✨✧ VariousIstanbul 70 Vols 1 to 6 – Psych, Disco, Folk Edits by Baris K ... LP
Nublu, 1970s/2023. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $46.99 49.99
An expanded version of this famous series of funky tracks from the Turkish scene – a set that pulls up plenty of gems from the past, then has all their funky bits made even funkier through the talents of Baris K! If you've dug funky Turkish tracks and Arabesk rock from the 70s, you'll get the sound of the set – but know that thanks to Baris' work, the whole thing's an all-killer, no-filler collection – with cuts that include "Cemalim" by Erkin Koray, "Ayrilik" by Edip Akbayaram, "Ikimiz Bir Fidaniz" by Kamuran Akkor, "Hal Hal" by Nazan Soray, "Yaz Gazeteci" by Deriyoklar, "Derman Bulunmaz" by Ersen & Dadaslar, "Nem Alacak Felek Benim" by Cem Karaca, "Donme Dolap" by Modern Folk Uclusu & Aysegul Aldinic, and "Disko Kebap" by Urfali Babi. ✨✧ Erol BuyukburcHop Dedik ... LP
Pharaway Sounds (Spain), 1976. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Erol Buyukburc is dressed like a geeky spaceman on the back cover – which is maybe why he used a bikini-clad woman on the front – and he definitely sounds like he's out of the world on some of the cooler tracks on this rare debut album from the 70s! The music comes from the same scene as Baris Manco and Erkin Koray – and is maybe a bit less psych-influenced than both of those singers, but still has a wonderful criss-crossing of east and west in the Turkish pop modes of the time! Keyboards have a thin quality that often works well with the wangly guitars – and echo comes into the production at many moments, really helping to cook up a great sound together. Titles include "Dandini", "Bile Bile Lades", "Guz Sarkisi", "Hep Sen Varsin", "Hop Dedik", "Dedim Dedi", and "Civciv Cikacak Kuscikacak". LP, Vinyl record album

Baba Commandant & The Mandingo BandSonbonbela ... CD
Sublime Frequencies, 2023. New Copy ... $15.99 16.99
Baba Commandant serves up a wonderful blend here – tight Afro Funk mixed with rootsier elements from mandingue – all at a level that really makes the album stand out from the pack! There's some especially great performances on ngoni and balafon, both instruments that get some key placement on the album's leaner tracks – which have the fuller sound of the driving numbers step back slightly, but all without ever losing the groove! The recording quality is great – never too polished, and the music is put forth in a way that makes the whole thing feel like some under-discovered nugget from years past – with titles that include "Wariko", "Semayala", "Afro Mandingo", "Serejugu", and "Chasser Les Sachets". Erkin KorayMechul – Singles & Rarities ... CD
Sublime Frequencies, 1970s. New Copy ... $15.99 19.99
A great collection of non-LP material and other rare gems from one of the key figures in the Turkish psychedelic scene – an amazing artist who managed to take rootsy themes and melodies, and mix them with some really heavy duty guitar – all to create a freaky, fuzzy batch of music that forever changed his scene! Much of Koray's music never got circulation outside of the Mid-East back in the day, and we've been lucky enough to have 21st Century interest lead to a great wave of reissues – as Koray's albums have come out in various packages over the years – leading to this really well-done collection of 45rpm-only tracks, and even more obscure music too! Titles include "Mechul", "Kendim Ettim Kendim Buldom,", "Gun Dogmuyor", "Goca Dunya", "Kraller", "Cumbur Cemaat", "Hadi Hadi Ordan", "Dusunus", "Olmayinca Olmuyor" and "Sevdigim". Dr Pete Larson & Cytotoxic Nyatiti BandDamballah ... LP
Dagoretti, 2024. New Copy ... $18.99 24.99
Pete Larson learned how to play the classic Kenyan nyatiti instrument in the early days of this century – and years later, he recorded this fantastic blend of regional sounds and psychedelic modes – very different than classic nyatiti recordings from the 20th Century! There's a fuzzy, freaky approach to the music that often sets the nyatiti up in Tuareg-like territory – mixing its spare lute-like strings with fuzzier guitar, bass, percussion, and just a bit of keyboards – all spun out in modal jams that really take off once they get going – all with an approach that's almost as if Spacemen 3 had discovered Kenyan music! Titles include "Damballah", "Saba Saba", "Korona", "Nyagweno", and "Cool Breeze". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Los Saicos (aka Saicos)Demolician – The Complete Recordings 1965 to 1966 ... LP
Munster (Spain), Mid 60s. New Copy ... $26.99
An incredible batch of prime garage rock era nuggets from the Peruvian scene – fuzzy gems by the Saicos! The Saicos bring a sense of menace to these tunes – with a guitar tone touched with an eerie vibe, and lead vocals that are really piercing and gravelly in that instills this primordial edge that needs to be heard to be believed – but that balance it off with some moddish, British invasion grooves, too. The overall sound manages to blend both the heavy menace of cult acts like the Monks and the Seeds with the tunefulness of the Animals – and clear precursor the garage punk for decades to come! Titles include "Come On (Ven Aqui)", "Ana", "Demolicion", "Lonely Star (Estrella Solitaria)", "Cememterio", "Te Amo", "Fugitivo De Alcatraz", "Salvaje", "El Entierro De Los Gatos", "Besando A Otra" and "Intensamente". Comes with a great booklet, too! (Rock, Global Grooves) LP, Vinyl record album

Mike MakhalemelePeacemaker ... LP
As Shams/We Are Busy Bodies (Canada), 1975. New Copy (reissue)... $27.99 29.99
Saxophonist Mike Makhalemele is in great company here – blowing these long, soulful lines in a combo that has plenty of mellow grooves – keyboards from Jabu Nkosi and bass from Sipho Gumede – both players who really know how to lay back, open up a groove, and let Mike do all the rest with his horn! The approach is a more stripped-down take on American soul fusion styles of the time – never too smooth or commercial, and definitely with some elements of older South African jazz in the mix, although in subtle ways. The main focus is on the tenor, which is great – on titles that include "My Thing", "15th Avenue", "Peace Train", "End Of The Road", and "Going West". (Jazz, Global Grooves) LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Reebop (Anthony Reebop Kwaku Bah)Anthony Reebop Kwaku Bah ... CD
Jet (Austria), 1971. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A killer set from percussionist Anthony Reebop Kwaku Bah – one done with the same sort of genre-crossing vibe as some of his work with the hipper members of the British rock scene – but at a level that's even cooler and groovier than his album for Island around the same time! The set's more of a jazz outing overall – and Reebop's tight skills are matched with a host of Swedish musicians – a lineup that includes Maffy Falay on trumpet, Ulf Andersson on tenor and flute, Bobo Stenson on electric piano, Jan Schaffer on guitar, and Rune Carlsson on drums! Tracks are long, and very groovy – often a bit of funk mixed with freer, more expressive passages – not unlike some of Don Cherry's experiments on the same scene at the time! Schaffer's guitar gets some good placement, and sounds even better here than usual – on cuts that include "Funkum", "Kwaku's Thing", "Africa", "Lovin You Baby", and "200 To 500 Years Ago". CD
