DeodatoArtistry ... LP
MCA, 1974. Near Mint- ... $5.99 7.99
A live set from Deodato – but one that's very much in the mode of his best CTI studio sessions – with soaring, over the top keyboard work that's totally great – backed by some tightly compressed guitar, bass, and drums, with just enough funk in the mix to keep things interesting! As with other Deodato records from the time, there's a mix of moods here that comes together nicely – a range that goes past his easy hits, and shows Deodato to be one of the hippest, most soulful keyboard talents of his generation. Titles include a great version of "Super Strut" that grooves for over 8 minutes, and which has some firey guitar that really competes with Deodato's work on the keys – and other tracks include "Farewell To A Friend", "Pavane For A Dead Princess", "Rio Sangre", and "Jivin". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has light wear and lightly bent corners.)

DeodatoDeodato 2 ... LP
CTI, 1973. Very Good Gatefold ... $9.99
Funky keyboards galore – and one of the greatest records ever from this legendary Brazilian jazz talent! The album follows nicely off Deodato's Prelude classic for CTI – and like that one, this set's built on long-flowing tunes that rise and fall with a wonderful sense of rhythm – a sublime electric piano groove that's quite different than anything Deodato recorded before – and possibly never realized this perfectly again after his CTI years. Other players include Stanley Clarke on bass, Billy Cobham on drums, and Hubert Laws on flute – and titles include the massive Latin funk track "Super Strut", plus the tunes "Pavane For A Dead Princess", "Skyscrapers", and a great version of "Nights In White Satin". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has surface wear and a small sticker remnant.)

DeodatoFirst Cuckoo ... LP
MCA, 1975. Near Mint- ... $11.99
Key proof that Deodato kept on making great records after leaving CTI Records – and in a way, the kind of set that allowed him a bit more freedom to grow than some of his contemporaries! The vibe here is a bit tighter than before, but in a way that makes many numbers even funkier – played by small combos on all tunes, with players that include Hubert Laws, Steve Gadd, John Tropea, and other early 70s fusion heavyweights – all jamming with Deodato's great work on electric piano and clavinet! There's a great variety of material here, but as usual with Deodato, even familiar tunes get really transformed – in this case into soulful fusion numbers with a sound that we never would have expected! Titles include "Caravan", "Funk Yourself", "Crabwalk", "First Cuckoo", and versions of Marcos Valle's "Adam's Hotel" and Led Zep's "Black Dog"! LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes MCA inner sleeve. Cover has light wear on bottom corner, but is nice overall.)

DeodatoLove Island ... LP
Warner, 1978. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $9.99
Late 70s work from Deodato – quite different than his bossa organ work of the 60s, and early 70s funk sides – but pretty darn great nonetheless! The album shows Deodato's continuing shift towards a more soul-based sound – and it mixes together a smoother club sound with jazzier elements of earlier work, all going for a sweet groove that has plenty of traces of modern soul! The highlight of the album is "Whistle Bump", a strident slick groover with washes of horns behind the keyboards and a nice conga breakdown in the middle. Other tracks include "Area Code 808", "Pina Colada", "Tahiti Hut", "San Juan Sunset", and "Love Island". LP, Vinyl record album
(US pressing.)

✨✧ DeodatoPrelude ... CD
CTI, 1972. Used ... $6.99
A legendary album from the 70s funk scene – and one of the crowning achievements of keyboard maestro Eumir Deodato! Deodato got his start during the bossa years of the 60s – where his sophisticated charts were already enough to make his career a landmark – but in the following decade he picked up the Fender Rhodes, and really took off in a great new direction with classic records like this! The set's a wonderful blend of larger charts and jazzy soloing – with sublime Rhodes lines from the leader, plus a mix of acoustic and electric instrumentation in the best CTI mode – underscored by percussion from both Ray Barretto and Airto. The features Deodato's remake of "Also Sprach Zarathustra" into the funky "2001" – soaring with Fender Rhodes lines that set a new standard for the instrument, with a funky undercurrent that few would have expected for the tune. Other tracks are nice too – and include a great bossa-y version of "Baubles Bangles & Beads", plus "Spirit Of Summer", "September 13", and "Carly & Carole". CD
(Out of print. Digipack pressing.)

DeodatoWhirlwinds ... LP
MCA, 1974. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $24.99
Sweet keyboard soul from Deodato – a set that steps off nicely from the strengths of his big hits on CTI, hitting a similarly flowing groove that's really great! The instrumentation here is a bit more expanded than before, but never in a way that buries the keyboards – and Deodato's right out front on a range of electric keys that get some great support from John Tropea's finely-honed work on guitar! Titles include "Havana Strut", "Whirlwinds", "West 42nd Street", and a nice cover of Steely Dan's "Do It Again". And heck, even the album's version of Glen Miller's "Moonlight Serenade" manages to come off like a funk tune! LP, Vinyl record album

Deodato & AirtoDeodato In Concert – Live At The Felt Forum ... LP
CTI, 1974. Very Good+ ... $7.99
An excellent little live set from Deodato – hard to believe because the sound's just as tight and funky as his studio albums, and possibly even more interesting because he manages to pull it off equally well in a live setting! The record features percussion by Airto, guitar by John Tropea, and vocals by Flora Purim – and those are just the marquee names of a large and amazing grew of great musicians! All tracks are long and complicated, for very hynotic feel throughout. The funkiest number is "Tropea", which has a nice long 8 minute groove – and the set also features a cover of Steely Dan's "Do It Again", plus the tracks "Parana", "Branches", "Baubles, Bangles And Beads" and "Skyscraper". Amazing! LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes CTI inner sleeve.)

✨✧ DeodatoOs Catedraticos – Ataque ... CD
Equipe/Far Out (UK), 1965. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
An organ bossa classic from the legendary Eumir Deodato – one of his strongest albums from his early years in Brazil! There's a very jazzy feel to the set all the way through – thanks to a tightly arranged group that not only features the organ and percussion you might expect from such a date, but which also features some great horn work as well! Trombone, tenor, and baritone sax all get in some nice licks – and Deodato's organ cooks wonderfully throughout, often with a quick-stepping bossa jazz sound that really keeps things lively. Titles include "O Sol Nascera", "Samba Do Dom Natural", "Terra De Ninguem", "E Bom Parar", and "Ataque". (Brazil, Jazz) CD

✨✧ DeodatoSomewhere Out There ... CD
Atlantic, 1989. Used ... Out Of Stock
Way more pop than jazz from Deodato – a record that has the keyboardist working with a trio of younger vocalists who alternate lyrics on each track in the set! The approach here takes off from Deodato's strong soul production and arranging work of earlier years, but has a bit more of a crossover sound overall – still echoing strains of his R&B side in the rhythms, yet exposing the real agenda a bit more in the lead vocals of the tunes. Keyboards aren't nearly as important to the sound as the drum programs on the record – and titles include "Everybody Wants To Be My Girl", "Where Can You Run", "When A Lover Says Goodbye", "Forever For You", "Stay With Me", and "Somewhere Out There". CD

Robin KenyattaGypsy Man ... CD
Atlantic/Wounded Bird, 1973. New Copy ... $3.99 11.98
Sweet electric funk from Robin Kenyatta – but a set with some slightly complicated moments too! The album's a bit like some of Yusef Lateef's more electric moments on Atlantic, although probably not as cerebral overall – and Robin plays a range of reeds, including alto, flute, and soprano sax – the last of which is the best fit for the record, as Kenyatta plays it with a nicely snakey sort of style! Most tracks have a strong mix of keyboards and guitar – the former played by either Larry Willis or Pat Rebillot, the latter by David Spinoza or Keith Loving. Stanley Clarke plays bass on most of the set, and there's definitely some of his influence going on here too – and one track features added vocals by Robin and Lalome Wahsburn. Deodato arranged a version of "Last Tango In Paris" – and other titles include "Gypsy Man", "Melodie Chinoise", "Werewolf", "Another Freight Train", "Seems So Long", and "Reflective Silence". CD

Cesar Mariano & CIASao Paulo - Brasil ... CD
RCA/Mr Bongo (UK), 1977. New Copy ... $9.99 11.98
A fantastic bit of funky fusion from Brazil – one of the most hard-hitting albums we've ever heard from keyboardist Cesar Mariano! Mariano had a long legacy in music that included great arrangements for Elis Regina – but this set is completely different than most of his other work – almost in a CTI Records sort of vein, as if Mariano were trying to follow the mode of his contemporary Deodato – but with a stronger current of Brazilian jazz, especially all of the complexity that was coming into that music at the time. Most of the instrumentation is electric – with a great mix of guitars, bass, and keyboards – but there's also nice use of acoustic bass and piano – for a groove that's both funky, but also touched with strong elements of Brazilian jazz. Titles include the cool funky track "Metropole", the break cut "Fabrica", and the mellow groover "Imigrantes" – as well as the tunes "Metro", "Litoral", and "Futebol De Bar". (Brazil, Jazz) CD

Wes MontgomeryDown Here On The Ground ... LP
CTI/A&M, 1968. Very Good Gatefold ... $19.99
Super-dope work from the great Wes Montgomery – set to excellent early CTI arrangements from Don Sebesky and Deodato! The groove is nice and airy – with Wes' guitar floating over the top, yet still present enough to ring out loud and clear on all the tightly plucked notes – and the arrangements are never constricting or confining, and instead have a very open vision that really lets Montgomery's sound soar! Herbie Hancock's on piano, and Mike Mainieri adds some nice touches on vibes – and the balance of sounds, tones, and colors is simply sublime. Titles include the amazing title cut "Down Here On The Ground" – the start of a whole new generation in jazz – plus "Wind Song", "The Fox", "Goin On To Detroit", "Up & At It", and "When I Look In Your Eyes". LP, Vinyl record album
(Tan label pressing in a matte cover, with light wear, some aging down the opening and a bit of pencil on the back.)

John TropeaTropea ... CD
Marlin/Solid (Japan), 1975. New Copy ... $12.99 14.99
The first album from guitarist John Tropea – an ace 70s session musician, who played on countless records for other folks – and a surprisingly great leader and arranger in his own right too! Tropea's working here in a vibe that's clearly influenced by the CTI sound – smooth but funky fusion – laid down in prime studio conditions, but still nicely soulful throughout, and without any of the BS that crept into other overly-jamming or too-slick records from the time. Guitar's the lead solo instrument on the set, but the album has a lot of other strong work by players that Deodato, Steve Gadd, Rick Marotta, and Rubens Bassini – making for a very tight set that's stood up wonderfully through the years. Titles include "The Bratt", "Tambourine", "7th Heaven", "The Jingle", "Just Blue", "Muff", and "Dreams". CD

An incredible record – from the first off-key note to the last! The album's filled with some wonderfully moody LA studio sounds, arranged by Deodato, and a has a great swirling mix of sound that weaves around Jobim's lofty guitar and piano beautifully – complex, but still with the airy sense of space that Antonio Carlos first brought to his music in the 60s. From the very first note, you can feel the strange magic of Jobim and Deodato at work – as the album appears to be smooth and mellow, yet has a strangely unsettling undertone that keeps us coming back after all these years! Tracks include "Tema Jazz", "Carinhoso", "Rockanalia", and a nice remake of "Girl From Ipanema". Plus, the CD features 4 bonus alternate versions, including an 8 minute take of "Tema Jazz"! A classic bit of lost funky electric piano from Brazil! The album has a similar feel to Deodato's early 70's work, and includes a killer electric version of "Also Sprach Zarathustra" that's very similar to Deodato's "2001" – soaring along on a great funky groove, with lots of excellent piano riffing going on! The rest of the record continues the funky approach of that track, and titles include "Na Baixa Do Sapateiro", "Cosa Nostra", "Kriola", and "Carinhoso" – all soaring along in a sweet blend of Brazilian rhythms and electric jazz funk! ✨✧ Phil UpchurchPhil Upchurch ... CD
Marlin/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1978. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the sweetest fusion sets ever recorded from guitarist Phil Upchurch – a set that's less trippy than his earlier albums, but one that more than makes up for that with a tightly soulful groove! Production is by John Tropea and George Benson – and you can definitely hear their touches here – giving Upchurch a strong sense of focus, yet still allowing plenty of room for those cool sounds and odd lines on his guitar. Arrangements are great throughout – partly handled by Leon Pendarvis, who also plays keyboards on the record with Richard Tee – and augmented by string and flute backings from Deodato. Titles include a great take on "Strawberry Letter 23" – plus "Free", "Good Times", "Church Street Station", "It's Almost Five", "Foolin Around", and "Cyrenna". (Soul, Jazz) CD
