DiazporaPing Pong Powerplay ... LP
Legere (France), 2020. New Copy ... $19.99
No time for table games here – as Diazpora jump right in the groove from the very first note – working with a sweet 70s funk approach to their music, which means lots of riffing guitar, funky basslines, and horns punctuating the keys – all while lead singer Axel Maximilian Fiege sings in this very strong way – able to go deep one minute, inflect a falsetto the next – all with these twists and turns that make him way more than just another soul singer working with a funk band! Axel's strong presence in the lead really gives the whole thing a heck of a lot of power and shape – and titles include "Hit Me", "The Bachelor", "Hangin On", "Ready To Go", "Play The Ball", "The Olympians", and "You Shot Me Down". Delvon Lamarr Organ TrioClose But No Cigar ... CD
Colemine, 2018. New Copy ... $10.99
An organ trio, and one with plenty of soul – romping drums, riffing guitar, and some mighty sweet work on the Hammond by Delvon Lamarr! This is the first we've ever heard of the group, but they're rock solid and right on the money – working with a lean, hard style that's completely classic, but also a bit contemporary too – maybe swinging in the best sort of space between the Jack McDuff Quartet of the 60s and the Sugarman Three group of Desco Records fame! David McGraw handles the drums with a clear love of funk, and Jimmy James is wonderfully wicked on guitar – never trying to dominate too much, as there's no need – given how much he brings to the overall groove. Delvon's a hell of an organist too – the kind that knows that a little can often go much farther than a lot when handling the electric keys – which he does to set up some sweet solos on cuts that include "Ain't It Funky", "Al Greenery", "Can I Change My Mind", "Walk On By", "Between The Mustard & The Mayo", "Raymond Brings The Greens", and "Little Booker T". Tito Lopez ComboStill Smokin' ... CD
Tito's Record (UK), 2004. Used ... $9.99
The best album to date from funky drummer Tito Lopez – aka Harbans Srih, one of the best players on the UK deep funk scene! The album's got a laidback, tripped-out, slow funk style that's really great – very much in a blacksploitation soundtrack mode, with heavy Harbans drums on the bottom, lots of wah wah and keys in the middle, and some soaring horn passages over the top! The sound of this one is really right too – produced with just the right amount of dirt in the mix, so that the tunes snake around with a solid rootsy funky feel. Titles include "Smokey Bacon", "Ronaldo", "Get Zigged", "Ruud Boy", "High Plains", "Green Chilli", "Right On Brother", and "India's Groove". CD

✨✧ DJ Cam QuartetEssential (yellow vinyl pressing) ... LP
Attytude/Diggers Factory (France), 2000s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great collection of work from one of our favorite side of the many talents of DJ Cam – his Quartet material, which is a more jazz-based take on the hip hop modes of his early days! Right from the start, Cam had a great ear for a classic groove – and here, he takes on a set of classics from the 70s, but set to his own beats and scratches, mixed with work on keyboards from Eric Legnini, trumpet from Alex Tassel, and guitar from Christian Brun! There's a bit of vocals on the record from Inlove, but most of the tracks are instrumental – and titles include "Think Twice", "Everybody Loves The Sunshine", "So What", "Montara", "Rebirth Of Cool", "You've Got To Have Freedom", and "Little Sunflower". ✨✧ El Michels AffairReturn To The 37th Chamber (with bonus download) ... LP
Big Crown, 2017. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
El Michels return again to the Wu-Tang chambers – and the results this time might even be better than before! Wu-Tang forged their initial sound out of a love of offbeat samples and unusual funk – so it's only fitting that one of the hippest funk groups around strip the music right down to its roots – performing new live interpretations with their wickedly sinister groove – all at a level that makes the whole thing a slow funk masterpiece from start to finish! El Michels has always been one of the few real standouts in the deep funk scene – and it's records like this that keep us loving them so much. And even though the set features vocals from Lee Fields on two tracks, and Lady Wray on one more – the instrumental groove is what dominates and draws our ears, on tracks that include "Tears", "Sipped Up", "Shadow Boxing", "Iron Man", "4th Chamber", "Shaolin Brew", "Drums For Sale", "Verbal Intercourse", "Tearz", and "Wu Tang Clan Ain't Nuthin Ta F Wit". Ubiquity, 2012/2020. New Copy (pic cover)... Out Of Stock
That's the Incredible Tabla Band, not the Incredible Bongo Band – a very cool project by Shawn Lee that takes off on the famous bongo-led funk act of the 70s! Both cuts here are remakes of famous funk tunes by the IBB – and sound almost exactly like the originals right down at the core, from the horns, to the drums, to the cool organ swirls – save for the fact that instead of bongos, you'll hear tablas – and maybe a bit of sitar on the side, to further the Indian-styled groove of the music! ✨✧ SorcerersSorcerers ... LP
ATA (UK), 2015. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A contemporary record, but one we'd rank right up there with the moodiest, most exotic African funk albums of the 70s – especially the gems we've discovered through the Ethiopiques series! These guys play in a style that certainly references Ethiopian reeds and keyboard work of the 70s, but with a groove that's even funkier too – an understanding of the possibilities of a deep funk combo, but expressed through a much richer, more organic vibe – so that nothing's ever forced or faked at all, and the music is wonderfully captivating throughout. Production is perfect for this sort of set – and titles include "Pinch Of The Death Nerve", "Viking Of 5th Avenue", "Cave Of Brahma", "Night Of The Sorcerer", and "Suur Toll". ✨✧ Scone Cash PlayersAs The Screw Turns ... LP
Flamingo Time/Daptone, 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The Scone Cash Players have a name that's a but unusual, but a sound that's right on the money – thanks to some massive Hammond work from leader Adam Scone, and lots of tight saxophone lines from Ian Hendrickson-Smith – who you'll remember from his work in the Dap-Kings! The groove here is nice and gritty – a bit messier and muddier than Daptone, but definitely in a stretch of the funky universe – and although the group jam instrumentally on a number of tracks, they also get a bit of vocal help along the way – from Naomi Shelton, Jason Joshua, and John Dokes. Titles include "As The Screw Turns", "Bokum Hi", "Dr Red Teeth", "Canned Champagne", "Smoke & Nails", "The Crown Divide", and "Brass Tacks". LP, Vinyl record album

B Crack (Netherlands), 2016. Used ... $6.99
A Dutch combo with some mighty tight horns – trumpet, tenor, and baritone sax – all forged together in a strongly soulful frontline! The undercurrent of the group's groove has a bit of fuzzy guitar right on the rhythms – almost in an early Baker Brothers way – but the overall sound is more complicated, with some sweet keyboard lines that sometimes get nice and playful, and provide a strong instrumental current at just the right moments. A few cuts have vocals, but we're much more partial to the instrumentals – as the vocals seem to stiffen the sound slightly. Titles include "Sideways", "Give It Back", "Balls", "Free Fluid Infusion", "Second Line", "Ali's Shuffle", "Fever", and "Buffalo". CD

✨✧ Stanton MooreFlyin' The Koop ... CD
Blue Thumb, 2002. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Tight funky grooves from the jamband underground – one of the strongest albums of this type to come out in years! Stanton Moore's at the head of a small all-star combo that includes Skerik and Karl Denson on sax, Brian Seeger on guitar, and Chris Wood on bass – and Stanton's work on drums is excellent, dancing around the kit with a fantastic flourish, jamming the groove in just the right way to bring out the freest funkiest work in the two-sax frontline. The rhythms are a mix of Bay Area funk, New Orleans soul, and a bit of classic soul jazz – and the production of the set is excellent, nicely stripped down and spare, despite the major label status of the record, which often means a bit too much muddling around in the mix! Titles include "Let's Go", "Tang The Hump", "Launcho Diablo", "Prairie Sunset", "Things Fall Apart", and "Hunch". CD

Ben PiraniHow Do I Talk To My Brother? ... CD
Colemine, 2018. New Copy ... $11.99
A great little soul set by a singer we're betting will have a long run in the funky underground – a relative newcomer, but one who comes across with a power that really belies his time in the studio! Ben Piriani's music has this righteous, full-on groove that reminds us a lot of that moment when Chicago soul was cusping at the end of the 60s – hitting more progressive themes, and really exploding with power – which is definitely what Ben and the group do here, thanks to sharp, soulful backings – and lots of backup vocals that almost put Piriani's lead in the company of groups like The Artistics or Lost Generation. Unlike other singers who try to go back, but usually just go for the easy marks, Ben's really got his sound just right here – and is one of the best blue-eyed soul singers we've heard in years. Titles include "How Do I Talk To My Brother", "Light Of My Life", "Try Love", "Not One More Tear", "Can't Get Out Your Own Way", "You Brought The Rain", and "Dreamin's For Free". CD

Trombone ShortyBackatown ... CD
Verve, 2010. Used ... $5.99
A really unique groove from Troy "Trombone Shorty" Andrews – a mix of New Orleans funk, straighter jazz, and some hip, offbeat elements – all brought together in the space of an album that's got a Crescent City brass band in its soul, but which comes off with the tighter sound of a deep funk combo! Shorty plays mostly trombone – but also handles a bit of trumpet and keyboards too – and other core instrumentation includes saxes, guitar, and some very bold rhythms – all in a mostly instrumental groove, but featuring vocals from Shorty at a few spots, and guest work from Marc Broussard, Allen Toussaint, and Lenny Kravitz on a track apiece. Most cuts are nice and short, which keeps things focused – and titles include "Fallin", "The Cure", "Where Y'At", "In The 6th", "Neph", "Suburbia", "Backatown", "On Your Way Down", "Hurricane Season", "Right To Complain", and "One Night Only". ✨✧ Brownout Presents – Brown SabbathBrown Sabbath 2 ... LP
Ubiquity, 2016. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A sweet return to Brown Sabbath territory – that wicked blend of deep funk rhythms and fuzzy guitar, served up by the Brownout collective! The groove has some of the Latin elements that you'd know from Adrian Quesada's other work – but the rising guitar lines dominate a lot more – as do the horns, which crest nicely above the music, to ensure that there's a bit more soul here than on the original Black Sabbath versions of the songs! Yet the vocals by Alex Marrero are also sometimes right in Ozzy territory – which brings things back to base a bit – making for one of the most unusual takes on the music of Black Sabbath you'll ever hope to hear. Titles include "Fairies Wear Boots", "Snowblind", "Supernaut", "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath", "Sweet Leaf", "Electric Funeral", and "Children Of The Grave". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Kaleta & Super Yamba BandMedaho ... CD
Ubiquity, 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
That's a pretty trippy cover on the front, and an image that really sums up the vibe of this excellent record from Kaleta – a set that's even sharper and funkier than any of his previous efforts – yet which has some nicely way out qualities too! The instrumentation is heavy on elements from old school funk – both Afro and Anglo – but the execution is very individual, and graced strongly by the wicked guitar work of the leader – who steps out in front of the band with the majesty of some West African genius from years back – calling out boldly with his lyrics, and turning out guitar parts that clearly know the farther reaches of the fuzzy spectrum, but which also never stray too far from the groove to get lost in their own space! Everything is tight and right on the money – and the record packs a lot more punch than some of its contemporaries, as you'll hear on titles that include "Hungry Man Angry Man", "Jibiti", "Goyito", "Medaho", "La Guele", "Adjoto", and "Gogo Rock". ✨✧ King Britt/Philadelphia ExperimentKing Britt Presents Philadelphia Experiment Remixed ... CD
Ropeadope, 2002. Used ... Just Sold Out!
An incredible record – far greater than we even expected! The setup is simple: King Britt and his crew remix the tapes from 2001's experimental jazz jam session by a trio of fellow Philadelphians – drummer Ahmir Thompson (The Roots), jazz bassist Christian McBride, and keyboardist Uri Caine. Britt's really blown his top here – taking the original album (great in its own right), and turning it into a set of cosmic grooves that bear almost no relation to the initial work, yet still keep its soulful heart. The depth of the project is stunning – way more than just simple remix tricks, and a whole new level of expression that shows why Philly is fast becoming the music capitol of the 21st Century. Includes work by Rob Yancey, Charlie Dark, Phillip Charles, Oba Funke, Vikter Duplaix, The Randy Weston Experience, DJ Ghe, and Britt himself – with titles that include "South Street", "Paul Edwards The Orange Line (lle lfe)", "(Re)Moved (Oba Funke Far Re-Moved dub)", "Diamond Street", "Philadelphia Experiment (rmx)", "Delaware Avenue", "Miles Hit (Rob Life mix)", "Broad & Cecil B Moore", "Brown Street", and "Groover The III (the theme to massagejawn.com)". ✨✧ Ernie Hawks & The Soul InvestigatorsScorpio Man (yellow vinyl pressing) ... LP
Timmion (Finland), 2018. New Copy ... About August 28, 2020
Ernie Hawks looks right out of the 70s on the cover – with his long hair, fringe jacket, and fiercely-held flute – which he mixes here with some great grooves from the Soul Investigators, in a vibe that's maybe even better than classic! The album's all instrumental, and has this fantastic sound that's way different than the usual contemporary funk set – nicely trippy at times, with echo and other effects applied to the instrumentation – and a strong ear for the overall sound, not just the power of each member of the group! Hawks is often out front, soloing with a funky flute sound – but he also handles vibes, pianoman, and trombone – in a very cool lineup that also has Martti Vesala on wah-wah trumpet, and Jimi Tenor on saxophone. All tunes are original, and they're really fantastic – each the kind that if you found on a rare soundtrack or lost jazz album, you'd be willing to pay plenty to own. Titles include "Still Trippin", "Bag Full Of Miracles", "Cold Turkey Time", "Scorpio Walk", "Windy City Blues", "Journey To The Bottom", and "Street Of Tears". LP, Vinyl record album

Alex PudduGolden Age Of Danish Pornography Vol 3 ... CD
Schema (Italy), 2016. New Copy Gatefold ... $12.99
A great third chapter in the Danish Pornography series by Alex Puddu – and, like the others, music that was recorded to accompany the re-release of some classic adult films from the 70s! As you'd guess from the title and project, the sound here is very retro overall – wicked funk that works very hard to hit all the right slinky and sleazy notes needed to accompany the images of grown-up fun on the screen – with plenty of electric touches on a range of different keyboards and guitar (and even a bit of electric sitar, too) – in grooves that have a nicely building vibe, but which never try too hard to overtake the visual energy of the moment. In other words (if we can extend this metaphor even further), Alex is great at the foreplay, keeps things going a long time, and really knows how to build to a musical climax – on titles that include "Lesbian Lovers", "The Swinger Generation", "Cowboys Do It Better", "Black Orgasm", "Seductive Star", "Africa Scream", "Exotic Love", "Behind Closed Doors", and "Sex Bar". Heavy funk from Smuggler Brothers – an Italian group who start out in the vintage cop/crime modes of 70s soundtracks, but then bring in a whole host of different elements to play in the mix!
