Tony Allen never lets us down – and even though he recorded this set well into the first decade of his "comeback" years, an album like this still has the same sort of fresh, urgent feel that got him noticed again by a whole new generation of fans! An amazing set that documents the early years of the Zamrock scene – the funk and psych informed Afro Rock pioneered by vocalist and African guitar legend Rikki Ililonga and his group Musi-O-Tunya in Zambia from 1973 to 1976 – and compiled beautifully in this great set from Now Again/Stones Throw! It's incredible stuff that blends fuzzed out guitar psychedelia, raw rhythms and brass-heavy funky soul. Ililonga's legacy is represented strongly on the record made by the group he founded, Musi-O-Tunya – who work with electric guitar, bass, sax, western and African drums and percussion – as well as the Zambia album, credited to Rikki Illilonga, in which he sings and plays all instruments except trumpet. The set also includes his Sunshine Love album, in which he sings and plays all instruments except bass and drums – and a it's got a rawer, bluesier psych soul approach overall. Great stuff from global funk phenoms Nomo – deftly blending Afro steeped funk with an astral reach – with more of a spiritual jazz influence and off kilter avant touches! Invisible Cities arrives just about a year since their breakthrough Ghost Rock opened so many doors, and although productivity and consistency have never been a problem with Elliot Bergman & co, we're still pretty awestruck – especially given that Ghost Rock set the bar pretty high! Blazing horns, dynamic rhythms and rapturous percussion galore, with the electric kalimba still defining the group's identity nicely, with lots of sweaty funk, more spacious spiritual jazz atmosphere, and a couple of choice covers – Moondog's "Bumba" gets a bit of Caribbean funk treatment with steel drums, plus a reverent take on Tom Ze's "Ma"! Hypnotic vocals from Yoro Sidibe – a "hunter's singer" from the Wasulu region of Mali – and one who works with a very unique sort of groove! All tracks here feature Sidibe also playing the donso ngoni, a rough harp-like instrument that resonates strongly, and which is supported by some rougher scraping percussion from other players – who occasionally also sing alongside Yoro's lead. The tracks are all long, and tell epic hunting tales – although the language will be lost on most Anglo listeners like us – leaving just the cascadingly rhythmic patters of the music and vocals, which is more than enough to hold our attention! Really hypnotic sounds from Ethiopian singer Kassa Tessema – heard here on two records from the 70s, both of which have a very ancient feel! Kassa has this very deep sound in his voice – a range that really goes down right to the bottom, with less of the higher tones of other Ethiopian instrumentation or singers – and the backings for the records are very spare, often just a bit of krar or harp – used in simple melodic patterns, but which get very compelling as they cycle through in repetition. Some tracks are instrumental, and the booklet also offers translations of the most compelling lyrical passages – on titles that include "Woubye", "Tezeta", "Fanno", "Gelel", "Yemuziqa Moges","Satenaw", and "Antchi Hoy Lene". An unusual collection of mento material from Jamaica – a later document of sounds that were initially the first on the path towards rocksteady and reggae! Back in the late 50s, Bermuda had calypso and Jamaica had mento – a style that was similar, but which had a slightly different rhythmic pattern – one that was fused with influences from American soul as the decade moved on, as the blueprint for ska, rocksteady, and later styles too! These recordings are all from the 70s – handled by producer Sonia Pottinger for her High Note label – and show that even in the era of dub and roots, mento was still going strong in Jamaica – although definitely with more contemporary touches that show the growing influence of reggae back on the older form of music. The set's a great look at this moment in the style – done with the usual huge booklet of notes we love from Doctor Bird, filled with rare images and label scans too – and the 2CD set features 46 tracks in all – full albums by King Vupp, The Jolly Boys, and The Prince Brothers – plus more by Sugar Belly, Count Lasher, Baba Brooks, The Dingle Brothers, Marva Moore, and others.
