Sun RaLive In Nickelsdorf 1984 (4LP set) ... LP
Trost (Austria), 1984. New Copy 4LP ... $64.99 69.99
A really wonderful under-discovered performance by Sun Ra & The Arkestra – a complete live set from 1984, presented here with really stunning fidelity! The package is a great antidote to some of the fuzzier Ra live sets on the market – as it's got the care that the Trost label has brought to their reissues of material by Peter Brotzmann and the FMP generation – with sound that's more than sensitive enough to capture some surprisingly great spare piano passages, as well as the full force of the Arkestra when they really get going. Sun Ra is still a tremendous force on the keys at this time – and delivers a lot of solos that are interspersed between larger, more structured songs – played with fire by a lineup that includes John Gilmore on tenor and clarinet, Marshall Allen on alto and flute, James Jackson on bassoon and infinity drum, and Danny Ray Thompson on baritone and flute. Titles include a number of "untitled improvisation" tracks – plus "Big John's Special", "Days Of Wine & Roses", "What's New", "Nuclear War", "East Of The Sun", "Yeah Man", "Mack The Knife", "Day Dream", and "Love In Outer Space". This great 4LP box set includes an insert card with notes and photos. Beautiful! LP, Vinyl record album

Patrice RushenRemind Me – The Classic Elektra Recordings 1978 to 1984 (3LP set) ... LP
Elektra/Strut (UK), Late 1970s/Early 1980s. New Copy 3LP ... $33.99 35.99
Stunning work from the great second chapter of Patrice Rushen – the time when the lady moved over to Elektra Records and really opened up her groove! Rushen had already been making great music for most of the 70s – playing fantastic keyboards as a real up-and-coming star on the funky fusion scene of the west coast – but at Elektra, she also turned into a surprisingly strong singer – and mixed her voice with her keyboards in a really wonderful sound! This is mainstream soul of the hippest level – as the core of the cuts are almost always rooted in jazzy fusion, which also means that the vocals give way to sweet keyboard solos too – beautifully balanced in a way that show off all of the sweetest charms of the great Patrice Rushen – these qualities that really set her apart from most of her generation. This package is filled with really well-chosen cuts, and also includes some great single mixes and other versions too – titles that include "When I Found You", "Forget Me Nots (12" mix)", "Music Of The Earth", "Haven't You Heard (12" mix)", "Let's Sing A Song Of Love", "Feels So Real (12" mix)", "Settle For My Love", "Remind Me", "All We Need", "Never Gonna Give You Up (long version)", "Look up (long version)", "Number One (12" version)", "Where There Is Love", and "To Each His Own". BBE (UK), Late 60s/1970s/Early 80s. New Copy 3LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Mindblowing jazz from Japan – a tremendous introduction to the 70s scene in Tokyo if you've never heard this music at all – and a package that also includes a fair bit of rare tracks, even if you're not a newcomer! The Japanese love of American jazz is no secret – and the music was spread widely there by American forces after WWII – but during the 70s, something really special happened, and the scene found a voice that was all its own – exploding with new energy to create sounds that were soulful, spiritual, and powerfully poetic! By the end of the 70s, Japanese fusion would get more global exposure – but most of the tracks here are acoustic, save for Fender Rhodes lines – and feature completely inventive, imaginative sounds – often set to grooves that are modal and spiritual too. A fantastic collection throughout – with tracks that include "Blind Man" by Shintaro Quintet, "White Fire" by Takao Uematsu, "Aya's Samba" by Eiji Nakayama, "Earth Mother" by Koichi Matsukaze, "Dead Letter" by Tohru Aizawa, "Kaze" by Takeo Moriyama, "Long Neal" by Kiyoshi Sugimoto, "Unknown Point" by Mitsuaki Katayama, and "Little Island" by Fumio Karashima. 3LP set features bonus tracks – "Sea Breeze" by George Otsuka and "Ode To Workman" by Terumasa Hino and Reggie Workman. Chet Baker with Warne MarshBlues For A Reason (180 gram pressing – with bonus track) ... LP
Criss Cross/Anagram, 1984. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $23.99 25.99
A real standout set in the later years of trumpet legend Chet Baker – in part because the record features some wonderful tenor work from the equally legendary Warne Marsh! Marsh at this point in his career has really developed a subtle edge – this slight current of darkness that wasn't there at the start, and which works well next to the moody qualities that Baker developed in his final years too. Equally wonderful is the piano of Hod O'Brien – a great and overlooked musician, and one who has this almost broken-down quality that really fits the emotive energy of the date. Other players include Eddie Gladden on drums and Cecil McBee on bass – the latter of whom is a bit of a surprise on such a session – on titles that include "Imagination", "We Know It's Love", "Well Spoken", "Blues For A reason", and "Looking Good Tonight". Features a great bonus track – an alternate of "Looking Good Tonight", on vinyl for the first time! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Willem Breuker KollektiefWillem Breuker Kollektief ... LP
About Time, 1984. Sealed ... $14.99
American greatness from this seminal Dutch ensemble – a set recorded in the US when the group were really hitting on all burners – linking together rich strains of modern jazz in the course of a single performance! There's a great blend of tight concepts and freer solos going on here – and reedman Breuker is still very might at his most inventive – playing with a rich, feeling sort of tone, and moving through lots of new ideas – and never falling into some of the easier or more gimmicky modes that might normally hamper a project like this. Other musicians include Andre Goudbeek on alto, Maarten Van Norden on tenor, Andy Altenfelder and Boy Raaymakers on trumpet, and Bernard Hunnekink on trombone – and titles include "Women's Voting Rights", "Sylvia's Proposal", "Benares", "Kontrafunkt", "Song Of Mandalay", and "Amsterdam Rhapsody Overture". LP, Vinyl record album
(Later pressing with label logo at the bottom left, still sealed, with price sticker remnants. Shrinkwrap is mostly cracked at the opening, intact at the center, and some small holes in the bottom seam. Cover has some wear where exposed.)

Stanley ClarkeTime Exposure ... LP
Epic, 1984. Near Mint- ... $9.99
A nice funky electric groover from Stanley Clarke's mid 80s R&B years! Time Exposure has a lot of period electro funk in the mix, particularly Clarke's impeccable bass lines, which are heavy throughout! A brilliant mix of 80s fusiony future funk with jazz precision – definitely a funky highlight from this period in Clarke's career – and those bass lines are just unreal! A pretty eclectic roster of guest musicians play on this one, including tenor sax player Ernie Watts, fellow bassist Louis Johnson of Brothers Johnson, singer Howard Hewitt and rock guitar guru Jeff Beck. Titles include "Play The Bass 10", "Are You Ready (For The Future)", "Heaven Sent You", "Time Exposure", "Speedball", "Future Shock", "Spacerunner", "I Know Just How You Feel" and more. Miles DavisDecoy ... LP
Columbia, 1984. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $9.99
The decoy here might be in the rhythms, which are often electric, but still played live – handled by Robert Irving III on many tracks, with a cool 80s fusion sound that's mighty nice! The style of the album's a nice change from the Miles groove of the 70s – a bit leaner, with almost a Weather Report influence at times, but far less jamming – and still prone to the darker tones that always make Davis' music of these later years surprisingly good. Al Foster handles acoustic drums on some tracks, and other players include Bill Evans on soprano sax and Mino Cinelu on percussion – on titles that include "Decoy", "Robot 415", "Code MD", "Freaky Deaky", "What It Is", "That's Right", and "That's What Happened". Dave GrusinNight-Lines ... LP
GRP, 1984. Very Good+ ... $4.99
A record that has Dave Grusin elevating a bit more into the jazz/soul mainstream – as the set has the keyboardist working with a few more crossover modes than before, but all in a way that seems to demonstrate his many years in various kinds of music! The album was a key entry in the new sound of fusion during the mid 80s – maybe a bit sharper than later smooth jazz, but with efforts from some leading lights of that generation to come – including David Sanborn and Marcus Miller. Phoebe Snow sings a bit on the record – which might provide her with one of her more exciting settings in years – and titles include "Power Wave", "Thankful N Thoughtful", "Night Lines", "Tick Tock", "Bossa Baroque", and "Secret Place". Jazz Doctors (Billy Bang/Frank Lowe)Intensive Care ... LP
Cadillac (UK), 1984. New Copy (reissue)... $26.99 32.99
Forget the hokey pun in the title, as the album's a sharp-edged set that has way more going on than that bad wit might imply – a brilliant record that has the same sort of post-loft vibe as some of the best Black Saint/Soul Note sessions from the time! The group here features players who worked on many of those records too – the mighty Billy Bang on violin, sounding incredible, and so different than generations of others touching that instrument in jazz – sharp, soulful, and almost "blown" more like a saxophone! Frank Lowe's tenor follows with a similarly bold voice – and the group features very urgent work on bass from Rafael Garrett and drums from Dennis Charles. Titles include great readings of Jackie McLean's "Little Melonae" and Ornette Coleman's "Lonely Woman" – plus the tracks "Loweology", "Ballad With One L", and "Blood On The Cross". Soul Note (Italy), 1984. New Copy (reissue)... $25.99 29.99 About April 19, 2024 (delayed)
Deeply soulful blowing from tenorist Frank Lowe – working here in a wonderfully hip group that includes Don Cherry on pocket trumpet, Grachan Moncur III on trombone, Geri Allen on piano, Charnett Moffett on bass, and Charles Moffett on drums. The date really lives up to the promise you might expect from the players listed – and has a really classic, deep-rooted sound that makes the album feel like some lost avant set from a decade before – very well-crafted and thoughtful, with a great balance between focus and freedom. Lowe wrote most of the songs – and titles include "Decision In Paradise", "Cherryco", "I'll Whistle Your Name", "Lowe-ologie", "You Dig", and "Dues & Don'ts". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Jackie McLeanTippin' The Scales ... LP
Blue Note, 1962/1984. Near Mint- ... $16.99
A wonderful quartet session from the young alto genius Jackie McLean – recorded for Blue Note in the 60s, but not issued until many years later! That issue doesn't stop the set from being a classic killer, though – as the group features the stunning Sonny Clark on piano, still very much at the top of his powers, and a perfect match here for the sharp edges and new ideas of Jackie's horn – still very much in a hardbop mode, but with some of the edgier modernism that would burst forth in his "new thing" years. The rest of the group features Butch Warren on bass and Art Taylor on drums – both superb players – and titles include "Two For One", "Nicely", "Rainy Blues", and "Tippin The Scales". Lee MorganRajah (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Blue Note, 1966/1984. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $36.99 38.99
One of our favorite albums ever from the legendary trumpeter Lee Morgan – a set that Blue Note recorded in the mid 60s, but didn't show the world until almost two decades later! The album's got Lee as his lyrical best – working almost with a sense of exoticism, especially on the wonderful leadoff track – which is this loping take on Cal Massey's lesser-known composition "Pilgrim's Funny Farm" – blocked out into bold solos from Lee, plus Hank Mobley on tenor and Cedar Walton on piano! You can really hear Walton's influence on the record – that mix of flow and lyricism that he was hitting at the time – and drummer Billy Higgins also brings a lot to the record, too – creating these shifting rhythms that really move past the standard hardbop modes of a few years before. In addition to "Pilgrim's Funny Farm", the album also includes the tracks "The Rajah" and "Is That So" – and the whole thing's wonderful all the way through! LP, Vinyl record album

Black Saint (Italy), 1984. Near Mint- ... $13.99
One of David Murray's straighter sides from the early 80s – and exactly the kind of record to prove to the world that he could be a strong tenor traditionalist while still bringing an inventive sound to play! Murray's tone is deep and soulful, and often quite lyrical – set nicely in a quartet that features warm piano from John Hicks, bass from Reggie Workman, and drums from Ed Blackwell. The Workman/Blackwell component ensure that things still have an edge at times, even when swinging – and the tunes are a mix of Murray originals and a few standards. Titles include "Morning Song", "Light Blue Frolic", "Off Season", "Duet", "Body and Soul", and "Jitterbug Waltz". LP, Vinyl record album

Soaring piano lines, burning trumpet solos, and soulful tenor sax – all wrapped together beautifully in this obscure Japanese session from the 80s – a date that has all the free-thinking power and unbounded energy of some of our favorite American soul jazz sessions from a decade before! The group's led by bassist Shintaro Nakamura, but features wonderful contributions from trumpeter Shunzo Ohno, tenorist Robert Kenmotsu, and pianist Jeff Jenkins – all of whom get plenty of space to state their case on the album's long and stretched-out tracks. The bass of Nakamura and piano of Jenkins sets up a good modal groove on most numbers – and titles include "Future On You", "Don't Forget Me", "Sweet & Sour Sound", "Evolution", and "A Blind Man". Tatsuya NakamuraLocus ... LP
Sea Horse/BBE (UK), 1984. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $34.99 39.99
A set with a warm cover image and a fair bit of electric instrumentation – yet a record that's also got much more of an edge than you might expect! Drummer Tatsuya Nakamura leads a group through territory that's partly fusion, but which also borrows some looser, darker modes from the farther side of the spectrum – not totally in Miles Davis 70s electric modes, but certainly shaped by the knowledge of the territory he opened up on his long double-length albums, which is then brought back into more compact song formation that changes nicely throughout the set! Other players on the record include Jun Fukamichi on keyboards, Kazumasa Akiyama on guitar, and Shinobu Fujimoto on trumpet – and there's also some nice use of percussion next to Tatsuya's work on drums. Titles include the improvised "Ballad", plus "Locus", "Wow", and "1/4 Samba". LP, Vinyl record album

Supersax & LA VoicesSupersax & LA Voices Vol 2 ... LP
Columbia, 1984. Near Mint- ... $3.99
A fantastic shift in the sound of the Supersax ensemble – one that has the group's jazzy instrumentation mixed with a vocal chorus – in a way that's a bit similar to some of the best Singers Unlimited albums for MPS in the 70s! The title, cover, and group's name might make you think the whole thing's a bit cheesy – but it's not, and the presentation is wonderful – thanks to strong work on saxes from west coast legends like Med Flory, Lanny Morgan, Jay Miglori, and Jack Nimitz – plus work from other group members who include Conte Candoli on trumpet, Lou Levy on piano, and Monty Budwig on bass – all strong LA jazz musicians with a legacy that goes back to the 50s! The vocal group's a quartet, with the lovely Sue Raney in the lead – a singer that we loved on her 50s and 60s recordings for Capitol, and who here re-emerges with a new sophisticated vibe that's wonderful. Titles include "He Ain't Got Rhythm", "Skylark", "Speak Low", "They Can't Take That Away From Me", "Bloomdido", and the Med Flory composed "Out The Window" and "Bossa No No". LP, Vinyl record album

Enja, 1984. Sealed ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An unusual date from tenorist George Adams – recorded right around the same time as his legendary records with Don Pullen, but instead a more unusual partnership with the great trumpeter Hannibal Marvin Peterson! The pairing is great – and both hornmen soar out and really get plenty of room to do their thing – in a mixture of hardbop energy and more spiritual currents, with help from John Scofield on guitar, Ron Burton on piano, Walter Schmocker on bass, and Allen Nelson on drums. The energy is maybe a bit more like some of Peterson's late 70s records than some of the Adams/Pullen material – and that quality makes the live date a nice standout in the catalog of both players. As always with the Jazz Messengers, the group's filled with up-and-coming jazz talents that really make the record great – trumpet from Terence Blanchard, tenor from Jean Toussaint, alto from Donald Harrison, piano from Mulgrew Miller, and bass from Lonnie Plaxico – all players who leave their own imprint strongly on the record, yet still fall into line with the core groove supplied by Blakey's drums. A pretty darn great set that captures bits from all of Stan Getz's bossa nova recordings for Verve! Easy to find on CD – but darn tough to find on vinyl! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Ronald LangestraatSearching ... LP
South Of North (Netherlands), 1984. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Homegrown grooves, but with a wonderfully soulful vibe – music recorded in the mid 80s by Dutch jazz legend Ronald Langestraat, but in a way that's different than his projects with larger groups at the time! The record's got plenty of the funk and soul that Ronald was hitting with those acts – but is delivered with a leaner quality, as Langestraat captured this music at home on a four track recorder – with acoustic piano, Fender Rhodes, Farfisa organ, tenor, alto, and other instruments – all topped with some of his dreamily light vocals too! The approach is completely charming – somewhere between jazz funk and soul, but also very much its own thing too – on titles that include "Gotta Get Away", "Pandora's Box", "You Need To Cry", "I'm Ready For Dancing", "Girl Where Are You", "Then & Forever", and "In The Middle Of The Night". ✨✧ Ramsey Lewis & Nancy WilsonTwo Of Us ... LP
Columbia, 1984. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Ramsey Lewis and Nancy Wilson – two key soulful talents from the 60s, working together beautifully here in a mid 80s set! The album's almost more Randy's than it is Nancy's given that Lewis takes a few tunes instrumentally, working in a blend of acoustic and electric instrumentation that's very much in his best early 80s Columbia Records mode. But things really come together when Nancy joins in – bringing her mature, soulful approach to the tunes – and really tying them together wonderfully with her vocals! Stanley Clarke produced, and there's definitely some echoes here of his own music of the time – and titles include "Ram", "Quiet Storm", "Never Wanna Say Goodnight", "Closer Than Close", and "Breaker Beat". ✨✧ Monika LingesSonging ... LP
Nabel (Germany), 1984. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Great stuff by the wonderful Monika Linges – a name that will get you in trouble if you say it too fast! The set's got a warmly acoustic glow throughout – an approach that shakes off the keyboards of some of Linges' previous music, but brings in some great acoustic piano lines that really make the record sparkle with soul. Monika's vocals are as great as ever – soaring and breezy, but with a good degree of feeling too – and although the record's only got backing by a piano trio, there's a really dynamic feel going on – one that's somewhere in a space between Kalima and Elizabeth Shepherd. Tracks include "Waiting", "Courage", "Coldness", "Samba De Coracao", "Meeting", and "Song of Changes". (Vocalists, Jazz) LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Pat MethenyFirst Circle ... LP
ECM, 1984. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Arguably the last great album to come from the classic Pat Metheny collaboration with Lyle Mays – a record that's tightened up considerably from some of the group's earlier efforts, but which gives as its reward some wonderfully compelling tunes! Pat's still very much influenced here by a Brazilian fusion style – but he takes that approach, dismantles it, pulls out the best elements – and extrapolates them into a sound that's uniquely his own. Wordless vocals slide out on a few numbers, while guitar and keys sing alongside earthier percussion – in a style that's extremely evocative, and shows that even riding the top of his own success, Metheny was still more than willing to bring in new modes. Titles include "If I Could", "Forward March", "Yolanda, You Learn", "End Of The Game", and "Mas Alla". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Stanley TurrentineStraight Ahead ... LP
Blue Note, 1984. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
One of the big stars of Blue Note Records in the 60s, still sounding great here on the revived version of the label in the 80s! Stan's look on the cover may be a bit Cosby Show, but his sound on the tenor is mighty classic throughout – backed by Hammond from Jimmy Smith on most cuts, and Fender Rhodes from Les McCann on a few others – and always set up in a lean small combo mode that really gets away from some of the too-smooth Turrentine albums from just a few years before. Tracks are longish, and a great reminder that Stan's still a hell of a great voice on his instrument – and other players on the set include both Jimmy Ponder and George Benson on guitar, and Ron Carter on bass. Titles include "Plum", "A Child Is Born", "Ah Rio", "The Longer You Wait", and "Straight Ahead". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Chet Baker with Warne MarshBlues For A Reason ... LP
Criss Cross (Holland), 1984. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
✨✧ Arnett CobbKeep On Pushin ... LP
Beehive, 1984. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A rare later date from tenor giant Arnett Cobb – and one of the few to match the groove of his Prestige Records sessions! There's an easygoing groove here that takes us back to the brilliantly understated soul of Cobb's Party Time Records – as the set's got a similar laidback rhythm vibe – with piano from Junior Mance, bass from George Duvivier, and drums from Panama Francis – all players who really keep things cool, while Cobb steps out with some well-blown solos in the lead. The album also features a bit of guest work on two tracks from Joe Newman on trumpet and Al Grey on trombone – and titles include "Cheatin On Me", "Blues For Lisette", "Keep On Pushin", "Stardust", and "Deep River".
