A hip group from Sierra Leone – but one who recorded these tracks in the US during the late 70s – which makes for a very unusual hybrid of sounds! The group's original approach was to update regional sounds from their nation, and avoid some of the more commercial cover versions of Anglo hits on the market – but over the years they played a fair bit on the Canary Islands, and then on the west coast of the US – and seemed to pick up a range of funky influences in the process! The result is a sound that's rooted in Africa, but peppered with lots of skittish rhythms and fast instrumental riffing – a bit like some of the post-colonial work on the London and Paris scenes of the time, but a bit different too. The cuts here were all originally issued in the US on the Makossa label – that hotbed of cross-cultural creativity – and titles include "Bi Loko", "Yamba Sowe", "Wali Bena", "Be Patient", and "Ben Ben Bee". Revelatory sounds from Emahoy Tsege Mariam Gebru – an Ethiopian nun, but one who had a secret side life as a pianist and composer – stepping out here on a selection of solo tracks that have a wonderfully captivating vibe! Gebru's music first got wider exposure in the Ethiopiques series, but the sounds within are hardly the better-known grooves from that nation in the 70s – and instead, the tracks are beautifully intimate, and almost have a pastoral sort of quality – minimal piano lines sometimes touched with spiritual vocals – but with a spirituality that's much more universal and secular than you might guess from Gebru's work in the church – almost 4AD at times, but in a lo-fi way. A really fantastic idea for a project – and one that comes off even better than we would have guessed – new versions of classic grooves from the nations of Cabo Verde and Guinea Bissau, performed by a really well-matched group of singers and musicians, in a mode that's quite different than the usual revival record of this nature! The songs are definitely classics, but the presentation is very contemporary – directed by producer Guts, and Francisco Sousa, with a special ear for avoiding the sorts of cliches that both mar a project like this, and some of the stereotypes that get reinforced by reissues on the market. Instead, there's a fresh criss-crossing of cultures, but one that never waters down the roots at all – maybe a bit like some of the best Parisian productions of the 70s and 80s post-colonial years. A set from the 80s, but a record with a very timeless feel – as Ephat Mujuru plays mbira here with a group that's heavy on percussion, and which features all these wonderful vocal refrains alongside the lead! The mbira is never buried in fuller instrumentation – and instead, the chromatic keys of the instrument get plenty of space to play out with the kind of warmth that makes the thumb piano such a blend of melody and percussion at once, with a universal sort of appeal that goes way beyond the boundaries of language in the lyrics. This one's a killer batch of rare funk tracks from 70s Africa – with the feel of Nigeria 70, Club Africa, and some of our best Afro Funk compilations – a bit thin on notes, but with a track list that kicks some serious booty! In fact, we might dare say that this is one of the best-ever sets we've seen of 70s Afro Funk – with 10 numbers that blow past the obvious, taking the groove into some completely heavy territory – hard drums, scratchy guitar, and blasting off-kilter horns on nearly every number. Highly percussive sounds from the kingdom of Buganda – an area that predates the formation of modern day Uganda, and which has an equally ancient sound to its music! The work here is served up on a variety of instruments – percussion, drums, flutes, and stringed instruments – but there seems to be a unifying approach throughout, as all of the cuts have a fast-moving sort of intensity, which also seems to inspire the vocals with similar energy – very different than most other East African work that we've heard, and with a special quality that feels very timeless, even though most of these recordings are from the postwar years! A great discovery of this overlooked tradition – with selections from Albert Bisao Sssempke, Erusana Lutwana & Budo African Music Club, Evaristo Muyinda, Kopolyano Kyobo, Kalema Hassan Katipa, and Semuwemba George William. The Nigerian scene might be best-remembered as a hotbed of Afro Funk in the 70s – but during the same key stretch, the nation also gave rise to a heady rock underground, too – one that often mix psychedelic inspirations with some of the soul and funk that were coming from the bigger names on their scene at the time! In other words, there's plenty of guitars here – but also plenty of groove – basslines that really get the tunes going, and a mix of funky drums and rootsy percussion that make the music way more than just standard rock of the time – and even a lot groovier than some of the Zamrock or South African sounds that got a bit more exposure. Fantastic sounds for fans of funk and rock alike – music from the freaky, fuzzy 70s scene in Zambia – a place where styles effortlessly criss-crossed to really produce something new and unique! The work here is often heavy on fuzz guitars, but also has some wickedly soulful basslines and drums – so that although the tunes can be psych-styled, they're also pretty darn funky too – often at a level that's a bit like the Nigerian Afro Funk of the time, but much grittier and more righteous! Hugh Masekela kicks off the 70s with this wonderfully bold statement – a record that's light years from the shorter, simpler instrumentals of his earliest American years – and which really shows Hugh trying to reach out for a new groove! Masekela sings a bit on the set – often with this raspy tone that echoes his slight grimace on the cover – and instrumentation includes lots of work from other LA electric jazz giants, including members of The Crusaders – with Joe Sample on Fender Rhodes, Monk Montgomery and Wilton Felder on bass, Arthur Adams on guitar, and Larry Willis on piano. Some of the best tracks have earthy percussion at the bottom – congas by Francisco Aguabella – which complicates the rhythms in a great way – and titles include "Woza", "I Can't Dance", "Make Me A Potion", "Sala Le Mane", "Traces", and "Leave Us Alone". Do yourself a favor, and splurge on this album – you won't be disappointed! The record is a gem all the way through – a really unique mixture of LA soul jazz and African rhythms, with a sound that's almost like Hugh Masekela sitting in with the Jazz Crusaders! Of course, there's a lot of Jazz Crusaders in the set – as Wilton Felder plays electric bass on the album, giving it a fantastic loping groove – but there's also plenty of unique albums on the record, especially its way of approaching the rhythms with a sly, syncopated groove that's immediately infectious! Duke's trumpet solos are great, and they're augmented by tenor work by Chester Washington and trombone by George Bohannon – all nicely grooving on the album's brilliant blend of jazzy tracks.
