Jimmy GiuffreTangents In Jazz (part 2) ... 7-inch
Capitol, 1955. Very Good (pic cover)... $1.99 3.99
One of Jimmy Giuffre's excellent early recordings for Capitol, and a nice blend of west coast styles with more modernist experimentation. Here, Giuffre begins his experiments in jazz without a "non-pulsating beat", that is, jazz without snapping cymbal, walking bass, or pounding piano to provide a steady pulse. The group includes Ralph Pena on bass, Artie Anton on drums, and Jack Sheldon on trumpet, and the four musicians play together in beautifully fragile little lines, which arc up and back, and come together with a sense of grace and surprise. Tracks include "The Leprechaun", "Scintilla Three" & "This Is My Beloved". (Funky 45's, Jazz) 7-inch, Vinyl record
(Cover has ring wear and patchy stuck-on paper at the bottom, light surface wear & aging.)

✨✧ Modern Jazz Quartet With Jimmy GiuffreModern Jazz Quartet At Music Inn – Guest Artist Jimmy Giuffre ... LP
Atlantic, 1956. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great addition to the Modern Jazz Quartet – as the clarinet of Jimmy Giuffre brings a sharp modern edge to the record! The album's similar to the other MJQ Music Inn date with Sonny Rollins – and shows how the addition of a reed player can really unlock new colors, tones, and possibilities in the sounds of the group. And in this case, given the Giuffre's at the height of his early powers – coming off some sublime trio dates for Atlantic – the pairing of players is completely sublime! Titles include "A Fugue At Music Inn", "Serenade", and "Fun". LP, Vinyl record album
(Black label pressing with deep groove. Cover has minimal wear & looks nice overall!)

✨✧ Jimmy GiuffreFree Fall ... LP
Columbia, 1963. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
An incredible batch of freely crafted tracks from Jimmy Giuffre's legendary early 60s trio! The group features Steve Swallow on bass and Paul Bley on piano, and the two young modernists were a perfect match of Giuffre's ever-developing ideas of freedom and harmony. The music is beautiful – with a sound that's like nothing else we can describe, and an approach that's free floating (or free falling), but never directionless, and never overindulgent. Perfectly measured, with a strong sense of melody and rhythm, even amidst the more outside moments. Titles include "Propulsion", "Threewe", "Dichotomy", "Man Alone", and "Divided Man". LP, Vinyl record album
(2 eye mono pressing. Cover has some light wear, but this is a great copy.)

✨✧ Jimmy GiuffreMusic Man ... LP
Atlantic, Late 50s. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
The Music Man, made different – thanks to very fresh arrangements from Jimmy Giuffre – heard here in one of his few large group sessions for Atlantic Records! The music is all from the score of the famous show, but Giuffre really reworks things with some sharp modern jazz edges – inventive rhythms from bassist Wendell Marshall and drummer Ed Shaugnessy – and no use of piano at all, which allows for plenty of free play in the horn section – which features Giuffre on tenor, clarinet, and baritone – plus Al Cohn and Eddie Wasserman on tenor, Joe Wilder and Phil Sunkel on trumpets, and Sol Schlinger on baritone sax. Without any vocals, and with Jimmy's unique structures, these tunes take on some very fresh styles – and titles include "Marian The Librarian", "The Wells Fargo Wagon", "Iowa Stubborn", "Gary Indiana", and "It's You". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original black label pressing with deep groove. Cover has light wear and aging.)

✨✧ Lee KonitzYou & Lee – Lee Konitz Plays Jimmy Giuffre Arrangements ... LP
Verve, 1959. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A beautiful lost session from Lee Konitz – one that has him blowing beautifully over larger backings penned by Jimmy Giuffre – all done with that great blend of modern and swing that Jimmy was bringing to his best work of the 50s! Bill Evans and Jim Hall provide support in the rhythm section, using their fluid styles of piano and guitar to gently swing the tunes without pushing too much on the bottom – so that Lee's flowing solos on alto are allowed to glide majestically over the top! The Konitz presented here is a rare one, and an extremely charming player who's more concerned with tone and soul than on some of his other more modern outings of the time. Titles include "I Didn't Know About You", "You Are Too Beautiful", "The More I See You", "Everything I've Got Belongs To You", and "You're Driving Me Crazy". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Anita O'DayCool Heat – Anita O'Day Sings Jimmy Guiffre Arrangements ... LP
Verve, 1959. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Very cool work from Anita O'Day – a session cut with Jimmy Giuffre arrangements, in a style that's a bit different than some of her other 50s work for Verve! Jimmy brings a nice touch of modernism to the record – casting the horns in ways that show his own love of creative colors and careful phrasing, which makes for a bit more sensitivity than you'd hear on some of her dates with Billy May. Anita really responds to this shift with her vocals – stepping around the tunes carefully, and seeming to slide in alongside Giuffre's horn charts in a really fresh way. The vibe's a bit like that of June Christy on Capitol with Pete Rugolo – which is a great recommendation to us – and titles include "Hershey Bar", "A Lover Is Blue", "Mack The Knife", "You're A Clown", and "Orphan Annie". (Vocalists, Jazz) LP, Vinyl record album

Columbia, 1954. Near Mint- ... $5.99
A great collection of work from one of the hippest bandleaders to emerge in the swing generation – and one of the few to be able to tie his approach to the growing worlds of modern jazz and jump jive too! The set features material from Woody Herman's first three "herds" – the first, his initial recording group with Columbia; the second, his groundbreaking group with the "four brothers" group of horn players who included Stan Getz and Jimmy Giuffre; and the third his mid 50s revival group that had Ralph Burns turning in some great modern arrangements to rework that four brothers sound. The set features very lively notes from Woody himself – and titles include "Non Alcoholic", "Caldonia", "Good Earth", "Four Brothers", "Early Autumn", "Third Herd", "Mulligan Tawny", "Blame Boehm", and "Sidewalks Of Cuba". Contemporary, 1959. Near Mint- ... $24.99
A unique large group session from Art Pepper – one of his few this way as a leader, despite constant 50s presence as a sideman in big ensembles! Arrangements are by Marty Paich, who more than makes things swing – and there's a nice rhythm section dancing underneath a larger group – with Russ Freeman on piano, Joe Mondragon on bass and Mel Lewis on drums. Players in the fuller lineup include Jack Sheldon on trumpet, Herb Geller on alto, Bill Perkins on tenor, and Bob Enevoldsen on trombone and tenor – and titles are mostly modern numbers written by other jazzmen like Horace Silver, Denzil Best, Jimmy Giuffre, and Sonny Rollins. Titles include "Groovin High", "Move", "Four Brothers", "Anthropology", and "Airegin". LP, Vinyl record album

Contemporary, 1953. Good ... $3.99
One of the earliest sets issued under the name of the Lighthouse All-Stars – that hip assemblage of west coast players headed by bassist Howard Rumsey – hardly a household name on his own, but well-remembered for all the great work done at this famous club! The lineup is a who's who of key players on the west coast at the time – Shorty Rogers and Maynard Ferguson on trumpet, Jimmy Giuffre and Bob Cooper on tenor, Hampton Hawes on piano, Milt Bernhart on trombone, and Shelly Manne on drums – and some tracks are a bit longer than usual, offering up freer solo space than you're likely to get on other west coast dates – a key contribution of the All-Stars recording mode. Titles include "Creme De Menthe", "Four Others", "La Sonicalli", "Morgan Davis", "Bernie's Tune", "Viva Zapata", and "All The Things You Are". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Bob BrookmeyerTraditionalism Revisited ... LP
World Pacific, 1957. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great modern moment from trombone genius Bob Brookmeyer – and hardly the traditional album you might expect from the title – as Bob blows both valve trombone and plays piano, in a really cool combo with Jim Hall on guitar, and the great Jimmy Giuffre on baritone, tenor, and clarinet! The mix of the two horns and guitar is completely sublime – with all the sense of tone and spacing that Bob and Jimmy were bringing to their other late 50s work – and the tracks are longer extrapolations on familiar themes, but taken into fresh territory with the help of Dave Bailey on drums, and either Joe Benjamin or Ralph Pena on bass. ✨✧ Conte Candoli, Shorty Rogers, Bob Cooper, & OthersModern Sounds From California – The Best From The West Vol 2 (10 inch LP) ... LP
Blue Note, 1954. Sealed ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the most obscure 50s releases from Blue Note Records – part of a pair of 10" albums recorded on the west coast – which was quite a change from the label's usual east coast home! The album's originally came with no full artist information, and were released as a "blindfold test" under the supervision of Leonard Feather – in which the listener was supposed to guess the players! The musicians on the original record were not named – probably because of contractual reasons – but artists include the cream of the LA scene of the time – Conte Candoli on trumpet, Jimmy Giuffre and Charlie Mariano on reeds, Howard Roberts on guitar, and Marty Paich on piano – all coming together with a fresh, clean sound that's more like the classic 50s sessions on the Mode or Bethlehem labels instead of Blue Note. Titles on volume 2 includes "Here's Pete", "Blindfold Test No 3", "Arcadia", and "Burbank Bounce". LP, Vinyl record album
(US 70s UA pressing – still sealed!)

✨✧ Russell GarciaWigville (10 inch LP) ... LP
Bethlehem, 1955. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Pure genius from Russ Garcia – one of our favorite arrangers of the 50s, and one of the few who could be modern, swinging, and surprisingly soulful at the same time! The set features Garcia's Wigville Band – a mid 50s ensemble that featured the leading lights of the west coast scene, arranged in a style that had plenty of the tight counterpoint of the time, but which also broke out in these amazingly expressive solos. Charlie Mariano, Bill Holman, and Jimmy Giuffre all get some key moments in on these sides – blowing beautifully in a very small amount of space, but packing some tremendous meaning into their well-crafted solos. Tunes include "Smogville", "The Lonely One", "Rock Road", "Wigville", "Butter Duck", "Then The Lid Blew Off", and "Love Row". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Chico HamiltonChico Hamilton Trio (10 inch LP) ... LP
Pacific Jazz, Early 50s. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Interesting early work from Chico – one that has him working in a trio format, quite different than the chamber modern work of his more famous quintet! The style is not dissimilar, though – as the trio lineup is drums, bass, and guitar – with both of the stringed instruments handling most of the melody, in a free floating style that's got the same "modern yet swinging" approach of some of Jimmy Giuffre's best late 50s recordings. Chico's drums are joined by George Duvivier's bass and Howard Roberts' guitar, and the tracks include "Uganda", "Nuttye", "Buddy Boo", "Street Of Drums", and "Lollypop". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original 10" pressing – a beautiful copy! Cover has a small trace of an old sticker, but no other wear – and no splits.)

Contemporary, 1954. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A 12" LP that brings together 2 different earlier 10" sessions by Manne – groundbreaking work in a freer mode than most of what was going on in LA during the mid 50s! Side one features material from The Three – a 10" session that featured Manne on drums, Shorty Rogers on trumpet, and Jimmy Giuffre on tenor, clarinet, and baritone. The trio work their way – bass and piano-less – through tunes that include "Pas De Trois", "Flip", "Abstract No 1", and "Steeplechase". Side two features material from The Two – an even freer session, with Manne on drums and Russ Freeman on piano – no other accompaniment, and sounding quite revolutionary for the time! Titles include "Billie's Bounce", "The Sound Effects Manne", "Everything Happens To Me", and "Speak Easy". LP, Vinyl record album

Capitol, 1951. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Seminal west coast work from the start of the 50s – a groundbreaking 10" album that showed the best early talents of trumpeter Shorty Rogers! The group here is Rogers at his hippest – before a bigger rise to 50s fame, and right at the start of a great run as a leader and arranger on his own. The Giants combo here features Art Pepper on alto, Jimmy Giuffre on tenor, John Graas on French horn, and Hampton Hawes on piano – all playing with a style that's tight, yet still has plenty of swing, and a lot more room for individual group voices than other later arrangers who tried to cop Shorty's style! All tracks are extremely playful, but without sounding gimmicky – and tunes include "Four Mothers", "Didi", "Sam & The Lady", "Over The Rainbow", "Apropos" and "Popo". LP, Vinyl record album

An unusual Dave Brubeck set from the start of the 60s – surprisingly on Fantasy, given his Columbia fame of the time – and with a slightly different lineup that features the great Bill Smith on clarinet! Smith's got a cool modern sound that's not unlike Jimmy Giuffre – icy but expressive too, and both a great fit for the band because and apart from their usual work with Paul Desmond! Eugene Wright's still on bass, and Joe Morello plays some wonderfully time-kept drums – on titles that include "The Piper", "Frisco Fog", "Lydian Line", "Ballade", "One For The Kids", "Catch Me If You Can", and "Peace Brother". A standout set from Shorty – tightly arranged numbers performed by a quartet that includes Jimmy Giuffre, Pete Jolly, Curtis Counce, and Shelly Manne – all working with Shorty in perfect west coast form! Despite the length of the tunes, the overall feel is similar to Rogers' excellent Wherever The Five Winds Blow album for RCA – and makes the record a great set, done without any gimmicks or tricks – and enough of the modern touch still left from Rogers' first few years on record. Titles include "Martians Go Home", "Trickleydidlier", "Not Really The Blues", and "Michele's Meditation". LP, Vinyl record album

Great early work from Howard Rumsey's Lighthouse group – working here at a level that's almost more freewheeling than on some of their later Contemporary albums! The format's still very much in place here – a host of key All Stars who include Milt Bernhart on trombone, Russ Freeman on piano, Jimmy Giuffre and Bob Cooper on tenors, and Shelly Manne on drums – but there's almost a more "live" sort of energy overall – a bit more boppish and open, with each new player leaping freely into the fray. A seminal bit of 60s modern from MPS – a tremendous session that features equally strong contributions from the three players named in the title – Attila Zoller on guitar, Lee Konitz on alto sax, and Albert Mangelsdorff on trombone! All players are at the height of their modern powers here – never too over-indulgent, but working with lots of sharp angles that seem to take off from the Konitz generation, and revel in the new European freedoms unlocked by Zoller and Mangelsdorff. Players come together in different combinations throughout the record – and some moments have a spareness that reminds us of Jimmy Giuffre trio albums – but others feature bolder rhythms from Barre Phillips on bass and Stu Martin on drums. Titles include "Zores Mores", "At Twilight", "Ach Tavia", "Feeling In & Filling In In Villingen", "Struwwelpeter", and "Alat's Mood". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Booker Little & Booker ErvinSounds Of Inner City ... LP
TCB, 1960. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Reissue of a rare Teddy Charles album that also featured Booker Little and Booker Ervin. The album features the inventive vibist caught live in New York at a Metronome sponsored gig featuring Mingus alums Mal Waldron, Booker Ervin and Booker Little. The set includes one expansive Charles original, "Take Three Parts Jazz", a Little original "The Confined Few", Ervin's "Scoochie" and Waldron's "Cycles", along with a few standards. The music is fantastic, and is a mix of modernist modal themes with rich soul jazz playing. Ervin and Little are fantastic, and their sharp edgey sounds are a perfect contrast with Charles' moody vibes. Very little of Teddy Charles' work, which ranged from introspective avant garde pieces with Jimmy Giuffre to more swing based collaborations with Mingus, has been documented, this piece showcases his New Directions Quartet in a unique setting, with inspired guests. Atlantic, 1957. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A seminal album that defined the fresh sound of a whole new generation in jazz – that "third stream" movement that was different from the cool jazz of the west coast, and the fire of New York! The style here follows that same mix of jazz and higher-concept elements you'd hear on other Modern Jazz Quartet albums for Atlantic – but the music is expanded here with some great help from outside parties too. The Jimmy Giuffre trio join the quartet on most of side one – adding in Jimmy's snakey clarinet and Jim Hall's fluid guitar lines for a really fresh take on the MJQ groove. The remainder of the album brings in the Beaux Arts String Quartet – who shade in the mix of vibes and piano with these dark strains that are really beautiful – and bring even more drama than usual to the music. We'd honestly never thought that highly of Andre's work until hearing this set – and his presence here really adds a new dimension to the Shorty Rogers groove of the 50s – a set of tones that spring out wonderfully, and really illuminate the set! Other players include Bud Shank, Milt Bernhart, Jimmy Giuffre, and Bob Cooper – on 13 titles that include "It's Delovely", "Heat Wave", "40 Below", "Claudia", "General Cluster", "Everything I've Got", "Call For Cole", and "Lullaby Of Birdland". Excellent early modern work from Brookmeyer – emerging here during a brief period when he was really taking changes as a leader, and making a strong name for himself on both valve trombone and piano. Stepping out of the shadow of his years as a sideman, Brookmeyer expresses a clear vision forged in the coolness of work with Gerry Mulligan and Jimmy Giuffre – a more composed approach than either of them, but still with kind of a floating in air quality that recalls the inspired thinking of the birth of the cool generation. Side one is an extended piece called "Blues Suite", and side 2 features one original, "Mellow Drama", plus versions of "Darn That Dream" and "Out Of Nowhere". ✨✧ Modern Jazz Quartet with Sonny RollinsModern Jazz Quartet At Music Inn – Guest Artist Sonny Rollins ... LP
Atlantic, 1957. Very Good- ... Out Of Stock
The Modern Jazz Quartet with a very noteworthy addition – the great Sonny Rollins, whose work on this record really makes it a cut above the usual MJQ outing for Atlantic! As on the quartet's previous Music Inn album with Jimmy Giuffre, the addition of a reed player really inflects their trademark sound with a new range of sounds and feelings – and Rollins himself cuts back on the hardbop influences, and shows some great restraint in matching some of the group's more modern modes. Sonny only plays on 2 of the album's 6 tracks – but that's enough to open it up nicely – and on other numbers, the MJQ begin in their usual mellower mode, but then seem to step things up with more boppish inflections, almost anticipating Rollins' arrival on the last 2 numbers. Sonny plays on the tunes "Bag's Groove" and "Night In Tunisia" – and other titles include "Midsommer", "Festival Sketch", "Yardbird Suite", and an opening medley. LP, Vinyl record album
