✨✧ Black PumasBlack Pumas (2CD deluxe edition) ... CD
ATO, 2019. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Soulful sounds from Black Pumas – a collaboration between singer Eric Burton and the great Adrian Quesada – the latter an instrumentalist and producer that you'll know from a variety of different funky projects over the years! This set might well be Adrian's ticket to the big time – as Burton's a singer with a very strong range, and great crossover potential – echoing Al Green one minute, hitting deeper vibes the next – and working alongside small combo backing that has plenty of laidback guitar lines and warm keyboards, all produced with the usual Quesada touch! Titles include "Oct 33", "Fire", "Colors", "Know You Better", "Stay Gold", "Old Man", "Confines", and "Touch The Sky". Expanded version features lots of bonus material – including "Eleanor Rigby", "Ain't No Love In The Heart Of The City", "Fast Car", "Black Cat", and "I Am Ready" – plus "live in studio" versions of "Confines", "Colors", and "Oct 33". ✨✧ DeRobertGot The Goods ... CD
GED Soul, 2015. Used ... Out Of Stock
A killer solo set from DeRobert – a cat you might know as the lead singer for the Half-Truths, but an artist who's maybe even greater here on his own! The style of the record is more blacksploitation soul than the straighter funk of DeRobert's other records – this cool, crispy sound on the rhythms that merges 70s inspiration with contemporary execution – an approach that gives the singer a lot more edge, and a lot more bite than before! The album's relatively short – only 6 full tracks, plus intro and outro numbers – but it may well deliver twice as much as any other DeRobert record that's come before. Titles include "Ask Of Me", "Let It Go", "Life Support", "Moody Tuesday", and "The More & More". CD

✨✧ DrawbarsOne Finger Only ... CD
Code Red, 2023. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The Drawbars definitely work here with more than just one finger – and they deliver a really great groove, with a style that's a nice change from some of their contemporaries! Part of the trio's uniqueness lies in the vintage keyboards handled by Chris Haertel – who has a way of going for tones that are nicely less familiar, and sometimes delivered with a spacious approach that's a cool change from just jamming work on organ or piano! The rhythms are often equally laidback, yet still tight and funky – served up with bass from David Nesselhauf and drums from Julian Gutjahr – on titles that include "Art Form", "Shout", "Two Face", "Cat Call", "One Finger Only", "Let's Do It Again", "Skyline", and "One Twenty Five". CD

Fusion AffairVenom ... LP
Chuwanaga (France), 2022. New Copy ... $26.99 29.99
Fusion Affair are a group who definitely take their name seriously – as the album's got a mix of keyboards and other electric instrumentation that really lives up to the legacy of jazz fusion – yet also has a way of coming across here with a nicely contemporary vibe! The group's inspirations are as much 80s as they are 70s – yet they've also got more of a 21st Century sense of rhythms, which means that some of the best cuts almost have a contemporary clubby sort of groove. Mathieu Guillot handles Fender Rhodes and a range of other keyboards on the set – in a lineup that also includes guitar, bass, drums, percussion, and additional keys – on the tracks "Venom", "Bounce", "Missing Cat", "Bougie Noire", "Dasha", and "Fruits Rouges". Adrian Younge & Ali Shaheed Muhammad with AzymuthAzymuth – Jazz Is Dead 4 ... CD
Jazz Is Dead, 2020. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
A fantastic combination of funky grooves – the studio talents of Adrian Younge & Ali Shaheed Muhammad, and the Brazilian-tinged fusion of the legendary Azymuth! The jazzy trio are in great form here – tunes that are lean, and which really offer up all the best aspects that the group brought to their music back in the late 70s and early 80s – spun with a slightly different format by the lineup of Alex Malheiros on bass, Ivan Mamao Conti on drums, and Linklon Kiko Contentino on Fender Rhodes and keyboards – but handled perfectly by Adrian and Ali in the studio – with just the right sort of sound to avoid some of the slicker production that the group had on some of their other American recordings from years back. All tunes are new originals – and titles include "Pulando Corda", "Friendship Samba", "Apocolyptico", "Cat Jump", "Fall Afternoon", "Ao Redor Do Samba", and "Sumare". CD

✨✧ VariousBest Of Original Gravity Vol 1 (3CD set) ... CD
Original Gravity (UK), 2024. New Copy 3CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A totally great run of grooves – most of which were only initially available on expensive import singles, and which together represent a fantastic stretch of music from this very cool British label! Original Gravity is the brainchild of Neil Anderson, a cat who really knows his groove – whether it be 60s mod, 70s funk, Latin soul, rocksteady, and other great sounds from the past – all classic styles that come off together strongly in this overstuffed set! Anderson had a hand in nearly all the acts here – different combos and projects that have recorded all these different tracks, in different modes, for Original Gravity over the years – finally brought together here as a demonstration of the great, and sometimes overlooked, work of this excellent imprint. The 3CD set features 69 tracks in all, all on CD for the first time ever – with work from Brentford Rd Soul Rebels, Curtis Baker & The Bravehearts, Floyd James & the GTs, Nestor Alvarez, Luchito, Junior Dell & The D-Lites, So Cal Soul Stars, Jodie, Melvin Craig, and others. ✨✧ VariousLet's Boogaloo Vol 3 – Even Mo' Funk, Soul, Dancefloor Jazz, All-Time Stompers & Future Classics ... CD
Record Kicks (Italy), Late 1960s/Early 1970s/2006. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Easily the best collection so far in the Let's Boogaloo series – and one that's overflowing with great older work from the 60s and 70s! We've liked the other Let's Boogaloo sets plenty, but this one's even more deep funk oriented than before – and not only features some great rare funky 45 material, but also a few great sound library rarities – mixed in alongside the newer cuts that Record Kicks always champions, done in a mix of funky and mod styles overall! Previously unreleased titles include "Funky Skunk" by Pete Thomas, "Beatcoma" by Alan Moorehouse, "Jazz Cat" and "Latin Soul Strut" by D Glover & G Crockett, and "Miss Augusta" by Minivip – and other cuts include "Hot Pants Party" by Guy Morris, "Look What You Can Get" by Funky Nassau, "Don't Let This Happen" by Fred Hughes, "Say Yeah Yeah" by Yvonne Fair, "Getting Down" by Brand New Rhythm, "Ain't Gonna Tell No More" by Stoned Soul Picnic, and "Oh My" by The Dansettes. 12 tracks in all! (Funky Compilations, Deep Funk) CD
(Out of print and sealed.)
