Roger FakhrEast Of Any Place ... CD
Habibi Funk (Germany), Late 70s. New Copy ... $14.99 18.99
Some of the most obscure work ever recorded by Lebanese singer/songwriter Roger Fakhr – late 70s recordings that were originally only circulated on tape within a small community of friends and supporters, and material that has a vibe that almost feels like some of the best late 60s material from the American scene! Roger sings in this beautifully moody vocal style that's maybe somewhere between Bill Fay and Fred Neil – and the instrumentation, while gentle, is also well-pointed – so that slight electric elements mix with acoustic guitar in a very cool way, and always with a sense of arrangement and production that really distances these tracks from any sort of home recordings or demos. Plus, vocals are in English throughout – which furthers the Cali vibe of the material – and the whole thing could well be the record that gets the rest of the world to pay attention to Fakhr's overlooked genius! Titles include "Down To My Bones", "You Look So Funny", "Had To See Harry", "Drinking Tea", "Rainhill", "Road Of Farewell", and "East Of Any Place". CD

VariousTogo Soul 2 ... CD
Hot Casa (France), 1970s/1980s. New Copy ... $16.99 23.99 About May 31, 2024
A stunning array of rare sounds from Togo – a tiny West African nation, but home to a real hotbed of grooves in the 70s and 80s! As with the first volume, the music here is a real revelation – sounds very different than those in nearby Nigeria, often with a slight tropical vibe in the rhythms – almost if there were Caribbean currents flowing east to infect the scene Lome with a very unique sound! Guitars are often right down in the rhythms, but in ways that are different than highlife – funkier, with almost a James Brown influence – but one that's been very changed up in the process! Some of the 80s cuts bring in a bit more beats, basslines, and keyboards – but still in really unique ways – and titles include "Misiqui" by Roger Damawuzan, "Agaza Gbona" by Agboti, "Yansama" by Ali Bawa, "Fati Waka" by Mamo Lagbema, "Kissakpiou" by Napo De Mi Amor, "The End Of All" by Deg Dos, "Habie" by Gregoire Lawani, and "Assini" by Palete Wawa. ✨✧ Roger FakhrFine Anyway ... LP
Habibi Funk (Germany), Late 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Beautiful sounds from Roger Fahkr – a Lebanese singer/songwriter who recorded most of this music in the late 70s – but with a sound and style that's every bit as compelling as western talents from the earlier part of the decade! The tunes often begin with voice and acoustic guitar, but usually bring in a bit of keyboards or other elements to expand things slightly, but all while keeping the moody quality of Roger's English-language vocals intact – all with a quality that could easily have this work standing next to some of our favorite recordings by artists like Rodriguez, Terry Callier, or Alzo & Udine! There's an inexplicable quality to all of these cuts – a uniqueness that really lives up to our comparison with those other greats – and the whole pacakge is a huge discovery of an artist who might have been a huge global force, had he had the chance back in the 70s. Titles include "Sad Sad Songs", "My Baby She Is As Down As I Am", "Express Line", "Insomnia Blue", "Lady Rain", "Everybody Is Going Home", "Sitting In The Sun", "The Wizard", "Trip Thru Time", "Gone Away Again", and "Had To Come Back Wet". ✨✧ PedrinhoAleluia ... LP
Mar & Sol (Netherlands), 1978. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A sweet 70s set recorded in Lisbon, but with roots in Cape Verde – the original home of Pedrinho before he recorded this debut album at the age of 18! The tunes all have this joyous, skittish sort of energy – groove that bubble on up from down at the bottom, woven through nicely with lots of fast-riffing guitar – all at a pace that's even more deft than some of the guitar-based grooves from West Africa at the time! Pedrinho sings and plays keyboards – almost always sounding as if he's completely caught up in the grooves himself, and just responding to the motion of the music. Titles include "Ze Maria", "Benfica De Tra Cthapeu", "Chipetite", "Oracao Do Jovem Triste", "Contrato La Banana", "Ei Se Vous Dance", and "Nhos Baxa Nhos Panha". ✨✧ Pedro LimaRecordar E Viver – Antologia Vol 1 – 1976 to 1987 ... CD
Bongo Joe (Switzerland), Late 70s/1980s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A double-length collection of work from Pedro Lima – maybe not the biggest name in global music, but a really key figure in his home nation of Sao Tome E Principe! Pedro's got a voice that's both sweet and down to earth at the same time – perfect for the well-crafted rhythms of the tunes, which are heavy on acoustic percussion and electric guitar on most of these numbers – but also shift slightly as the years move on! Yet much of the music is still nicely spare and free of some of the more polished, commercial modes that were coming into play during the big rise of the world music years – still always with a strong focus on the lyrics and message that made Pedro way more than just a singer on his scene, with a political and cultural legacy that's built up strongly from the tracks on the set. The collection features a few unreleased numbers too – and titles include "Balanca Cunxenca", "Non Conveta Qua", "Glavi Funcon", "Floli Xacla", "Meu", "Subocha", "Ami Cu Manu Mu", "Philomene", "Inen Mina Fleguedja", and "Sueste". ✨✧ VariousWorld Psychedelic Classics 3 – Love's A Real Thing – The Funky Fuzzy Sounds Of West Africa (with download) ... LP
Luaka Bop, Early 70s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A really mind-bending collection of African grooves – one that digs deep into the West African scene of the early 70s – and comes up with a massive batch of tunes that really opens up our understanding of the music! The sound here isn't just 70s Afro Funk – as the tunes include a range of tripped-out styles that make the best use of electric instrumentation, psychedelic production, and important influences from American soul artists at the time. There's some amazing guitar on some of the best tracks – ringing out with a sound that's chromatically complex while also being tripped-out and funky – in a way that complicates the rhythms without totally taking them apart. If you've dug the tunes on previous sets like Africa Funk or Ghana Soundz, this is one to take that sound to the next level – and really open up your ears! Titles include "Keleya" by Moussa Doumbia, "Love's A Real Thing" by The Super Eagles, "Minsato Le Mi Dyihome" by Orchestre Poly-Rhythmo De Cotonou Dahomey, "Porry" by Sorry Bamba, "Allah Wakbarr" by Ofo & The Black Company, "Sanjina" by Orchestre Regional De Kayes, "Ifa" by Tunji Oyelana & The Benders, and "Zinabu" by Bunzu Sounds. ✨✧ Ernesto DjedjeErnesto Djedje – Le Roi Du Ziglibithy (180 gram pressing – with bonus download) ... LP
Analog Africa (Germany), Late 70s. New Copy Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Ernesto Djedje left the planet at a very young age – but thanks to recordings like this, he really left his mark on the music scene in the Ivory Coast – and the larger world of West African music as well! There's a special blend of traditional sounds and contemporary elements going on here – a hybrid that Djedje clearly picked up while working in the French scene earlier in his career, before returning home to make some really amazing records like this! Tracks have a pulsating groove throughout – more a flow directed by the guitar and bass than the heavier sound of Afro Funk – and Djedje's vocals have a raspy charm that grabs you instantly, and which really work well beyond the boundary of language. Titles include "Zigilbithiens", "Golozo", "Bilwana", and "Nini". LP, Vinyl record album

Young Ones Of GuyanaYoung Ones Of Guyana On Tour/Reunion ... LP
BBE (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $22.99 26.98
A pair of albums from this Guyana group – both recorded overseas, and with a really unique sort of vibe! Young Ones Of Guyana On Tour was recorded in 1970, while the group was in London – at the legendary Landsdowne Studios, home to some really groundbreaking jazz at the time – a location that must have left some sort of imprint on the combo, as they work here in a mix of different styles that includes soul, Latin, and even Jamaican modes – often using strong lead guitar upfront, usually peppered with very cool Farfisa organ lines too. Many of the cuts are instrumentals, and some are vocals – and the mix reminds us a lot of the sorts of variety you'd get on a late 60s rocksteady album. Titles include "Liquidator", "Monkey Man", "Express Way", "Love Can Make You Happy", "No More Heartaches", and "Meditation". Reunion was recorded in Toronto in 1973 – after the group took a hiatus from recording for a bit, to reemerge here with a style that's definitely matured for the time! The organ has shifted from Farfisa to Hammond, but still used in these nice lean lines – and the vocals are more prominent, and maybe more soulful too – especially when the group take on some American soul tracks from the time. Titles include "Guitar Man", "Hooked On Me", "Poppa Joe", "Oh Girl", "If Loving You Is Wrong", "Suriname", "Ain't No Sunshine", and "Lean On Me". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ VariousWagadu Grooves – The Hypnotic Sound Of Camara 1987 to 2016 (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Hot Mule (France), Late 1980s/1990s/2000s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Beautiful sounds from a very unique label – one started in Paris by a Malian merchant in the 80s, in order to both present sounds from his homeland, and all of the wonderful new variations that were taking place on the cross-cultural scene in France! The body of work is partly a compelling document of culture in diaspora, but more importantly presents a nice range of grooves with a vibe that's very different than mainstream music from the time – especially some of the too-commercialized records that were shifting big numbers on the world music scene. Most of these tracks have a very down to earth presentation – professional, but never overdone – mixing older styles with electric instrumentation and just a touch of studio sweetening, but hardly much at all. Titles include "Duna" by Halima Kissima Toure, "Ayebo" by Hadja Soumano, "Bolinaame" by Diaby Doua, "Tenedo" by Ami Traore, "Alla Da Fo Na" by Halima Kissima Toure, "Soso" by Mah Kouyate, "Nogome" by Lassana Hawa Cissokho, and "Kori" by Mamadou Tangoudia. Most tracks originally issued on cassette or digital – and appear here on vinyl for the first time ever! LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes a big booklet of notes, too!)
