Fantastic funk from the Colemine label – a company who've given us plenty of great albums over the years, but who seem especially well-tuned to the funky 45! Along with Daptone, Big Crown, and a few others, Colemine is one of the labels who turn out top-shelf 7" singles again and again – most of which are in limited pressings, disappear fast, and are sometimes pretty expensive if you can find them! Stunningly great compilation of rare jazz tracks from the East German state-run Amiga label. The tracks, which span the dates in the title, were selected by the group Jazzanova for Compost Records, and the material has the same sort of uptempo jazzy sound as some of the best records on Compost. Far from the heavy dirgey sound you might expect from East Germany in the 60's, most of this stuff's surprisingly light, lyrical, and very groovy. There's loads of wonderful modal tracks that you'll never find on original release, and the album is an essential peek at a jazz culture that's even fairly hard to approach by serious collectors! The notes are good, and the compilation includes work by Manfred-Ludwig Sextett, Theo Schumann Combo, Werner Pfuller Quintett, Modern Jazz Big Band '65, and Orchester Klaus Lenz. You may not know the names, but trust us, this stuff's great, and well worth dipping into! CD

Funk from Belgium? Believe it or not, stranger things have happened – and we can promise that if you played these tracks back to back with more familiar grooves from other 70s sources, you'd quickly find that these Belgian grooves are right up there with the best of the bunch! A very cool assortment of contemporary groups from the Polish scene – served up here in a package that's different than some of the more avant Polish material that seems to get wider circulation – and delivered with a richness that's sure to have us looking for more work from each of the groups in the set! At some level, the material here echoes recent London jazz traditions – as the work often mixes in some electric elements with acoustic instrumentation – never overly mixed or processed, and balanced by some straighter jazz contributions on a few tracks as well – all of which makes for a very vivid palette of sounds, and a surprising amount of richness from these under-discovered acts.
