The quintet is playing here before a very live audience, at the Olympia in Paris, during a time when the Jazz Messengers were having a very fruitful relationship with the city. The time is the mid 60s, and after a few years of working with Lalo Schifrin in his group, Dizzy's changed his Latin bag from hard-edged Cubop to mellower more complicated Bossa and modal jazz. The result is some of the most sophisticated playing in Dizzy's career – hitched to a groove that's still filled with soul and fire, and which rolls on in a compelling way that always hooks us hard! The group features Kenny Barron on piano, and reed work by James Moody, one of the other great secrets of the mid 60s! A very different album than usual from Jan Akkerman – but in a really nice way! The album's not nearly as guitar-heavy and rock-leaning as some of Jan's other sets from the 70s – and has a bubbling sort of soul-based finish, one that's arranged by Akkerman with some help from Mike Gibbs – and which almost has a funky dancefloor appeal at times! The jazz component of the record is still relatively strong, in a tripped-out funky fusion way – but there's enough of a consistent pulse to the album to really keep things on track nicely! Includes the spacey "Pavane", which has great keyboards from Joachim Kuhn, and the nicely breaking "Streetwalker" – plus the cuts "Angel Watch", "Crackers", "Skydancer", "Floatin", and "Gate To Europe". Classic MPS session by funky pianist Monty Alexander! This one's filled with moody trio material, played by Alexander's tight little group with Senator Eugene Wright on bass and Bobby Durham on drums. Wright's basslines are nice and warm, and roll off in a groovy way with Alexander's tightly punctuated piano lines. The LP includes the tracks "Monticello", "We've Only Just Begun", "Love Story", and "Summer Of 42" – all done in nice groovy versions. The album was issued in Europe with the title We've Only Just Begun – but this is the US version, with a different title but the same cover. LP, Vinyl record album

A great 2CD set that captures the genius of Fred Anderson during his prime years as a spokesperson for Chicago's AACM! Anderson's style has changed quite a bit since these rare recordings – making them important for understanding his progression as a musician, not to mention essential if you're a fan of his work, or the spiritual strands of the AACM during the 70s. The group on both records features Anderson on tenor, Billy Brimfield on trumpet, Steven Palmore on bass, and Hamid Drake on drums and tablas. The first disc features the Dark Day album, issued briefly by Message records in Europe in 1979, and the second disc features a previously unissued live set, recorded in Verona in 1979, featuring material that complements the Dark Day set very nicely! Titles include "Saxoon", "Dark Day", "Three On Two", "The Prayer", and "The Bull". CD

A great set from AACM legend – tenorist Fred Anderson – cut in the very familiar home territory of his Velvet Lounge in Chicago! Anderson had been tending bar and leading jam sessions at the tavern since his return from Europe in the early 80s – but ended up purchasing the venue towards the end of the next decade – and quickly turned it into one of the real hotspots for the rising Chicago avant garde! This classic live set features Anderson caught in his home turf, in the company of bassist Peter Kowald and drummer Hamid Drake – prime example of the kind of local/international crossover sets that were really shaking the Chicago scene in the 90s. The set features 3 long tracks – "Straight, But Not Straight", "To Those Who Know", and "Multidimensional Reality". CD

A huge chapter of work from the Art Ensemble Of Chicago – one that not only includes their own albums for the ECM label, but also related solo and side projects too! The set begins with four Art Ensemble albums – Nice Guys, Full Force, Urban Bushman, and The Third Decade – all of which came out as a statement of the group's strengths in the late 70s and early 80s – their first mainstream appearance after a few years of being very underground, and material that helped set a whole new standard for avant jazz expression in the generation to come! Next is the fantastic album Divine Love, by trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith – not necessarily an Art Ensemble album, but one that does feature great work from trumpeter Leo Smith – plus trumpeter Kenny Wheeler, bassist Charlie Haden, and vibist Bobby Naughton. Next are four albums by Lester Bowie – two smaller group, and two with his Brass Fantasy ensemble – the records The Great Pretender, All The Magic/The One & Only, I Only Have Eyes For You, and Avant Pop. Then, after Bowie's early passing, the Art Ensemble recorded their beautiful Tribute To Lester – as a trio lineup with Roscoe Mitchell, Malachi Favors, and Don Moye. Mitchell takes the helm next – on a surprisingly big flurry of projects for ECM – records that often show a deeper compositional strand in his music – on records that include Nine To Get Ready, Composition/Improvisation, Far Side, Bells For The South Side, and Boustrophedon – the last of which was led by Evan Parker, with Mitchell in the Transatlantic Art Ensemble. Last up are three records by drummer Jack DeJohnette for ECM – New Directions and New Directions In Europe, both featuring a group with Lester Bowie on trumpet – and Made In Chicago, which features Roscoe Mitchell, Henry Threadgill, and Muhal Ricard Abrams. Recordings were made between 1978 and 2015 – and comes in a box set with a big booklet of notes! CD

Don't be put off by the title – as these guys aren't abrasive in the way that some noise act might be – and instead, they've got this really complex way of spinning out improvised sounds on an array of instruments – all in a spirit that's very much like the German work on the FMP label at the time! Axolotl are much more obscure – as a French trio, they were more overlooked – but they really share an ear for the best free improvisation that was exploding in the hippest scenes in Europe by the end of the 70s – served up here in a two-reed lineup that has Jacques Oger on tenor, baritone, and other reeds – and Etienne Brunet on alto, bass clarinet, and more – accompanied by guitarist Marc Duford. As you can imagine, with a lineup like that, there's plenty of fresh sounds within – delivered on shorter tracks that really keep their focus, with titles that include "Illusion", "Ombre Pilee", "Suave", "Dehors", "Paris Froisse", "Trottoirs Defunts", and "Couloir". A really wonderful addition to the too-small body of work left behind by the great Albert Ayler – a set that brings together some really obscure performances done during a visit to Europe in 1966! We're not sure these have ever appeared elsewhere – at least that we can find in digging around ourselves – and the first three tracks on the set are especially nice, done for a film production in Munich, with variations on "Ghosts", "Our Prayer", and "Infinite Spirit" – all done in shortish takes that really focus on the "tune" more than longer live ones. And if you like the latter, don't worry – as there's plenty of that here too – served up on concert performances in Rotterdam and Helsinki from November of 1966 – with Ayler on tenor, Don Ayler on trumpet, Michel Samson on violin, William Folwell on bass, and Beaver Harris on drums. These live selections include "Bells/Infinite Spirit", "Prophet", "Truth Is Marching In", "Change Has Come", and "Divine Peace Maker". CD

Lovingly repackaged by the Rearward label – and including the tracks "Israel", "Beyond The Corner", "Crucial Moment", and "Free Duet". CD

An excellent album that's a perfect document of the strong impact that Quincy Jones had in the transatlantic jazz scene of the late 50s and early 60s! The set was recorded in 1960, and features two players that Quincy would leave behind in Europe to have a huge influence on the scene. Trumpeter Benny Bailey is the greatest of these – and his impact on jazz in Germany and Sweden during the 60s and 70s cannot be discounted. The other is drummer Joe Harris, who does excellent work here in a group that includes Arne Domnerus on sax, Ake Persson on trombone, and Gunnar Svensson on piano – all Swedes that Quincy picked up after touring the country heavily during the late 50s. The set grooves with the best of Jones' work on Mercury from the time – and although Quincy's not listed in the credits, it's probably only because of contractual reasons. Titles are all Jones originals – including "Meet Benny Bailey", "Plenty, Plenty Soul", "Fallen Feathers", and "The Midnight Sun Never Sets". CD

Fantastic material by Chet Baker – a series of selections recorded for Prestige Records after his return from Europe – done with a lot more bite than his 50s material! The group here is very hip – George Coleman on tenor, Kirk Lightsey on piano, Herman Wright on bass, and Roy Brooks on drums – a quartet of very cool youngsters from Detroit – and Chet also blows fluegelhorn,w hich makes for a different vibe too. This album features the material from the albums Cool Burnin With The Chet Baker Quintet and Boppin With The Chet Baker Quintet. CD

A heck of a Hammond set – and from Europe, no less! Lou Bennett was a visionary player from the US who recorded some of his best work in the French scene of the 60s – grooving in a mode that was clearly inspired by Jimmy Smith, but which also showed some of the talent for pushing the Hammond past its boundaries – as would show up more heavily in the work of Larry Young. Like Young, Bennett displays an early affinity for the work of Coltrane – apparent here from the album's leadoff take on Trane's jaunty "Moment's Notice". Other tracks on the set are equally striking – and include versions of Ornette Coleman's "Jane" and JJ Johnson's "JJ" – as well as 2 great originals by Rene Thomas, who plays guitar in the quartet – "I Remember Sonny" and "Indicatif" – plus Bennett's own "Enfin". Obscure recording by the great trombonist Slide Hampton, and one of the last that he made in the US before disappearing to Europe for a long while. The set's put together by trombonist Harold Betters for the Gateway label, based in Betters' home base of Pittsburgh. The two players trade off solo lines and arrangements here, but the bulk of the tracks have Slide penning the charts. As always, his work in this respect is flawless, and the LP grooves nicely with a nice bottom sound. Cuts include "Major Minor", "Rum & Coke", "The Beat", and "The New Waltz". LP, Vinyl record album

Seminal work from Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers – recorded at a time when that group was really coming together! After a slightly wayward year of 1957, when the Messengers had a different lineup away from Blue Note, Art re-forged the group for the end of the 50s with a rock-solid array of players – including a young Lee Morgan on trumpet and Bobby Timmons on piano, plus Benny Golson on tenor, with a sense of arrangement that really helps give the group some focus – while still letting the solos open up in a live setting like this! All tracks are long, and played with lots of fire – and the kind of amazing open-ended solos that the group could cook up whenever they were working in a live environment. Titles on this second volume include "Moanin With Hazel", "Blues March For Europe #1", "Like Someone In Love", and "We Named It Justice". LP, Vinyl record album

The concert is one of those wonderful meetings of American and European jazz talents in a large group setting – the kind of mode that cooked up most famously in the Clark Boland Big Band of the 60s – but which also was simmering all over Europe in the decade – as it does here with additional work from Europeans Ack Van Rooyen on trumpet, Stefan Von Dobrzynski on tenor and flute, Gunter Meier on piano, and Siegfried Schmidt on trombone. The tunes are mostly hard-swinging, and exploding with colors – very much in a mid 60s MPS/Saba mode – with a nice balance between individuality and group sound. Titles include "Berlin Calling", "Boris", "Opus C-Moll 794", "Trifi", "Boogie Waltz", and the long "Ferien Suite". CD

Anthony Braxton heads up a saxophone quartet here, in case you couldn't guess from the title – and the group features some especially great work from Ingrid Laubrock, who blows soprano and tenor on three of the album's four CDs! The set features four different performances recorded in 2022, all live and in Europe – with a lineup that also features James Fei on sopranino and alto saxes, Chris Jonas on alto and tenor, and Andre Vida on baritone, tenor, and soprano on the one CD that does not feature Laubrock. The tunes are all Braxton compositions – numbered 436 through 439 – but as always with his work, the performances are very improvised and free, with some interplay between the reeds that goes way farther than earlier sax quartet modes! That is, nobody feels as if they have to provide rhythm or melody at all – and Braxton himself really lets loose – adding some electronics to his work on alto, soprano, and sopranino. 4CD set includes a great 40 page book, with photos and an essay on the music!
