Slide Hampton QuartetFabulous Slide Hampton Quartet (80s issue) ... LP
EMI/Pathe (France), 1969. Near Mint- ... $19.99 24.99
A real treat – one of the few small group sessions ever recorded by Slide Hampton during the 60s! The session was cut in Paris, where Hampton had taken up residence at the end of the decade – and was done with an all-star group that features Joachim Kuhn on piano, Niels-Henning Orsted-Pederson on bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drums. The quality of the work is great – with very long tracks that dance with the freedom you'd expect from Kuhn's piano work, yet which also still swing very nicely in Hampton's usual groove. In all, we'd be tempted to rate this one as one of the more free-thinking trombone jazz sides of the 60s – and it's certainly one of Slide's finest records overall! Titles include "Last Minute Blues", "Lament", "Chop Suey", "Impossible Waltz", and "In Case Of Emergency". LP, Vinyl record album
(80s Le Jazz En France issue. Cover has light ring impressions and a small worn spot at the top seam.)

Fats NavarroFabulous Fats Navarro Vol 1 ... LP
Blue Note, Early 50s. Sealed ... $14.99 24.99
Trumpeter Fats Navarro was one of the true giants of the early bop years, but he passed away at a young age just as the music was taking off – leaving behind just a handful of killer recordings to document his legacy! This set was put together by Blue Note as a great reminder of his genius – a style on the trumpet that was different than that of Dizzy Gillespie or Miles Davis – and which really set the tone for some of the more expressive players who would follow him on the instrument. Navarro is incredibly deft, yet never in a way that calls attention to itself too much – truly organic, and set up here in groups led by pianists Tadd Dameron and Bud Powell, plus some recordings in a group he co-led with trumpeter Howard McGhee. Titles on this first volume include "Wail", "The Chase", "The Squirrel", "Our Delight", and "Dameronia". LP, Vinyl record album
(80s DMM pressing with obi, still sealed in the perforated sleeve with hype sticker.)

Charlie ParkerFabulous Sextet (aka All Star Sextet) ... LP
Disques Vogue (France), Early 1950s. Very Good ... $19.99
Classic bop session work, featuring Bird, Miles, JJ Johnson, Max Roach, Duke Jordan, and Tommy Potter. There's no surprises here, but the playing's tight as a tick, and the short tracks are a fierce declaration of the bop idiom. Titles include "Bongo Bop", "Bird Feathers", "Klactoveedsedtene", "Crazeology", "Don't Blame Me", "Dewey Square", "Air Conditioning", "Scrapple From the Apple" and "Quasimodo". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Trudy Pitts With Pat MartinoLegends Of Acid Jazz – Introducing The Fabulous Trudy Pitts/These Blues Of Mine ... CD
Prestige/ZYX (Germany), 1967. Used ... Out Of Stock
Amazing stuff – even if we do hate the way it's packaged! This long-overdue CD brings together 2 of the rare rare rare albums that organist Trudy Pitts cut for Prestige in the late 60s, along with her husband, drummer Bill Carney, and guitarist Pat Martino. If you don't know Trudy, she's got a totally unique approach to the organ that hovers somewhere between Jack McDuff and Walter Wanderley, but which also grooves in a way that's totally her own. On this set of 19 tracks, Trudy plays most of the lead solos, and also sings a bit in a wonderfully rich soulful voice – very much in the style you'd hear if you caught her at a small club session in her native Philly. We've been waiting for this stuff to come out on CD for years, and we've been playing this CD non-stop since it arrived in our offices! Tracks include "Steppin In Minor", "Organology", "Siete", "Man & A Woman", "Teddy Makes Three", and a very groovy version of "The Spanish Flea"! CD
(Out of print German pressing.)

✨✧ Bill HolmanComplete Big Band Recordings (Fabulous Bill Holman/In A Jazz Orbit/Bill Holman's Great Big Band/bonus tracks) ... CD
Lonehill (Spain), 1954/1957/1958/1960. Used 2CD ... Out Of Stock
A full package of work from the mighty Bill Holman – 2CDs worth of music – including three full albums plus bonus tracks! First up is material from the 1957 Coral album The Fabulous Bill Holman – a record that's got a maturity of expression that pushes Holman way past his Kenton years! The tracks are all larger ensemble ones, arranged and partially written by Bill, and played by the group in a broad chromatic style that's very nice – certainly Kenton-esque, but with a style that's somehow a bit more personal. Players include Charlie Mariano, Herb Geller, Richie Kamuca, Conte Cantoli, Stu Williamson, and Holman himself – and titles include "Evil Eyes", "You & I", "Bright Eyes", and the extended "The Big Street" – a great 17 minute tune! Next Is In A Jazz Orbit – a set that has Holman in a great mode that bridges the large group styles of the swing years and the changes in big band sounds that would take place in the 60s – and he's almost prefacing the style of the Clarke Boland Big Band by writing charts here that pack a real punch on the ensemble passages, yet which also rely very strongly on breakaway horn solos to tear up the tunes! The strength of the players is a key factor in the success of the album – as soloists include Frank Rosolino, Jack Sheldon, Herb Geller, Richie Kamuca, and Holman himself – on titles that include "Kissin Bug", "You Go To My Head", "Far Down Below", "Aura", "Theme & Variation #2", and "No Heat". Bill Holman's Great Big Band is a session from 1960 that has Bill Holman still sitting nicely at the top of the west coast large group format from the 50s! As with previous dates of this nature, Holman's got a way around the charts that few can match – a way of swinging the whole ensemble strongly, yet never in ways that are cloying, commercial, or cliched. All the right players find a space for expression – and the lineup includes Richie Kamuca and Bill Perkins on tenor sax, Frank Rosolino on trombone, and Conte Candoli on trumpet – all players who really sparkle nicely when they step out from the larger group. Titles include "Stereoso", "Shadrack", "Quickstep", "Aura", "The Moon Is Blue", "June Is Busting Out All Over", and "Spinuet". CD features 10 more bonus tracks – tunes from Holman's Kenton Presents sessions for Capitol in 1954 – octet material done with Don Fagerquist, Bob Eneveldsen, and Stu Williamson providing full brass support on trumpet and trombones – while Holman, Herb Geller, and Bob Gordon cut some broader lines themselves on saxes. Tunes are all great originals by Holman – extremely inventive in both melody and structure – with titles that include "Sparkle", "Tanglefoot", "Song Without Words", "Cousin Jack", "Back To Minors", and "Jughaid". ✨✧ Thad JonesFabulous Thad Jones ... CD
Debut/Victor (Japan), Mid 50s/Early 60s. Used ... Out Of Stock
A 60s LP that brings together work that Thad recorded with the Charles Mingus groups of the mid 50s – originally issued on 10" LPs in the 50s, but brought together here in a full LP that combines some excellent tracks! The material is played by 2 small groups – one with Jones, Mingus, John Dennis, and Max Roach; the other with Jones and Mingus, plus Hank Jones, Kenny Clarke, and Frank Wess. The overall feel is less experimental than later Mingus, but still has an arch edge to it that keeps things compelling. Titles include "Elusive", "Sombre Intrusion", "Bitty Ditty", "Get Out Of Town", and "More Of The Same". CD

Grant GreenLive At The Lighthouse ... CD
Blue Note (Japan), 1972. New Copy ... $14.99 19.99
A soaring set from guitarist Grant Green – a really amazing double-length set that caps off his legendary run for Blue Note – done with a vibe that's different than most of his other work for the label! Like some of the other Lighthouse sessions from Blue Note – particularly those from Lee Morgan and Elvin Jones – this one has a very open, free vibe – a way of stretching out on the tracks, yet still staying soulful – all an amazing document of the rich talents of the leader in a live setting! The group's a bit unique, too – and features Gary Coleman on vibes, Shelton Laster on organ, Claude Bartee on tenor and soprano sax, Wilton Felder on bass, and Greg Williams on drums – all players who hit this hip Cali groove with Green – and really take off on cuts that include versions of Donald Byrd's "Fancy Free", Neal Creque's "Windjammer", and The Fabulous Counts' "Jan Jan" – plus the cuts "Flood In Franklin Park", "Walk In The Night", and "Betcha By Golly Wow". Fabulous stuff – one of the legendary albums that funky flute player Bobbi Humphrey cut with producer Larry Mizell! The record's a prime example of the Mizell genius at work – as Larry's arranged these fantastic backdrops for Bobbi's flute – soaring keyboard lines, layers and layers of rhythm, and just enough space for Bobbi to come in and send the record to the heavens with her spiritually grooving sound. Harvey Mason plays drums, Jerry Peters is on keyboards, and the rest of the group's an all-star LA studio jazz assemblage – perfectly fit together by Larry's arrangements and production in that classic cosmic mid 70s Mizell wall of sound! ✨✧ Ornette ColemanComplete Live At The Hillcrest Club ... CD
Gambit (Spain), 1958. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A complete issue of a groundbreaking late 50s performance by Ornette Coleman – some of which has been released on the French album Fabulous Paul Bley Quintet, and other parts on albums under Ornette's name! The quality of the performance is amazing – some of the freshest jazz recorded in LA at the time, but still somewhat more inside than Coleman's work of the decade to come – a key transitional moment from Ornette, played by a group that features Don Cherry on trumpet, Charlie Haden on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums – plus a young Paul Bley on piano, who makes for a very different rhythmic conception than some of the Coleman quartet albums of a year or two later! Given Bley's approach to the piano, even at this point, the sound is still quite different than most of what had come before – almost in the territory of some of Eric Dolphy's early albums for New Jazz. Titles include "Free", "The Blessing", "When Will The Blues Leave", "Ramblin", "Crossroads", "How Deep Is The Ocean", "Klactoveesedstene", and "I Remember Harlem". CD
