✨✧ Ryuichi SakamotoOngaku Zukan (Illustrated Musical Encyclopedia) (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Midi/We Want Sounds (UK), 1984. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A pivotal album in the career of Ryuichi Sakamoto – a set that got wide global circulation right at a time when he was a rising star on the screen as much as a surprising international music star as well – of the sort who became a key global representative for all the changes that had been taking place in Japanese music at the start of the 80s! Sakamoto's got an elegant look on the cover, and the music shares that approach too – jazzier than before, but still with that key knowledge of electronic elements that Ryuichi had in YMO – almost a blend of late 70s Japanese fusion with keyboards, samples, and other technology that Sakamoto helped bring into the mainstream at the time – but also with a quality that points the way to soundtrack shifts in the Ghibli generation! This package presents the original Japanese album – not the Illustrated Musical Encyclopedia set that was circulated globally – with tracks that include "May In The Backyard", "Paradise Lost", "Self Portrait", "Etude", "Tibetan Dance", "Tribute To NJP", and other titles in Japanese. Also includes bonus material from the 12" EP – "Replica", "Tibetan Dance (version)", and "Ma Mere L'Oye". CD

Akiko YanoTadaima ... LP
Midi/We Want Sounds (UK), 1981. New Copy (reissue)... $31.99 34.99
A Japanese electro pop masterpiece from Akiko Yano – done with lots of help on production from Ryuichi Sakamoto, and lots of musical help from other members of YMO too! Yet the set's got a very different vibe than Sakmoto's music and that of his group – maybe more tuneful, at a level that really takes advantage of the fantastic vocal range of Akiko – which sometimes stretches and inflects at a level that might rival Kate Bush at the time, although in a much more electronic setting overall. Titles include "Tadaima", "Vet", "Iranaimon", "Sensei", "Otosan", "Taiyo No Onara", and "Okasan No Ohige". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Junko YagamiCommunication (purple vinyl pressing) ... LP
Moon/Lawson (Japan), 1985. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Excellent work from Junky Yagami – definitely one of the more soulful singers of the 80s city pop generation, thanks in part to production work from frequent musical partner JJ Stanley! Stanley gives the record lots of electro soul modes in the backings – working with great arrangements from Ken Yajima, Masaaki Ohmura, and Shiro Sagisu, which are all filled with basslines, beats, and mighty nice keyboard parts! This is definitely a groove-heavy record, and Junko's vocals really keep pace with the rhythms – on titles that include "Believing", "Reaching Out", "Miss DJ", "1984", "Cheater", "Imagination", and "Communication". ✨✧ Jun MiyakeJune Night Love ... LP
TDK/P-Vine (Japan), 1983. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
One of the most soulful sets that Jun Miyake ever recorded – a set that's still very strongly on the jazz side of his musical spectrum, but which also has some strong city pop elements in the production at times! Jun serves up lead flugelhorn solos, in a manner that's inspired by American soulful fusion players of the 70s – mostly with small combo backing that features keyboards from Soichi Noriki and Hiroki Inui, and tenor from Yasuki Shimizu – key players amidst an array that shifts a bit from track to track. Some cuts have acoustic rhythms, others are more electric – and one track features backing vocals from the female trio Eve! Titles include "A Thoughtful Touch", "34 West 10th Street", "I Knew I Was", "You Would Smile So", "Scorpio", and "Could It Be Real". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Lisa OnoBossa Hula Nova ... LP
Universal (Japan), 2001. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A great take on the sweet style of the lovely Lisa Ono – a record that combines two great musical passions of the Japanese scene – bossa nova and Hawaiian grooves! And although Lisa's recording in a vaguely Hawaiian mode, the style's nicely different too – mixing her usual bossa approach with a slightly sunshine-drenched style, less Hawaiian than work by Don Ho, more in a "dream" vision of Hawaii, as you might hear in some of the 60s production work by Brian Wilson. The floating lyrics of the Hawaiian tunes work well with the bossa backing – and the sweetness of the album's a perfect fit for Lisa's voice! Titles include "Manoa", "Swing Time In Honolulu", "Sway It, Hula Girl", "Nani Wai'ale'ale", and "Kaimana Hila". (Brazil, Japanese) LP, Vinyl record album
