Ok, we'll be honest in saying that we don't know what "Starbust Forever" is supposed to mean – but that's what's on the cover, and the music on the disc is so nice we're not going to complain! The album's a unique later session for French saxophone giant Barney Wilen – a record that has him working with a larger than usual group that includes keyboards as well as piano, plus additional percussion, and a bit of guitar. The tunes are a good mix of well chosen standards, and they're done in a style that opens them up with some interesting rhythms – fresh grooves that allow Wilen to blow strong solos on tenor, soprano, and alto, showing that he's still got a heck of a lot of soul at this later stage! Titles include "Stardust", "Darn That Dream", "Wave", "Espinhos Do Ser", "Recado", "Angelica", and "Forever". CD
Fantastic work from piano legend Bill Evans – recorded at the Keystone club in San Francisco just a week before his too-early death – and a batch of material that shows us that Bill still had plenty to offer the world! This isn't the work of a musician on his last legs – and instead, Evans is a master of imagination, phrasing, and timing – working with his superb late trio that features Marc Johnson on bass and Joe Labarbera on drums – and further opening up tunes we've already heard him open up before – leaving us breathless all over again, at that level that makes Bill Evans live material maybe even more important to understanding his genius than his studio material! Tommy Flanagan —
Jazz Poet ... CD Alfa/Compose, 1989. Used ...
Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great title for this one – given the extremely poetic sound of Tommy Flanagan on the piano! For years, Tommy's had a great talent for being as bopper, yet as sensitive as a mellower, more lyrical player too – a brilliant combination that shows up instantly in the first few notes of this set – a late 80s recording that's filled with warmth and subtle imagination. The trio features George Mraz on bass and Kenny Washington on drums – the latter of whom really gets things swinging in some great gentle ways – and titles include "Raincheck", "Lament", "Caravan", "Voce Abuso", "Mean Streets", and "That Tired Routine Called Love". CD
A later version of the Great Jazz Trio – still with Hank Jones on piano, but alongside Mads Vinding on bass and Billy Hart on drums – all bringing that mature Jones magic to a well-chosen batch of standards! CD

Mal Waldron's got no more tears for Lady Day – but maybe that's because so many of the pianist's previous albums evoked his relationship with Billie Holiday! Shedding that reference, just focus on the strength of Waldron in a trio setting – that mature, moody style that really showed how much Mal had grown during his 60s and 70s years recording abroad, then able to bring back that energy to a range of records that gave him greater exposure during this excellent 80s stretch! All the sensitivity of Waldron's early years is in place, and there's clearly an understanding of the out territory he explored in more recent years – but focused with careful energy in this trio that features Paulo Cardoso on bass and John Betsch on drums. Titles include "Melancholy Waltz", "No More Tears", "Alone Together", "All Night Through", and "Yesterdays". CD

American trio work from piansit Toshiko Akiyoshi – recorded in LA with two different groups – one with Bob Dauherty on bass and Jimmy Smith on drums, the other with Andrew Simpkins on bass and Peter Donald on drums! Toshiko produced the set herself, and the choice of bassists is especially nice – on tunes that include Oscar Pettiford's "Swinging Till The Girls Come Home", Miles Davis' "Solar", and versions of "Two Bass Hit", "Israel", "In Your Own Sweet Way", and "Tempus Fugit". Amazing music from Chris McGregor and his legendary Brotherhood Of Breath ensemble – easily one of the most exciting forces in British jazz in the 70s, and one fo the few who was still sounding their best in the latter half of the decade! McGregor's got as much bite and burn here as with his famous earlier combo, The Blue Notes – and the lineup here boasts ex-members of that group – Dudu Pukwana on alto, Johnny Dyani on bass, and Louis Moholo on drums – all joining together perfectly with McGregor's long-spun piano lines. The ensemble also features other key British players – Mike Osborne on alto, Evan Parker on tenor, Harry Beckett and Mark Charig on trumpets, and Radu Malfatti on trombone – creating this bold horn section that stretches to the skies on waves of soul! Two lengthy pieces "Sunrise On The Sun" and "Kwaholo" bookend the shorter piece "Sonia". CD features three more tracks not on the original album – "TBS", "Andromeda", and "You Ain't Gonna Know Me Cos You Think You Know Me". CD
