Very cool compilation that features rare French recordings made by the lovely actress featured in the film Black Orpheus. The first batch of tracks have a lively loud raw quality, similar to the stuff on the original soundtrack – and titles of these include "Carnaval Samba", "Samba D'Orphee", and "Adieu Tristesse". Other tracks have more of a French pop feel, with titles like "La Fille De La Montagne", "C'est Lui Ma Vie", and "Va-t En Vit Mon Amour". Very nice stuff overall, and some extremely rare recordings served up in a lovely package! (Brazil, French) CD

Excellent vocal jazz from postwar Paris! The Blue Stars were a legendary combo that were led by Blossom Dearie, and which featured a host of great vocal talents that would later go onto form groups like Les Double Six or The Swingle Singers, including Mimi Perrin and Christine Legrand, as well as instrumental jazz artists like Fats Sadi and Roger Guerin, who are doing some rare vocalization here. The first 4 tracks on the set are pulled from a 1956 ep – and it features the group on the tracks "Jumpin At The Woodside", "C'est La Vie", "Broadway At Basin Street", and "Grapevine". The next 12 tracks are from the Pardon My English LP – which has the group down to a sextet, working without Dearie, in a groovy accented English vocal style that's a direct precursor of the vocalese grooving of Les Double Six. Titles on that set include "Small Talk", "Move", "Did You Close Your Eyes?", and "Promises & Lies". The last 3 tracks on the set are a bit different – featuring vocals and guitar by Henri Salvador, with backing on bass and drums. The style of Salvador's work is still similar, though – way more vocalese than the "blues" in the title would make you expect – and the tracks are lifted from a rare Fontana ep-only release that was recorded in the same year. The famous French rocker Claude Francois made his debut in 1962 – and this cool set brings together his initial 7" EP release with some other very groovy work from the time! Claude steps out on his own tunes "Belles Belles Belles", "Moi Je Pense Encore A Toi", "Venus En Blue Jeans", and "Hey Potatoes" – and also contributes tunes to a set of four releases by Koko. But maybe the coolest part of the set – and the biggest – is a full album's worth of material from the band of Olivier Despax, mostly instrumentals with Madison grooves and other hip styles – nice organ and plenty of guitar, then vocals from Claude right at the end. Despax titles include "Lolo's Madison", "The Madison", "A Little Bit Of Shout (part 1 & 2)", "Mashed Potatoes", and "Paris Madison". The set then ends with two tracks from the more folksy Danyel Gerard – and a cool Franco/Arabian take on "La Nabout Twist" by Koko. CD

Totally groovy work from French singer Gillian Hills – an artist who was initially best known for her work in film, thanks to movies like Beat Girl or Les Liaisons Dangereuses – but one who grew to become one of the cooler singers in Parisian pop during the 60s! Gillian's work here is a great bridge between two generations of chanteuses – a bit early in the "yeh yeh" years of French pop, but still done with all the grooves and jerky rhythms of that scene – but also maybe slightly more expressive at times, in a way that has Hills bringing her acting charisma to the music! Arrangements are often nicely jazzy, but in playful 60s ways – kind of the epitome of the bright, bubbly vibe of the French pop world of the period – and since most of Hills' work from the period was issued on 7" singles and EP releases, not full albums, the music here is a lot more obscure than that of contemporaries like Sylvie Vartan or Francoise Hardy. Titles include "Tut Tut Tut", "Cha Cha Stop", "Je Partirai", "Tu Mens", "Ma Premiere Cigarette", "Un Petit Baiser", "Ne T'En Fais Pas", "C'Est Le Garcon", "Rien N'Est Change", "Maintenant Il Telephone", "Les Jolis Coeurs", "Le Paradis Pour Toit", "Qui A Su", and "Oublie". Incredible female pop from 60s France – not weepy ballads or old school Paris numbers, but the kind of hip-snapping, all-groovy material that made the 60s French scene so great! Loads of these tracks are new to our ears (and we love French grooves a lot!) – and this volume of the series seems to dig even deeper than before – through a range of rare 7" EP material and singles, to come up with some killer tracks that will move way beyond the bigger cuts you might know from Francoise Hardy or Brigitte Bardot. The production and instrumentation is superb throughout – often with these funky currents that make these tracks feel years ahead of their time – and as usual with Ace, the whole presentation is great – from ultra-clear sound through full notes on the music too.
