A tremendous step forward for the young Muhal Richard Abrams – a set that still shows his early roots in the AACM, but which also blossoms with some of his more serious compositional efforts to come! There's a sensitivity here that really stands out – even among Abrams' contemporaries – a striving for a wider range of expression – some as bold as before, some much more deeply personal and intimate. The tracks feature a shifting array of players – working alongside Abrams piano, and building up the sound in a number of different ways. Green's work on guitar is especially nice – stretched out, but never trippy, with a tight single note style that really gets the most out of the grooves – in a great lineup that features Blue Mitchell on trumpet, Claude Bartee on tenor, Emanuel Riggins on Hammond, Jimmy Lewis on bass, and Candido on congas. Soaring, spiritual jazz from Bobby Hutcherson – one of his soulful, modal killers for Blue Note in the 70s – and a record that's done in a style that's very similar to Bobby's work with Harold Land! This time around, Emanuel Boyd is on deck on tenor, flute, and soprano sax – blowing with a wonderfully warm sound that fits the mood of Hutcherson's vibes perfectly – lots of sharp changes and edges, yet never too many to get in the way of the overall groove. Other players include the mighty George Cables on piano, Eddie Marshall on drums, and Kenneth Nash on percussion – adding in a little extra to underscore the spiritual elements of the tunes. A record of incredible beauty – and hardly what you'd expect to hear from John Zorn! The set's a gentle batch of instrumentals – penned with almost an ear for the ancient, although delivered in ways that also owe something to contemporary acoustic recordings as well – a blend that would already be compelling enough on its own, but which is even more amazing coming from Zorn! There's no sax at all on the set – Zorn's role here is only as composer – and music is handled by the great trio of Bill Frisell on guitar, Kenny Wolleson on vibes and bells, and Carol Emanuel on harp – a musical blend that's filled with warmly ringing tones that are mighty nice. Mighty nice work from drummer Francesco Sotgiu – a player we're not sure we've ever heard at the helm before, but who does a superb job with a very cool Italian combo that moves between modal numbers and more hardbop-styled jazz – all with plenty of strong sounds from reed players Emanuele Cisi and Riccardo Luppi, both of whom really make the record soar! Both players handle tenor and soprano, and Luppi blows a bit of flute – in a combo that also features excellent work from Salvatore Maiore on bass, a player with a bold sound that matches the crispness of Sotgiu's drums in the mix – sewn together by these massive piano lines from Luigi Bonafede.
