Ella Fitzgerald & Joe PassFitzgerald & Pass – Again ... LP
Pablo, 1976. Very Good+ ... $11.99
Ella Fitzgerald and Joe Pass return to the studio just a few years after their initial meeting – once again to work in a stripped-down duet format that's completely sublime! The spare setting is one that Ella never got in the older days – and there's an intimacy here that almost makes it like we're hearing a new singer entirely – one who's not surging over bigger band arrangements, but laying back and singing in a mode that's almost more torchy than we could have ever expected. Pass' guitar is acoustic, and gentle – and titles include "All Too Soon", "One Note Samba", "Rain", "You Took Advantage Of Me", "That Old Feeling", "I've Got The World On A String", and "Nature Boy". Ella Fitzgerald & Joe PassTake Love Easy ... LP
Pablo, 1973. Very Good+ ... Just Sold Out!
One of the great Pablo Records efforts to revisit the jazz sound of the 50s – but in fresh new ways allowed by the freer recording modes of the 70s! The album features Ella Fitgerald and Joe Pass, plus nobody else – just voice and guitar coming together in quiet, introspective ways that are completely sublime, and a very nice change from some of Ella's fuller band recordings of the few years before this album. And far from being sleepy, the intimacy of the record almost seems to set a new kind of fire – one that comes from the gentle persona of Ella, which is a far cry from the glass-breaking singer that she'd come to be known as in the mainstream! Titles include "Take Love Easy", "Once I Loved", "Lush Life", "You're Blase", "A Foggy Day", "I Want To Talk About You", and "You Go To My Head". (Vocalists, Jazz) LP, Vinyl record album
(French pressing. Cover has minor gloss separation spots and light wear.)

Ella Fitzgerald & Louis ArmstrongElla & Louis ... LP
Verve, Late 50s. Near Mint- ... $19.99
Classic duets between Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong – done in a sweet mode that only could have been handled by Verve in the 50s! Backings are in a nice small combo mode – with Armstrong on both trumpet and vocals – and Ella and Louis carry most of the set with their great vocal interplay – warm, personal, and pretty darn charming – in a mode that should be hokey, but comes across great, thanks to the quality of both vocalists! Titles include "April In Paris", "Can't We Be Friends", "Isn't This A Lovely Day", "Under A Blanket Of Blue", and "A Foggy Day". (Vocalists, Jazz) LP, Vinyl record album
(Recent 180 gram UK pressing.)

A set that's maybe even nicer than the Ella & Louis work together on Porgy & Bess – given that backing is by the trio of Oscar Peterson, which gives the whole thing a nicely understated charm – at a level that really lets the charms of the duo shine through! (Vocalists, Jazz) LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Ella FitzgearldSongs In A Mellow Mood ... LP
Decca, 1954. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A wonderful lost gem from Ella Fitzgerald – very much in the mellow mood hinted at in the title, with only the piano of Ellis Larkins to back her up! The sound is incredible – and even very different than any of the work she recorded at Verve – with a moody, evocative quality that seems to offer up a whole different side of Ella than we'd ever known. Larkins is always perfect in such a setting – able to be richly emotive on the keys without interfering with the singer at all – and honestly, we're stunned to hear how much Ella makes with the empty space left on the set, and wish we'd had more of a chance to hear her in this format. Titles include "Please Be Kind", "I'm Glad There Is You", "Nice Work If You Can Get It", "Imagination", and "Until The Real Thing Comes Along". (Vocalists, Jazz) LP, Vinyl record album
(Japanese pressing, with obi – VIM 4503)

Cootie Williams & Wini BrownAround Midnight With Cootie Williams & Wini Brown ... LP
Jaro, Late 50s. Very Good+ ... $11.99
A cool session from Cootie Williams – working here as a vocalist as much as a trumpeter, often in the company of female singer Wini Brown! The set has both singers working together on some hip duets, then stepping apart and working on their own for some tracks too – an approach that's a bit like the Louis Armstrong/Ella Fitzgerald recordings over at Verve, but handled here with a bit more swing overall! Arrangements are by Quincy Jones, who knows how to make the record move nicely – and who also keeps things away from any too-hokey territory – and titles include "Around Midnight", "Bewitched", "That Old Feeling", "Goin Around", "Lover", and "Gone Again". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono white label promo with deep groove. Cover has a partially split top seam, but is otherwise in nice shape.)
