✨✧ Lou DonaldsonScorpion – Live At The Cadillac Club ... CD
Blue Note, 1970. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Rare work from funky Lou – unreleased for years! This is an excellent live set that was recorded in 1970, when Lou was at the height of his Blue Note powers, and working with a group that included Idris Muhammad (drums), Melvin Sparks (guitar), and Leon Spencer (organ). Recorded live at the Cadillac Club in Newark, New Jersey, this set's a perfect document of what a funky lounge gig was like in the era of the organ/tenor combos. The group swings hard and funky, with a sound that's like their best Blue Note recordings, and the track list includes "Peepin", "The Scorpion", "Alligator Boogaloo", and "Footpattin' Time". CD
(Out of print Rare Groove pressing.)

✨✧ Pierre DorgeSoundscapes ... CD
Steeplechase (Denmark), 2018. Used ... Out Of Stock
Guitarist Pierre Dorge has been giving us amazing music for many years – but he sounds especially amazing here in the company of a really great group – the excellent Kirk Knuffke on cornet, plus Stephen Riley on tenor, Conrad Herwig on trombone, Jay Anderson on bass, and Adam Nussbaum on drums – all very dynamic players who seem to make Dorge sound even fresher than ever! There's an especially strong sense of phrasing on the record – no surprise, especially with Knuffke in the mix – and while Pierre can sometimes use his instrument in more abstract ways, that quality is really balanced by all the other members of the lineup. Anderson's bass is great – nicely pointed at the best moments, and a great contrast to Dorge's strings – and all tracks are originals, with titles that include "Lullaby For Sun Ra", "Mingus' Birthday Party", "Afrikaa Mbizo Dyani", "Sim Sim Ba", and "Alligator In Paradise". ✨✧ Dizzy GillespieReal Thing ... LP
Perception, 1970. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Stunning funk from the great Dizzy Gillespie – light years away from his early bop recordings! The album's a slammin batch of 70s instrumentals – Dizzy's trumpet firmly in the lead over electric backings that have more than a bit of funk in them – a bit like his Soul Salvation record, and but slightly more open overall – with a groovy vibe throughout! The bass is the main driving factor of the tunes – played either by Phil Upchurch or Chuck Rainey – and the tracks bounce along with a fierce and righteous groove that also includes hard riffing on guitar and some sweet piano lines. Players include Mike Longo, James Moody, and Bernard Purdie – and tracks include "N'Bani", "Matrix", "Soul Kiss", "Ding A Ling", and "Alligator". Great stuff, and a crucial album in Dizzy's lost career! Damn funky, too. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Fumio ItabashiTOH ... LP
Frasco/Universal (Japan), 1976. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Sublime 70s work from pianist Fumio Itabashi, easily one of our favorite Japanese talents of the time – a pianist with a wonderful sense of rhythm and freedom at the same time – very much on display on this beautiful record! The tracks are long and flowing – full of feeling, and as lyrical at times as they are rhythmic – set up with perfect trio accompaniment that features Tsutomu Okada on bass and Takuji Kusimoto on drums – working with Fumio in this special sort of magic that's a bit hard to put in words, but which really demonstrates on record why this moment in Japanese jazz was such a special time! Ties include "TOH", "Alligator Dance", and "Goodbye". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Takeo Moriyama & Fumio ItabashiStraightedge – Live At Pit Inn ... CD
Pit Inn (Japan), 2014. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A really hard-burning live set, and one that's led by two giants of the Japanese jazz scene – drummer Takeo Moriyama and pianist Fumio Tabashi – both of whom work here with an edge that's maybe even bolder than some of their music from back in the day! Part of the album's boldness comes from the work of Tetsuro Kawashima on tenor and Shinpei Ruike on trumpet – both players we don't know at all, but who can really set a fire with their solos at all the right moments – opening up the extended tracks with a heck of a lot of righteous power. The group also has strong basswork from Shinichi Kato, another younger player – and titles include "Watarase", "Sunrise", "Goodbye", "Alligator Dance", and "Ganbane Tohoku No 2". CD
