A monster – and one of the most anthemic cuts that James ever cut! Begins with a monster drumbeat, kicks into a stone groove with loads of guitar, horn, and funky bass – while James shouts the whole thing through without faltering! The track became the motto of a generation – and it's a heck of a lot funkier than "We Shall Overcome"! 7-inch, Vinyl record
One of the best versions of "Funky Four Corners" we've ever heard! The bass is rattling along at a level so loud and heavy that it's bound to pop the top off your speaker – while Jerry screams and shouts his way through the lyrics in a way that would make James Brown proud, a fact that he even acknowledges when he shouts "Sorry JB!" at one point in the cut! "Soul Lover" is fantastic too – a funky answer song to "Tramp", with a similar hard sock beat, and a hard break at the intro, which is augmented here by conga work! Both cuts are great – and one of the best singles ever by Jerry O! 7-inch, Vinyl record
A stone winner – on both sides! You already know Hugh's classic "Grazing In The Grass", one of the all-time great Afro Pop numbers – with trademark loud cowbell and wonderful off-beat horn sounds. "Bajabula" is pretty darn great, too – and although it's very very slow, it's got a similar haunting groove, with off-kilter rhythms that make it really compelling. 7-inch, Vinyl record
Great work by The Radiants – arranged here by Charles Stepney, with a tripped-out sound that's like the best late 60s work by The Dells! "Ida Mae Foster" is a real bit of psychedelic soul, with guitars coming down on the beat, fuzzing things up along with a really loud cello, while the group works Bobby Miller's lyrics with some raw harmonies that are almost perfect! "Choo Choo" is a bit poppier, and like their earlier work – but the cut has one monster hook that's totally worth it! 7-inch, Vinyl record
Classic work from this heavy funky combo! "Blow Your Mind" certainly does – as it's got a full brace of loud brassy horns hitting hard on top of fuzzed-out guitar. After the intro, the track kicks back into an easy groove that's really good – slow and trippy, one of the group's best ever tracks! "40 Acres" has lots of guitar too – and a strong conga-driven groove that's equally trippy! 7-inch, Vinyl record
2 of our favorite cuts by Marvin Gaye – slinky, gliding bits of mellow soul – totally haunting, and with these floating piano bits behind the vocals that are simply amazing! Gaye's always sounded great on his own, but with this Leon Ware production, he soars to the skies on a soft cloud of gentle soul! 7-inch, Vinyl record
On this single, it's the mellow cut that's the great one! "Heaven Must Be Like This" is one of the best spacey soul tracks ever recorded – a sweet and mellow groover that's shortened here for the 7" release, but which still moves along with a depth you wouldn't expect. The track's a great one to trip on back to – and drift away to the clouds on a breezy summer day! 7-inch, Vinyl record
(Still in an Phonogram sleeve, with a small number in pen. Includes jukebox strips.)
