✨✧ Aleuda featuring Hermeto PascoalOferenda ... CD
Carmo/Far Out (UK), Mid 80s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A wonderful album – one that takes us back to the early 70s sound of Hermeto, Airto, and Flora Purim! Hermeto Pascoal arrranged and produced the record, and it's based around the jazzy vocals of Brazilian singer Aleuda, who reminds us a bit of Flora in her early days, but with a tone that's a bit higher and sharper. The backing is performed by a crack group of Brazilian jazz and fusion players that includes Mauro Senise, Zeca Assumpcao, Robertinho Silva, and Hermeto himself – and the album feels like a rare lost session that might have been cut for Milestone during the heyday of the West Coast Latin scene of the mid 70s. Titles include "Ceara", "Oferenda", "Galope", "Jurema", "Passarinho", "Rede", and "Fofoca". (Brazil, Jazz) CD

✨✧ Sean Khan with Hermeto PascoalPalmares Fantasy ... CD
Far Out (UK), 2018. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The deepest record we've heard so far from London's Sean Khan – and that's saying a lot, as we really loved his previous albums! Sean got his start on the broken beat scene a number of years back, and has slowly been evolving into more of a jazz-based artist – which he hits fantastically here in the company of the legendary Hermeto Pascoal, who plays Fender Rhodes and melodica on the record too! But honestly, even without Hermeto, Sean's pretty fantastic on his own – as his alto sax lines have this beautifully sharp edge, as does his work on flute and soprano – these soulful currents that almost rival recent work by Nat Birchall and some of his contemporaries. Other players include Ivan Conti on drums and Jim Mullin on electric guitar – and Heidi Vogel sings on two tracks, and Sabrina Mahleiros on one more. Titles include "Moment Of Collapse", "Waltz For Hermeto", "Palmares Fantasy", "Montreux", "Tudo Que Voce Podia Ser", "The Blonde", and "The Conversation". (New Grooves, Jazz) CD

Hermeto PascoalHermeto ... CD
Cobblestone/Far Out (UK), Early 70s. New Copy ... $13.99 16.99
The amazing first album from Brazilian modern musical genius Hermeto Pascoal – a set that would change the world of jazz and Brazilian music for years to come! By the time of the set, Hermeto was no stranger to the scene – he'd recorded famously in Quarteto Novo with Airto, and in some other key groups – yet this set also marks a real transformation, the rise of Pascoal as a new visionary, with endless fresh ideas for sounds, rhythms, and instrumental possibilities! And yet, the album's still very groovy – it follows nicely off the spirit of Quarteto Novo, and mixes tight rhythmic changes with all sorts of incredible instrumental inflections – work by Pascoal on keyboards and flute – augmented with drums and percussion from Airto, and a range of reeds from American jazz musicians Jerome Richardson, Maurico Smith, Joe Farrell, Jerry Dodgion, and Hubert Laws – as well as trombone from the great Garnett Brown, and trumpets from Thad Jones and Joe Newman. The mix of American players and Brazilian inspiration is wonderful – and Airto and Flora Purim produced the set – and the latter sings a bit on the record. Titles include "As Marianas", "Alicate", "Hermeto", "Coalhada", "Fabiola", "Guizos", and "Flor Do Amor". (Brazil, Jazz) CD

✨✧ Hermeto PascoalMusica Livre De Hermeto Pascoal ... CD
Philips/Universal (Japan), 1973. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Quite possibly the clearest moment of genius ever from the legendary Hermeto Pascoal – a tremendous album that helped reshape instrumental Brazilian music for many years to come! At one level, the record shares a sound with some of the fuller, richer orchestrations going on in the post-bossa years – especially the work of Edu Lobo and Marcos Valle – but at another, it's filled with the kind of inventive instrumental interplay that's always made Hermeto so great, but which has never come off so perfectly as it does here! As you might expect from Pascoal, there's some especially great reed passages – crafted in a flurry of colors and tones – but there's also a warmer, more flowing quality to the whole album – less of the dark notes and pointy edges that show up often in Hermeto's work from later years. Bits of strings help the whole thing glide tremendously – and the record's a genre-busting blend of jazz, Brazilian roots, and complicated arrangements – unlike anything else we've ever heard, and still one of our favorite albums of all time! Titles include "Bebe", "Asa Branca", "Carinhoso", "Plin", "Gaio Da Roseira", and "Sereiarei". (Brazil, Jazz) CD

✨✧ Hermeto PascoalPlanetario Da Gavea ... CD
Far Out (UK), 1981. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
A never-issued performance from this legendary Brazilian musician – a live concert that's a perfect addition to his tremendous records from the same stretch in time! As with some of his best material of the 70s, Hermeto's working here in a style that begins in jazz, but quickly moves into something else – a very special space and sound of his own, driven by an offbeat approach to rhythm, and really unusual instrumental phrasing that often takes familiar elements and has them coming out in very fresh ways! The style isn't avant garde, as there's a sense of swing and rhythm to most numbers here – but Pascoal's definitely pushing the boundaries and developing a rich vision of his own - with help from a great group of younger players that include Jovino Santos Neto on keyboards, Carlos Malta on soprano and flute, and Ze Eduardo Nazario on drums and percussion. Hermeto blows the cool baritone horn pictured on the cover, plus tenor and flute as well – on titles that include "Samba Do Belaqua", "Bombardino", "Vou Pra La E Pra Ca", "Ferrangens", "Jegue", "Duo De Bateras", "Sao Jorge/Ilza Na Veijoada", and "Era Pra Ser Nao Foi". (Brazil, Jazz) CD

✨✧ Hermeto Pascoal & Grupo Vice VersaViajando Com O Som – The Lost 76 Vice Versa Studio Sessions (green vinyl pressing) ... LP
Far Out (UK), 1976. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A never-issued album by the great Hermeto Pascoal – recorded in the space between his 70s classics Slaves Mass and A Musica Livre – and every bit as amazing as those classics! The music here is fluid, open, and a fantastic mix of jazz and all of Hermeto's new ideas about musical structure – performed at a level that's highly organic, and with that completely individual vision that Pasocal brought to his sound from the start! This isn't typical Brazilian fusion of the time, but nor is it anything like the tighter sounds that Airto and Flora Purim were recording up in the US – instead, a musical mode that's completely in its own space, and which needs only one listen to convince you of the master's genius. The group here is overflowing with young talent – Lelo Nazario on keyboards, Nivaldo Ornelas and Mauro Senise on saxes and flute, Toninho Horta on guitar, Zeca Assumpcao on bass, and Ze Eduardo Nazario on drums – all important musical visionaries on their own, working together here to hit an even new level of creativity. Aleuda Chaves sings wordlessly on a bit of the record – and the whole thing has that blend of soaring sound and lyricism that marks Pascoal at his best. Titles include "Danca Do Paje", "Natal", "Casinha Pequinina", and "Mavumvavumpefoco". (Brazil, Jazz) LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ AirtoSeeds On The Ground – The Natural Sounds Of Airto ... LP
Buddah, 1971. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $44.99
Easily one of the greatest records that Brazilian percussionist Airto ever recorded – a stunning blend roots and jazzy currents, and a set that follows strongly off his work in the group Quarteto Novo! The set's got contributions from one of his key partners in that combo – reedman Hermeto Pascoal – and like Pascoal's material at this point, the whole thing is maybe one of the most perfect realizations of the musical vision that Airto was going for! There's none of the tighter, more polished sounds of his later fusion years – and this is the record that will show you just why his arrival on the American scene made such big waves at the time. Flora Purim also sings on the record – and titles include "Andei", "On Sonho", Papo Furado", and "O Galho da Rosiera". (Brazil, Jazz) LP, Vinyl record album

Donald ByrdElectric Byrd ... CD
Blue Note, 1970. Used ... $18.99
Donald Byrd in a sweet electric mode – as you'd guess from the title! The set was recorded right before Byrd's legendary run with Larry Mizell in the early 70s – and the electric approach is a bit different here – a style that blends Byrd's wonderful trumpet lines with the larger ensemble mode Blue Note sometimes used in the late 60s, but with a spacey, stretched-out feel that's mighty nice! The album's somewhat similar to Byrd's Kofi set – but possibly a bit more open overall – and players here include Duke Pearson on electric piano, Jerry Dodgion on alto and sopranos ax, Frank Foster on tenor, Pepper Adams on baritone, Hermeto Pascoal on flute, Wally Richardson on guitar, Ron Carter on bass, Mickey Roker on drums, and Airto on percussion. Pearson produced, and probably arranged too – given a slight Brazilian undercurrent to the grooves – and titles include "Estavanico", "Essence", "The Dude", and "Xibaba". CD

A beautiful live representation of the energy of the Bitches Brew years – one that has Miles Davis and the group really letting loose with free-flowing, modally-inspired lines – cooking up an incredible blend of acoustic and electric sounds at once! There's a bit of funk here, but not much – and although guitar is sometimes used strongly, it's often not as noisy as in later live sides. Instead, the whole group gels together beautifully – an unlikely assortment of players that includes Gary Bartz and Steve Grossman on reeds, John McLaughlin on guitar, Herbie Hancock on keyboards, Hermeto Pascoal on percussion, Dave Holland on bass, and Jack DeJohnette on drums – all given new focus, direction, and inspiration by Miles! Titles include "What I Say", "Sivad", "Selim", "Funky Tonk", and a great medley of "Gemini/Double Image". CD

✨✧ Grupo UmStarting Point ... CD
Far Out (UK), 1975. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Really wonderful early work from Grupo Um – an important Brazilian combo with ties to the more experimental side of scene, including previous experience with the legendary Hermeto Pascoal! The group's debut album was issued in 1979, titled Marcha Sobre A Cidade – but this earlier recording was done a few years before, and now finally gets exposure as the real starting point for Grupo Um! The trio features brothers Lelo Nazario on a piano, prepared piano, and Fender Rhodes – and Ze Eduardo Nazario on drums, percussion, and berimbau – both joined by the legendary bassist Zeca Assumpcao, who played on countless great records in the 70s. The music is jazz at points, but more experimental at others – and is often even farther off than some of the more adventurous work by Pascoal during the decade – as the trio aren't afraid to break down their styles, even from the previous tracks on the record – effortlessly moving between melodic moments and more avant-styled sounds. Yet there's also a warmth here that's maybe missing from the later Grupo Um records – an innocence and freshness that really comes through on titles that include "Jardim Candida", "Organica", "Onze Por Oto", "Porao Da Teodoro", and "Cortejo Dos Reis Negros". Blue Note, 1970. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Pivotal work from Duke Pearson – a brilliant set that perfectly sums up all the criss-crossing of styles he was working on in the late 60s – and comes up with a wonderful blend of electric jazz, Brazilian rhythms, and just a touch of 70s soul! Pearson plays some sweet Fender Rhodes on the set, in addition to acoustic piano – and there's some other wonderful instrumentation in the mix too – including flute and guitar from Hermeto Pascoal, making a rare Blue Note appearance – plus sweet flutes from Jerry Dodgion and Lew Tabackin, both blowing in kind of a CTI-ish way – as well as tenor from Frank Foster, trumpets from Collins/Shepley, and wonderful drums from Mickey Roker – whose inventive rhythms here really helps set fire to Duke's new ideas. Flora Purim sings on a few tracks – pre-Fantasy Records, and turning in some of her greatest vocals ever – and titles include a wonderful version of "Stormy", plus "Book's Bossa", "Gira, Girou", "Hermeto", "Emily", and "It Could Only Happen With You". A brilliant pairing of talents – Brazilian trumpeter Marcio Montarroyos and the soulful Stone Alliance group of the 70s – coming together here in Rio with extra help from Hermeto Pascoal on reeds, and added work from Brazilian musicians David Slon, Dom Bira, and Erasto De Holanda Vasconcelos! The style is tighter and harder than the usual Brazilian jazz of the time – a bit fusiony at points, but always with a richer vibe that's almost more in a 70s Latin jazz mode – maybe because of the strong bottom end from the trio of Gene Perla on bass, Don Alias on drums, and the mighty Steve Grossman on reeds! It's an especially nice treat to hear Grossman in this setting – a nice change from usual, but one that he really illuminates with his soulful lines – and titles include "Hey Bicho Vamos Nessa", "Risa", "The Greeting", "On The Foot Peg", "A Child Is Born" and "Libra Rising". A tremendous debut from Tunico – a record that seems certain to begin an amazing legacy in Brazilian music – at a level that has this young musician easily rivaling some of our favorites from the past! The set's got this way of mixing earthy roots with very modern arrangements – all set to warmly jazzy instrumentation, at a level that recalls some of our favorite early 70s experiments by artists like Edu Lobo, Hermeto Pascoal, or Airto – especially the latter two right after they'd left the group Quarteto Novo! Tunico himself plays guitar, and both alto and soprano sax – and the tunes have this way of soaring and gliding wonderfully – rhythms that are very organic, but inflected with all sorts of other unusual phrasing on instruments by the leader and other members of the group – more guitar, plus keyboards, flute, bass, and plenty of percussion. The whole thing's extremely beautiful, with a quality that's hard to put into words – and titles include "Decolagem", "Sambola", "Solar Das Hortencias", "Saudade Do Sucupira", "Galope", and "O Que Vira".
