The genius sound of the TK Records label, taken to a whole new level – as some of the coolest club classics from that legendary Miami label are served up here in a host of new edits by contemporary talents! ✨✧ VariousBoogieland Chapter 1 – French Grooves ... CD
Universal (France), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A very cool look at a lost legacy in French music – disco and club grooves from the late 70s and early 80s, most of which never got any play at all on our side of the Atlantic! The tracks here mostly go way beyond the obvious choices of Cerrone and Kongas, and often have a playful approach to the music that has French vocals stepping out with catchy, groovy, and sometimes sexy lyrics – all set to rhythms that shift up nicely, and also move past some of the more standard Euro disco modes that were usually the main export of the period! There's not too much in the way of history in the notes – and we'd love to read more – but the song choices are great, very fresh – and include "Palace Hotel (ext)" by Preface, "Quand Tu Danses" by Micky Milan, "Chante Avec Moi" by Herbert Leonard, "Je Ne Veux Pas Rentrer Chez Moi Seule (single version)" by Agathe & Regrets, "Do You Speak French" by Night School, "Homosexualis Discothecus" by Raymond Alessandrini & Jean Yanne, "Visa Pour Aimer (ext)" by Plaisir, "Get Funk" by Black White & Co, and "Wake Up & Move Funk" by Eddy Rosemond. ✨✧ VariousDaniel Vangarde – The Vaults of Zagora Records Mastermind 1971 to 1984 ... CD
Because (France), 1970s/Early 80s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Really cool cuts from the French club scene of the 70s – a weird and wonderful assortment of sounds that all came from producer Daniel Vangarde and his Zagora Record label – a place where all sorts of criss-crossing styles could work together in a really wonderful way! Some moments have cool moogy electronics, others take off from funky French soundtrack productions, and others echo the currents of soul and global music that was getting a chance to try something new in the French studios – clearly given plenty of the right inspiration from Vangarde himself! Most of these cuts never got release in the US, and the selection of tracks is wonderful – a very fresh take on territory we thought we knew already – on selections that include "Midemman (Theme Midem 74)" by The Lovelets, "Dancin Machine" by Who's Who", "I'm Looking For Jeremy" by Soul Iberica Band, "Laugh" by La Boca, "Voyager II (12" version)" by Starbow, "Moog Jealousy" by The Electronic System, "Des Que T'As Dit Disco T'As Tout Dit (ext)" by Rocky & Vandella, "Kono Samourai" by Yamasuki, "Greek Girls" by The Great Disco Bouzuki Band, "Let Me Love You Tonight" by Vicky Edimo, "Come To America (disco inst)" by Gibson Brothers, "La Nuit Des Requins" by La Compagnie Creole, "AIE (A Mwana)" by Black Blood, and "La Poursuite" by Daniel Vangarde himself. ✨✧ VariousDiscophilia Belgica – Next Door Disco & Local Spacemusic From Belgium 1975 to 1987 ... CD
Sdban (Belgium), Late 70s/1980s. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
A European disco world that's ripe for rediscovery – one that's much more obscure than better-known club work from Germany, France, and Italy – but which may well be even groovier than the work from those three scenes! The package is a great complement to some of the funk and jazz sets on the Sdban label – and like those, it really digs deep – to uncover a vast array of music from the small nation – which was clearly a hotbed of groovy activity in the 70s, at a level that none of us realized at the time! The tunes here mix together funk and pop, soul and disco – all in ways that criss-cross strongly with more familiar modes of the period – but often have an offbeat quality, and sometimes a surprising sense of humor that comes through in the mostly English lyrics in the lead. 2CD set features 30 tracks – and titles include "Ethereo Disco" by R Roland, "King Kong" by Carl Watson, "Baby Won't You Turn Me On" by Charles Watson, "Sexy" by Lovedream, "La Gomme" by L2, "Cool & Get Up" by Quartz, "I'm Free" by Steve, "Groovin To The Music" by Flame, "Queen To The Pharoah" by Marianne, "Feel So Glad" by Dan Davis, "Ivro De Vie" by Kevin Moraine, "Be My Love Tonight" by CC Band, "Strange How You Move" by Venus, and "Bubblegum" by Bubble. VariousFresh From Finland – Now's The Time – Best Of Suomi Jazz Vol 4 ... LP
Cadillac (UK), 2022. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $14.99 19.99
A really wonderful overview of sounds from the contemporary jazz scene in Finland – put together with a fantastic ear for the heady grooves and really fresh solo modes that have been bristling up on the scene of late – all of which really come together in the impeccable track selection on the set! Most of these tracks have a highly rhythmic pulse, but at a level that's very different from more familiar jazz funk or fusion – with percussion and basslines that are often nice and earthy, and a very different sense of timing that further makes the tracks stand out! Groups and instrumentation vary in a nice way throughout the collection, and the whole thing is the sort of set that will have you soon digging deeper to unlock some of the best sounds from this overlooked scene. Titles include "Dark Sparkle" by JAF Trio, "En Ut" by UMO Helsinki Jazz Orchestra, "Bilawal" by Superposition, "Imprologue" by Kari Ikonen, "Zigenerskan" by Emma Salokoski Ilmiliekki, "Niin On Kehto Tyhjilaan" by Hot Heroes & Iro Haarla, and "Garag" by Riitta Paakki. ✨✧ VariousGilles Peterson In Africa ... CD
Ether (UK), 1970s/2005. Used 2 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The legendary Gilles Peterson takes on the African sound of the 70s – serving up the music at 2 different levels on this overstuffed set! Disc 1 features "The Soul" – classic tunes from the Afro Funk years, brought together by Gilles with a real ear for an interesting groove – and the kind of deeply soulful tracks we've come to expect in his collections over the years. Disc 2 features "The Spirit" – modern tracks from the global underground – all of which have echoes of the older African groove in their rhythms, but which update the sound with changes in rhythm, production, and instrumentation. As with Gilles Peterson In Brazil, the package is a wonderful overview of a genre – done in a way that goes deeper and sounds fresher than most other collections of its nature on the market! 2CD set features 19 tracks in all – including "Bukom Moashie" by Oscar Sulley, "Ajo" by Peter King, "Asmarina" by Fequadu Made-Mesqel, "Mulatu" by Mulatu, "Mahlalela" by Letta Mbulu, "MAW Expensive (Tribute To Fela)" by Masters At Work, "Heart's A Lonely Hunter" by Thievery Corporation with David Byrne, "Aso Kere (IG Culture mix)" by Lekan Babalola, "Lufala Ndonga" by Konono No 1, "Samba" by Miriam Makeba, "Afrika" by Osborne, "Angola (Carl Craig rmx)" by Cesaria Evora, and "New Bell" by Manu Dibango. ✨✧ VariousHits & Misses – Muhammad Ali & The Ultimate Sound Of Fist Fighting ... LP
Trikont (Germany), 1960s/1970s. Very Good+ 2LP ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the most compelling compilations we've heard in ages – a set of tunes by and about Muhammad Ali! It's no secret that back in the day, Ali was way more than just a boxer – he was an international celebrity whose pride and power were a symbol for millions worldwide. At the height of his glory, not only did Ali himself record a number of albums, but he was also graced with countless tribute songs – not only from American artists, but British, Brazilian, and African as well! This festive little set brings together 22 of those great recordings, including a few about boxing in general – with genres that include soul, reggae, and Brazilian grooves – as well as some very catchy novelty numbers that defy classification! Titles include "The People's Choice" and "I'm The Greatest" by Ali himself – plus "8ieme Round" by Trio Madjesi, "Cassius Marcellus Clay" by Jorge Ben, "Muhammad Ali" by Sir Mack Rice, "Muhammad Ali" by Dennis Alcapone, "The Louisville Lip" by Eddie Curtis, "Rumble In The Jungle" by Don Covay, "Foreman Vs Frazier" by Big Youth, "Try It Again" by Joe Frazier, and "Ali Shuffle" by JW Grasshopper & The Butterfly. VariousJazz Club – Cool Jazz ... CD
Jazzclub/Verve (Germany), 1950s/1960s. Used ... $4.99 6.99
Way more than just a simple collection of famous cool jazz numbers – and instead, an ultra-hip set that shows the evolution of the original sound over the space of decades and the stretch of two continents! The collection nicely avoids the obvious overplayed west coast examples of the sound, and goes for some less obvious gems that show the way that players in the late 50s and 1960s took the initial cool jazz inspiration and expanded it tremendously in a range of different modes! As with other titles in the excellent Jazz Club series, the tracks here are pulled from Universal-owned labels like Verve, Impulse, and MPS – recorded on both sides of the Atlantic in the 50s and 60s, and brought together here in one well-done, low-priced package. Titles include "Nuages" by Barney Wilen, "The Cool One" by Art Farmer/Benny Golson Jazztet, "Harper" by Ed Thigpen, "Crackle Hut" by Max Roach, "Coolie" by Dizzy Gillespie, "Cleo's Asp" by Paul Gonsalves, "Serenade In Blue" by Stan Getz, "Snap Crackle" by Roy Haynes, "Foolin Myself" by Lee Konitz, "The Gentle Art Of Love" by Hans Koller, and "Wintersong" by Gerry Mulligan & Paul Desmond. ✨✧ VariousLatin Dance Party 2 – 1960s Boogaloo ... LP
Atlantic/Warner (UK), Late 1960s/Early 1970s. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Latin grooves from the 60s and 70s – most from hard-to-find sides cut for Atlantic Records! Like the first volume, this one dips into some excellent material that was only ever briefly issued on LP – and it mixes it with some overlooked Latin cuts on albums by jazz and soul artists from the same time. The groove's got a tight 60s beat to it – with plenty of Latin Soul riffing, and even a bit of funk in the mix. Titles include "His Groove" and "King Kong" by Eddie Cano & Nino Tempo, "Watusi Boogaloo" and "Light & Sweet" by Willie Rosario, "Are You Sure" by Freedom Sounds, "Ghetto Funk" by Ike Turner, "Blood Shot" by Hubert Laws, "Devilette" by Dave Pike, and "Hip Hug Her" by Mongo Santamaria. VariousLondon Is The Place For Me Vol 3 – Ambrose Adekoya Campbell ... LP
Honest Jons (UK), Late 50s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $21.99 34.99
One of our favorite volumes in the London Is The Place For Me collection – and a brilliant batch of work that criss-crosses West African, West Indian, and postwar jazz styles! Most of the recordings here were done under the leadership of Ambrose Adekoya Campbell – a transplant to London from Lagos in the postwar year, and an artist who had a huge influence on the changing rhythms of his scene. Campbell mixed styles of his roots with those of the larger London community around him – in a way that let in more Latin and Caribbean influences to more traditional African styles – often using guitar in a high-life styled way, but also bringing in some key jazz phrasings as well. As usual with Honest Jons' reissues, the notes are quite detailed, but ultimately a bit unspecific about the actual recordings in the set – although we can say that Campbell's on nearly all of these, and they were all done as 50s 78rpm singles for the Melodisc label. Titles include "We Have It In Africa", "Iku Koni Payin", "I Am A Stranger", "Lagos Mambo", "Ela Da Awa", "and "Calabar-O" by West African Rhythm Brothers; "The Wind In A Frolic" and "Unity" by Nigerian Union Rhythm Group; "Ibikunle Alakija" by Ayinde Bakare & His Meranda Orchestra; and "Late Ojo Davies" and "Geneva Conference" by West African Rhythm Stars. Two groundbreaking collections in one cool package! Volume 3 is one of our favorite volumes in the London Is The Place For Me collection – and a brilliant batch of work that criss-crosses West African, West Indian, and postwar jazz styles! Volume 4 features a collection of incredible work from the postwar, post-colonial years in the UK! As with other volumes, there's an array of Carribean and African influences at work here – often highly rhythmic and performed with lots of percussion, but also served up in ways that has the original modes coming into contact with more contemporary UK styles! Most of the work here was recorded in London, but overflowing with global styles that include mentos, high life, calypso, Latin, and even a bit of jazz – played by an array of artists who all found new means of expression in the capital. Titles include "Mambo Indio" by Shake Keane, "Alphonso In Town" by Lord Kitchener, "Give Her The No 1" by Eric Hayden, "Khauleza" by Dorothy Masuka, "Chicken & Rice" by Young Tiger, "Egyptian Bint Al Cha Cha" by Ginger Johnson, "Don't You Go Away" by Cab Kaye, "Highlife Piccadilly" by The African Messengers, "Darling Don't Say No" by Nat Akins, "African Jazz Cha Cha" by Ginger Johnson, "Piccadilly Folk" by Lord Kitchener, and "Ilu Oyinbo Dara" by Victor Coker. ✨✧ VariousOh No Vs Now Again Vol 1 – Now Again Music Library Vol 1 (limited LP sleeve edition) ... CD
Now Again, 2009. Used ... $14.99
Oh No's given carte blanche to the the Now Again and Soul Cal vaults of obscure funk, psychedelic soul and more – taking on the deep obscurities of those rarity reissuers for a tripped out hip hop funk instrumental set! Here Oh No has put together a record that rivals his underground hip hop funk classics Exodus Into Unknown Rhythms, in which he utilized the Galt MacDermot catalog, and Dr Know's Oxperiment – in which he worked with deep Middle Eastern and Mediterranean psychedelia – bringing an insistent, head nodding experience to say the least. The Now Again catalog includes everything from sinister underground funk to tripped out global psychedelia, while Soul Cal has issued underground funk and soul as great as anything out there – and Oh No reigns the diverse vibes in just enough to keep it tight and funky. He's sort of paying homage to Sound Library funk compilations, laying out 29 short tracks, honestly right up there with Madlib's Beat Konducta series! Titles include "Flight", "What We Need"., "Price Is Right", "Out West", "Coffee break", "Starlight", "Not Nice", "Raw Stew", "Soul Surgery", "Phantastic" and more. CD

A brilliant batch of electronic, cold wave, and post-punk tracks – all drawn from the farther reaches of the Swiss underground of the 80s – a scene that was far more secret than those in the UK, Germany, or other European hotbeds of electronic experimentation! ✨✧ VariousSuperkingi – The Weird World Of Finnish Hard Rock 1969 to 1977 ... LP
Svart (Finland), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A collection of cuts that's way hipper than you might expect – partly the hard rock promised in the title, but also served up in all these really weird and wild ways that more than live up to the unusual spirit of the Finnish scene of the 70s! At the time, Finland was a surprising hotbed of creative recording activity – farther reaches in jazz, inside grooves in fusion, and a strong legacy of rock groups who were really picking up the fuzz and power that UK groups had unleashed at the end of the 60s! There's plenty here that would stand perfectly right next to the headiest guitar hero groups of that generation – but there's also differences at times, too – like a cool, compressed production style that often makes for some really great sonic play overall – and heavy drums that almost get into some funky passages at points. And of course, the lyrics are all in Finnish, which makes these tracks sound even cooler than they might in English – served up on a well-chosen set list that includes "Superkingi" by Jigsaw, "Palaa" by Yellow, "Rokkilauaja Vain" by Danny, "Uskontunnustus" by Woodoo, "Pikku Nainen" by Hard Rock Sallinen, "Plastic Maailma" by Paroni Paakkunaien, "Kivistdan" by Sulo's Rock Band, "Vieras Sateesta" by Apostolit, "American Look" by Haikara, and "Hideko Tojo" by Apollo. ✨✧ VariousWheedle's Groove – Seattle's Finest In Funk & Soul 1965-75 ... CD
Light In The Attic, Late 60s/Early 70s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Funk from Seattle? Hardly seems likely – but prepare to be amazed! The funky reissuers at Light In The Attic, in collaboration with Mr Supreme, have unearthed a treasure trove of rare singles and groovers for the set – all obscure local recordings from the Emerald City scene, most of which never made it past the Pacific Northwest to the national charts. Back in the day, Seattle was a real cross-cultural hotbed – filled with folks who'd picked up and moved out from points east, settling in the Central District, working for Boeing, and reveling in the freedom of the new city to find their own groove. This set does a great job of documenting the flowering of eastern-styled funk in Seattle's growing scene of the late 60s – and features a range of tracks that run from deep funk to hard soul, sock-boogaloo, and even a bit of hard-handed piano jazz! The package features a great set of notes on the music, and a long set list that includes "Louie Louie" by The Topics, "Brighter Tomorrow" by Soul Swingers, "This Is Me" by Cookin Bag, "Bold Soul Sister Bold Soul Brother" by Black On White Affair, "Cissy Strut" by Johnny Lewis Trio, "Stop Losing Your Chances" by Cold Bold & Together, "I Just Want To Be" by Robbie Hill, "Wheedle's Groove" by Annakonda, "Hey Jude" by Overton Berry Trio, and "A Little Love Affair" by Patrinell Staten.
