Early work from Memphis pianist James Williams – already playing like a master at this point, working with a quartet for this strong outing for Concord! The set's a simple one – a mix of standards and originals played by a quartet that includes Bill Pierce on reeds, Billy Hart on drums, and Dennis Irwin on bass – but Williams has an expansive quality to his work on piano, almost like John Hicks, in that he manages to fill in spaces with tones and colors that illuminate all the corners of the record with a wonderful light. A wonderfully soulful session from the best years of the DIW label – a set that has pianist James Williams recording with tremendous tenor work from Billy Pierce, George Coleman, and Joe Henderson! The album parcels the players out – so that 2 tracks only feature Pierce, and the others feature all 3 players, recorded with placement in different channels of the record – making for a spaciously collaborative sound that's really unique! Williams' piano is great – strong and bold, and without some of the too-traditional echoes that sometimes lose us on other records – and as with a number of the best DIW sessions from the time, there's a bit more grit in the production, which really helps deepen the sound of the music. Greg Abate's working here with a hell of a great rhythm section – one who give the set enough soulful sparkle to take it far from the straight bop promised in the title! Abate's certainly got plenty of bop chops on his reeds – which include tenor, alto, soprano sax, and flute – but there's a more open, fluid groove to most of the tunes – courtesy of a combo that includes James Williams on piano, Rufus Reid on bass, and the great Kenny Washington on drums – all of whom swing things with plenty of round, warm tones. A number of tracks are well-penned originals by Abate, and stand out strongly from the rest – with titles that include "Andromeda", "The Young Uns", "Sax O'Blues", "Gemini Mood", "Minorism", "Bop City", and "Peaks Beaks". An excellent gimmick from the United Artists label – a way of mixing their strong run of 60s soundtrack hits with the world of jazz – thanks to Count Basie and his group taking on a whole host of themes from the successful James Bond films! Count Basie brings a soulful swing to the work of John Barry, who scored most of these cuts – hitting hard on the tracks with his own smoking piano, and an orchestra filled with some of his best players – including Al Grey on trombone, Eric Dixon on saxes, and Freddie Greene on guitar – plus guest tenor work from Eddie Lockjaw Davis, an artist who wasn't credited on the session at he time. Arrangements are by Chico O'Farrill and George Williams – and titles include "Thunderball", "From Russia With Love", "007", "Girl Trouble", and "Goldfinger". LP, Vinyl record album

Well, "album of the year" might be a hard claim to live up to – but this is a heck of a great record! The album's one of Blakey's real sleepers – cut years away from his time at Blue Note, with a fluid soulful approach that steps off his work at Prestige quite nicely. The real strength of the set is the group – as even at this point, Blakey's got an insanely perfect ear for picking young talent. Every player's a star, and the group features work by Bobby Watson, James Williams, Bill Pierce, Charles Fambrough, and even a young Wynton Marsalis, who still sounds pretty nice at this point. The set list include some great tracks, too, originals by group members that include "Soulful Mister Timmons", "Little Man", "In Case You Missed It", and "Ms BC". CD

You gotta love the confidence in Blakey's title for this one – because even in the late 70s, over 20 years since starting the Jazz Messengers, he was still very much in his prime! The album has him working with a wonderful group that includes Bobby Watson, Curtis Fuller, David Schnitter, and James Williams – plus percussionist Ray Mantilla, added in on a few tracks to give the set a slightly fuller sound. Tracks are long, dynamic, and gorgeous – really stepping out with the warmth and imagination that Blakey never let die during his career – but which seemed to be burning as brightly during this stretch as it was during the few really noteworthy points of earlier years. A beautiful big band set from the great Art Blakey – but one that's got all the sharp focus of his small group sides by the Jazz Messengers! The lineup here is a great one – that very vibrant early 80s version of Blakey's group with Bobby Watson on alto sax, Bill Pierce on tenor, and James Williams on piano – augmented by Kevin Eubanks on guitar, Valerie Ponomarev on trumpet, and the Marsalis brothers rounding out the set with some extra horn work! The sound is strong and proud, and handled by Blakey with a tightness that's similar to his smaller group work of the time – but with a power that's simply incredible – especially when Watson's presence is made known on his tunes "Wheel Within A Wheel", "Linwood", and "Bit A Bittadose". Two different slices of Art Blakey – served up here in a 3CD set! Moanin isn't the Blue Note album of the same name, but a fantastic live set from 1968 – recorded after Blakey's classic Blue Note years, but with a group of fantastic players that includes a young Billy Harper on tenor, Ronnie Matthews on piano, and Julian Priester on trombone. Harper alone is worth the price of the CD – as his firey solos are great, and the whole album's an excellent peek at his early career! There's a sense of open freedom here that's quite different than the earlier Jazz Messengers groove – and this European date is a great complement to the better-known US live recording with the same group from the time. The set features a number of nice long tracks – like Slide Hampton's "Slide's Delight", Billy Harper's "Blues For Eros", Bobby Timmons' "Moanin", and the Jazz Messengers' standard "You Don't Know What Love Is". Sesjun Radio Shows 1 is fantastic radio performances from one of our favorite stretches of the legendary Jazz Messengers group – a time when the lineup featured a young Bobby Watson on alto and Valery Ponomarev on trumpet – two players who'd grow into fantastic leaders on their own, but who here help bring a lot of new life to the group! Watson is especially wonderful – contributing a few key compositions, and that soaring spirit in his horn, which really helped usher in a whole new generation for Blakey's group. James Williams is on piano too, and we actually love his work in this group more than on his later sets as a leader – and remaining players include David Schnitter on tenor on the first six tracks, and Billy Pierce on the horn on the remaining two – and either Dennis Irwin or Charles Fambrough on bass. Art's still the rock-solid core of the group – a tremendous leader who always gets fantastic performances out of young players – and titles include "ETA", "Dr J", "Free For All", "Along Came Betty", "ETA", and "Evaline". The last four tracks feature a slightly later group – still with Fambrough on bass, but including wonderful tenor and soprano sax work from Jean Toussaint, plus trumpet from Terence Blanchard, alto from Donald Harrison, and piano from Johnny O'Neal – an equally great lineup, but in a completely different way. The legendary Kenny Burrell played often at the Village Vanguard over the years – and this sweet set from later years has the guitarist really stretching out in the familiar setting – hitting some surprisingly deep, strong lines throughout – all with effortless ease! The record's a great reminder that Burrell kept on growing over the decades, and never seemed to lose his power as both a leader and a soloist – something we've been reminded of in his many records after this early 90s set – and the younger combo here really seems to bring out a fresh fire in Kenny, with work from James Williams on piano, Peter Washington on bass, and Sherman Ferguson on drums. The title's a bit of a silly joke, but the album's a really great one – a five-pianist effort that features Donald Brown, Harold Mabern, Mulgrew Miller, James Williams, and Geoff Keezer on the keys – all stepping off from some great rhythm from Christian McBride on bass and Tony Reedus on drums! The pianos are often used together wonderfully – so that one handles rhythm and another the melody – and the interplay is really great, and never too gimmicky – a sound that's almost just a deepening of the already-great DIW trio mode of the time, given new shades and inflections by the style of the recording!
