Gunter Lenz SpringtimeRoaring Plenties ... CD
L+R Records/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1979. New Copy ... $16.99 19.99
Fantastic work from bassist Gunter Lenz – a set with maybe a jokey title, but a heck of a lot of power underneath – one of those overlooked German jazz gems from a very special time in the scene! The players here are aware of the farther reaches of jazz, yet work together with more inside stile – yet always with a sensibility that there's a much broader frontier that informs their music! The lineup features Frank St Peter on alto and flute, Lesek Zadlo on tenor and soprano, Johannes Faber on trumpet, Bob Degen on piano, and the great Joe Nay on drums – and titles include "Speed Freak", "Children Of The Night", "The Bear Is Gone", and "Do Not Tear The Posters Down". ✨✧ Gunter Lenz SpringtimeMajor League ... CD
Ultra Vybe/L+R Records (Japan), 1992. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Gunter Lenz can be as great of a leader as he is a bassist – and that's definitely the case here, on a very horn-heavy session that shows off a side of Gunter's vision that you might not expect from his core instrument! The group's a sextet, with wonderfully intertwining work from Ernst Ludwig Petrowsky on alto and flute, Gebhard Ullman on tenor and bass clarinet, and Claus Stotter on trumpet and flugelhorn – players who get solos that are often very out at points, but always held in nicely by the sharper rhythms delivered by Lenz on bass with Thomas Cremer on drums and Bob Degen on piano. Titles include "Majorleague", "Heavy Petal", "Subtone Bells", "Floating Open Times", "Bluesarna", and "Back To The Earth". CD
