Mars Williams with Witches & DevilsAyler Xmas – The Music Of Albert Ayler & Songs Of Christmas ... CD
Soul What, 2017. New Copy ... $12.99
One of the most dynamic Christmas albums you'd ever hope to buy – mostly because the approach here is based around the frenetic jazz style of the legendary reedman Albert Ayler! The group here is the Witches & Devils group of saxophonist Mars Williams – a combo who take their name from one of Ayler's most famous tunes – and players include Josh Berman on cornet, Fred Lonberg-Holm on cello, Jim Baker on piano and Arp, Kent Kessler on bass, Brian Sandstrom on bass and guitar, and Steve Hunt on drums – a Chicago lineup who do a great job here of folding together bits of Ayler's music with familiar Christmas themes – all at a level that's completely mindblowing! The set's definitely not one you'll play when grandma's over for dinner on the 25th of December – but it is a wonderful statement from the always-vibrant Chicago scene – with titles that include "O Tannebaum Spirits 12 Days Of Xmas", "Angels We Have Heard On High Omega Is Alpha", and "Ma'Oz Tzur Truth Is Marching In Jingle Bells". Yolanda RabunChristmastime ... CD
Yodyful Music, 2012. New Copy ... $9.99
A really special Holiday set from Yolanda Rabun – a great little Christmas record that warmly mixes together jazz and soul with a timeless vibe that will have you playing this one for years to come! Yolanda takes her cues from some of the best seasonal albums of the 70s and 80s – and goes for a mode that's contemporary, but never overdone – just the right sort of warmth to personalize the tunes, but without ever pushing towards a commercial sort of spirit. Titles include "Wishing You A Very Merry Christmas", "Sleep Oh My Little One Sleep", "Twelfth Night O Mistress Mine", "Children Go Where I Send Thee", and "I'm Coming Home For The Holidays". CD

Stanley BlackChristmas Holiday For Romance ... CD
Decca/Real Gone, 1954. New Copy ... $12.99 13.99
A classic Christmas album of makeout music from British bandleader Stanley Black! It's clear that the guy on the cover has his mind on a lot more than what's under the tree – and after pouring some bubbly, and treating his lady to some diamonds, he's ready to put on the moves – either that, or he's somehow got his teeth stuck in her hair! Regardless of the setting, though, Stanley Black serves up some nicely mellow music for the later hours of Christmas Eve – string-laden readings of Holiday tunes, done up in a nice mix of familiar and original tunes – with titles that include "Dreaming", "Christmas Island", "Santo Natale", "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus", "Christmas Alphabet", and "By The Fireside". ChipmunksChristmas With The Chipmunks ... CD
EMI, Late 50s. Used ... $1.99
One of THE greatest Christmas albums of all time – and a record that really helped define the Holiday genre for the full length LP! At the time of the set, David Seville and his Chipmunks were almost just a one-off novelty act for 50s AM radio – but this album forever cemented their place in the musical history books – not to mention around the Christmas tree! The gimmick is simple, but effective – as Seville uses sped up tape to create the sound of singing cartoony chipmunks – deconstructing Holiday tunes along the way with a variety of gags, tricks, and mischief. Seville himself plays host to the set, often getting in fights with Chipmunk Alvin – and titles include the classic "The Chipmunk Song", plus "My Two Front Teeth", "White Christmas", "Silver Bells", "We Wish You A Merry Christmas", "Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer", and "Frosty The Snowman".
