Two keyboard heavy cuts – a great original, and a funky cover too! The group's "Inner Space" is wonderful – and begins with this romping drum part that sets the tune for a mellower keyboard line – all nice and funky, and balanced with each other in a really unusual way! The flipside features a remake of the great Manzel tune "Space Funk" – with a drumbreak that's a nice take on the sound of the original's intro – and a nicely changed-up bassline that's a perfect blend for the cool moogy keyboards! (Funky 45's, Deep Funk)7-inch, Vinyl record
Nothing halting about this killer cut – a fuzzy, funky number that has lots of tripped-out guitar over heavy drums – and some phase-shifting chromatic element in the mix that may be processed vibes, or something far more mysterious! "Euler Spiral" is equally heady, but a very different number – a slow, spacey groove that takes its funk very slow – almost like some of the cool Johnny Harris instrumentals from years back! (Funky 45's, Deep Funk)7-inch, Vinyl record
A great take on the funky styles of the 80s – as Dead End Boogie work here with a spare drum machine rhythm on "New Tires", sewn together with a wicked bassline, then given all these light guitar and keyboard touches along the way – but all with production that's a lot more lo-fi than any 80s groove – and we mean that in a really great way! The flipside has a similar approach – but is slower, murkier, and moodier too. (Funky 45's, Deep Funk)7-inch, Vinyl record
A moody little funk track from the production genius of Misha Panfilov – whose work seems to be moving more and more into a category of its own! "The Rays" has a strange, spare vocal chorus that's abstracted and echoed in the production – used wordlessly alongside an echoey guitar line and a very moogy keyboard – all grounded with romping drums! The drums romp even more on the flipside – moving quickly to keep the energy up – while the guitar and other elements seem to get even weirder and waterier in the mix! (Funky 45's, Deep Funk)7-inch, Vinyl record
A beautiful cut, with a nicely deep feel – funky drums at the core, but some great slow-moving Fender Rhodes, and a flute solo that's completely wonderful – a bit blue, and nice and raspy – almost like old school Roland Kirk or Harold McNair! "Seabass" is mighty nice too – with lots more flute from Oliver Bill, a musician we'd like to hear a lot more from in the future! (Funky 45's, Deep Funk)7-inch, Vinyl record
A beautiful contemporary bit of sweet soul – a tune that dips and swells in a mighty nice way, with a slow funk groove at the bottom, and these heartbreaking vocals from Marietta Smithover the top! "Suns Of Marvin" is faster and funkier, and instrumental – with a great drum/bass/riffing guitar line that feels like some rare funky 45 from back in the day – right down to the gritty production that really sends things over the top! Nice vibes solo in the middle, too! (Funky 45's, Deep Funk)7-inch, Vinyl record
Soul singer Marietta Smith steps out with a gentle glide over the funky stepping rhythms of "Tumblin Down" – really helping open up the motion of the tune as she works with a very distinct vocal approach! The flipside's an instrumental, "Return Of The Soul Sabre" – one that has the group really kicking it with great funky drums, a catchy organ line, and some cool spacey touches on the guitar that make the whole thing sound spacey and spooky – but funky too! (Funky 45's, Deep Funk)7-inch, Vinyl record
The bass dives deep, but the percussion percolates nicely over the top – almost a Miami 70s funk groove, but more offbeat overall – as are the cool reed lines that get voiced over the groove in an excellent way! The percussion's even better on the flipside, which has a TK Records-style drum break at the beginning – as the cut then opens up to all sorts of cool psychedelic guitar, produced to perfection by Misha Panfilov! (Funky 45's, Deep Funk)7-inch, Vinyl record
Smith is Marietta Smith, whose soulful vocals really send both cuts here over the top! "Shadows" has a great mix of soaring horns and funky drums – this kind of quick strutting groove that's pumped up in all sorts of cool ways by the vocals, which also do great things on a breakdown in the middle! "Nothing Lasts Forever" has a cool bass/percussion break that populates the groove – richer than the standard sort of funk rhythm, which only serves to open up Smith even more! (Funky 45's, Deep Funk)7-inch, Vinyl record
"Wireman" has a groove that owes plenty to The Meters, but in the best way possible – as Harbans takes a mix of funky drums, organ, and riffing guitar – then makes it his own with a nicely jazzy sax solo, which has almost a laidback Stanley Turrentine CTI sort of vibe! "Beyond The Cosmic Ray" is slower and spookier – funky drums, but a very cool vibey keyboard sound that makes you feel like you're not getting away from the cosmic ray after all! (Funky 45's, Deep Funk)7-inch, Vinyl record
A great return to form for the legendary Sidney Barnes – known best as a onetime member of both Rotary Connection and the P-Funk universe – but working here with great small combo backing from the Speedometer combo! "Best Thing" is an original by Barnes – sung in this sweet raspy style that gets great support from the funky group – who even thrown in a sweet Hammond solo in the middle! The flipside is a remake of Nolan Porter's "If I Could Only Be Sure" – a midtempo burner that has Sidney sounding even better on vocals! (Funky 45's, Deep Funk)7-inch, Vinyl record
A wicked slow funk number from Fat Night – haunting, moody, and very very compelling! There's a slightly trippy feel to the track – maybe from the heavy echo used on the vocals – but the core groove of stepping guitar and drums almost takes us back to the best mellow harmony cuts from the east coast scene of the early 70s – as does the lyric!
