✨✧ Chico HamiltonPassin Thru ... LP
Impulse, 1963. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Wonderful work from one of Chico Hamilton's greatest groups! The record features Chico's quintet with Charles Lloyd on tenor and flute, Gabor Szabo on guitar, the great (and under-recorded) Al Stinson on bass and George Bohannon on trombone – and the tracks have that spaced out, slightly-Spanish tinge that Chico was crafting during his trippier years at Impulse. Szabo's guitar is a key element of this sound – but you can't discount Chico's amazingly open approach to the drums, and his freewheeling manner of spinning out a lively dancing rhythm. Titles include "Lady Gabor", "El Toro", "Passin Thru", and "Lonesome Child". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono orange & black label ABC-Paramount pressing with Van Gelder stamp. Cover has light surface wear, a smudge from price sticker removal, and some aging inside the gatefold. Label on Side 1 has a small wrinkled spot.)

✨✧ Dizzy Gillespie & MachitoAfro-Cuban Jazz Moods ... CD
Pablo/OJC, 1975. Used ... Out Of Stock
A great Dizzy Gillespie Latin session recorded during the mid 70s – proof that he could still hold onto the cubop spirit of the old days! The session features a larger group arranged and conducted by Chico O'Farril – who manages to keep a solidly Cuban groove at the base, but really let Dizzy open up with some broader horn flourishes at the top. Given the quality of actual Cuban jazz at the time, this set may well beat most of what was going on in Havana – thanks to solid solos from Dizzy, and backings from a group led by Machito, and featuring players who include Mario Bauza, Jorge Dalto, Manny Duran, Mauricio Smith, and Victor Paz. Side one features the extended "Oro, Incienso y Mirra", and side two is a 3-part suite, "Three Afro-Cuban Jazz Moods". CD
(Out of print 1990 OJC pressing.)

✨✧ Laurindo AlmeidaAcapulco 22 ... LP
Tower, Late 60s. Sealed ... Out Of Stock
Excellent work from guitarist Laurindo Almeida – a truly wonderful album, played with small combo backing, which gives the set a jazzier feel than usual! Players include Jimmy Rowles on organ, Bob Cooper on tenor, Howard Roberts on guitar, and Shelly Manne, Milt Holland, and Chico Guerro on percussion – and although there's no credits for the arrangements on the album, the overall feel is similar to Roberts best work for Capitol, especially because Rowles' work on organ gives the record such a groovy sound! Titles include "Acapulco 1922", "Misirlou", "Satin Doll", "More", "Till Then", "What Kind Of Fool Am I", and "Desafinado". (Now Sound, Jazz) LP, Vinyl record album
(Sealed 60s stereo pressing!)

✨✧ Laurindo Almeida & The Bossa Nova All StarsIt's A Bossa Nova World ... CD
Capitol (Japan), 1963. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
It's definitely a bossa nova world when Laurindo Almeida's around – given that the player first got the whole sound going in the 50s, then returned the favor in the 60s with some great albums like this for Capitol Records! The set's a bright blend of LA jazz and bossa rhythms – played by a group that also features Howard Roberts on electric guitar, Jimmy Rowles on organ, Don Fagerquist on trumpet, Bob Cooper on tenor, and Shelly Manne, Victor Feldman, and Chico Guererro on lots of percussion! Almeida plays guitar and cavaquinho on the session – and titles include "Rio Bonito", "Lisbon Antigua", "More", "Danke Shoen", "Till Then", "Say Wonderful Things", and "Sukiyaki". (Now Sound, Jazz) CD
