Charles BradleyBlack Velvet ... LP
Dunham/Daptone, 2016. New Copy ... $15.99 18.99
The great Charles Bradley left this planet all too soon – and although we've got this final album of music to enjoy, it's only a partial consolation for Bradley's early departure! The set's maybe a bit like some of the albums of Otis Redding material that were issued after his passing – in that there's some cuts here that were singles, mixed with unissued songs that really show Bradley on top of his game – working strongly with the Menehan Street Band at a level that really has us wanting more! Some of these tunes have a sharply righteous vibe – maybe even more edge than before from Charles – which makes the whole thing not just a completely essential addition to his catalog, but also a way of pointing towards a future that might have been. Titles include "Can't Fight The Feeling", "Luv Jones", "I Feel A Change", "Black Velvet", "Fly Little Girl", "Victim Of Love (electric version)", "Slip Away", and "Heart Of Gold". ✨✧ Charles BradleyNo Time For Dreaming (plus download) ... LP
Dunham/Daptone, 2011. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Gritty, powerful raw soul from Charles Bradley – the full length debut from the 62-year-old Brooklyn singer – backed perfectly by The Menahan Street Band! It's incredible, a record that sounds just as rawly emotional and impeccably soulful in 2011 as it would have in 1971 – much like the work Sharon Jones and The Dap-Kings, there's no mistaking this for anything but the real deal. Rough hewn in beautifully so – with perfect, funky backing by team Menahan. A timeless treasure! Titles include "In You (I Found A Love)", "I Believe In Your Love", "The Telephone Song", "Golden Rule", "How Long", "Trouble In The Land", "Since Our Last Goodbye", "Heartaches And Pain", "The World" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Menahan Street BandMake The Road By Walking ... LP
Dunham/Daptone, 2008. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A bold slice of work from the Daptone musical universe – a hip project that features work from members of The Dap Kings, El Michels Affair, Budos Band, and Antibalas – all put together with a range of sounds that really show the full spectrum of their styles! The groove's quite unique – even for the ultra-cool Daptone scene – as Menahan Street Band bring in bits of dub, funk, Latin, and Afro-styled sounds to their music – often working with a sense of spareness that seems influenced by 70s Ethiopia, but which comes off with a heavier Wu-inspired sound! There's no vocals at all – just really raw, stark instrumental bits – played on vibes, organ, tenor, flute, piano, trumpet, and some kickass percussion – produced with just the right sort of grit to make all tunes sound great. Titles include "Tired Of Fighting", "Home Again", "Montego Sunset", "The Traitor", "The Contendor", "Birds", "Esma", and "Going The Distance". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Charles BradleyChanges (with download) ... LP
Dunham/Daptone, 2016. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Jaw-dropping work from Charles Bradley – a stunning album that's maybe his best so far – and that's saying a hell of a lot, given the quality of his previous work! There's a focus and power here that really puts Charles on top – from the bold statement at the start of the record, to the range of expressive, emotive lyrics all the way through – given superb support in a range of deep soul and funky currents from the likes of Budos Band, Menehan Street Band, Gospel Queens, Saun & Starr, and Sha La Das! Yet none of these guests ever feel like they're sharing the spotlight with Charles – because, like the James Brown Show of the late 60s, all these super-strong talents are working in constellation around Bradley's majesty – a bold soul vision that's never burned this brightly before. Titles include "Ain't It A Sin", "Nobody But You", "Good To Be Back Home", "Things We Do For Love", "Crazy Love", and "Slow Love" – plus a cover of Black Sabbath's "Changes". LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes download.)

✨✧ Sha La DasLove In The Wind ... LP
Dunham/Daptone, 2018. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The cover sticker bills this one as sounding like a lost collaboration between the Beach Boys and Delfonics – although for our money, we'd lean a bit more towards the latter – as the Sha La Das have a surprisingly strong approach to harmony soul! Instrumentation and production are much leaner than Brian Wilson ever would have used – more in the Daptone mode you'd expect from the label, and from the great backings from the Menahan Street Band – who are wonderfully restrained here, and really just let the vocals of the quartet shine through in a mighty nice way! None of these guys is as strong as Poogie Hart of The Delfonics (but then again – who could be?) – yet the group really absorbs the best spirit of those days when harmony soul sounded best in a spare indie label setting – which is exactly the way that Daptone presents them. Titles include "Open My Eyes", "Just For A Minute", "Okay My Love", "Those Years Are Over", "Do What", "Carnival", and "You Never Know Whether". LP, Vinyl record album
