✨✧ Yellow Magic OrchestraX 8 Multiplies (10" pressing) ... LP
Alfa (Japan), 1979. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
The second album from Harumi Hosono, Ryuichi Sakamoto and Yukihiro Takahashi, not as much of an electro groove filled affair as the first, but still a great batch of quirky techno-electro Asian pop with lots of great bubbling synth touches! 8 tracks in all including "Behind The Mask", "Day Tripper", "Technopolis", "Multiples", "Citizens Of Science" and "Solid State Survivor". ✨✧ Yuki OkazakiSo Many Friends (yellow vinyl pressing) ... LP
Warner/Lawson (Japan), 1981. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Really lovely work from Yuki Okazaki, a singer with a sound that's nicely upbeat, in ways that kick in beautifully next to the 80s production of the music! The lyrics are in Japanese, but there's almost more of a European style of production to some of the tracks – maybe because Yuki can bring in a slight touch of sentiment that really opens up the tunes. Music is by the First Bland and Sentimental City Romance combos – and titles include "Soon", "Sweet Joke", "Cafe BH", "Say Say Good Bye", "5 Minutes Wait", and "Evening Glow". Tatsuro YamashitaMoonglow ... LP
Ariola/Sony (Japan), 1979. New Copy (reissue)... $44.99 52.99
A sweet masterpiece of 70s AOR from Japan – served up by Tatsuro Yamashita, who was easily one of the most soulful male singers on the scene in the years before city pop! The record's got a jazzy vibe that's great, and which really fits the R&B-inspired midtempo rhythms – almost as if Wayne Henderson had a hand in putting the whole thing together, similar to some of his late 70s productions for Fantasy Records – but with some occasional 80s touches that also hint at changes to come in the next decade. Vocals are all in Japanese, but the record's got a very universal appeal – and titles include "Rainy Walk", "Funky Flushin", "Hot Shot", "Touch Me Lightly", "Yellow Cab", "Nightwing", and "Full Moon". ✨✧ Ryuichi Sakamoto/David SylvianMerry Christmas Mr Lawrence ... LP
MCA, 1983. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A really wonderful little record – and some of our favorite work ever from Japanese pop maestro Ryuichi Sakamoto! Sakamoto really surprised folks with this set – not just because it accompanied his strong performance (with David Bowie) in the film, but also because it opened up the way to some of the wonderful film and sound scoring work he'd do in years to come – music that was often as simple and maybe electronic as his work with Yellow Magic Orchestra, but able to create a stunning amount of feeling and depth with just a few simple elements. The music is sublime – a masterpiece in understatement – and a series of instrumental selections ends up with the fantastic song "Forbidden Colours", which features vocals by David Sylvian – on a number that was one of his first great solo moments. Other titles include "The Seed", "Father Christmas", "Dismissed", "The Fight", "Batavia", and "Germination". (Soundtracks, Japanese) LP, Vinyl record album
