Gyedu-Blay Ambolley11th Street Sekondi ... CD
Agogo (Germany), 2019. New Copy ... $14.99 18.99
A killer contemporary set from Gyedu Blay Ambolley – one of the Afro Funk heroes of the 70s, still sounding fantastic after all these years! The album was all recorded at Ambolley's Simigiwa Studios in Ghana – and arrangements, instrumentation, and production are all in a very classic mode – with the leader on tenor and vocals, stretching out with this nicely raspy quality that's a great evolution in his sound – as if he's found a way to put even more feeling and experience into the sound that he gives us! The rest of the lineup features keyboards, trumpet, tenor, alto, guitar, and plenty of percussion – on titles that include "Black Woman", "I No Dey Talk I Do De Lie", "Ignorance", "Little Small Girl", "Sunkwa", "Who Go Pay", "Brokos", and "Who Made Your Body Like Dat". ✨✧ Franklin BoukakaL'Immortel Franklin Boukaka – The 60s Rumba Revolution In Congo (3CD set) ... CD
Fremeaux & Associates (France), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 3CD ... $19.99 29.99
A really deep dive into the lost legacy of Franklin Boukaka – a singer who really helped revolutionize music in the Congo during the 60s, recording a heck of a lot of great tracks before a brutal murder took him from the planet in the early 70s! At some level, the work here is to Congolese music what some of the more playful township songs were to the South African scene – a new style, but one that also had a really universal sort of appeal – contemporary and catchy, yet still nice and lean, and never overproduced in any sort of European way! There's plenty of numbers here that show that strong 60s Congo love of Afro-Cuban elements – and the 3CD package also features work done with Manu Dibango, and the group Cercul Jazz. Titles include "Pasi Na Komona", "Succes Cercul", "Na Welate", "Dia Bikola", "Honole", "O Nongone Mba Mulema", "Na Ye Na Lisano", "Yanga", "Longwa Na Nzela", "Nitouani Yam Bi", "Awana Divorce Na Bana", and "Les Ecoliers". KOGZone 6 – Agege ... CD
Heavenly Sweetness/Pura Vida (France), 2022. New Copy ... $14.99 19.99
The first-ever solo album from Kweku of Ghana – who you've likely heard as KOG on projects with Nubiyan Twist, Onipa, and others – really sounding great here with a colorful vibe that really fits the image on the cover! The rhythms percolate nicely throughout – lean beats mixed with live percussion and some jazzier instrumentation – only occasionally hitting more familiar West African modes, as KOG borrows bits of influence from his colleagues in the UK – and works in all these cool currents of contemporary soul as well! Titles include "Mayedeen", "Like A Tree", "Shidaa", "Lord Knows", "Ayinye", "Ebeneezer", and "No Way" – which features guest work from the legendary Gyedu Blay Ambolley! CD

Mauricio Maestro with Nana VasconcelosUpside Down ... CD
Far Out (UK), 2011. New Copy ... $7.99 16.99
A contemporary set, but one that's unlike any other recent Brazilian recording we can think of – given the very unique vibe that Mauricio Maestro is going for! You might know Mauricio from his mid 70s work with Joyce on Visions Of Dawn – and although this set is a recent recording, it has a same sort of classic feel overall. The sound here has deep rhythms and folksy touches – a warm acoustic mode, but topped with some slight electricity and larger arrangements – a bit like some of the more creative sounds in the Brazilian underground during the post-Tropicalia years – yet with a richness that takes it much farther too! Maestro handled the arrangements, and he brings in a jazz-tinged quality that's not unlike the Milton Nascimento generation – yet the overall approach is earthier too, and vocals are handled by Mauricio, percussionist Nana Vasconcelos, and Kay Lyra – swirled up with a bit of light string backings that really help the record soar to the skies! We'd rank this one right up there with classics from the 70s by Joyce or Edu Lobo – but we also recognize that it's very much it's own record too. Titles include "Jungle Bells", "Agua Clara", "Canto Do Paje", "Todos Os Santos", "Ciclo Da Vida", "Ouvindo Estrelas", "Upside Down", and "Horizonte". (Brazil, Global Grooves) CD

Negarit BandOrigins ... CD
Buda (France), 2023. New Copy ... $13.99 15.99
A really great set of Ethio jazz from this contemporary combo – one who draw inspiration from the golden years of the 70s, but who bring plenty of individual twists to the music of their own! There's a lean, focused style here that's totally great – and an emphasis on jazz instrumentation over romping rhythms – sometimes topped with vocals, other times done in a way that really lets the solo instruments take center stage! Some tracks are nice and long, and we might like those the best – and titles include "Lalibela", "Ethiopia Danosae", "Kaffa Chafo", "Guwayla", "Esay Naiye", "Saint Yared", "Filae Goferae", and "Arba Minch". Nomade OrchestraNomade Orchestra ... CD
Far Out (Brazil), 2016. New Copy ... $7.99 16.99
A Brazilian group, but one who play with a wonderfully spiritual sound – with currents of jazz that take us back to the early 70s years of Strata East and Impulse Records, but given perhaps a bit more of a contemporary twist! The large lineup definitely lives up to the orchestra in their name – with a great mix of reed instruments, plus keyboards, guitar, bass, drums, and additional percussion – all used in these ways that start in jazz, then pick up a globe's worth of musical context along the way – not just Brazilian elements, but some Afro-Cuban and Afro Funk modes as well – but used in ways that are relatively unique, and which really give these guys their own sort of special flavor. Titles include "Samurai", "Sonhos De Toquio", "Bedum", "Doce Agonia", "Drago Do Mar", "Morning Birds", "Humaita", and "Garuda". CD

Rim Kwaku Obeng & The BelieversToo Tough/I'm Not Going To Let You ... CD
Sum Sum/BBE (UK), 1983. New Copy ... $9.99 14.99
Wonderfully groovy work from Rim Kwaku Obeng – an artist with African roots, but working here in the San Francisco scene of the early 80s – where he's clearly picked up a very international vibe in his music! Rim definitely plays some traditional percussion on the tracks, but there's also a more contemporary funky club approach too – a mixing of modes that's totally great, and which almost represents an 80s step forward for the already-great Bay Area soul vibe of the 70s! The first half of the set features material from the Too Tough EP – which has very cool female vocals, both a lead and a chorus – the latter of whom move around with the rhythms in this totally great way that almost feels like some New York cuts from the Danceteria generation. The second half of the set loses the female singers, but is still every bit as wonderful as the first – with these long grooves from Rim & The Believers that have the percussion, basslines, and guitars criss-crossing in even more amazing ways. Titles include "Shine The Ladies", "Love Me For Real", "I'm Not Going To Let You", "Peace Of Mind", and "I'm A Song Writer". CD

WaajuGrown ... CD
Olindo (UK), 2020. New Copy ... $8.99 13.99
A really great combo from the contemporary London scene – one who work with jazz instrumentation, but in ways that echo a variety of rhythmic styles – elements of North and West African modes, and touches of Caribbean as well – but all done with a lean, instrumental style! The group's led by drummer Ben Brown, who plays some equally great percussion next to Ernesto Maricholes – in rhythms that also get plenty of action from the guitar of Tal Jones and bass of Joe Downard. Tenor from Sam Rapley really sets the tunes on fire – often providing a raspy edge that's in a nice contrast to the rhythms, adding a real current of soul, and also opening up the sonic palette of the grooves! Titles include "Grown", "Wassoulou", "Time's Got A Hold", "Rollando", "Moleman", and "Listening Glasses". (Jazz, Global Grooves) CD

VariousClub Coco – Ahora – The Latin Sound Of Now ... CD
Bongo Joe (Switzerland), 2023. New Copy ... $20.99 23.99
Coco Maria hosts a mighty cool radio show on BBC Worldwide – one that showcases all sorts of unusual Latin music hybrids that have come up over the years – including a good range of contemporary music, such as the tracks featured on this really well-done compilation! The music here has echoes of older Colombian, Tropical, and Afro-Cuban modes – but often served up with really inventive arrangements and instrumentation that turn things completely around – not in any sort of Latin remix style, but with more of a groove that shows what some of the more unusual Latin hybrid combos have been working on! Titles include "Children's Favourite" by Guess What, "Lepidoptera" by Iko Cherie, "El Bravo" by Candeleros, "Vamonos Cocos" by Raz Olsher, "Off The Groove" by Ronald Snijders, "Always Ready To Smile" by Juan Hundred, "Seguimos Sonriendo" by Acid Coco, and "Sacudete" by Lola's Dice. VariousColombian Soul – Compiled By Bagar aka Tricky D ... CD
BBE (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $9.99 18.98
A completely different side of Colombian music than you'd know from Discos Fuentes and some of the other mainstream outlets from that scene – as the tracks here are all from the contemporary underground, and represent a really rich flowering of creative grooves and soulful modes! In truth, most of this work might hail from any hip spot in the global underground – save for the fact that the lyrics are often in Spanish, and many tunes have some slight reference to older musical modes – sometimes an acoustic element mixed in with more electronic instrumentation, sometimes a more direct reference! The quality of the tracks is wonderful – a really strong surprise to our ears, as we never would have discovered this music otherwise – and it represents a really great alternative so some of the more staid, often boring attempts to create a global fusion of elements in the mainstream. Titles include "Cada Paso" by Liannia, "Cumbia Lobina (ext mix)" by Dragao featuring Nidia Gongora, "Aquazero" by Systema Solar featuring Pedro Ramaya, "Oyele" by Jimena Angel, "Cuando Canto Grito" by Cerrero featuring Lucia Pulido, "El Leopardo" by El Leopardo, "Mujer Divina" by Salsangroove, "Gualayo" by Radio Rebelde Soundsystem, "La Negra Y El Fantasma" by Bareto, "Nunca Termina" by David Caneva Akle, "Manana Sera" by Ruzto, and "De Donde Vengo Yo" by Los Transatlanticos featuring Pilar Matarola. ✨✧ Guelewar Band Of BanjulWarteef Jigeen ... CD
PMG (Austria), 1981. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A wonderful fusion of traditional roots and contemporary funk – handled perfectly by this legendary Gambian band! The groove is unique – with earthy percussion and haunting vocals mixed with more 70s-styled funk instrumentation – but often in a way that's as interested in sonic experimentation as it is in search of a groove – an approach that really sets these guys apart from most of their contemporaries, and which has made the Guelewar Band's records get some great attention in recent years. The group call their approach "Afro-Manding Sound" – and titles include "Warteef Jigeen", "NTC The Gambia", "Mamadu Bitike", "President Diawara", and "Jilanna". CD

✨✧ Bola JohnsonMan No Die ... CD
Vampi Soul (Spain), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 2 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A stunning collection of work from Bola Johnson – a key figure on the scene in Lagos in the years before Fela Kuti and King Sunny Ade! Johnson's style here really shows Nigerian music at the crossroads – upbeat elements of early highlife informing the rhythms with plenty of lean guitar lines and percussion, but topped with all these great jazzy elements over the top – almost as if Johnson is bringing forth an older style of R&B inspiration in the horns, while letting things sound very contemporary in the rhythms! The mix is a bit like some of the wonderful hybrids that were happening on the London scene in the late 50s and early 60s – and the lyrics here often share a similar mix of politics and humor. The package is long overdue – and collects together rare early singles on Philips, with a great set of notes and other titles. Titles include "Somebody Find Me Trouble", "Oh My Baby Josephine", "Obiriki Aye N Yilo", "Koto Ye O", "Buroda Mase", "Kilode", "Mimo Mimo Loluwo", "Lagos Special", "Meme Latori", "Nigeria Drive On The Right", and "Pappa Rebecca Special ". Habibi Funk (Germany), 2023. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A cool contemporary set from Beirut producer Charif Megarbane – a set served up in a style he bills as "Lebrary" – which is a combination of Lebanese elements with a classic sound library aesthetic! The tunes here are short, funky, and colorful – and almost feel like some 70s studio take on expected Mid East musical modes – with the exotic and the groovy shaking hands in some very cool styles throughout! There's plenty of wonderful grooves on the record, with a nicely varied sense of instrumentation – and titles include "Shanklish", "Ma Ward", "Abou Boutros", "Chez Mounir", "Pas De Dialogue", "Soul El Ahad", "Tarator", "Ya Salam", "A Parking Lot By The Sea", and "Pale Baleine". ✨✧ VariousE Soul Cultura Vol 2 ... CD
Mr Bongo (UK), 1970s/2023. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
We really loved the first volume in this series, and this second entry maybe goes even deeper into the unique territory of the collection – a genre that's maybe all its own, with a really cool blend of older tracks and contemporary numbers, all served up with a laidback sort of vibe! There's plenty of soul in the mix, but often from a global perspective – and those cuts are mixed in with more 21st century-styled tracks, which makes for a very cool blend of material. Titles include "Baby This Love I Have" by Avis, "Malibu Nites" by Frank Hatchett, "DE 108" by Bach Revolution, "We May Be Cattle But We All Got Names" by Michael De Albuquerque, "Marimba" by Yargo, "Play A Sweet Rhythm On Them Drums" by Okyerama Asante & Black Fire, "Shove Piggy Shove" by LFO, "Lost Children" by Veronica Mickie, and "Storm (Arp Duppy Chip mix)" by Rare Silk.
