Above The LawLivin' Like Hustlers ... CD
Ruthless/Epic, 1990. Used ... $4.99
Ruthless Cali group gangsta from Above the Law – the first and probably their best LP! A benchmark – one of the planks on the bridge between the earlier efforts from NWA, Eazy E and the click and the later Dre & Snoop heyday. Livin' Like Hustlers has a few tracks produced by Dr Dre, and the rest by ATL and Laylaw. Includes "Murder Rap", "Livin Like Hustlers", "Menace To Society", "Just Kickin Lyrics", "Untouchable", "Another Execution", "Freedome Of Speech", "Flow On" and "Ballin". CD

✨✧ Future & OthersSuperfly ... LP
Epic, 2018. Sealed 2LP ... $19.99
A strong soundtrack album put together by Future! Of course Future doesn't set out to replicate the sound and style of the classic early 70s soundtrack to the original film by Curtis Mayfield, so we can honestly say there's really no reason to cry sacrilege here. It's mostly done in Future's & co.'s signature contemporary style, but with some moody, cinematic touches – after kicking off with with Mayfield homage by Sleepy Brown that's nice and appropriate as opposed to obvious and perfunctory – and other guests include Young Thug, Lil Wayne, 21 Savage, PartyNextDoor and more. Includes "If You Want It" by Sleepy Brown, The Future tracks "Walk On Minks", "Stains", "Nowhere", "What's Up With That" with 21 Savage, "No Shame" with PartyNextDoor, "Tie My Shoes", "Drive Itself" with Lil Wayne, "Snow My Chain Some Love" with Young Thug, "RAN" by Miguel and more. 13 tracks in all. Ghostface KillahBulletproof Wallets ... LP
Epic, 2001. Near Mint- 2LP ... $24.99
Ghostface's follow up to Supreme Clientele – a tough predecessor to live up, no doubt about that – but Bulletproof Wallets is still a cut or 10 above some of the Wu work of the later 90s and early 00s! The single "Ghost Showers" is a great track, and "Never Be The Same Again" with Raekwon and Carl Thomas is another killer cut – others titles include "Flowers" with Method Man & Superb, "Jealousy", "The Juks" feat Trife & Superb, "Walking Through Darkness" feat Takitha, "The Hilton", "Ice" and more. Lovebug Starski is one of the early old-school pioneers– from the prehistoric days when hip hop was live shows, before there were any hip hop records. "House Rocker", his 'comeback' record was an underground hit and is probably his best performance on wax, with a good old school solo MC style, crowd participation and scratching. 7 tracks in all including the title track, "Positive Life", "Amityville", "Saturday Night", and "Eighth Wonder". ✨✧ Beat Konducta (Madlib)Beat Konducta Vol 1 & 2 – Movie Scenes/Movie Scenes, The Sequel ... CD
Stones Throw, 2005. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The epic CD compilation of the ever prolific, ever satisfying Madlib's first 2 LPs as Beat Konducta – a instrumental song suite of beats for films that do not exist anywhere but the fevered mind of the genius beatcrafter! 'Lib's production work has always had a bit of a filmic groove, and this set collects and assembles the most cinematic of said beats into an (unsurprisingly) incredible whole. The soundscapes really kind of run the gamut of his hip hop styles – always soulful, and always funky, whether he's rocking a stone funk or an electro-modeled groove. Honestly, how much longer is it going to take for the mainstream to finally catch up with this genius!?! Collects tracks from the 2 separate volumes of vinyl: "The Comeback (Madlib)", "The Payback (Gotta)", "Face The Sun (Africa)", "Stax (Strings)", "Left On Silverlake (Ride)", "Offbeat (Grooves)", "Pyramids (Change)", "Eternal Broadcaster (Authentic)", "The Rock (Humps)", "Filthy (Untouched)", "Money Hugger (Gold Diggin'", "Black Mozart (Opus II)", "Snake Charmer (Heads Up)", "African Walk (Zamunda)", "The Forest (Greens)", "Outerlimit (Space Ho)" and more! ✨✧ DJ Nu-MarkBroken Sunlight (2CDs/DVD) ... CD
Hot Plate, 2012. Used 2CD & DVD ... Out Of Stock
Finally a strong full-length from Nu-Mark – the myriad strengths of which were amply hinted up via the epic 10" series that led up to it – and an album that packs plenty of diverse, timeless beatcraft and stellar guests on the mic! Nu-Mark's got a sharp, crisp edge with his beats – one that really seems to set a new sort of fire without ever being too overly-aware of its own style – often with these soulful undercurrents that help his music reach way past the usual, too! Vocals and rhymes are by a great batch of A-list talents – including Aloe Blacc, Charles Bradley, Bumpy Knuckles, Ernie Hines, Large Professor, J-Live, and Tiron – and one cut even features some sweet funky touches from Quantic. This deluxe CD edition features the album Disc 1. Disc 2 is a CD-ROM – featuring the instrumentals and acapella versions of most tracks, plus some bonus beats – with 32t tracks in all! tour and in-studio photos, the cover images from the Broken Sunlight 10-inch series and more! Disc 3 is a DVD – featuring the mini-film/video Nu-Conduit with live and behind the scenes footage. Amazing! Titles include "Oya Indebure", "Tropicalifornia", "Tough Break", "Feel The Way About It", "Vengeance Is Mine", "Dumpin Em All", "Our Generation (re-edit)", "When You Sleep", "Never Be Wrong", "Times Is Rough", and "Tonight". Bulk, 2018. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $18.99 25.99
The instrumental companion to the triumphant return of Dr Octagon – finally a worthy follow-up to the Dr Octagon/Dr Octagonecologyst album, one of the most influential hip hop LPs ever – we can't imagine Madvillian and so many other other willfully out there rap classics would've happened without it! Dan The Automator's incredible production is so epic, DJ Qbert's scratchwork so masterful, we've always considered it a group project rather than a Kool Keith-only thing. The instros make that case pretty strongly! Includes "Octagon Octagon", "Polka Dots", "Black Hole Son", "Operation Zero", "Bear Witness IV", "Area 54", "3030 Meets The Doc Pt 1", "Karma Sutra", "Hollywood Tailswinging" and more – plus LP bonus track "Aviator Hype". Madlib & Frank NittMadlib's Medicine Show No 9 – Channel 85 Presents Nittyville (Season One) ... CD
Madlib Invazion, 2011. Used ... $9.99
The missing piece of the epic Madlib's Medicine Show series – No 9 in the eclectic soundscape architects year-long effort to release full length albums on a near-monthly basis ended up following No 11, but the collaboration with MC Frank Nitt is worth the wait! Nittyville is funky hip hop excellence that's, in a way, one of the most straight-forward entries in the series. Solid wordplay delivered sharply by Nitt and funky Madlib production that's framed to suit. That said, 'Lib's an adventurous cat, so even as straight up hip hop it's challenging convention at every turn. The sorta concept of the album is that it's Channel 85 is running a show called Nittyville, with a support cast that includes Oh No & MED. Includes "Nittyville (The Landing)", "So Beautiful (Dues Paid)", "Stageridin", "Jus Follow", Eyegotcha", "What Can U Tell Me" feat MED, "Red Light Green", "Set It Off" and more. CD

Madlib & OthersMadlib's Medicine Show No 3 – Beat Konducta In Africa ... CD
Madlib Invazion, 2010. Used ... $9.99
Raw crackling hip hop funk beatcraft at its deepest from mighty Madlib – working in his Beat Konducta style for this third entry in the epic Madlib's Medicine Show Series! Beat Konducta In Africa is a hazy hip hop instrumental set from 'Lib (lest you thought it might be a funky compilation of rare African material) with some additional mixing from J Rocc – based on rare African vinyl. The sound is pure Madlib/Beat Konducta heady hip hop funk – recognizable as being spun from and inspired by African material, and impeccably so, with that instantly identifiable, exploratory Madlib sonic stamp. He looks far beyond Afrobeat and funk sources, with some raw funk rock beats, psych, garage and more with some trippy vocal samples – and he's building up from blueprints records originally pressed all over Africa – Zambia, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Ghana, Botswana and Ivory Coast. But too much mention of the source material risks making this sound like a compilation or a mix set, when it's Madlib all the way! Titles include "Motherland", "Raw Introduction To Afreaka", "Warrior's Theme", "Street Hustler", "Afritonic" (Pts 1 & 2), "Tradition", "Blackfire", "Obtaive", "Mtima", "African Bounce", "Freedom Play", "Natural Sound Waves", "Unika (Outro)" and many more. 43 tracks on the CD version, which includes 6 bonus tracks. The first EP by Pete Rock & CL Smooth – and one of the greatest debut EPs in hip hop history – fleshed out here with bonus mixes and instrumentals! The original EP material is as stunning as ever, really showing the Pete & CL were in near peak form right outta gate – setting up the signature Pete Rock's signature jazz and soul sample mastery, perfectly suited to CL's brilliant, though laidback MC skills. Rasheed ChappellFirst Brick ... CD
Kay Dee, 2019. New Copy ... $12.99 14.98
Rasheed Campbell's a hell of an MC – one who pulls no punches at all when tying together his environment and the way it's shaped his outlook on life – and he works here with the mighty Kenny Dope, who produced and mixed the whole record – and really gives it a massive kick right from the start! Kenny brings massively heavy drums to most tracks – of the sort he's been remixing on vintage funk records for the past decade or so – while Rasheed spins out the rhymes, mostly on his own, but with occasional help from Daniel Son, Crimeapple, OC, and Recognize Ali. Titles include "First Brick", "Shorty Rock (part 1)", "Aiding & Abetting", "Franchise", "101", "Banana King On Broadway", and "My Epic". CD

✨✧ RJD2Since We Last Spoke ... CD
Def Jux, 2004. Used ... Just Sold Out!
RJD2 returns with more of his signature style epic hip hop. This time out – no rappers allowed, which was a good move in our book, considering his production really shines when he doesn't cater to an MC. This effort has got a little bit of fusion flare, with wisps of synths on some tracks and space age ricochet drums underneath those soulful (or rockin) guitar licks. Though he could shy away from sampling power chords even more, there's loads and loads of really nice piano work on the best tracks. This set moves from his usual flare for crafting those bombast uptempo frantic head bangin jams into these smoothed out late, late, late night bedroom talk soundtrack slow jams, with a bit of everything in between. Tracks include the sublime "Making Days Longer", "One Day", "To All Of You", "Clean Living", "Since We Last Spoke", "1976", "Iced Lightning", "Through The Walls", and "Someone's Second Kiss". CD

✨✧ Rolling Stones/Neptunes/Fatboy SlimSympathy For The Devil Remix CD Single (SACD pressing) ... CD
Abkco, 2003. Used ... $6.99
The Stones may be old, but they ain't dumb! Mick & co. must have noticed the huge shot of artistic credibility Justin Timberlake received after the Neptunes hopped aboard, which is something the Stones haven't had in a couple of decades. The 'Tunes do a pretty great re-imagined take on the classic rock staple – adding some sitar and Eastern string touches on top of their patented minimal claps, snaps, and thumps. On top of the full length Neptunes mix and an edit you get Fatboy Slim's mix, also in epic form plus radio edit. Cook's is a fine, bubble gum club mix with a Happy Mondays kind of vibe. The Full Phat mix strays the most from the original, keeping Mick's vocal and the whoo-whoos, but completely strips the band and adds all electronic beats. The original version is here for you kids who didn't realize there was one! (Rock, Hip Hop) CD

✨✧ RootsPhrenology (limited edition CD & DVD) ... CD
MCA, 2002. Used CD & DVD ... $3.99
A new hip hop soul masterpiece!!! On Things Fall Apart ?uestlove, Black Thought, DJ Scratch, Rahzel and co. reinvigorated the scene with a Philly style soulful, melancholy groove that seemingly influenced the entirety of the NuSoul world – and it could even be argued that the Roots birthed that whole scene. Phrenology carries that torch, but it's so, SO much more, as the heady nature weighed the previous LP down in spots, and Phrenology is a sprawling exercise in expectation-busting perfection! "Rock You" kicks things off in explosive fashion, forgoing the laid back, yet angry soul backbone the group pioneered in hop hop, for a massive electro pulse pounding style – with Black Thought frenetically spitting confrontational wisdom until the synth unexpectedly dives into a short burst of live hardcore punk with "!!!!!!!" (we know what you're thinking, but trust us, it REALLY works). "Sacrifice" features a surprisingly effective chorus sung by Nelly Furtado, and other guest spots include Kweli heating up "Rolling With Heat", Ursula Rucker kicking some reverential poetry on "Waok (ay) Rollcall", and Musiq on the single "Break You Off". Other highlights include the late 80s Bomb Squad-like production on "Thought @ Work", the group's live instrumentation (and ?uestlove's always great trap work) and soul claps on tunes like "The Seed (2.0)", the epic "Water", and "Complexity" with Jill Scott. If you're solely of the 2 turntables and a mic camp you may want to head elsewhere, but if you've been anxiously awaiting the new Roots LP like we have, you'll be knocked straight on your arse, welled up with tears of joy. The best major label hip hop album of '02, and a beauty to go in the time capsule for future generations to learn, and mourn what they missed first hand. Amazing!!! Other tracks include "Quills", "Pussy Galore", and "Something In The Way Of Things (In Town)". CD
(Limited edition CD comes with a bonus DVD. DVD label has some bubbling.)
