson on his first major gig, and the soulful drums of Joe Dukes. The tunes are mostly originals by the group members, done in the boppish mode of Clarke's classic years –but which also feature many of the soul jazz inflections of the players involved – on titles that include "For Klook" "Work Song", "The Man From Potter's Crossing", "Locksley", and "Jamaican Hot Nights". An album dedicated to the great Django Reinhardt – but one that also comes across with plenty of west coast touches too – just what you'd expect for the meeting of the young Joe Pass and the Pacific Jazz label! The format is somewhat Django-esque – with lead guitar work from Joe Pass, plus rhythm guitar support from John Pisano – creating some of the guitar interplay you'd have in a gypsy swing record – but the groove's also a bit more modern than some of Django's classics, and there's a lighter, breezier approach here that's very much in the mode of other Pass records from the 60s – at least the small group ones! The whole thing makes for a very unique set from Pass – with the quartet rounded out with Jim Hughart on bass and Colin Bailey on drums – on titles that include "Django", "For Django", "Fluer D'Ennui", "Django's Castle", and "Nuages". CD

Tenorist Grant Stewart takes on the music of Ellington and Strayhorn – but in a sweet small combo mode that's nicely swinging, and a lot more relaxed than the standard Ellington mode! The tunes have a strong focus on Stewart's rich tenor tone – blown in an easygoing, open way – but with a great degree of sharpness, too – a rare blend that's made Grant one of the leading tenor talents of his generation. Rhythm is never too intrusive, and handled by Tardo Hammer on piano, Paul Gill on bass, and Joe Farnsworth on drums – on titles that include "The Feeling Of Jazz", "Raincheck", "Angelica", "Tonight I Shall Sleep", "Star Crossed Lovers", and "Something To Live For". CD

Three full albums from funky reedman Joe Thomas – served up in a single set! On Feelings From Within, the Ebony Godfather is grooving with a set of fuller backings – sweet clubby funk, arranged and conducted by Brad Baker (of B Baker Chocolate Company fame) – all as a showcase for Joe's sweet work on flute and tenor sax! There's a fair bit of keyboards on the tunes – played by Pat Rebillot and Barry Miles – and Steve Gadd's playing the drums on the date, which helps the rhythms keep a bit of an edge, even amidst the larger backing. Some cuts have backing chorus vocals, in a style used on other Thomas albums – and although definitely touched by a bit of disco fever, the album's still got a jazzy element too – like some of the crossover club sessions on the Kudu label from the 70s! Titles include "Funky Fever", "Feelins From Within", "Polarizer", "Coco", "Galaxy Dreamin", and "Venus". Make Your Move is sweet clubby grooving from Joe Thomas – a set that has the Ebony Godfather smoothing his groove a bit for the disco years of the late 70s, but still keeping things plenty soulful throughout! Brad Baker (of B Baker Chocolate Company fame) arranged and conducted the album, and he brings in some added vocals to the session – starting most tunes with a bit of singing before the instrumentalists get to solo in the grooves. The approach still works plenty darn well, though – and there's some great numbers here that slide in a bit of moogy vamping, in a way that's somewhat like some of Thomas' previous Ebony Godfather records. Titles include the funky "Caught You Lying Again", the smooth stepper "Let Me Be The One", and the tracks "Sugar Smack", "Get On Back", "Make Your Move", and "Your Love Is So Good To Me". On Masada, the cover's a bit righteous, but the grooves are wonderfully smooth – that shift towards warmer, club-based styles that Joe Thomas took in the 70s – an approach that comes off surprisingly well! Brad Baker's handling most of the arrangements here – with a fusion of jazz, funk, and club that's similar to some of the work coming out of the CTI/Kudu labels during the same stretch – and Joe's use of tenor sax on the album almost comes off like Stanley Turrentine in a similar setting, although with a bit less bite. Instrumentation includes keyboards, horns, and strings – and there's also a slight bit of chorus vocals on a few tracks too. Titles include "Poinciana", "Flame", "Let's Love", "Gemini Flyin' High", "I'm Gone & I'm Glad", and "Masada". CD

Just the right sort of setting to unlock all the majestic power of David S Ware at his best – that tremendously soulful tone on tenor, and one that rivals Billy Harper when operating at a level of this nature! The performance is a live one, and features Ware in the company of guitarist Joe Morris, drummer Warren Smith, and bassist William Parker – the last of whom provides that trademark pulse that always seems to set Ware on fire – an inspiring sort of rhythm that really pushes his horn to searing, searching new heights! Tracks are all quite long, with a spiritual feel – and Ware also plays a bit of kalimba on the record, which is always a nice touch. Titles include "Nataraj", "Reflection", "Namah", "Crossing Samsara", "Shakti", and "Antidromic". CD

Ravi Coltrane's first album for Blue Note – put together here with production help from Joe Lovano, who also plays a bit of guest tenor too! The album's got a really dark edge – and really works strongly in those edgier sides of the spectrum – those modes that Coltrane's developed best in the past decade or so – which are almost more saxophonic elements of a maturing Wayne Shorter than they are those of his famous father! Ravi's got a good sense of space between his notes – never bridging the gaps with flurries of sound, and instead making these bold statements that swing together nicely, with help from a lineup that includes Geri Allen and Luis Pedromo on piano, James Genus and Drew Gress on bass, and EJ Strickland and Eric Harland on drums. In addition to tenor from Lovano on two tracks, the set also features some guest trumpet from Ralph Alessi – on titles that include "The Change My Girl", "Spirit Fiction", "Klepto", "Roads Cross", "Cross Roads", "Yellow Cat", and "Check Out Time". A massive bit of funk – and from 70s France, no less! These guys clearly come from a jazz-based background – and have absorbed some of the best electric influences of their time – working in a keyboard-heavy mode that's clearly inspired by Herbie Hancock, Joe Zawinul, and George Duke – yet also kicking up a groove that's a bit more down and dirty, and more in the instrumental funk mode overall. The sound of the set's incredible – really raw, riffy, and filled with plenty of snapping hard grooves – and the used of the keys is sublime throughout, changing mood from track to track, but always staying funky! A classic early set from Jack McDuff – and a record that's very much in his own hands, despite the presence of Gene Ammons as a co-leader! The group's more of a McDuff one than an Ammons ensemble – and features the great Joe Dukes on drums, Eddie Diehl on guitar, and Harold Vick on tenor, who plays alongside Ammons' guest appearance on 5 of the album's 6 tracks. The tunes are in that Steppin Out mode – a cross between Jack's gutbuckety R&B work of the early Prestige years, and some of his cleaner grooves of the mid 60s – and titles include "Mellow Gravy", "Watch Out", "Strollin", "Buzzin Round", and "Mr Clean". The first-ever album of studio duets between Joe McPhee and Mats Gustafsson – quite a surprise, given how often their paths have crossed over the years! The set was recorded in 2007, but only issued many years later – and it's a key document of the power that both improvisers have at this point in their career – each receiving strong global attention and facing new discovery by audiences nobody would have expected to be there for free jazz in the new millennium – but also able to completely put aside their egos and work together with the kind of sensitive interplay that only comes when you've got two masters in a rare moment like this. Sonically, the whole thing is very textural – maybe initially informed by that style that Gustafsson has of exploring all the outer reaches of a saxophone, from the tip of the reed right down to the surface of the pads – as he blows baritone, slide sax, and alto fluteophone – and McPhee works on pocket trumpet, alto, and alto clarinet. Titles include "Suicide Chicken Wings Over Nickelsdorf", "Bat Cave Feast", "Just Blue", "Just Green", "Race Matters", and "Blame Game". CD

A very cool, surprisingly righteous album from trumpeter Bobby Bryant – maybe the hippest set he ever cut, and a record that features some great larger arrangements that are overflowing with soul! The set features work from Charles Owens and Herman Riley on tenors, Dennis Budimir on guitar, Joe Sample on piano, and Henry Cain on organ – and the whole thing has a wonderfully groovy vibe! An excellent set that brings together 2 rare albums from the 50s! Sonny Criss At The Crossroads is an obscure 1959 session recorded by Criss in Chicago, and it's one of the only jazz records ever on the Peacock label, which put out mostly gospel and blues. Criss is joined by Joe Scott on piano, and the Chicago rhythm section of Bob Cranshaw and Walter Perkins, both fresh from the MJT+3. Great tone, warm solos, and a nice vibe throughout. Tracks include "You Don't Know", "Butts Delight", "Softly", and "Sylvia". Kenny Dorham & The Jazz Prophets is a fantastic lost hard bop album, featuring Kenny Dorham leading a tight quintet that stars J.R. Monterose on Tenor. Monterose and Dorham are great, and really open up on the 5 tracks on the album – all of which are long enough to give the players plenty of room to blow. Probably one of the best jazz records ever recorded for ABC, and with the titles "The Prophet", "DX", "Tahitian Suite", and "Blues Elegante". LP, Vinyl record album

A perfect setting for the rich-voiced tenor of the great George Coleman – presented here as one of the best titles so far in the strongly-revived Live At Smalls series! Smalls is one of those players who's been on countless albums over the years, and turned out plenty of great work – but who also seems to come across with a freshness, a newness in a key live recording like this – much the same way that a player like Johnny Griffin could always show that at the core, jazz can be a spontaneous expression that's sometimes best presented in an unfettered sort of space. The core group is just right for Coleman, and often step back to give him plenty of space – Spike Wilner on piano, Peter Washington on bass, and Joe Farnsworth on drums – and titles include "Blues For Smalls", "When Sunny Gets Blue", "At Last", "Four", "Meditation", and "My Funny Valentine".
