Ornette ColemanShape Of Jazz To Come ... LP
Atlantic, 1959. Near Mint- ... $34.99
An album that certainly lives up to the promise of its title – as it's filled with amazing instrumentation, groundbreaking compositions, and a sound in jazz that few ears could imagine at the time! The groove here is extremely modal – all instruments rolling along on the same rhythmic pulse, with drums, bass, trumpet, and alto sax incredibly intertwined! Ornette's really got an edge on his instrument – cutting even more deeply here than the clipped, punctuated cornet work of Don Cherry – and the rhythm team of Charlie Haden and Billy Higgins are simply amazing – not just keeping up with the energy of Ornette, but also really helping facilitate it as well! Titles include the haunting "Lonely Woman", plus "Peace", "Chronology", and "Focus on Sanity". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Ornette ColemanSoapsuds Soapsuds ... LP
Artists House, 1979. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
One of Ornette's great albums for the obscure Artists House label, and different from the one that he recorded with James Blood Ulmer, which was more of a straight-on Harmelodic work. This one's got him playing a set of tender sensitive duets with bassist and longtime accompanyist Charlie Haden. The set's far from mellow, though, and the two of them work through a great set of material that includes "Sex Spy", "Soap Suds", and the theme to "Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman"! Ornette ColemanThis Is Our Music ... LP
Atlantic, 1961. Near Mint- ... $59.99
A landmark in modern jazz – from the stark stares of the band on the cover, to the starkly haunting music in the grooves! The record makes a bold statement right from the outset – and more than lives up to its promise in the sound within – an amazing approach to modern jazz that's still quite powerful, even all these many years later! The group features Ornette Coleman on alto, Don Cherry on pocket trumpet, Charlie Haden on bass, and Ed Blackwell on drums – moving at a fast, highly rhythmic pace that still leaves us breathless – filled with angles, but wrapped up in soul. The group make severe statements about the future of modern music in tracks like "Humpty Dumpty", "Beauty Is a Rare Thing", and "Kaleidoscope" – bouncing the efforts of the whole group off the beat, in a way that's both challenging and groove-heavy at the same time, a key summation of the genius of Ornette's early vision! Inner City, 1958. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
One of a handful of documents from the late 50s of an early incarnation of Ornette's group, that still featured piano, before he decided to pursue the more limitless possibilities of a keyless harmelodic group. Paul Bley joins Ornette, Don Cherry, Charlie Haden and Billy Higgins in this seminal recording, which offers an altogether different perspective on Coleman's formative years developing the free concept. 4 numbers in all: "Klactoveesedstene", "I Remember Harlem", "The Blessing" and "Free". Warner/Sepia Tone, 1976. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Seminal 70s work from one of the most righteous jazz musicians ever! On this set, Alice Coltrane moves past the rawer spiritual sound of her Impulse albums – working with a more focused vision and an approach to jazz that takes her way past the identity of just being "Mrs Coltrane", into territory that's a more perfect expression of her spiritual vision. The approach calls for more ambitious orchestrations, yet never in a way that overwhelms the jazz basis of the music – and Alice herself is on Fender Rhodes, organ, and harp – working with players who include Fred Jackson and Hubert Laws on reeds, Oscar Brashear on trumpet, George Bohannon on trombone, Charlie Haden on bass, Ben Riley on drums, and Armando Peraza on congas. Impulse, 1971. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Arguably the most classic Alice Coltrane album on Impulse – and a strong group effort that features some great work from Pharoah Sanders! Coltrane leads two different small combos on the record – both with Sanders on saxes, plus either Cecil McBee or Charlie Haden on bass, and Rashied Ali on drums – plus assorted percussion from Tulsi and Majid Shabazz, and some really enigmatic work on oud by Vishnu Wood! Tracks are long and drawn out, and open with the beauty of a field of flowers meeting the dawn – as Alice plays with a sound that's gentle and poetic, but which also has some wonderfully dark undertones. Titles include "Stopover Bombay", "Isis & Osiris", "Shiva-Loka", and "Journey In Satchidananda". CD

Beautifully high concept work from Alice Coltrane – the kind of record you'd use to announce the arrival of a new king – or lord, for that matter! The record features Coltrane at the head of a large group of string players – creating a full, rich sound that serves as the backdrop for the core group of musicians – a trio that features Alice on piano, organ, and harp, plus Charlie Haden on bass and Ben Riley on drums and percussion. The tracks are long, and at times very dark – extremely powerful in their sound, and with a sense of hope, life, and majesty that's extremely inspiring! Alice ColtraneTranslinear Light ... CD
Impulse, 2004. Used ... $11.99
Mindblowing work from Alice Coltrane – an album of incredible beauty that easily sits with the best of her classic early recordings for Impulse! The album's got a spare, contemplative quality, but it's also never sleepy – and instead steps forth with the tonal building and modal moving styles of classics albums like Ptah The El Daoud and Huntington Ashram Monastery. Most tracks feature a trio or quartet – with players that include Ravi Coltrane on saxes, Jack DeJohnette on drums, and Charlie Haden on bass. Alice plays some great Wurlitzer organ on a few cuts – getting this really wonderful "flat" tone to the instrument, one that almost has the same spiritual undertones as a harmonium. The whole thing's great – far better than we could have expected – and titles include "Sita Ram", "Translinear Light", "This Train", "Blue Nile", "Triloka", and "Crescent". CD

✨✧ John ColtraneInfinity ... CD
Impulse/MCA (Japan), 1965/1972. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The John Coltrane sound stretching out to Infinity – beautifully collaborating core spiritual sounds recorded when The Great One was still alive, and later string passages done by Alice Coltrane in the early 70s! The initial tracks are very open and almost easygoing – not the full-on outside expressions of some other Coltrane unreleased sides from the time, but the more cosmic sound of Love Supreme – carried out by musicians that include Alice Coltrane on harp, piano, and organ – plus Pharoah Sanders on tenor, McCoy Tyner on piano, Jimmy Garrison and Charlie Haden on bass, Rashied Ali on percussion, and Elvin Jones on drums. The strings are surprisingly wonderful, too – kind of linking the Coltrane and post-Coltrane generations in ways that are really marvelous, and filled with the kind of majesty that Coltrane should have deserved while still on this planet! Titles include "Living Space", "Joy", "Leo", and "Peace On Earth". CD

A beautiful meeting of two major talents from the left end of jazz – recorded in the early 60's when both were working for Atlantic! Despite the "avant garde" title, this set is straighter than you'd expect – very much in the spirit of Coltrane's work for the label, but with perhaps some of the more angular styles that Cherry was laying down with Ornette Coleman at the time. The session has Coltrane joining Ornette's group of Don Cherry, Charlie Haden, and Ed Blackwell – save for a few numbers that feature Percy Heath on bass instead of Haden. The set includes great readings of Ornette's "The Blessing", "The Invisible", and "Focus On Sanity", and Coltrane plays both soprano sax and tenor! CD

A really evocative little album from Bill Frisell – and that's saying a lot, given the rest of his work! The music was all written at a ranch in Big Sur – and has this spacious, airy sort of feel – one that draws on Bill's earlier style of guitar, but also inflects it with a slight Americanist tone – in ways that echo some of Charlie Haden or Pat Metheny's projects with a similar landscape ethos. The group retains a very ethereal feel – and features Eyvind Kang on viola, Hank Roberts on cello, Jenny Scheinman on violin, and Rudy Royston on drums – on titles that include "Hawks", "Cry Alone", "Animals", "Highway 1", "Gather Good Things", "The Big One", and "Going To California". A sublime combination of strings from this unique Chicago trio – an group that features Tomeka Reid on cello, Mazz Swift on violin, and Silvia Bolognesi on bass – all coming together in modes that differ nicely from previous string trios in avant jazz! The players aren't afraid to draw on more melodic elements of their instruments when needed, but almost always offset that quality with some sharper or more experimental elements too – sometimes not in a noisy way, but just to open up their instruments to a range of very fresh possibilities – and hardly at all like any "strings" jazz you might expect! Dee Alexander sings guest vocals on the beautiful track "Not Living In Fear" – and all other selections are instrumental, with titles that include "Terrortoma", "Leaving Livorno", "Transiti", "Requiem For Charlie Haden", "Last Night's Vacation", and "Cantiere Orlando". One of the greatest Joe Henderson albums of the 70s – a suite of tracks dedicated to the four elements – and served up with some great accompaniment from Alice Coltrane! The style here is a wonderful mix of Coltrane's spirituality and Henderson's down-to-earth soulfulness – in a style that recalls some of the best moments on Coltrane's sublime Ptah The El Daoud album – a set in which Henderson's tenor was a key part. At times, Joe blows with a bit of Coltrane-like searching – but at others, he's bringing up more of a rhythmic pulse that really gives Alice a great focus – using her piano, harp, and harmonium alongside bass by Charlie Haden, violin from Michael White, and percussion from Ndugu Chancler and Baba Daru Oshu. Jarrett plays a bit of soprano sax alongside his piano, and the rest of the quartet features Dewey Redman on tenor and musette, Charlie Haden on bass, and Paul Motian on drums and percussion – all in a mode that's somewhat quieter and not as earthy as their early 70s sides together, but still filled with the great sense of interplay that made the group a noteworthy one. The album's a spectacular group effort – one that has Jarrett playing piano, percussion, and sax – in an ensemble that also includes Dewey Redman, Charlie Haden, Paul Motian, and Guilherme Franco. There's a lightly percussive sound underneath most of the tracks – spare, organic, almost earthy – as the tunes open up and flower over a long passage of time – gently stretching out in that beautiful post-Coltrane Impulse spiritual approach to jazz of the early to mid 70s. Great stuff throughout, and with 3 long tracks that include "Great Bird", "Prayer", and "Death & The Flower". CD

Wild and wonderful work by Keith Jarrett – light years away from his records on ECM! The album features a quartet that includes Dewey Redman on tenor, Charlie Haden on bass, and Paul Motian on drums – but it's clearly Keith who's driving the bus here, taking lots of odd twists and turns for playful moments that come as an unexpected surprise. One of the best of these is the short percussion track "Pre Judgement Atmosphere", which almost sounds like a Moondog number – and another is the rollingly funky "Gypsy Moth", a tune that always seems to be careening out of control, but is never "outside", just percussively grooving. Side two features two longer jamming tracks that almost have a loft jazz feel – "El Juicio" and "Piece For Ornette" – and Keith plays alone on the track "Pardon My Rags". CD

Columbia/Legacy (France), 1972. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A totally wonderful album from the young Keith Jarrett – and a set that's different than most of the pianist's other well-known modes – not his solo improvisations, not his successful trio material, and not even his more outside quartet modes of the 70s – but instead this incredible criss-crossing of sounds that really stands apart from most of his other records! The album features Keith on piano and soprano sax – an instrument he played more early on – in open, freewheeling tracks that often mix tuneful passages with more rhythmic pulsations – handled with a core group that includes Charlie Haden on bass and Paul Motian on drums, working with guitar from Sam Brown, tenor from Dewey Redman, percussion from Airto, and some larger string and brass arrangements too! Jarrett also plays electric piano at times, and the album has some of the lyricism of Treasure Island, but with a very different vibe – spun out beautifully over the space of the double-length set. Titles include "Take Me Back", "Expectations", "Vision", "Common Mama", "The Magician In You", "Sundance", "Nomads", and "Bring Back The Time When". CD

Great Impulse work from Keith Jarrett – recorded at a time when he had a lot sharper edge than later years, and was really matching the spirit of some of the post-Coltrane generation players on the label! The date's a live one, and features some relatively extended tracks – tunes that aren't exactly free, but which roll along with a very open sensibility – almost growing organically in sound from contributions by all players! Jarrett's on piano, of course – and other members of the group include Dewey Redman on tenor and Chinese Musett, Charlie Haden on bass, Paul Motian on drums, and Danny Johnson on percussion – all working wonderfully together. Dark and moody work from Keith Jarrett – a record that builds strongly off his ensemble feeling of the Impulse years, but which also seems to carry a bit more of the introspective vibe he was building up in some of his more stripped down solo recordings! The group's still a great one here – with Dewey Redman on reeds, Charlie Haden on bass, Paul Motian on drums, and Guilhermo Franco on percussion – and the tunes, although long and somewhat free, still show Jarrett's great ear for a lyrical melody – carried off wonderfully without cliche, and still with more sharp edges than you might expect. Jarrett here isn't trying to break any rules in jazz piano, nor is he trying to go out of his way to make the world known of his presence – and instead, he's got a simple, subtle approach to the keys that's filled with tenderness and gentle tones – but not in a way that's hokey or overly sentimental. There's certainly echoes here of 60s work by Steve Kuhn, and of earlier records by Vince Guaraldi – but Jarrett also hints at a bold power underneath that seems likely to break out at every turn. The album's a live recording, with Charlie Haden on bass and Paul Motian on drums – and titles include "A Moment For Tears", "Pout's Over", "My Back Pages", "Pretty Ballad", "Moving Soon", "Old Rag", and "Dedicated To You". Abbey Lincoln & Stan GetzYou Gotta Pay The Band ... CD
Verve/Gitanes, 1991. Used ... $2.99
A fantastic pairing of the vocals of Abbey Lincoln and the tenor sax of Stan Getz – one that's captured here for the very first time on record, at a point that's just a few months shy of Stan's too-early death! Both players had really grown a lot during the 80s – and the match here is wonderful – the maturing tones of Stan's tenor, and Abbey's way of doing more with less than ever before – a special sort of magic that works equally well on familiar and unfamiliar tunes! The rest of the group here is equally great – Hank Jones on piano, Charlie Haden on bass, Mark Johnson on drums, and Maxine Roach guesting on viola on two tracks too. Arrangements are by Abbey – and titles include "When I'm Called Home", "And How I Hoped For Your Love", "Time For Love", "Summer Wishes Winter Dreams", "You Made Me Funny", and "Bird Alone". Two sides of McLaughlin, both showcasing his spiritual exploratory inclination. The first side of this album features McLaughlin in a group with Billy Cobham, Airto, Charlie Haden, Dave Liebman and Jerry Goodman plus nice Indian touches from Mahalakshmi on sitar and Badal Roy on tabla. They perform two extended numbers, "Peace One" and "Peace Two", both modal free-ish excursions. Side 2 is solo guitar, or rather McLaughlin multi tracking himself, performing number of shorter pieces, like Mingus' "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat" and Miles' "Blue In Green", plus "Follow Your Heart", "Something Spiritual" and more. One of the most striking Pat Metheny albums of the period – as the set features the guitarist working with an all-star group that actually features 2 horn players! A great statement as a leader from drummer Paul Motian – a player that none would have expected to be hitting this territory in the decade before – the start of a great run of records that continued his break from more familiar rhythmic territory! The record's got a very strong ECM vibe, but also maybe a bit more bite, too – as the bass work of Charlie Haden is balanced by sharper sounds from Carlos Ward on alto sax – who really gets plenty of space to dominate the proceedings, with this open soulfulness that really adds a lot to the record. The set's also got twin guitars from Paul Metzke and Sam Brown, which makes for a great approach – especially as Brown moves between acoustic and electric. Titles include a beautiful reading of Haden's "Song For Che" – plus "Victoria", "Tuesday Ends Saturday", "War Orphans", and "Sod House". CD

Artists House/Omnivore, Late 70s/Early 80s. Used 5 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Five tremendous albums from saxophone genius Art Pepper – presented here with a lot of bonus tracks too! First up is So In Love – beautiful late work from Art Pepper – one of his albums recorded for the well-done Artist House label, and a set that's maybe got a different vibe than some of his Galaxy recordings of the time! There's a rock-solid sense of soul to the record – one that comes from the work of two different rhythm trios – one that features George Cables on piano, Charlie Haden on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums – a rhythm trio who keep things swinging, but never in a way that's too straight – pushing Art a bit around the edges, but letting him come right down the middle with some fantastic solos on alto – the other with Hank Jones on piano, Ron Carter on bass, and Al Foster on drums. Tunes are a bit shorter than on some other albums of the period, but in a great way that really lets you focus in on Pepper's amazing sound –and titles include "Diane", "Stardust", "Blues For Blanche", and "Straight No Chaser". Artworks is a nicely focused set from the great Art Pepper – a record that features a number of familiar bop and jazz themes, but set to a more open, relaxed, and very soulful style that wonderfully reflects all the greatness of Pepper in his final years! The group on the record is nicely understated, but still very hip – George Cables on piano, Charlie Haden on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums – and Art gets plenty of space to step out front and really blow these amazing solos, including one number that features just bass and drums, while Pepper blows a bit of clarinet – which we always love. All other titles feature alto sax – and titles include "Donna Lee", "Anthropology", "You Go To My Head", "Body & Soul", and "Desafinado". Next is a New York Album, but one that was oddly recorded in Burbank – and which has Art Pepper sounding very much at the top of his game! The format here is a bit like the other Artist House Pepper sessions, and those he did for the Japanese Atlas label – tight, focused, often tunes that are older jazz or bop standards – but swing with a great rhythm section, and topped with completely sublime alto solos from the leader! The quartet features Hank Jones on piano, Ron Carter on bass, and Al Foster on drums – but one number is a duo between Carter and Pepper, and another features just piano and alto. Titles include "Night In Tunisia", "Lover Man", "Duo Blues", "My Friend John", and "Straight No Chaser". Stardust is a great little record from Art Pepper – four long tracks that really have him stretching out on alto – but in a way that's maybe a bit different than some of his more burning albums on the Galaxy label at the time! The group here follows from some of the previous Artist House recordings – George Cables on piano, Charlie Haden on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums – a rhythm combo that's mighty nice – and which benefits from some great straight basswork from Haden, and Higgins' always compelling sense of rhythm! Titles include "My Friend John", "Stardust", and "Tin Tin Deo" – plus a reading of "In A Mellotone" that has Art on clarinet. CD5 features a full disc of Sessions material, titled as such – alternates, and unusual versions from the recording dates – and all other of the four CDs feature bonus material as well – different takes and alternates! There's nothing too dreamy here – as Joshua Redman takes on the energy of the Old & New Dreams that featured his father, Dewey Redman – an excellent late 70s ensemble filled with members of Ornette Coleman groups, working in a very Ornette-like mode! The style is similar here – no piano at all, and a quartet that features Ron Miles on cornet, Scott Colley on bass, and Brian Blade on drums – exploding with energy that criss-crosses the rhythmic and melodic roles of all players – which might well make for one of the liveliest Joshua Redman albums in years. Miles is wonderful in the setting, and Colley and Blade are right on the money – and titles include the originals "The Rest", "Haze & Aspirations", "New Year", "It's Not The Same", "Blues For Charlie", and "Unanimity" – plus versions of Charlie Haden's "Playing" and Ornette's "Comme Il Faut". A very wild record – maybe more free jazz than you'd guess from the image on the cover, and the Guatemala in the title! These guys are a brass band, but the way they mix their horns together often feels more like some Lester Bowie experiment, or some other AACM-related project – as folkloric modes really get changed up in a blend of cornet, baritone horn, and c melody sax – all combined with spare percussion, and an occasional touch of violin! Given the cultural currents, we might also link this one slightly to some of Charlie Haden's Liberation Music records – even though the group themselves are the authentic real deal, a funeral band from a remote mountain village. Archie SheppMama Too Tight ... CD
Impulse, 1966. Used ... $7.99
Growing brilliance from the young Archie Shepp – a record that's not just about Archie's own amazing work on the tenor, but also his keen modern vision as a leader! The combo here is an ensemble that features some of the hippest modernists of the 60s – Roswell Rudd and Grachan Moncur on trombone, Perry Robinson on clarinet, Howard Johnson on tuba, Charlie Haden on bass, and Tommy Turrentine on trumpet – making a rare non-bop appearance here, and further enforcing our already-high estimation of his talents! The style's somewhat in the "new thing" mode of the period, but it's also a bit more tightly arranged too – almost hitting Mingus-like modes for the bigger ensemble – balancing the force of the group together with very free, bold solo impulses from the players. Side one features the extended "Portrait Of Robert Thompson (As A Young Man)" – and side two features "Mama Too Tight", "Theme For Ernie", and "Basheer". CD

Alan ShorterMephistopheles To Orgasm – Revisited ... CD
Hat Art (Switzerland), 1968. New Copy ... $17.99 19.99
A great tribute to the genius of Alan Shorter – has classic late 60s album, plus a bonus track too! The core of the record is the album Orgasm, a record as striking as its title – and one of the few recorded performances of trumpeter Alan Shorter – brother of Wayne Shorter, and an equally powerful force in avant jazz in the 60s when he got a chance! And although Alan hardly recorded much, this album's a masterpiece – a set that bridges the "new thing" moment of jazz in the mid 60s with some of the freer improvisations that were taking over on both the New York and European scenes – a balance of modes that's similar to some of the Don Cherry albums for Blue Note in the late 60s, and delivered here with a stunning lineup that includes superb early modern tenor work from Gato Barbieri, bass from either Charlie Haden or Reggie Johnson, and drums from either Muhammad Ali or Rashied Ali. Tracks are all originals – and titles include "Parabola", "Straits Of Blagellan", "Outeroids", and "Orgasm". CD also features another key performance by Alan Shorter from a few years earlier – the track "Mephistopheles" from the Wayne Shorter album All Seeing Eye – with Wayne on tenor, James Spaulding on alto, Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Grachan Moncur III on trombone, and Herbie Hancock on piano. ✨✧ Masayuki TakayanagiLonely Woman ... CD
Three Blind Mice/Craftman (Japan), 1982. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A pretty darn beautiful album of solo guitar tracks – recorded in 1982 by Japanese musician Masayuki Takayanagi, and featuring only electric guitar, played with a spare raspy edge – recorded in a rough style that's quite unusual for a Japanese jazz session of the time! However, it's this style of recording that really brings out the best of the album – as the complicated stylings of Takayanagi ring out with a much more honest sound than you'd expect on an album of this nature – reminding us more of earlier work by Lee Konitz collaborator Billy Bauer than most of the late 70s guitar heroes from Japan! The sound is beautiful throughout – and titles include a version of Charlie Haden's "Song For Che", a reading of Lennie Tristano's "Lennie's Pennies", and a great version of Ornette's "Lonely Woman". ✨✧ Cecil TaylorMusic From Two Continents – Live At Jazz Jamboree 84 ... CD
Listen Foundation (Poland), 1984. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of the most ambitious Cecil Taylor projects of the 80s – a special project performed by a large ensemble at a jazz festival in Poland – an incredible group who really expand the vision in Cecil's music! Make no mistake, Taylor is definitely the leader here – his piano and vocalizations really direct the entire set – but the music brims over with contributions from giants who include Tomasz Stanko and Enrico Rava on trumpets, Conrad Bauer on trombone, Jimmy Lyons on alto, Frank Wright and John Tchicai on tenors, Gunter Hampel on bass clarinet and vibes, and William Parker on bass. The performance features one long piece, but graced with all these really beautiful themes amidst the freer improvisations – coming across with a global vision in jazz that's maybe not unlike some of Charlie Haden's Liberation Music projects, but freer and bolder overall! Private, 1994. Used ... Out Of Stock
A great later jazz set from Toots Thielemans – recorded half in New York and half in LA – as you might guess from the title! The sound is still very much Toots' own, though – no easy nods to styles from either city in earlier years – and despite the fact that the record is on the Private Music label, which could sometimes put out snoozy new age, it's definitely a jazz date through and through – with relatively stripped down small combo instrumentation on all numbers. Players include John Scofield on guitar, Christian Mc Bride and Charlie Haden on bass, Mike Maineri on vibes, Terence Blanchard on trumpet, Lyle Mays on piano, and Peter Erskine on drums – and tracks include "In Walked Bud", "Con Alma", "Groovin High", "In Your Own Sweet Way", "Giant Steps", "Waltz For Debby", "A Child Is Born", and "Take Five". ✨✧ Denny ZeitlinCathexis/Carnival ... CD
Columbia/Collectables, 1964. Used ... Out Of Stock
Very hip piano trio work – the first 2 Columbia albums by Denny Zeitlin, a young fresh talent in the 60s, with an approach that was lyrical, slightly modern, and a bit soulful. This is especially the case on the Cathexis album, which features a great rhythm section of Cecil McBee on bass and Freddy Waits on drums. Carnival is a bit more free flowing – with Charlie Haden doing some great bass, making a rare small group appearance here. Most tunes are originals by Zeitlin – and titles include "Stonehenge", "Cathexis", "Repeat", "I Thou", "After The War", "Carnival", and "Carole's Garden". CD

Mosaic, 1964/1966/1967. Used 3 CDs ... Out Of Stock
The complete Columbia Records studio sessions from pianist Denny Zeitlin – and a package that features a fair bit of unreleased material too – not just alternate takes, but loads of fresh new tunes recorded at the time – appearing here for the first time ever! Zeitlin's a hell of a pianist, especially during these years – a really fresh 60s talent who works with a sound that's both warmly lyrical and somewhat modern – stylistically rooted in Bill Evans' inspiration, but clearly his own man by the time of these recordings! Denny's never fully gotten his due, and reissues over the years have been spare – so this package is not only a much-needed look as his mighty talents, but also a key discovery of 12 previously unreleased numbers. Players include Charlie Haden, Cecil McBee, and Joe Halpin on bass – and Freddie Waits, Oliver Johnson, and Jerry Granelli on drums. Titles include "Blue Phoenix", "Spring Is Here", "Western Thing", "Slipstream", "Later", "Labyrinth", "The Journey Home", "Carole's Garden", "Skippying", "Carnival", "Dormammu", "Living Alone", "Night & Day", "Maiden Voyage", "Nica's Tempo", "Cathexis", and "Repeat". ✨✧ Torbjorn Zetterberg & The Great QuestionTorbjorn Zetterberg & The Great Question – Live ... CD
Corbett vs. Dempsey, 2019. New Copy Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
An insanely wonderful album from bassist Torbjorn Zetterberg – a player we've loved for many years, but who seems to be hitting a new level of genius with this record! As with other key bassist-driven ensembles over the years – like the work of Charles Mingus, or more appropriately, the Liberation Music Orchestra of Charlie Haden – Zetterberg has this way of driving the group from the bass position with a vivid, fluid sort of energy – never overstating his own role, and getting this wonderfully dynamic performances out of the other members – so that although the group's just a sextet, it feels as if it's got a lot more parts in motion. The lineup is as tremendous as Torbjorn's leadership – Susana Santos Silva on trumpet, Mats Aleklint on trombone, Jonas Kullhammar on tenor and flute, Alberto Pinton on baritone and flute, and Jon Falt on drums – working beautifully through long Zetterberg originals. titles include "Cherry Tree Carol/Weekday Miracles", "The Oracle In Finnaker", "Tiny Slippers", and "Song From The End Of The World". VariousDIW – Disk In The World – Compiled By Jun Numata ... CD
DIW (Japan), Late 80s/Early 90s. New Copy ... $22.99 26.99
The cover looks a bit punk rock, but the music here is all jazz – pulled from the great catalog of DIW Records – the groundbreaking imprint of Japan's Disk Union record stores! Back at the end of the 80s, the company really started to put its money where its heart was – and launched a series of recordings of artists who weren't getting their fair shake in the studio, or the sort of freedoms that DIW was allowing them! The label's approach often allowed for unique combinations, or different expressions than some of the more familiar work of some of their artists – which made for a stretch when we were joyously awaiting each new DIW release, and the sorts of surprises they would bring. This package is a well-selected batch of classics, with a strong focus on the label's commitment to the New York avant scene – all newly remastered – with titles that include "Tahah" by John Zorn Masada, "Burning Like Love" by James Blood Ulmer, "Kush" by Art Ensemble Of Chicago, "Autumn Leaves" by David S Ware, "Anaba Aozo" by Ayibobo featuring Jean-Paul Bourelly, "Deep River" by David Murray, "Spiritual" by Charlie Haden Liberation Music Orchestra, and "In Time" by Music Revelation Ensemble.
