✨✧ Archie Bell & The DrellsThere's Gonna Be A Showdown/Go For What You Know ... 7-inch
Atlantic, 1968. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
One of the first big Philly moments for Archie Bell & The Drells! "Showdown" is an undisputed classic – with an incredible hook, and a strident soul groove that replaces the band's earlier Texas funk style. Gamble & Huff wrote and produced, and the cut's got some tight arrangements by Bobby Martin. The flip's tasty too! 7-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ BlackbyrdsWalking In Rhythm/The Baby ... 7-inch
Fantasy, 1974. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
"Walking In Rhythm" was probably the biggest hit ever for this seminal 70s funk group. The cut's got a hook you'd recognize in a minute, and was played to death on AM Radio. However, we're more partial to "The Baby" – a great little funk track with some nice effects, and some very tasty production by Donald Byrd! 7-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ Brenda & The TabulationsAnd My Heart Sang (Tra La La)/Lies Lies Lies ... 7-inch
Top & Bottom, 1970. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Two tasty early tracks from Brenda & The Tabulations. "And My Heart Sang" is a sweet little harmony track, with some nice low notes from the boys behind her, and Brenda's lovely voice floating over the top. "Lies" is more uptempo, with a driving feel, and a strong little soul hook in a Detroit mode. 7-inch, Vinyl record
(Labels have light wear.)

✨✧ Brenda & The TabulationsRight On The Tip Of My Tongue/Always & Forever ... 7-inch
Top & Bottom, Early 70s. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Genius, pure genius – and the kind of female soul tune we'll never tire of! From the first note, the track oozes sadness – really blue in its approach, setting the scene perfectly for Brenda's great interpretation of Van McCoy's lyric. The hook's incredible – the kind that would grab you even coming out of the muddiest AM radio! The flip's nice too – a bit more upbeat, but with a similar approach. 7-inch, Vinyl record
(Labels have light wear.)

✨✧ Bobby ByrdIf You Don't Work You Can't Eat/You've Got To Change Your Mind ... 7-inch
King, Late 60s. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
Some of Bobby Byrd's best work ever! "If You Don't Work" is a hard funky killer – done in a tight James Brown way, with lots of choppy guitar, and Bobby's vocals coming off at breakneck speed, just to keep up with the band. Nice simple message, too! "You've Got To Change Your Mind" is a great duet between Bobby and James. It's got a totally catchy hook, and a nice rolling groove that's extremely satisfying. James beats Bobby in the vocal department, but Bobby adds a nice bit of soul in the mix. 7-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ CaressFill Me Up (Heart To Heart) (double a-side single) ... 7-inch
Roulette, 1976. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A sweet bit of disco, with a wonderful hook! We've never been sure if this Caress is the same group that went onto record later for P&P Records fame, but the tune's got these sweeping strings, falsetto vocals, and a nicely rhythmic pulse that all share real P&P touches – even if Peter Brown or Patrick Adam's names aren't on the credits! Written by Gregg Diamond, and a really nice little tune! 7-inch, Vinyl record
(White label promo.)

✨✧ Classic SullivansPaint Yourself In the Corner/I Don't Want To Lose You ... 7-inch
Kwanza, 1973. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
The Classic Sullivans were one of those great lost groups to record for a Warner Brother subsidiary in the late 60s/early 70s – and like all those groups, they never got the attention they deserved. "Paint Yourself In the Corner", despite the clunky title, is a great soul track with a real Impressions-esque approach to harmony, and a very catchy hook! 7-inch, Vinyl record
(Purple label pressing.)

✨✧ Clifford CurryShe Shot A Hole In My Soul/We're Gonna Hate Ourselves In The Morning ... 7-inch
Elf, 1967. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
One of the best singles from obscure southern soul singer Cliff Curry. "She Shot A Hole" is pretty good, with kind of a midtempo groove, and a catchy hook – but the better cut is "We're Gonna Hate Ourselves", which has a mellow vocal from Clifford, and a great compressed sound that's like early Muscle Shoals work, touched with kind of a New Orleans approach to rhythm. The hook will stay with you long after the track's over, too! 7-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ Detroit EmeraldsDo Me Right/Just Now & Then ... 7-inch
Westbound, Early 70s. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Great stuff by this excellent Detroit harmony group – cut during their best period. "Do Me Right" is a catchy little groover, with kind of a popping bubbling hook that makes the cut one of the group's most memorable. "Just Now & Then" is a slow mellow number, with a southern soul-ish horn finish, and stone Detroit harmonies at the best moments. 7-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ DramaticsWhatcha See Is Whatcha Get/Thankful For Your Love ... 7-inch
Volt, Early 70s. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
"Whatcha See" is one of The Dramatics' best cuts ever! It's got a dope rolling groove, a hard righteous message, and a hook that just won't quit. The track's more than a bit funky, and it's one of those tunes that you've heard for years – and will smile upon catching again! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Aretha FranklinYou're All I Need To Get By/Pullin ... 7-inch
Atlantic, Late 60s. Near Mint- ... $5.99
Classic stuff – as Aretha's version of the Ashford & Simpson hit "You're All I Need" is augmented with lovely strings and large arrangements by Arif Mardin, very much in the style that Aretha was moving into after her first few sessions with Atlantic. "Pullin" is a bit harder, and has a nice hook! 7-inch, Vinyl record
(In an Atlantic sleeve, with a small rip. Includes jukebox strips!)

✨✧ Harlem River DriveNeed You/Overtime ... 7-inch
Arista, 1975. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Hmmm....we're not sure if this is the same Harlem River Drive that recorded with Eddie Palmieri, but we've got to assume that they are, as we can't imagine 2 bands using the same name at the same time, and both apparently from New York. "Need You" has also got a sound that's kind of a progression from the famous album by the group, with a shift from Latin funk to Latin disco – in the kind of groove that Eddie Drennon was moving to at the same time. The track's a vocal groover, with a nice catchy soul hook. "Overtime" is a bit more straight funk – but with a heavy bottom sound that's also in the Harlem River Drive style. 7-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ IntrudersCowboys To Girls/Turn The Hands Of Time ... 7-inch
Gamble, Late 60s. Very Good- ... Out Of Stock
Fantastic stuff from this great Philly group! "Cowboys To Girls" is probably the group's biggest track from the old days – with a loping hook that's as sweet as it is catchy! "Turn The Hands Of Time" is wonderful too – with a strident driving groove, punctuated with vibes, and featuring some incredible harmonies that really send the message of the cut! Bobby Martin arranged both cuts – and did a fantastic job! 7-inch, Vinyl record

T Neck, 1969. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The a-side's a familiar classic, but the b-side's our real favorite! "I Turned You On" has a nice slow sexy groove, with the kind of hook and power that made the Isleys so great in the early 70s! Wonderful stuff – and not easy to find on vinyl! 7-inch, Vinyl record
(Includes jukebox tag. Vinyl has a tiny drill hole.)

✨✧ Jesse JamesIf You Want A Love Affair/I Never Meant To Love Her ... 7-inch
20th Century, 1975. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A totally excellent single by one of our favorite overlooked soul singers! "If You Want" starts out with some amazing echoey guitar picked passages – ala early 70s Barry White (in fact, they sound like they were lifted from the Gloria Scott album!) Then, Jesse comes in on a monologue, and next leaps into the song's tasty catchy hook. Arrangments by HB Barnum, who also had a hand in writing the cut. And this wasn't on an album, was it? 7-inch, Vinyl record

(Maroon label pressing.)

✨✧ MaloSuavecito/Nena ... 7-inch
Warner, Early 70s. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Excellent work from this hip west coast Latin combo! "Suavecito" is one of the greatest Latin-inflected pop ballads of all time – a sweet little tune with a really catchy hook, and a harmony sound that's right out of Spanish Harlem! "Nena" is a faster groover with a nice jazzy flourish – tight, breezy, and very sweet! 7-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ Mel & TimBackfield In Motion/Do Right Baby ... 7-inch
Bamboo, Late 60s. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
We love these guys – and both cuts are great! "Backfield In Motion" is a huge hit for the duo – with amazingly acrobatic vocals, and a strange little hook that's a lot more enduring than you'd imagine. "Do Right" is just as great, with a jaunty little groove, and the kind of vocal pyrotechnics that always made Mel & Tim so great! 7-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ Natural FourHeaven Right Here On Earth/While You're Away ... 7-inch
Curtom, 1975. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Leroy Hutson arranged, produced, and wrote both tracks – and they're both excellent harmony sides by this stellar soul group from Chicago! "Heaven Right Here On Earth" is one of the group's trademark tunes – a beautifully slow track that starts with some electric sitar, then slides into a floating harmony vocal that's perfect all the way through! "While You're Away" is a bit mellower, but in a way that brings the harmonies even more to the forefront. The cut's got a great hook, and is produced to perfection with a stone cold sound! 7-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ Natural FourIt's The Music (voc, inst) ... 7-inch
Curtom, 1976. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A tripped-out, flanged-out bit of funk from The Natural Four – much more of a dancefloor number than the group's earlier harmony soul – and produced with a nice compressed style that has lots of sweet slick 70s touches! The tune's got an incredible hook – thanks to co-writer Leroy Hutson – and the whole thing grooves like some of Leroy's more uptempo work from the late 70s, but perhaps with a bit more ensemble funk at the bottom. Hutson produced, too! 7-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ 9th CreationFalling In Love/Sexy Girl ... 7-inch
Pye, 1975. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
2 nice mellow cuts by 9th Creation – very different than their funk work, but still pretty great! "Sexy Girl" is our favorite here – as the tune's got a warm harmony sound, a nice jaunty groove, and a hook that keeps on going long over the cut's gone. A great east coast-y number – produced really nicely! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Hot Wax, 1969. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
"Somebody's Been Sleeping" is a stone cold 70's soul classic! It starts with a nice high-pitched choppy bit, then rolls into a groove that has a great AM radio soul sound. Nice catchy hook, too! 7-inch, Vinyl record
(In a Hot Wax sleeve.)

✨✧ ParliamentLook At What I Almost Missed/What You Been Growing ... 7-inch
Revilot, Late 60s. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Early stuff from George Clinton & Parliament! "Look At What" is pretty straight soul, but "What You Been Growing" is a nice one, with a bit of trippiness to it, and a nice hook that kind of plays off of "Norweigian Wood". 7-inch, Vinyl record

Paisley Park, 1987. Very Good+ (pic cover)... Out Of Stock
Sure, the politics seem a bit silly now – but the track's still one of Prince's last really compelling hits. It's got a totally infectious hook, a spare Timmy Thomas-ish beat, and a strangely captivating vocal that really sticks with us. 7-inch, Vinyl record
(Sleeve has some wear & aging, wrinkled corners.)

✨✧ PrinceWhen Doves Cry/17 Days (the rain will come down then U will have 2 choose) ... 7-inch
Warner, 1984. Very Good+ (pic cover)... Out Of Stock
One of Prince's biggest tunes ever – and a track that still sounds surprisingly great to our ears these days – funky, chunky, and completely catchy – with a hook that shouldn't go over so well, but really sends the tune home time and time again! "17 Days" is great too – a deeper, almost story-type cut that points the way towards some of Prince's music on albums to come – but still with all the fantastic groove of the Purple Rain era! If you ever needed the kind of cut to show you what Prince did that was so special, "17 Days" might be the one. 7-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ RadiantsIda Mae Foster/Choo Choo ... 7-inch
Chess, 1969. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Great work by The Radiants – arranged here by Charles Stepney, with a tripped-out sound that's like the best late 60s work by The Dells! "Ida Mae Foster" is a real bit of psychedelic soul, with guitars coming down on the beat, fuzzing things up along with a really loud cello, while the group works Bobby Miller's lyrics with some raw harmonies that are almost perfect! "Choo Choo" is a bit poppier, and like their earlier work – but the cut has one monster hook that's totally worth it! 7-inch, Vinyl record
(In a lightly wrinkled Chess sleeve.)

Very nice! "Memory Lane" is one of Minnie's last tracks ever – and it's got a super hook, really nice production, and vocals that always send us over the edge. Minnie's in perfect form here, and the track's a great blending of the floating style of her early recordings with the smooth jazzy tip of the later ones – and it's always in season here in Chicago! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Cotillion, 1980. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
"Watching You" is a tight little pop tune from Slave – perhaps less of a full funk workout than some of their other tracks, but with some sweetly compressed vocals that give the number a nice nice hook! Even nicer is "Dreamin" – a bit more subdued, with a sly soulful approach! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Blue eyed soul doesn't get any better than this! "Expressway" is one of those tunes that you've heard a gazillion times – but it's still an amazing soul song, and hearing this original 45 is like cracking open a fresh new version. "Hey Gyp" has a bit more of a garagey feel – but it's still got wonderful vocals and a great hook, and works well as a mod crossover number that would fit perfectly next to The Shadows Of Knight. 7-inch, Vinyl record

"Does Your Mama Know" is about as great as you can get for 60s deep soul – with an anthemic hook that will send chills down your spine from the first minute you hear it! The first 3 seconds of this are enough for us – as the track leads in with an amazing guitar part that really hooks us up! The bit's incredible – this slow downturning part that will never be duplicated, and which opens the door to some of the most adventurous writing the group ever did. The tune's funky, but in a really subtle way – one that makes for some incredibly soulful vocalizing too! "Not So Sad" is a great one too – harder and funkier, with that dark dark Westbound production approach! 7-inch, Vinyl record
