✨✧ France GallPoupee De Cire Poupee De Son ... LP
Philips/Third Man, 1965. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
France Gall won the Eurovision song contest with the title track of this one – and for good reason too, given that the tune is totally groovy! The rest of the work here really follows suit – romping, jerking, and grooving in that wonderful mix of mod rhythms that made France's 60s material so great – some of the best of the French pop scene at the time, with a sound that's really a cut above on all the numbers here! Backings are by the mighty Alain Gouraguer, who brings in a hip mix of jazz inflections, rocking rhythms, and some of the more sparkling soundtrack elements bubbling in the French 60s scene – all a perfect accompaniment for Gall's catchy girl pop vocals. Titles include "Poupee De Cire Poupee De Son", written by Serge Gainsbourg – plus "Le Coeur Qui Jazze", "Le Premier Chagrin D'Amour", "On T'Avait Prevenue", "Dis A Ton Capitaine", "Nounours", "Laisse Tomber Les Filles", and "Bonne Nuit". Guy CabayCabaycedaire ... LP
Tricatel (France), Late 70s. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $29.99 32.99
Beautiful vocal work from Guy Cabay – put together with a strong touch of jazz, a bit of bossa, and a swirling vibe that's mighty nice! Guy's got a breathy style of singing that works perfect with the backings – and its bits of guitar, organ, and other elements – often used as gently as Cabay's vocals, but in a style that's warm and sophisticated – like some of the hippest material on Saravah Records in the 70s, particularly work by Pierre Barouh! These tunes also often have a breezy rhythm that borrows from bossa nova, and which really suits the style of Guy's vocals – on titles that include "Julia Deus", "Pove Tiesse", "Tot Reguede", "Camamele Et Cataplame", "A M'Vwezene", "Li Robaleu", "Pax Pollinibus Bonae Voluntatis", and "Li Sabat D'Sinte Mere L'Oto". ✨✧ TitaL'Incomparable Tita ... CD
Barclay/Universal (France), 1968. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Beautiful bossa from late 60s France – a really lovely session that mixes the vocals of Tita with jazzy backings from Trio Camara – who we know from their own legendary album on the Saravah label! The sound here is a bit different than bossa from Brazil – somewhat darker at points, carried off in that cool continental mode that would sometimes show up when sounds from Rio were filtered through 60s Paris – kind of an extra level of hipness that really makes for some special music here. There's a bit of additional strings next to the trio's backing, which underscores some elements of sadness and also makes for a bit of a soundtrack feel at points – and other instrumentation includes acoustic guitar and some occasional flute. Titles include "Anjo", "Trapezista", "Zefa", "Um Motivo De Ser", "Beatriz", "Nao Faz Mal", "Quebra Mar", and "Vejo A Tarde Cair". (Brazil, French) CD
(2009 French digipak pressing.)

✨✧ Brigitte BardotBrigitte Bardot – L'Appareil A Sous ... LP
Philips (France), 1963. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Sexy stuff from one of the most famous French stars of the 60s – a record that has Brigitte Bardot working in the same sort of slinky territory as Serge Gainsbourg, but with a slightly different feel overall! The album's a bit jazzier than some of Bardot's later work – with great backings from Claude Bolling and Francois Rauber – served up with some occasional Latin touches, of the type you might find in some of Gainsbourg's music of the time. Backings are somewhat large, but never sleepy – and titles include originals by Bolling and Serge Gainsbourg – titles that include "C'est Rigolo", "Pas D'Advantage", "Noir Et Blanc", "Rose D'Eau", "Invitango", "El Cuchipe", and "Les Amis De La Musique". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original UK pressing, in a flipback cover! Cover has light wear in two corners, but this is a great copy overall.)

✨✧ Serge GainsbourgConfidentiel ... LP
Philips/Mercury (France), 1963. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Nothing too confidential here, given the openness that Serge Gainsbourg brings to his music – and a great early 60s session that has Serge working with spare jazz backing, courtesy of bassist Michel Gaudry and guitarist Elek Bacsik! With no other percussion, piano, or orchestral backings to support his vocals, the album is one of Serge's most intimate – a strangely personal portrait of his work, as the two stringed instruments weave webs of rhythm and melody against Serge's raspy vocals on tunes like "Maxim's", "Negative Blues", "Elaeudania Teiteia", "Chez Les Ye Ye", "Scenic Railway", and "No No Thanks No". Despite the absence of other instrumentation, the effect is wonderfully full – and the songs sparkle as much as Serge's other work from the time! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Swingle SingersSwingling Telemann ... CD
Universal (France), 1966. Used ... Out Of Stock
Lovely work from the great Swingle Singers – expanding their sound tremendously since their early records, bringing a jazz vocal approach to works by Telemann, Marcello, Couperin, and others! Arrangements are by Ward Swingle – still very much in the groovy soundtrack-y mode that's always made us love the group – and backings are by the team of Guy Pedersen on bass and Daniel Humair on drums. Tracks include "La Couperin", "Gigue", "Fugue En Re Mineur", "Presto", "Sonate En Do Mineur", and "Concerto A Six". (Vocalists, French) CD
