✨✧ El Michels Affair & Black ThoughtGlorious Game ... LP
Big Crown, 2023. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Leon Michels has given us plenty of hip hop-inspired funk over the years, but this might be his first real hip hop project overall – a stunning set that mixes the live instrumentation of El Michels Affair with rhymes from Black Thought of The Roots – all at a level that might well set a new standard for both styles of music! The grooves are great – that subtle sense of drama that Michels always brings to the music – informed by old school action scores, but with the lean energy of a funky 45 – and although Black Thought has had live backing before, the El Michels approach here really seems to unlock something different in his vocals – maybe more power and drama than we might have guessed. Titles include "I'm Still Somehow", "Miracle", "Glorious Game", "That Girl", "The Weather", "I Would Never", "Grateful", and "Hollow Way". LP, Vinyl record album

Dan Hastie & Terin EctorCrows Height – Madlib Invazion Library Series Vol 5 ... LP
Madlib Invazion, 2023. New Copy ... $21.99 23.99
There's plenty of drums and percussion on this sweet set of funky instrumentals – played both by Dan Hastie and Terin Ector, who also each handle bass, guitar, and keyboards too – an approach that makes for a very tight, wonderfully unified vibe on the set! The only other instrumentation is a bit of light strings added by Thomas Lea – who uses those elements in a great way, just to touch up the funky energy at the core – maybe inflecting things with a slight cinematic vibe, but never in a way that's overwhelming or too rich at all. The whole thing's nice and funky, yet also has a standout vibe from others in this Madlib sound library series – with titles that include "Mirage", "Timeless Tales", "Dorado", "Deep Waters", "Telescopics", "Better Days", "Blue Shade", "Vision", "When I Go", and "Streetwise". ✨✧ New MastersoundsKeb Darge Presents The New Mastersounds ... CD
BBE/Deep Funk (UK), 2001. Used ... Out Of Stock
The debut full length from England's funkiest combo! The New Mastersounds are a current group – but they've got a deep funk approach that puts them in the same camp as 60s funky 45 combos, or that of more recent acts in the new funk underground, like those on Desco or Soul Fire records. The combo's got a core groove center of bass, drums, guitar, and Hammond organ – augmented from track to track by additional sax, trumpet, and funky flute work, plus the occasional vocal. Most tunes are instrumental, and preserve the late 60s/early 70s funky 45 sound very well – with plenty of heavy drum beats, wah wah and tightly plucked guitar lines, and fast and furious bass parts to keep the whole set bouncing around like a baby in a car seat on a bumpy road! Titles include "Nervous", "Python", "Miracles", "Bondo Samba", "Hot Dog", "So Many Pies", "The Rooster", "Coffee Providers", and "GT". CD

✨✧ Misha PanfilovAtlantico (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Miraaz (Estonia), 2023. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The music of Misha Panfilov just gets deeper and deeper with each new release – and here, he's light years away from the funk of his earlier sets, and much more in the realm of spiritual jazz! The set's got a vibe that's almost in the Carlos Nino side of the spectrum, but which also resonates strongly with Misha's amazing sense of sound – served up by a group that features Misha on guitars, keyboards, organs, harpsichord, ngoni, and a whole host of other elements – joined by the trumpet of Rafael Andrade, tenor of Francisco Aguilar, bass of Ricardo Dias, and drums of Francisco Coelho. Tunes are long and carry elements of Brazilian and other global styles – but often in a way that evokes cinematic modes too, although things are much deeper than any sort of easy soundtrack reference to such styles. The whole album's a masterpiece of beauty that we never would have expected from Panfilov a few years back – and titles include "Vertical", "Alegria Em Movimento", "Caleidoscpopio", "Domingo Magico" and "Para O Sol". Trio ValoreReturn Of The Iron Monkey (clear vinyl pressing) ... LP
Record Kicks (Italy), 2008. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 24.99
Slammin Hammond from Trio Valore – a really old school combo with a sweet mix of mod and funky rhythms! The group features heavy drums from Steve White – with a groove that stretches back to his many years on the hip side of the UK scene – and remaining trio members include Damon Minchella on guitar and Seamus Beaghen on Hammond – both players who more than keep up with White's hard-hitting approach, and really make the set cook up strongly throughout! A number of cuts are covers, but there's also some great originals too – and the whole thing has the feel of a hip 60s set in a small Soho club – but filtered through a generation that also understands funk as well. Titles include "Rehab", "Hola Muneca", "Fuoco", "Hip Hug Her", "Anxious Mo Fo", "All About My Girl", "Return Of The Iron Monkey", "Dam Square", and "Miracolo". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Whatitdo Archive GroupPalace Of A Thousand Sounds ... CD
Record Kicks (Italy), 2023. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A really cool shift for this very hip group – a set of sweet exotica numbers, after a previous record of blacksploitation grooves – yet one that's every bit as funky as the previous album, thanks to all the right instrumental touches! At the top, the music has lots of older exotica touches – percussion, vibes, harp, and other exotic elements – but at the bottom, there's some heavier grooves – working with the sounds on the top, all at a level that's maybe somewhere in the territory of a hip kung fu soundtrack – or as if Martin Denny were asked to score a film called Shaft In Hawaii! Titles include "Exotique", "Sun Harp", "Astra-Desia", "Enter The Palace", "Iron Tusk", "Mirage", "Secrets In The Sand", and "The Second Moon". CD

✨✧ VariousWax Poetics Japan Compiled Series – Spinel ... CD
P-Vine (Japan), 2012. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A really great package of contemporary funky cuts – put together in collaboration between the folks at Wax Poetics Japan and P-Vine Records – and filled with an international assortment of artists that all lean very heavily on the best spirit of 70s funk and soul! We love the albums by almost all of the artists in the set – but somehow, these individual cuts sound even better in the company of each other – running through a long set list of 17 tracks in all, with a very funky spirit throughout! Titles include "Chase The Dream" by Funkshone, "Don't Take It Too Hard" by Tuomo, "I Believe In Miracles" by Eddie Roberts & The Fire Eaters, "Where I'm At" by Push with Candi Staton, "Self Reliance" by The Liberators, "The Bouncer" by New Cool Collective, "Yellow Soul Force" by Mountain Mocha Kilimanjaro, "Pick Up The Pieces (parts 1 & 2)" by Osaka Monaurail, "Above The Law" by Federation Of The Disco Pimps, and "This Time" by Baby Charles.
