Run-DMCDown With The King (red & white/black & white vinyl pressing) ... LP
Profile/Get Down, 1993. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $30.99 34.99
An important early 90s moment for Run DMC – as the set has one of the first big major hip hop acts of the 80s, retuning themselves slightly for the new decade – in part by opening the door to added guests and producers for the record! The core energy that makes the trio so great is still very firmly in place – including inventive work on the turntables from Jam Master Jay – who produces here too, alongside Pete Rock, Jermain Dupri, EPMD, and Q-Tip too. Titles include the great title track, "Down With The King" – plus "Come On Everybody", "Can I Get It Yo", "Hit Em Hard", "Big Willie", "In The House", "Wreck Shop", "Can I Get A Witness", "Get Open", "What's Next", and "3 In The Head". ✨✧ CappadonnaPillage (black swirl vinyl pressing) ... LP
Sony/Get On Down, 1998. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... Out Of Stock
The debut solo set from Cappadonna, and a set that's definitely one of the darker side projects from the Wu-Tang empire – a record that still shares all that groundbreaking production and great sense of samples and sound that other members and the group were showing at the time, but which also has a lot more edge in the lyrics, which reflect some of the rapper's own experience and struggles. There's a very moody vibe to the whole set – almost a hazier take on Wu-Tang territory, with production by RZA and The Wu Elements – and titles include "The Pillage", "Slang Editorial", "Run", "Blood On Blood War", "Supa Ninjaz", "Dart Throwing", "Young Hearts", MCF, "South Of The Border", "Everything Is Everything", and "Black Boy". Stones Throw, 2020. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A rock solid effort from one of the finer producers on Stones Throw at this stage in the label's esteemed history! If you expect 1988 to be throwback effort by the number title, think again, but he's not as predictable as that anyway. He sets an impeccable and unpredictable mood that stays rooted in adventurous instrumental hip hop – with tracks like "Learn" that feel like a contemporary instrumental hip hop take on late 70s Bob James jazz, to soaring hip hop soul with bright keys and vocal samples, even bits of 80s boogie funk that do feel at home on a record called 1988. Includes "Don't Be Afraid", "Do You", "Listen", "Makeitliveforever", "Be Safe", "Mindin' My Business" with Durand Bernarr, "Uonlygetone", "With (Reality)", "Awomanslifeislove", "Solivelive" and more. 22 tracks in all! ✨✧ Black Star (Mos Def & Talib Kweli)Mos Def & Talib Kweli Are Black Star (two-tone vinyl with star design) ... LP
Rawkus, 1998. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The first full-length from Mos Def and Talib Kweli together as Black Star – a benchmark moment in hip hop history, and one of the finest duo vocal hip hip records of the 90s – and one of the best ever on Rawkus! In hindsight, it's all the more rewarding given Talib Kweli's longevity in proud, mic skills centric hip hop and while highs and lows of Mos Def's work as the years rolled along – and it still stands as strong (then) underground hip hop that takes on the ghetto fabulous themes of the day and well beyond. Stand out cuts include "Definition" "Twice Inna Lifetime", "Children's Story" – the Slick Rick classic redone along the lines of Jeru's "One Day" – and "Respiration" featuring Common Sense – and other tracks include "Brown Skin Lady", "Yo Yeah", "Thieves In The Night", "Twice Inna Lifetime and more. 13 in all. ✨✧ El Michels Affair & Black ThoughtGlorious Game (blue vinyl pressing) ... LP
Big Crown, 2023. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Leon Michels has given us plenty of hip hop-inspired funk over the years, but this might be his first real hip hop project overall – a stunning set that mixes the live instrumentation of El Michels Affair with rhymes from Black Thought of The Roots – all at a level that might well set a new standard for both styles of music! The grooves are great – that subtle sense of drama that Michels always brings to the music – informed by old school action scores, but with the lean energy of a funky 45 – and although Black Thought has had live backing before, the El Michels approach here really seems to unlock something different in his vocals – maybe more power and drama than we might have guessed. Titles include "I'm Still Somehow", "Miracle", "Glorious Game", "That Girl", "The Weather", "I Would Never", "Grateful", and "Hollow Way". (Deep Funk, Hip Hop) LP, Vinyl record album

Silver Age/Universal, 2023. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
What we once thought might've been a short-lived, if rewarding east coast team up of Wu Tang's Inspectah Deck and Boston heroes 7L & Esoteric has gone on to be one of the longest running later career supergroups this side of Run The Jewels! Old and mid school styled funky/sci-fi/vintage comic book style like we haven't heard since Doom left us, paired with some icey cool bits of synth and other and fresh touches on the production side – nicely setting up Deck's rhymes, still spitting sharp and smart after all these years. Includes "Czarchimedes' Death Day", "Blast Off", "All That For A Drop Of Blood", "Mama's Basement", "Frenzy In A Far Off Land" with Frankie Pulitzer, "Czarsenic", Gate Crasher" with Logic, "Sirens" and "Helicopter" Godfather Don & Kool Keith and more. Brand New HeaviesHeavy Rhyme Experience Vol 1 (orange vinyl pressing) ... LP
Delicious Vinyl/Craft, 1992. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 24.99
A pivotal album from the early 90s – one that not only furthered the rebirth of live funk instrumentation at a time when ditigal elements dominated the scene – but also really opened up that mode to a whole new generation of hip hop as well! At a time when the music was all about the samples and beats, Brand New Heavies took it back to the generation before – and provided live instrumentation for a host of fantastic talents – a legendary lineup that includes performances from Main Source, The Pharcyde, Black Sheep, Kool G Rap, Gang Starr, and Masta Ace – all young and at the top of their game, with a quality level that alone would make the album great – then really sends it over the top when paired with the instrumentation! The whole thing's amazing – still maybe yet to be topped in such a style – and titles include "Who Makes The Loot", "It's Getting Hectic", "Wake Me When I'm Dead", "Soul Flower", and "Bonafide Funk". Digable PlanetsBlowout Comb (clear & purple vinyl pressing) ... LP
Pendulum/Modern Classics, 1994. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $39.99 42.99
A lasting classic from Digable Planets, and a record that really helped push the bar forward for hip hop at the time – at a level that's still kept this one strong all these many years later! Digable Planets weren't the first group to bring in some influence from jazz to their work – but they definitely found the right balance here, and a way of setting things up that was real and organic, instead of maybe just a nodding reference to the past that always felt a bit out of place. The use of live instrumentation next to samples is also key to the record's sound – common now, but pretty important at the time, especially in a world of declining sample access. The trio of Butterfly, Ladybug, and Doodlebug have a wonderful way of tripping through the lyrics – and titles include "The May 4th Movement Starring Doodlebug", "Black Ego", "Dog It", "Jettin", "Borough Check", "Highing Fly", "Dial 7", "The Art Of Easing", "KBs Alley", "Graffiti", "Blowing Down", "9th Wonder", and "For Corners". Earl SweatshirtSick (blue vinyl pressing) ... LP
Warner, 2023. New Copy ... $25.99 27.99
A wickedly sharp album from Earl Sweatshirt – a set that comes on strong from the very first notes, then keeps on with a tightness that really makes a nice difference from some of Earl's other albums – an approach that's maybe more compact in terms of the way the songs are laid out, especially compared to sprawling efforts from bigger names – at a level that shows that there's plenty to learn from the left side of the spectrum in hip hop! Production is by Black Noise and The Alchemist, Armand Hammer make a guest appearance on "Tabula Rasa", and other cuts include "Old Friend", "2010", "Sick", "Fire In The Hole", "Titanic", "Vision", "God Laughs", and "Lye". Warner, 2024. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
Earl Sweatshirt has always been at the forefront of hip hop – and here, he really continues that legacy, by also reaching backwards for the production skills of The Alchemist – whose special touch on the record really creates a whole new milieu for Earl's lyrics! There's a dreamlike quality to the record, but one that's also stripped-down enough to feel personal – a refinement of Alchemist's style, often with a great focus on just one or two instrumental elements – almost like spare spicing to really keep the vocals in the lead. Titles include "Dead Zone", "Free The Ruler", "27 Braids", "Mac Deuce", "My Brother The Wind", "100 High Street", "Sentry", "Sirius Black", "The Caliphate", and "Mancala" – the last two of which feature Vince Staples! ✨✧ Killer MikeMichael (gold vinyl pressing) ... LP
Loma Vista, 2023. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
Maybe the most powerful, personal album that Killer Mike ever recorded – a set that took many years to put together, and which definitely represents the journey the rapper was experiencing at the time! Mike channels some of his own experience to deal with the larger issues that are facing so many black Americans in recent years – and while some of his resolutions are definitely his own, they are delivered with a sense of power that certainly resonates at a much larger level too! Production includes some great work from No ID, plus Cool & Dre, Twhy Xclusive, and Little Shalimar – and the album has features from Ty Dolla Sign, Andre 3000, Jagged Edge, and El-P. Titles include "Motherless", "Something For Junkies", "Exit 9", "Two Days", "Spaceship Views", "Slummer", "High & Holy", "Don't Let The Devil", "Down By Law", and "Shed Tears". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ KRS-OneReturn Of The Boom Bap (blue & yellow vinyl pressing) ... LP
Jive/Get On Down, 1993. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... Out Of Stock
The first solo set by KRS-One on his own – maybe a bit of a surprise, given that he was really the driving force and main voice of Boogie Down Productions after the first album – yet one that also gives him a chance to spotlight some new wisdom and a growing sense of identity! The set has KRS working with some great producers – DJ Premier, Showbiz, and Kid Capri – while also doing plenty of production on his own – all at a level that seems to only intensify the sound and increase the sense of urgency in his music! That quality really comes through on the timeless cut "Sound Of The Police" – maybe even more powerful now than when it was recorded – next to other classics that include "Outta Here", "I Can't Wake Up", "Black Cop", "Stop Frontin'", "Uh Oh", "Hip Hop Vs Rap", "Brown Skin Woman", and "Return Of The Boom Bap". RCA/Get On Down, 1993. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Ain't no party like a Alkoholik party – and year after year, this debut album still stands as one of the group's strongest moments! The album's a real landmark from the west coast scene – served with straight up, stripped down beats from E Swift and King Tee – plus a couple of very early Madlib tracks as well! And although the album's got more rhymes about booze than we could have imagined in rap, then or now, it transcends the motif big time – never too sloshed to raise the bar – maybe making that move from politics to party that Black Flag did the decade before. Titles include "Lik Wit", "Only When I'm Drunk", "Last Call", "Can't Tell Me Sh*t", "Turn Tha Party Out", "Bullsh*t", "Soda Pop", "Make Room", "Mary Jane", and "Who Dem Ni**as". Pun was a bit mean, but his flow here is his lean and precise – and he's sharp form throughout. Production wise, Loud Record seems to control the secret formula for a perfect mix of commercial success and straight dope hip hop at the end of the 90s – and the set opens up with guest appearances by Black Thought of The Roots, Raekwon, Fat Joe and more. Relativity/Get On Down, 1997. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... Out Of Stock
The fantastic third album from Common – the record that really catapulted him on his way to stardom, yet a set that still retains all the best aspects of his early days in Chicago! Part of that quality comes from the superb production of No ID, who gets a bit of local help from Dug Infinite and Twilite Tone – all talents who have that special, sophisticated vibe that was really starting to flow from Chicago out to the rest of the world – and which here is perfect for the well-crafted lyrics from Common! The balance is great – never too hard or heavy, yet also not trying to ape either a west coast quirky or New York native tongues approach. This time around, there's also plenty of guests on board, of the sort that Common would soon be rubbing shoulders with on a regular basis – a lineup that includes The Roots, Q-Tip, Erykah Badu, Canibus, Black Thought, Lauryn Hill, and De La Soul. Yet throughout, the vibe is Common's and Chicago's – something that's always made us very proud to be from the same scene at the same time. ✨✧ Handsome Boy Modeling SchoolWhite People (white vinyl pressing) ... LP
Tommy Boy, 2004. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Just when you thought Prince Paul and Cat Power would never make a record together PRESTO – it's the new Handsome Boy album! HBMS takes a bit more of a chillout tack with this long overdue second opus – with lots of laidback beats and samples, and a surprising amount of live instrumentation! The gleeful, sarcastic comedy of the stellar first album remains intact, with some genuinely amusing skits (including one with Jay Z appearing under the pseudonym Hines Buchanan), and the deep range of guest vocalists isn't as surprising as how strong their work is in the best tunes. It would have been pretty easy for Prince Paul and Automator to find a bunch of interesting names to flesh out their big pop culture frappe, but something else altogether to make trippy hip hop tracks featuring Cat Power and the Hieroglyphics make sense on the same record. A pretty solid set from the most adventurous pseudo duo in the game! Guests include Del The Funky Homosapien, De La Soul, RZA, Lord Finesse, AG, Rahzel, Jazzy Jay, Qbert, Mike Patton, Casual, Hieroglyphics, Grand Wizard Theodore, El-P, John Oates, Pharrell, Kid Koala, and George W. While this set never got the major label push that debuts by the other groups would have, the set was an instant sensation in the world of hip hop – the start of a new level of wit and wisdom – urban sensibility able to look back at itself, almost a postmodern commentary on the then-short history of hip hop! Production is great – and the JBs not only reworked use of classic samples, but also added a newly jazzy sensibility – on titles that include "On the Run", "Straight Out the Jungle", "Black Is Black", "Braggin & Boastin", "Behind The Bush", "Because I Got It Like That", and the classic "Jimbrownski". By the time of the set, hardcore was mainstream – and few folks know how to explore that territory like Three 6 – years from time when anyone had to worry about offending anyone too much with a record that was stepping too hard, and just able to revel in the kind of vibes they first crafted many records back. The second album from Kendrick Lamar, and the one that really helped bring his talents to the rest of the world – and maybe mark a whole new generation of hip hop in the process! At some level, Lamar is in the same territory as many of the south Cali rappers before him – with tales of rough life on the mean streets – but his approach here is very different, both in terms of the personal quality in the lyrics and the subtle drama in his presentation – and the lean production, which seems to strip things bare, and avoid the thuggish cliches that might celebrate such a background. Even the title alone hints at the tension that's made the record so durable over the years – and titles include "Bitch Don't Kill My Vibe", "The Art Of Peer Pressure", "Money Trees", "Poetic Justice", "MAAD City", "Singing About Me I'm Dying Of Thirst", "Real", and "Compton". Apollo Brown & StalleyBlacklight (neon green vinyl pressing) ... LP
Mello Music Group, 2022. New Copy ... $22.99 34.99
Stalley is great here amidst production work from Apollo Brown – who gives the record this cool groove that's almost cinematic at times – lots of rich sonic elements, but used in these really focused ways – so that when Stalley's voice comes out front in the mix, it's supported by plenty of power, yet never overwhelmed! The approach gives the MC a great sort of intensity – perfect for his slower-stepping rhymes, on titles that include "Bobby Bonilla", "Love Me Love Me Not", "No Monsters", "Humble Wins", "We Outside", "Lost Angeles", "Blacklight", "Broad Spectrum", and "What The Hook Gon Be". ✨✧ Slum VillageTrinity – Past, Present, & Future (colored vinyl pressing) ... LP
Capitol/Ne'Astra, 2002. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... Out Of Stock
This is the Slums' biggest outing so far without the full participation of Jay Dee – but never fear, Jay shows up here on a few tracks, and you also get beats by Hi Tek and others. The tracks are mostly on the short side, moving the flow along at a consistent clip – and the beats are the nice kind of tight, minimal synth bumps. There's also some sweet, soulful touches not unlike the ones we love so much on the best Blackalicious tracks. Pure hip hop that sounds comfortably new, but without any concessions to current trends! Tracks include "Tainted" and "Star" with Dwele, "Insane", "Slumber", "Let's", "S.O.U.L.", "Love U Hate", "Unisex", "La La", "All-Ta-Ment", "Get Live", "What Is This", "Hoes", "Disco", "Fall In Love", and more. 23 in all, including skits and interludes.
