✨✧ Roscoe HolcombOld Church ... LP
Mississippi, 1972. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Appalachian music great Roscoe Holcomb is best known for his Folkways recordings of the early 60s – but he sounds equally wonderful here in a rare performance recorded at a church in Portland in 1972! There's a stark, moody feel to the music – summed up perfectly in the photo on the cover, and billed by Folkways as the "high lonesome sound" – as Roscoe plays these hypnotic lines on banjo that are often filled with these cyclical passages that weave a dark musical tapestry, while his vocals reach for redemption with these qualities that are completely haunting. The set features two very long tracks – "Rocky Mountain" and "The Village Churchyard" – next to shorter cuts that include "East Virginia Blues", "Swanno Mountain", "Single Girl", and "Black Eyed Snake". Hunt & TurnerMagic Landscape ... CD
Village Thing/Lion, 1972. New Copy ... $5.99 14.99
A really beautiful set that was issued on a sub-label of UK folk powerhouse Transatlantic – yet a set that's nicely different than some of the better-known work from that label! Ian Hunt and John Thomas both play acoustic guitars, and add in a bit of bass and light percussion – in a stripped-down style that has all the elements of folk, but sounds nothing like it – as there's a much cooler post-60s vibe – not really singer/songwriter, but this sense of intimacy and adult approaches to the music that's very special – maybe a bit like the team of Lambert & Nuttycombe, yet very much in the group's own spirit. The duo really transform the material they touch – as evidenced on their great version of "Living Without You" – heard here next to titles that include "Hold Me Know", "Silver Lady", "We Say We're Happy", "Mr Bojangles", "Older Now & Younger Then", "Morning For Eve", and "Rockfield Rag". ✨✧ Peter IsaacsonPeter Isaacson Sings The Songs Of (yellow vinyl pressing) ... LP
Altair/Americana Anthropology, 1971. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A record issued in the 70s, but one that documents the legacy of 60s folk in which Peter Isaacson was a part – working as a singer and guitarist in the Village scene at the time, where he honed his skills on songs by Bob Dylan, Tim Hardin, and other contemporaries! The album was recorded back home in Kansas, after Isaacson had given up on New York – and that kind of gives it a "60s hangover" sort of vibe – as Peter makes his way through a host of familiar tunes, but with surprisingly dark currents that come across in ways that are very different than the originals – even though the readings just feature acoustic guitar and vocals. The set's a lost gem from the very underground years of American indie labels – and titles include "Long Way Back Home", "Affair On 8th Avenue", "I Shall Be Released", "Ribbon Of Darkness", "I Threw It All Away", "Lalena", and "Both Sides Now". StringbeanOld Time Banjo Pickin & Singin – With Stringbean The Kentucky Wonder & His Five-String Banjo ... CD
Starday/Gusto, 1962. New Copy ... $4.99 7.99
Stringbean may look a bit silly on the cover, but he's a dead serious banjo player – one of the greats of his generation, and an artist who's sometimes overlooked on his instrument, because of a penchant for humor in his live performances! And although some of the songs here have a bit of wit at the start, once things get going, Stringbean's in that great mix of old time styles that the Starday Records label was hitting hard in the 60s – one of the few strong outlets for more country-flavored work on banjo, at a time when so many of the folk revival kids wanted things steered a bit more their way! Needless to say, you probably never would have caught Stringbean headlining a club in the Village – but that difference is what makes a record like this so great to discover – as you'll hear on titles that include "Birdie", "Don't Bob Your Hair Girls", "Herdin Cattle", "Keep My Skillet Good & Greasy", "Give Me Back My Five Dollars", and "Wake Up Little Betty". VariousLes Cousins – The Soundtrack Of Soho's Legendary Folk & Blues Club (3CD set) ... CD
Strawberry (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 3CDs ... $28.99 34.99
You might not know Les Cousins, but back in the city it was a very important club on the London scene – a crossroads of blues, folk, and other styles – with an influence that was every bit important in England as the Greenwich Village clubs were in the US! This massive 3CD set does a great job of documenting the sounds that passed through its stage – not via live recordings, but over a well-chosen array of cuts that demonstrate just how hip British work of the time could be – folk-plus material, of the sort you'd hear on the best albums on Island Records or Transatlantic, all very much of the generation of Nick Drake and Fairport Convention! The 3CD set does a really great job of showing the wide range of acts from this moment – including many we haven't had on other reissues in recent years – in a great box that features 72 tracks, and very detailed notes on the material. Includes work from The Levee Brothers, Roy Harper, Dr Strangely Strange, Strawbs, Owen Hand, Dave Evans, Anne Briggs, Tom Yates, Duffy Power, Ron Geesin, Jackson C Frank, Martin Carthy, Dando Shaft, Shelagh McDonald, Al Jones, Sweeney's Men, Sam Mitchell, Tir Na Nog, Beverly, Michael Chapman, and many others. (Rock, Folk/Country) CD
