First LP by this groundbreaking ensemble from Chicago, led by AACM reed player Ed Wilkerson, and featuring Aaron Dodd, Mwata Bowden, and Robert Griffin Jr. The group plays with a style that meshes Mingus-like small group writing with playing styles that fall within an AACM tradition. 8 Bold Souls have been one of the most consistent (and compelling!) jazz units working in Chicago over the past 20 years – and thanks to the notable leadership of reed player Ed Wilkerson, the group has continued to grow and flourish, bridging a gap between an older AACM south side tradition, and the younger underground players on the north side. No surprise, then, that this album came out on the indie/post-rock stronghold Thrill Jockey – but don't let that put you off if you're a real jazz fan, because Wilkerson's vision is clearer and purer than ever, and the set bristles with excitement through a batch of sparkling original compositions written in a vaguely Mingus-y style. Titles include "Pachinko", "Gang Of Four", "Brown Town", and "Odyssey". CD

A tremendous step forward for the young Muhal Richard Abrams – a set that still shows his early roots in the AACM, but which also blossoms with some of his more serious compositional efforts to come! There's a sensitivity here that really stands out – even among Abrams' contemporaries – a striving for a wider range of expression – some as bold as before, some much more deeply personal and intimate. The tracks feature a shifting array of players – working alongside Abrams piano, and building up the sound in a number of different ways. Players include Wallace McMillan on flute and sax, Edwin Daugherty on sax, Richard Brown on sax, Emanuel Cranshaw on vibes, Rufus Reid on bass, and Steve McCall and Wilbur Campbell on drums. Ella Jackson provides vocals on "How Are You?" – and other titles include "Ballad For New Souls", "Things To Come From Those Now Gone", "In Retrospect", "Ballad For Old Souls", "1 & 4 Plus 2 & 7", and "March Of The Transients". Luke Stewart is the bassist and the composer here – but the quintet is a powerhouse at every level – with reed work from Ken Vandermark and Ed Wilkerson, piano from Jim Baker, and drums from Avreeayl Ra – a lineup who do tremendous things with Luke's music! The tracks are all long, and build beautifully in a mixture of core ideas and individual improvisations – with a quality that almost evokes Wilkerson's important work in 8 Bold Souls, but an execution that's more flowingly spiritual overall – a richness in Stewart's music that brings out very different qualities in both Ed and Ken. The whole thing's great – the kind of record that will really establish Stewart as a musician to listen for in years to come – and titles include "The Scene", "Harp & Concrete Silhouette", "Awakening The Masters", and "Brown & Gray". The Heads Of State are a very heady quartet – an all-star group that features Gary Bartz on alto, Larry Willis on piano, Buster Williams on bass, and Al Foster on drums – about as great of a lineup as we might hope for! The setting is one that seems to have Bartz very strongly out in the lead – handling his alto almost with the depth of a tenor, at a level that takes us back to some of those great 90s sessions that had him really getting back to basics – honing his solo skills in very different ways than his bigger dates of the 70s – starting a maturation process that's still going on strongly with records like this. Willis is a delight, too – very sensitive at the right moments, but boldly modal at others – and a perfect fit for the round, warm tones of Buster Williams – and the always-tight timing of Al Foster. Titles include the Bartz originals "Uncle Bubba" and "Soulstice" – plus takes on "Impressions", "Capuchin Swing", "Summer Serenade", "Lotous Blossom", and "Search For Peace". CD
