Lambert, Hendricks & RossSwingers! ... LP
World Pacific, 1958. Near Mint- ... $11.99 19.99
One of the rarest albums ever recorded by the hiply swinging vocal trio of Jon Hendricks, Dave Lambert, and Annie Ross – a live session from 1958, with backing by a group that includes Zoot Sims, Russ Freeman, and Jim Hall. The feel here is really wonderful – a lot less hokey than on some of the group's Basie-oriented sides, with a style that's perhaps closest to their superb work on the album High Flying for Columbia. Tracks are angular, dynamic, and very swinging – with great lyrics by Hendricks, and titles that include "Four", "Airegin", "Little Niles", "Babe's Blues", "Now's The Time", and "Jackie". (Vocalists, Jazz) LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Vincent Herring/Bobby Watson/Gary BartzBird At 100 ... CD
Smoke Sessions, 2019. Used ... Out Of Stock
A tribute to the music of Charlie Parker – but a set that sparkles more from the individual inspiration of the three alto giants in the lead – a great lineup that features Gary Bartz, Bobby Watson, and Vincent Herring! The tracks are long, with great lead passages that have all three horns soaring together, then individual solos from each player – and although the songs include a number of classics from the Charlie Parker songbook, the album also features original tunes by Herring and Watson, and another by Jackie McLean – maybe marking the whole thing as being very much in the spirit of its title – a look back at a century that's felt the influence of Bird, with all the alto sax changes that have taken place in the time since his passing. The rhythm trio is excellent too – David Kikoski on piano, Yasushi Nakamura on bass, and Carl Allen on drums – and titles include "Bird-Ish", "Klactoveedsedstene", "The Hymn", "Folklore", "Bird Lives", and "Yardbird Suite". Jazz Doctors (Billy Bang/Frank Lowe)Intensive Care ... LP
Cadillac (UK), 1984. New Copy (reissue)... $26.99 32.99
Forget the hokey pun in the title, as the album's a sharp-edged set that has way more going on than that bad wit might imply – a brilliant record that has the same sort of post-loft vibe as some of the best Black Saint/Soul Note sessions from the time! The group here features players who worked on many of those records too – the mighty Billy Bang on violin, sounding incredible, and so different than generations of others touching that instrument in jazz – sharp, soulful, and almost "blown" more like a saxophone! Frank Lowe's tenor follows with a similarly bold voice – and the group features very urgent work on bass from Rafael Garrett and drums from Dennis Charles. Titles include great readings of Jackie McLean's "Little Melonae" and Ornette Coleman's "Lonely Woman" – plus the tracks "Loweology", "Ballad With One L", and "Blood On The Cross". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cool pressing – in a flipback cover!)

Kosuke MineOut Of Chaos ... CD
East Wind/Universal (Japan), 1974. New Copy ... $10.99 14.99 About May 29, 2024
Great work from this lesser-known Japanese tenor player – an underrated genius with a style that's at once free-searching and introspective! Even though he plays tenor, Kosuke Mine's tone reminds us a lot of Jackie McLean on some of his best Blue Note sides – kind of leaning into itself as a way of pushing the sound forward – but also really reaching out with some post-Coltrane freedoms, especially on the tracks that have a sharply modal groove! The album only features 3 long tracks – held together tightly by rhythms from Masabumi Kikuchi on piano, Tsutomu Okada on bass, and Motohiko Hino on drums – and titles include "Recollection", "Little Abi", and "Cross Wind". Pucho & His Latin Soul BrothersHeat! ... LP
Prestige, 1968. Very Good+ ... $79.99
Brilliant work from Pucho and his legendary Soul Brothers group of the 60s – a record that's beyond definition – as it combines Latin, soul, jazz, and even a few funky touches – all into one totally amazing sound! This one really gets all the elements right – and the fantastic Pazant Brothers (Eddie & Al) are on sax and trumpet (respectively), and a young Neal Creque is on piano, really bringing a sharp edge to Pucho's groove that other Latin combos of the time never had – and the set also features some vocals by Jackie Soul on a few cuts, who's a great singer that really helps cross a few cuts over into Latin Soul territory. Titles include the soul jazz cuts "Heat" and "Psychedelic Pucho", plus other great Latin soul cuts, like "Payin' Dues" and "Candied Yam". (Latin, Jazz) LP, Vinyl record album
(Blue circle logo label stereo pressing with DBH etch. Cover has a large check mark in pen in front, some corner wear, and is bent a bit at the top left corner.)
