Guitarist Joe Marcinek has a mighty sharp group here – a combo that features plenty of organ work from Robert Walter, plus piano, trombone, trumpet, and tenor – all used in ways that are nicely more complicated than just standard funk! Marcinek's a bit like Eddie Roberts – in that he's a guitarist who's got clearly got some great chops and a very wide range – which often pushes the music into more jazz-based territory, even though most of the tunes are short and funky too! The set really draws a lot from Joe's strong sense of color and tone – and titles include "Vitalizing", "Dog", "Bella", "Cool Down", "Lagniappe", and "Bulldog". LP, Vinyl record album

A well-titled set, given that the album is Soulive's first away from the Blue Note label – a surprisingly tight outing done for the mostly-mellow Concord imprint, and a real back-to-basics outing that we totally love! The group's in fine fine form for the record – working with that core classic intensity that we first loved way back in their indie years – an approach that's gotten a bit too overly jamming or muddled up on other records, and which is presented here in a nicely stripped-down approach that only adds in a bit of extra guest work from time to time. Reggie Watts, Chaka Khan, and Ivan Neville all make appearances on the record – but honestly, what we still love best is the record's core grooving from the trio of Evans, Krasno, and Evans. Hate the cover, though – but whaddayagonnado? A really unique groove from Troy "Trombone Shorty" Andrews – a mix of New Orleans funk, straighter jazz, and some hip, offbeat elements – all brought together in the space of an album that's got a Crescent City brass band in its soul, but which comes off with the tighter sound of a deep funk combo! Shorty plays mostly trombone – but also handles a bit of trumpet and keyboards too – and other core instrumentation includes saxes, guitar, and some very bold rhythms – all in a mostly instrumental groove, but featuring vocals from Shorty at a few spots, and guest work from Marc Broussard, Allen Toussaint, and Lenny Kravitz on a track apiece. Most cuts are nice and short, which keeps things focused – and titles include "Fallin", "The Cure", "Where Y'At", "In The 6th", "Neph", "Suburbia", "Backatown", "On Your Way Down", "Hurricane Season", "Right To Complain", and "One Night Only". The second installment in the Videoclub – and like the first, a set of tracks that definitely lives up to the vintage action styles promised on the cover! The tracks are heavy on influences from classic crime, cop, and kung fu soundtracks – served up as shorter instrumental tracks that also make a nice nod to 70s sound library styles too – all with production that's totally great, and right on the money – so that the music never sounds too contemporary at all, and really has the spirit of analog funk from back in the day!
