An amazing album by the great lost altoist Jimmy Woods! Woods is a key part of the LA postwar jazz scene – with an alto style that's a link between Ornette's modernist tone and the more inside playing of other LA boppers. In a way, he's sort of a soul jazz Anthony Ortega – with the same sort of high track record on albums, keen talent for writing, and a unique vision that's barely gotten any exposure over the years. Here, he's working with a crack group that features Carmell Jones on trumpet, Harold Land on tenor, and a young Andrew Hill (billed as Andrew Hille!) on piano. All tunes are originals by Woods, this record displays his unique, introspective sensiblity in both his performance, and compostion. A heck of a rare jazz album – and a great one too! This obscure session was cut by pianist Kenny Drew in Hollywood in 1955, with a sharp-edged west coast quartet that includes LA boppers Leroy Vinnegar on bass and Larry Marable on drums, as well as the overlooked Joe Maini on alto – a really great talent who makes the album one of Drew's greatest from the 50s. Maini clocks in one of his best performances ever, matching Drew's firey work on the keys with some tight well-toned solos that pack an incredible punch that reminds us of Sonny Criss – supported strongly by some hard and heavy work from Drew and the rhythm section. Many titles are originals, and tracks include "Talkin-Walkin", "In The Prescribed Manner", "Deadline", "Hidden Channel", and "Walkin-Talkin". Seminal session that was virtually one of the only west coast attempts to replicate the famous "cubop" mix of bebop and Latin that had been evolving over the years in the New York scene. Machito percussionists like Jose Mangual and Ubaldo Nieto join a west coast group that includes alto player Frank Morgan, trumpeter Conte Candoli, pianist Carl Perkins, and other LA boppers. The back of the record proclaims that with the death of Charlie Parker, someone must step in as the new bop genius – and Morgan does a capable job on tracks like "Wippet", "Chooch", "The Champ", and "Bernie's Tune" – and on the record's non-Latin numbers, included here to expand the release to a 12" format. One of the greatest jam session albums on Verve! Although some of the label's "big horn talent" albums tended to be a bit snoozy, this one crackles with energy, and features three different classes of boppers working together perfectly on long, lively tracks with Ray Bryant on piano, Tommy Bryant on bass, and Charlie Persip on drums. In fact, it's probably the soulful rhythm section that makes the whole thing so darn good – as they really chop up some nice rhythms on cuts like "Wheatleigh Hall", "Haute Mon", and the album's classic version of "Con Alma", plus an alternate take of "Con Alma" and the previously unreleased "Anythin'". Great stuff, and essential for fans of Diz and Rollins especially! CD

Early bop material from the great Sonny Criss – a collection of rare early live sessions, done at a time when he was one of the leading lights of the Central Ave scene! The first 3 tracks on the set feature Sonny blowing away on a set of longer tunes – recorded in 1947 with Howard McGhee, Teddy Edwards, and Hampton Hawes – on tracks that include "The Man I Love", "Orinithology", and "Body & Soul". The next 4 tracks are from 1949, and already show Sonny maturing into the soulful player of later years – working with Hampton Hawes in a quartet, on tracks that include "Calidad", "Tornado", "The First One", and "Blues For Boppers". Next up are 4 tracks from the classic Charlie Parker/Chet Baker date from June 1952 at the Tradewinds – a session that alto featured some great work from Criss on tracks that include "The Squirrel", "They Didn't Believe Me", "Indiana", and "Liza". Last up is one more Tradewinds recording from September of 1952 – with Sonny leading a quartet on a great reading of "Strike Up The Band". CD

Players include Lou Donaldson, John Lewis, Thelonious Monk, and Shadow Wilson – and Kenny "Pancho" Hagood sings vocals on 2 tracks. Tracks include "On The Scene", "Tahiti", "Lillie", "Epistrophy", and "Misterioso". 17 tracks in all – with some alternate takes, and great remastering! CD

A beautiful set of hardbop tracks from this vastly underrated trumpeter! The session was originally recorded for the Signal label, but appears here in a Savoy issue, put out a few years after the original. Rodney is in perfect form here, hitting his stride during this comeback period, and playing in a group with other mature boppers like Tommy Flanagan, Ira Sullivan, Oscar Pettiford, and Philly Joe Jones. It's the late 60s, and Eddie's creating his famous electrified Varitone sound – unique among other soul jazz players in that it actually added a lot to Eddie's work, instead of detracted from it (as with some other boppers who briefly picked up the instrument.) The Varitone's cool flat tone works extremely well with the original tracks on Electrifying Eddie Harris – like the long version of "Listen Here", the groovy "Sham Time", the Latiny "Spanish Bull", or the incredible "Theme In Search Of A Movie", written by the great Chicago soul genius Charles Stepney. The album Plug Me In features Harris along with some fantastic arrangements by Stepney. Stepney's work on the album is amazing, and he contributes incredible touches like prepared piano and funky strings, both of which make the album one of the best that Harris ever did! Titles on the session include "Live Right Now", "It's Crazy", "Winter Meeting", and "Theme In Search Of A TV Commercial". CD

Really fantastic work from Dizzy Gillespie – proof that of all the original boppers, he was maybe the one who really continued to experiment over the years – as he comes across here with a great blend of electric funk and jazz! The whole album has a sly sweet funky sound that's part CTI/part Latin-tinged Dizzy – and the real strength is the great Mike Longo, who plays some amazing stretched out piano lines, which work perfectly with the basslines on the record as a foil for Dizzy's sparkling trumpet solos. The instrumentation also features great use of Latin percussion too, and the album's got 4 long cuts – including the excellent "Me N Them", plus "Olinga", "Timet", and "Diddy Wa Diddy". Some of the first bop sides cut by Americans in Paris – a quartet of material from four different sessions, issued properly for the first time on CD, with great mastering, and a good set of notes in French and English! Don Byas is at the forefront of two sessions here – one with the Tyree Glenn Orchestra, the other featuring the Don Byas Ree-Boppers – and tracks on those include "Walking Around", "Red Cross", "Cement Mixer", "Mad Monk", "Billie's Bounce", and "The Hour Of Parting". Howard McGhee is next up – with 7 tracks from a rare 1948 session, and titles that include "Big Will", "Donna Lee", "Nicole", "Denise", and "Punkins". Last up are four tunes by James Moody – cut during the prime of his early bop years, in 1949, and done with a nicely modern edge. A wonderful pairing of these two modern boppers from the 50s – heard here on a set of rare Parisian recordings originally issued under the leadership of Henri Renaud! There's a really wonderful feel to the record – the sharp edges of Cohn and Renaud's original compositions, played with a great degree of soul by the soloists. Renaud plays piano on all tracks – and the first batch feature both Johnson's trombone and Cohn's tenor, alongside Gigi Gryce on baritone and Jerry Hurwitz on trumpet – on titles that include "Wallington Special", "Lisa", "Boo Wah", and "Something For Lili". Two more tracks – "Once In A While" and "The Things We Did Last Summer" – feature Cohn in a quartet with Renaud. And one more title – "If I Had You" – is presented in a ten minute long take, played by a group that features Johnson and Cohn with Renaud, plus Milt Jackson on vibes and Percy Heath on bass. CD
