African Songs (UK), Mid 1970s. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Great early work from King Sunny Ade – billed as "volume 12" – but a set that's way before his bigger 80s fame on Island Records! The title cut takes up all of side one – and side two features shorter tracks that include "Gbogbo Wa L'Ope", "Asiko Ni", and "Ori Olowo". LP, Vinyl record album

AntibalasSecurity ... CD
Anti, 2007. Used ... $2.99
An incredible leap forward for Antibalas – a record filled with bolder sounds and deeper grooves than ever before – and one that even tops the already-great sound of their previous albums! The mix of modes here is really amazing – some of the group's familiar Afro-Funk at the core, but also a much wider range of influences too – bits of dub, choppy Latin guitar, Sun Ra-like organ lines, and gamelon-styled metal bits – all wrapped together in a groove that has some particularly hypnotic undertones! The set was produced by John McIntire, who's no doubt a big influence on the sound here – and the record really shatters any expectations you might have from the group – proof that they're way more than just another Afro Funk combo. Titles include "Beaten Metal", "Filibuster X", "Sanctuary", "Hilo", "War Hero", "ICE", and "Age". CD

Bacao Rhythm & Steel BandBRSB ... CD
Big Crown, 2024. New Copy ... $12.99 15.99
Excellent work from one of the funkiest steel bands around – a totally hip combo who just seem to be getting better and better with each new release! This time around, they've stepped up the beats even more than before – mixing their 70s funk and steel drum work with just a slight current from hip hop production – all of which almost makes you feel like Wu-Tang made a trip to the Caribbean, then came back with these tapes as a result! There's also some additionally cool touches in the horns – used with maybe some slight Ethio jazz inflections at points – alongside other elements that really help move the Bacao aesthetic forward in a mighty nice way. Titles include "Hotline Bling", "Grilled", "How We Do", "Hazy Memories", "In The Crosshairs", "The Champion's Walk", and a very cool take on the "Stranger Things Theme"! CD

Victor DemeVictor Deme (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Chapa Blues/Heavenly Sweetness (France), 2007. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $28.99 32.99
An album that became an instant legend in global music circles – the recorded debut of Victor Deme, a guitarist and singer who'd been working in his native Burkina Faso for over 30 years before getting the chance to step inside a studio! The turn "studio" might be a loose one here – as the album was recorded on a four track, in a distant space in the country – but has a vibrancy that beats most other bigger label releases of the time – thanks to a tremendous power in Deme's vocals, which have a raspy presence that grabs you far beyond just an understanding of language – and which are often matched by guitar work from Issouf Diabate, who inflects these subtle bluesy elements that spark new colors in the songs, but in a nicely understated way. A record with a very unique sound, and a lasting classic – with titles that include "Dankan", "Tama Ngogon", "Dala Mogoya", "Djon Maya", "Toungan", "Cherie", "Burkina Mousso", and "Djarabi". ✨✧ MatadiDance My Love ... LP
Choc/La Freak (France), 1978. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
The only album ever issued by Matadi – a hip French group from those key post-colonial years on the Parisian scene, and one who serve up this wonderful blend of late 70s club and West African roots! The style is almost a few years ahead of its time – especially when compared to some of the groups who would break big on that early 80s moment of global circulation of new Afro-styled sounds – especially when some of the keyboards almost seem to hint at electro styles from years to come! Yet the overall approach is nice and warm, very 70s funky on most tracks – upbeat, and laced with guitar solos from Sammy Massamba, who put the whole thing together – on titles that include "Afro", "My Own Style", "Lode", "Viva Afrika", "Bola Bola", and "Timawok". ✨✧ Moonrakers BandMoonrakers Band ... LP
EMI/Afrodelic (Italy), 1974. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A funky psychedelic nugget from the Nigerian scene of the 70s – a record that's got more of a lean small group take on some of the bigger ensemble modes of the period, in a way that really seems to give the Moonrakers Band lots of flexibility with their sound! Some numbers might be a bit more guitar-heavy, others will have more organ – and the rhythms shift between rock, funk, and maybe even a bit of inspiration from Jamaican music – as the group serve up lyrics that are mostly in English, but with a definite offbeat vibe. There's occasional currents that resonate with Zamrock work of the decade, while other moments are straighter Afro Funk – on titles that include "Cut Your Coat According To Your Size", "We Got To Live", "What We Did Today Is Gone", "Wait For Me", "Little Sister Of Line", and "Enia Se Pele". Tribo MassahiEstrelando Embaixador ... CD
Goma Gringa (Brazil), 1971. New Copy ... $14.99 19.99
An amazing bit of funk from early 70s Brazil – an ultra-rare album, but one that almost beats some of the bigger Brazilian classics of the time! The recording has a very unusual approach – a non-stop blend of songs on each side – which makes for long, continuous tracks that mix together funk, jazz, samba, and other rootsy elements – often with a lot of percussion at the core, but also featuring electric bass, and some nice flute too! Lead singer Embaixador has this deep, rich sound – which is then countered by a vocal group, ala samba – and the overall approach is definitely in the deepest, hippest modes of the samba soul generation – and much more unbridled than more conventional albums. The whole thing's wonderful – and titles include "Walk By Jungle", "Dandara", "Fareua", "Oan", "Pae Joao", "Madrugada Sem Luar", and "Menina Da Janela". (Brazil, Global Grooves) CD

✨✧ VariousA Moi La Liberte – Early Electronic Rai – Algerie 1983 to 1990 ... CD
Born Bad (France), 1980s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A wonderfully well-done collection – one that brings together some of the more hard-hitting tracks from the early days of Algerian rai music – cuts that stand in a really strong contrast to the more polished mode that showed up on record charts during the big years of world music! This isn't the music of the major labels and associated imprints – and instead, almost all the cuts here were issued on small cassette-only releases, which almost seems to be the perfect format for the lo-fi approach of the cuts – often just beats, keyboards, and slight instrumentation – topped by vocals that are incredibly expressive, even beyond the boundaries of language – and which soar out in a wonderful way! The leaner instrumentation only seems to enforce the strength of the singers – in ways that didn't always happen with later rai – and the set brings together 14 rare tracks, with work from Cheb Hader, Nordine Staifi, Chaba Ahmed, Tchier Abdelgani, Cheb Hindi, Houari Benchenet, Chab Mohamed Sghir, Benchenet, and Chab Hamouda. ✨✧ VariousCosmic Discotheque Vol 6 – 12 Dancefloor Groovy Disco Gems From The 70s ... LP
Naughty Rhythm (Italy), Mid 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
This great series keeps on going – and it seems that with each new volume, the realm of Cosmic Discotheque just keeps on getting bigger! As with previous volumes, the feel here isn't standard disco – and the tracks are upbeat, but have a variety of fresh approaches that go far past the mainstream modes of the late 70s clubs – some with European production and instrumentation that really changes things up, some from easy listening sources going for the disco scene, some with global influences stripped down for grooves, all with an approach that will have you digging this volume as much as previous entries! Titles include "Bumerang" by Petr A Pavel ORM, "Hypno Dance" by Who's Who, "I Love Paris" by Zamulo, "Ride The Sky" by Mystic Moods, "Super Woman (inst)" by Surprise Band, "Griffo" by Boro, "Funk Disco Sounds" by The Yetians, "Sugar (part 2)" by Freddie Cannon, "Caliente" by Caliente Orchestra, "Surprise" by Fantastic Soul Invention, and "Shaba Da Ba Dam" by Obah. ✨✧ VariousOriginal Sound Of Mali ... CD
Mr Bongo (UK), 1970s/Early 80s. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the best collections of music from Mali that we've ever heard – and a set that nicely gets past some of the overdone cliches of that scene, to really focus on the kind of overlooked 70s gems that showcase sides of the music that are funky, jazzy, and plenty soulful throughout! There's a fast-flowing vibe here that's linked a lot more closely to Nigerian sounds of the 70s than you might expect – music that's different than some of the bluer tones of bigger Malian artists that get more global exposure – and which showcase a huge explosion of sounds during one of the nation's most fervent cultural moments! The focuses on music that's upbeat, righteous, and plenty positive – work from some of the best groups on the scene of the time, who were urging each other on to find newly joyous means of expression. Titles include "Fama Allah" by Idrissa Soumaoro Et L'Eclipse De L'Ija, "Fadinga Kouma" by Zani Diabate Et Let Super Djata Band, "Komangi Bela" by Alou Vane & Daouda Sangare, "Mandjou" by Salif Keita & Ambassadeurs International, "Moudilo" by Rail BAnd, "Mangan" by Super Tentemba Jazz, "Yayoroba" by Sory Bamba, "Worodara" by Super Djata BAnd, "M'Bouram Mousso" by Les Ambassadeurs Du Motel De Bamako, and "Nissodia" by Idrissa Soumaoro Et L'Eclipse De L'Ija. ✨✧ VariousSaturday Night – South African Disco Pop Hits 1981 to 1987 ... CD
Cultures Of Soul, Mid 80s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Excellent work from the South African scene of the 80s – music that maybe provides a pathway to the new freedom to come, thanks to a joyous, upbeat sense of spirit – one that's equally wonderful all these many years later! The cuts here are all clubby, but less in the disco mode that you'd guess from the title – as styles include a fair bit of influences from both the New York and European scenes, especially some of those cross-cultural elements that might have been coming out of places like Paris, or the downtown clubs in New York! Vocals are mostly in English, and the tunes are heavy on basslines, beats, and keyboards – but often have a much warmer, more soulful vibe than some of the tinnier South African synth cuts of the period – in a mode that makes the whole thing equally appealing to any fan of 80s soul from around the globe. Titles include "You & Me" by Margino, "Good Vibes" by Hot Soul Singers, "No No Senor" by Brenda & The Big Dudes, "Let's Get It On" by Supa Frika, "Ea Kgiba Ngoale" by Black Fire, "Ambiguously The Same" by Soundburger, "Saturday Night Special" by Varikweru, "Love Satisfaction" by Supa Frika, and "Holiday" by Margino.
