✨✧ David Murray3D Family ... CD
Hatology (Switzerland), 1978. Used ... Out Of Stock
A key recording from the early years of David Murray – a sharp-edged trio recording that instantly placed him in a strong lineage of tenor improvisers that includes Sonny Rollins and Albert Ayler! The record's a live date – recorded at the Wilisau Jazz Festival in 1978 with a trio that features Johnny Dyani on bass and Andrew Cyrille on drums – both well-chosen players to assist Murray on his long, exploratory tracks for the record – tunes that somewhat break open his loft jazz styles of the period, and push things slightly more into a European improvisatory mode. Titles include "3D Family", "Patricia", "In Memory Of Yomo Kenyatta", and "Shout Song". CD

✨✧ David MurrayDavid Murray Black Saint Quartet – Live In Berlin ... CD
Jazzwerkstatt (Germany), 2007. Used ... Out Of Stock
Beautiful work from David Murray – a set that's perhaps a bit less polished than some of his other recent albums, but one that more than makes up for that with a richly soulful sound! The group has a loose, freewheeling feel at points – and Murray seems to ride their spirit strongly with some great tones on his tenor – those instantly-compelling sounds that first made his work grab us so many decades back, but which don't always show up in recent years. Murray plays bass clarinet too, but it's his tenor work that we really love here – and the quartet features Lafayette Gilchrist on piano, Jaribu Shahid on bass, and Hamid Drake on drums. Most tracks are quite long, and filled with beautifully-spun solos – creative, rhythmic, and filled with life! Titles include "Dirty Laundry", "Banished", "Sacred Ground", "Murray's Steps", and "Waltz Again". CD

✨✧ David Murray/Geri Allen/Terri Lyne CarringtonPerfection ... CD
Motema/Membran (Germany), 2016. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Wow, the title definitely gets it right here – as the set's verging on perfection, and is maybe one of the best records we've heard from David Murray in years! The reedman is fantastic throughout – and the album really hits the sort of deeper soul of some of his DIW or Black Saint sessions from the mid and late 80s – a more straight head style of jazz tenor that instantly links Murray to a John Coltrane tradition, while still giving a nod to his more adventurous roots! The group's a trio – with beautiful work from Geri Allen on piano, whose sound is key to the success of the record – plus drums from Terri Lyne Carrington – on titles that include "Perfection", "Samsara", "Cycles & Seasons", "Barbara Allen", "Mirror Of Youth", and "Geri-Rigged". Caili O'DohertyQuarantine Dream ... CD
Posi-Tone, 2022. New Copy ... $7.99 15.99
Pianist Caili O'Doherty has a great sort of shimmer to her tone – a sense of swing that's familiar, but nicely personal as well – a bit hard to describe in words, but a charm that grabs you instantly from the very first note! Her look on the cover, and the somewhat dated title reference might get in the way of the contents of the record – which are rock-solid, and a great statement from this young artist who's really found a way to leave her mark on the piano trio format – proof that with the right player, the trio still has a long way to go! Tamir Shmerling plays bass, Cory Cox handles drums, and Nicole Glover blows a bit of tenor and soprano sax on a few tracks – titles that include a great remake of the well-chosen Duke Pearson number "You Know I Care", plus the originals "Salt & Vinegar", "Runaway", "Mr O", "Al", "Quarantine Dream", and "Reach Within". ✨✧ Horace ParlanJoe Meets The Rhythm Section/Ellington Ballads/Pannonica (3CD set) ... CD
Timeless/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1981/1986/1988. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Three later albums from pianist Horace Parlan – all cut overseas, many years after his early work for Blue Note! On Joe Meets The Rhythm Section, the "Joe" is Dutch tenorist Joe Van Enkhuizen, who's a great fit with a trio that features Horace Parlan on piano, Rufus Reid on bass, and Al Harewood on drums! The album's got that subtle approach that marks Parlan's later years – a less all-out style than his start on Blue Note, but one that's maybe even more rewarding if you're willing to let yourself slide into it – something that's easy to do when you've got Joe pointing the way with his well-blown, raspy-edged tenor! Reid is mighty nice too – with those instantly-deep notes that always grab us strongly when he's recorded this well – the sort of presence that most other bassists would need to be electric to reach. Titles include "Alfie's Theme", "Bluesville", "FSR", "Wadin", and "Willow Weep For Me". Ellington Ballads is a nice little record that's very much along the lines of the duet sessions that pianist Horace Parlan cut with Archie Shepp – done with a similar open, soulful style that really brings a lot of personal energy to these tunes penned by Duke Ellington! This might be the first time we've ever heard tenorist Joe Van Enkhuizen, but he's a surprisingly great player – and one who carves out these raspy lines on his instrument that fit really well with the well-crafted lines from Parlan's piano – a lot more subtle and spacious than during his Blue Note years, but maybe even more powerful because of that. Titles include "Serenade To Sweden", "I Got It Bad", "Prelude To A Kiss", "Melancholy", "Sophisticated Lady", and "Creole Blues/Tonight I Shall Sleep". Pannonica is a tight little live set from pianist Horace Parlan – recorded with a wonderful trio that features Reggie Johnson on bass and Alvin Queen on drums – both players who seem to effortlessly match Parlan's shifts at every stage of the proceedings! The tracks are relatively long, and showcase all those changes that Horace had made on the European scene since his earlier years on Blue Note – that move towards warmer, more lyrical elements in his music – but still shaped with his ear for soulful modernism too. The titles are all familiar, but served up at the level that can make the right sort of live piano date sound so great – on selections that include "Hi Fly", "Who Cares", "No Greater Love", and "Pannonica". ✨✧ John PattonLet 'Em Roll ... CD
Blue Note, 1965. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A wonderfully wicked meeting of the minds – and a legendary bit of soul jazz from organist Big John Patton! The core of the record features the usual Patton groove – with John on Hammond, Grant Green on guitar, and Otis Finch on drums – but added to that mix is Bobby Hutcherson on vibes, making a rare appearance on an organ jazz session, with some wonderful results! The combination of vibes and organ is especially haunting – jangling a groove with a really modal feel, and creating a sound that instantly made this one stand out from the pack! The whole thing's great, and tracks include "The Turnaround", "Let Em Roll", "Latona", and "One Step Ahead". CD

✨✧ Pedway (Caroline Davis/Matthew Golombisky/Quinn Kirchner)Vitalic ... LP
Ears & Eyes, 2022. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Moody improvisations from this unique Chicago trio – pulled together from a series of performances recorded in a few different venues, and distilled down to a nicely focused album! The sound here is a blend of the alto sax of Caroline Davis, the basses of Matthew Golombisky, and the drums of Quinn Kirchner – players who seem to find their groove instantly on each individual track, then keep exploring that space in ways that have them pushing the boundaries as the cycles move on – with some especially soaring lines from Davis, at a level that often feels as if she's handling a very different instrument than an alto! Golombisky plays electric bass, which also gives the record a different vibe than if he were acoustic – and titles include "If We Open People Up We'd Find Landscapes", "Home Of Levi Coffin", "Channels", "Vapor", "Film As Dream Film As Music", and "Personal Flotation Device". ✨✧ Bud PowellBud Powell '57 ... LP
Norgran, 1954/1955. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The title says "57", but the music's from a few years before – yet that's OK with us, because Bud Powell always has a sound that's instantly timeless no matter what the year! The album brings together sides from Verve dates in 1954 and 1955 – one featuring Art Blakey on drums and Lloyd Troutman on bass, the other featuring Max Roach and Percy Heath. Given the presence of the strong drummers, there's a drive here that's a bit harder than on some of the other Verve dates – a highly rhythmic component that often brings a real focus to some of the more upbeat numbers, but which lays back nicely on the mellower ones to let Powell hit some especially dark notes. Titles include "Deep Night", "That Old Black Magic", "Round Midnight", "Thou Swell", and "Tenderly". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Sun RaMystery Of Being – Voice Studio Rome – January 1978 (3LP set) ... LP
Klimt, 1978. New Copy 3LP (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Sun Ra quartet material from the late 70s – his great Italian studio recordings from Voice Studio in Rome –rare material originally released on the New Steps and Other Voices, Other Blues LPs on the Horo label that's been hard sought over the years! The group features John Gilmore on percussion and tenor, Michael Ray on trumpet, Luqman Ali on drums, and Ra on keyboards. It's got a number of tracks that are relatively straight – at least for Ra – and which are played with a wonderful edge that makes them instantly compelling, sounding almost like obscure indie soul jazz sides from the east coast underground of the mid 70s. The feel on most numbers is very different than Ra's usual work, and the record sparkles with a genius that makes us wish it was easier to find the Horo work! Includes the sublime vocal tune "When There Is No Sun", plus the original tracks "The Horo", "Moon People", "Rome At Twilight", and "Friend & Friendship" – plus a very nice cover of "My Favorite Things", Along The Tiber", "Rebellion", "The Mystery Of Being", "One Day In Rome", and "Springtime & Summer Idyll". ✨✧ Tom SkinnerVoices Of Bishara ... LP
International Anthem/Nonesuch, 2022. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The first album as a leader from drummer Tom Skinner, but a set that instantly marks him as a player to watch – as the set's got a great vibe all the way through, and a combination of elements that's even greater than the sum of its parts! And the parts are pretty mighty, too – as the quintet features Nubya Garcia on tenor and flute, and Shabaka Hutchings on tenor and bass clarinet – both players who need no introduction, but who are in this raw, spiritual jazz setting that really lets their power come through. Yet maybe even more amazing is the work on cello by Kareem Dayes, which is great next to the bass of Tom Herbert – both elements resonating together to give a subtle sort of majesty to the record! The set is played whole and live – not chopped/mixed/produced as much as other International Anthem albums, or some of the work from the London scene – yet it also doesn't just ape an older spiritual jazz mode either – a real testament to Skinners' vision as a leader. Titles include "Red 2", "Bishara", "Voices Of The Past", "Quiet As It's Kept", "Day After Tomorrow", and "The Journey". LP, Vinyl record album

Carol SloaneOut Of The Blue ... LP
Columbia, 1961. Very Good- ... $9.99
A beautiful little record from singer Carol Sloane – a singer who's billed as a discovery from the Newport Jazz Festival – but who sings here with shimmeringly modern arrangements that recall some of June Christy's best 50s work with arranger Pete Rugolo! The force behind the backings here is mostly Bill Finegan – of Sauter-Finegan fame – who uses just the right amount of subtle modern colors and tones to instantly announce Sloane as a singer from a new generation – one who's not trying to cross over to pop, nor please the dancers – and instead revel in all the advances that jazz vocals had made in the postwar years. Bob Brookmeyer also arranged a few tunes – and plays often on the record, with a great tone that underscores the blue vibe of the set – and titles include "Who Cares", "My Ship", "Little Girl Blue", "Life Is Just A Bowl Of Cherries", "Night & Day", "My Silent Love", and "The More I See You". ✨✧ Chad Taylor/Brian Settles/Neil PodgurskiReel ... CD
Astral Spirits, 2022. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Drummer Chad Taylor is one of our secret heroes in jazz – a player we've loved for years, and who always brings something special to a session when he's a sideman – yet an artist who hardly ever gets to record as a leader in a setting like this! And if you think Chad's great on other people's albums, he's really fantastic here – leading a trio with Neil Podgurski on piano and Brian Settles on saxes – all at a level that's very different than other lineups of this nature! Given Taylor's tremendous talents on the kit, the record is much more drum-forward than others like this – not letting the reeds or piano dominate too much – yet also at a level that's not a bombastic drum session, as Taylor's always a master of subtle, sensitive sounds on the familiar instrument. The quality is hard to describe in words, but comes through instantly on the record – a gem of a set, with titles that include "Delta", "Subterfuge", "Moon Tone Shift", "Julia's Groove", "Concentric", and "The Reel". Clark TerryClark Terry ... CD
Verve, Mid 50s. Used ... $12.99
A stunner – and one of Clark Terry's finest moments ever! The record has a rawness and groove that you'd hardly expect from his later albums – no surprise, though, considering that it was cut during that really hip time at Emarcy, when the label was working in a mode that was darker and more challenging than many of the smaller labels at the time. Credit is also due to arranger Quincy Jones – who pulls together a group that includes Horace Silver, Jimmy Cleveland, Cecil Payne, and Art Blakey, all into a fiercely grooving sound that recalls some of his most adventurous work of the 50s. The album kicks off with the stunning "Swahili", a tune that will instantly make you happy you bought the record – and other tracks include "Coop", "Chuckles", "Tuma", "Kitten", and "The Countess". EmArcy/Lonehill (Spain), 1954/1955. Used ... Out Of Stock
2 rare sides of work by trumpeter Clark Terry – both with a fair bit more edge than many of his later recordings! The first half of the CD is from the amazing 1955 album Clark Terry for Emarcy – a real stunner, and one of Terry's finest moments ever! The record has a rawness and groove that you'd hardly expect from his later albums – no surprise, though, considering that it was cut during that really hip time at Emarcy, when the label was working in a mode that was darker and more challenging than many of the smaller labels at the time. The album kicks off with the stunning "Swahili", a tune that will instantly make you happy you bought the record – and other tracks include "Coop", "Chuckles", "Tuma", "Kitten", and "The Countess". These tracks are followed by 8 more from an obscure 1954 session done under the leadership of clarinetist Jimmy Hamilton – and featuring Terry on trumpet, Barry Galbraith and Sidney Gross on guitars, Oscar Pettiford on bass, and Osie Johnson on drums – all in a really unusual group formation that's totally great! One guitar's used for solos and the other for rhythm – and the lack of piano gives the record a decidedly different swing than you might expect from a Jimmy Hamilton session – one that's less traditional, and more airy and open – really inventive in the rhythmic construction of the tunes, in a mode that's followed up very nicely by the soloists in their own energy. Titles include "Chuckles", "Bohemia After Dark", "Blues In My Room", "Blues For Clarinet", and "What Am I Here For". CD

Resteamed (UK), 2011. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
Don't let the title put you off, as these aren't tracks recorded at some soundcheck before a gig by British piano legend Stan Tracey – and instead, they're some incredible recordings from late in his career, showing the modernist to be every bit as vibrant as back in the day! CD1 features duets between Stan and son Clark Tracey on drums – a pair who'd been working together for many years by the time of this date, and who have fantastic energy that will instantly blow away any idea of nepotism you might have in mind! Clark is as dynamic on the drums as Stan is on the keys – and the pair work some amazing magic on original tunes that include "Stick Chops", "Foregone Conclusion", "M25", "Curry Favour", "Soundcheck", "Gambons", and "Midnight Around". CD2 features a trio performance, as bassist Andrew Clyndert joins Stan and Clark – as the group move through a mix of wonderfully reworked jazz classics, and a strong tune of Stan's own – titles that include "Lil Ol Pottsville", "Let's Cool One", "Angelica", "Goodbye", "Blue Monk", and "Chelsea Bridge". A masterpiece from the second chapter of FMP – that moment when the label and the European free jazz scene seemed to ruminate with some more intimate, sometimes contemplative modes – which only seemed to further allow the players to express themselves in an even greater range of talents! That's definitely the case here, on the two side-long tracks on the record – work that's free, but also feels more organically grown out of the fertile mental soil of the quartet, rather than sprung up instantly – served up with great care by a lineup that features Schlippenbach on piano, Evan Parker on reeds, Alan Silva on bass, and Paul Lovens on drums. Each track is a side long, and live – and titles include "Ore" and "Anticlockwise". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Joe ZawinulMoney In The Pocket ... LP
Atlantic, 1966. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Arguably the best solo record that Joe Zawinul ever cut – and one of the few to really show him working in the soulful style that he had with Cannonball Adderley's famous 60s combo! The record features Joe on piano – stepping out on cuts that still have all the soul jazz currents that he brought to his work with Cannon – those rolling lines and heavy left-hand grooves that made a Zawinul groove instantly infectious! The lineups shift a bit here, but include heavyweight players throughout – including Blue Mitchell on trumpet, Clifford Jordan or Joe Henderson on tenor, Pepper Adams on baritone, Sam Jones on bass, and Louis Hayes on drums! The presence of those giants puts the whole thing in Blue Note or Prestige Records 60s territory – and titles include "Money In The Pocket", "If", "Midnight Mood", "Some More Of Dat", "Sharon's Waltz", and "Del Sasser".
