✨✧ VariousGood God! – Born Again Funk ... CD
Numero, 1970s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Damn funky gospel soul – the sort you'd hardly expect from spiritual folks like these, but which flourished strongly alongside more standard church-related work in the 70s! The package is a stunning follow up to Numero's first Good God volume – and really digs even deeper than that great set – pulling out a mad flurry of rare funky 45s that easily match any hip secular soul at the time, at least in the spirit of the groove! The lyrics are definitely on the righteous tip, but never too much so – and the earthly rhythms at the bottom of most tracks is more than enough to help pitch the grooves strongly towards anyone who's never even set foot inside of a church. As usual, Numero do an excellent job with the notes and details on all cuts – showing they really put a hell of a lot of thought into the collection – and titles include "I Know I've Been Changed" by Victory Travelers, "Pray A Little Longer" by Lucy Sister Soul Rogers, "Packing A Grip" by Golden Echoes, "Like A Ship" by Pastor TL Barrett & The Youth For Christ, "Been Trying" by Chicago Travelers, "The Same Thing It Took" by Inspirational Gospel Singers, "Somebody Watching You" by Sacred Four, "Peter & John" by Andrew Wartts & The Gospel Storytellers, "I Thank You Lord" by Little Chris & The Righteous Singers, and "Share Your Love" by Sensational Five Singing Sons. (Funky Compilations, Gospel) CD

✨✧ VariousNew Flava Vol 1 ... LP
NBN, 1996. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
A really great project, and one that definitely lives up to the new flava promised in the title – as the album features mid 90s gospel groups that are all working strongly with some of the neo soul currents that were going on in the global underground of the time! Don't think of this as a classic gospel album, but instead a set of spiritual tracks crafted in the generation that gave us Ledisi and N'Dambi – really well-done work all produced by Paul Cumberbatch, with a very unified vibe across all the tracks. Titles include "Spirit In My Life" by Charlene Reid, "Are You In The Light" by John Gibbins & Marissa Anglin, "Love So Unconditional" by Stella, "Do You Really Know" by Tyrone Henry, "Turn It Inside Out" by John Gibbons, "That's What I Believe" by Janine Cross, and "My Reason For Life" by Samantha Edwards. ✨✧ Eddie RobinsonReflections Of The Man Inside ... LP
Myrrh, 1974. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Very hip gospel soul – handled by Eddie in a sweet southern style, with arrangements by Jimmy Roach and Paul Riser, and an approach that's more Memphis mainstream than it is gospel. There's some great mellow soul production on here – with some really righteous bits that almost feel like they were lifted from Marvin Gaye's What's Going On, with the same sort of building strings and well arranged overall sound. Titles include "You Are Never Left Alone", "The Door Is Open", "Reflections Of The Man Inside", "I've Been Touched", and "I'm Leaving It Up To You". LP, Vinyl record album
