A record with a great mix of subtle drama and soulful styles – served up by Egyptian singer Nagat, with help from the Al Massrieen group of Hany Shenouda! This isn't all-out Arabic club music, but there's some contemporary instrumentation in the mix that really works well – especially on the title track that leads off the whole first side of the album, an extended track that builds over the space of almost 20 minutes in length! A key American release for one of the most popular bands in Niger – a really unique ensemble whose sound definitely reflects their cultures place at the crossroads of north Africa! The music is heavy on guitars – criss-crossing in ways that clearly take inspiration from high-life, but which have exotic tones that feel much more like music from Mali, too – almost kora-like inflections, which ring out wonderfully over bass and percussion, alongside vocals that have these rich inflections that are extremely musically too – and which are maybe even the most powerful element in the songs. Everything swirls together beautifully, in this hypnotic groove that never lets up for a minute – and which should hopefully get these guys the sort of exposure that they deserve. Most folks can't even find Estonia on the map, much less tell you about its music – yet that might change soon, thanks to the legendary quality of the rare gems on this set! Fantastic sounds from the glory days of the Burkina Faso scene – a time when the country's place at the crossroads of West Africa was helping to create some really amazing music! There's no set style here that defines the groove – as some tracks seem to flow from Nigerian funk, while others have echoes of Mali, and still others might show an influence from the North African changes of the period – but all with an ear towards the kinds of sounds that might burst out from the landlocked nation, and try to catch fire on the wider global market of the time. As you might guess from the Mr Bongo presentation of the music, there's a fair bit of funk in the mix – some heavy basslines or drums on about half of the tunes, mixed with lighter local instrumentation on some of the others – criss-crossing throughout in a really great way! It's hard to imagine the scene at Studio 54 in the Soviet scene of the late 70s – but, as with most of the world at the time, the USSR managed to pick up more than a few influences from the disco years in America – a range of sounds that it held on to for longer than the bit club years back home! At some level, the music here is maybe more electro pop, of the sort that other European nations were starting to cut in the mid 70s – playful tunes that have lots of keyboards and other electric elements, used in ways that make the catchy Russian lyrics even more groovy than they might sound otherwise!
