✨✧ Mighty ImperialsThunder Chicken (Desco) ... CD
Desco, 2000. Used ... Out Of Stock
Super-heavy funk from late great Desco Records scene! The Mighty Imperials were one of the best funky 45 groups to record for mighty deep funk Desco label – and their first album never properly saw the light of day, thanks to some pressing and distribution messups before the demise of the company. Now, the whole thing's finally out officially – a funky treasure that sounds like a lost 70s gem, and which has almost as much mystique, given the status of the original record! The core combo features organ, drums, bass, and super-heavy guitar – and the album also features them recording with some additional vocal help from Joseph Henry! Henry sings in a mode that's very similar to Lee Fields' work with the deep funk scene – and his vocals are on a number of tracks on the album – leaving the rest as groovy funky instrumentals with a nice heavy late 60s sock-boogaloo sound! Includes covers of "Never Found A Girl" and "Cold Sweat" – plus originals "Soul Buster pt 1", "Chico's Barnyard", "Kick The Blanket", "Thunder Chicken", and "Joseph's Popcorn". CD

✨✧ Other Side(Don't Look Back) Behind The Shack... ... CD
Desco, 1998. Used ... Out Of Stock
More excellent hard funky grooves from the Desco stable of artists – a tight bunch of modern funkateers who are transforming the field with hardcore, old school, purist funk grooves. The Other Side previously released a single or two on the label, and they've made a name for themselves by specializing hard funky stripped-down JB's sound grooves. Lots of hard vamping, with good instrumental solos, and tight rhythmic guitar and bass playing. Mostly instrumental, with some chanting and shouting over the top of things. Pressed on heavy vinyl, and with the cuts "Snake Bite", "The Butcher", "Cornbread", "Diggin' Up The Yard", and "Spying On the Devil". CD

✨✧ Delvon Lamarr Organ TrioClose But No Cigar ... LP
Colemine, 2018. New Copy Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
An organ trio, and one with plenty of soul – romping drums, riffing guitar, and some mighty sweet work on the Hammond by Delvon Lamarr! This is the first we've ever heard of the group, but they're rock solid and right on the money – working with a lean, hard style that's completely classic, but also a bit contemporary too – maybe swinging in the best sort of space between the Jack McDuff Quartet of the 60s and the Sugarman Three group of Desco Records fame! David McGraw handles the drums with a clear love of funk, and Jimmy James is wonderfully wicked on guitar – never trying to dominate too much, as there's no need – given how much he brings to the overall groove. Delvon's a hell of an organist too – the kind that knows that a little can often go much farther than a lot when handling the electric keys – which he does to set up some sweet solos on cuts that include "Ain't It Funky", "Al Greenery", "Can I Change My Mind", "Walk On By", "Between The Mustard & The Mayo", "Raymond Brings The Greens", and "Little Booker T". ✨✧ New MastersoundsKeb Darge Presents The New Mastersounds ... CD
BBE/Deep Funk (UK), 2001. Used ... Out Of Stock
The debut full length from England's funkiest combo! The New Mastersounds are a current group – but they've got a deep funk approach that puts them in the same camp as 60s funky 45 combos, or that of more recent acts in the new funk underground, like those on Desco or Soul Fire records. The combo's got a core groove center of bass, drums, guitar, and Hammond organ – augmented from track to track by additional sax, trumpet, and funky flute work, plus the occasional vocal. Most tunes are instrumental, and preserve the late 60s/early 70s funky 45 sound very well – with plenty of heavy drum beats, wah wah and tightly plucked guitar lines, and fast and furious bass parts to keep the whole set bouncing around like a baby in a car seat on a bumpy road! Titles include "Nervous", "Python", "Miracles", "Bondo Samba", "Hot Dog", "So Many Pies", "The Rooster", "Coffee Providers", and "GT". CD
