✨✧ Abstract OrchestraMadvillain Vol 2 (with bonus download) ... LP
ATA (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $23.99
A really great take on the music of Madvillain – that famous collaboration between Madlib & MF Doom – served up here in a mostly instrumental mode that's heavy on funk and jazz! You'll definitely recognize the tunes in the set, but the presentation is very different – almost as if someone's gone back to the music, stripped it down to core samples, then worked those back up again with a new sort of energy! The group's directed by Rob Mitchell – clearly the genius behind the whole project – and solos are by James Russell on tenor and flute, Simon Bobby Beddoe on trumpet, Jim Corry on alto, and George Cooper on piano and keyboards. Titles include "Meat Grinder", "Eye", "Figaro", "Can't Reform Em", "Madmix 3", "Rainbows", "Fire In The Hole", "Rhinestone Cowboy", "Operation Lifesaver", and "Borrowed Time". LP, Vinyl record album

Afro Latin Vintage OrchestraPulsion ... LP
Ubiquity, 2014. Near Mint- 2LP ... Just Sold Out!
A darker groove than usual from this hip European combo – a record that still has their commitment to global sounds at its core, but which also comes across with these great 70s electric modes too – almost echoes of Dark Magus Miles Davis and Sextant Herbie Hancock – thanks to loads of cool keyboards and fuzzed-out production! The acoustic elements resonate wonderfully with the electric ones – so that percussion, bass, horns, and strings add a rich organic level next to the guitar, Fender Rhodes, and Wurlitzer – blending beautifully with a musical vision that really surprises us, given the earlier work from this group – a much richer sound, and one that's got us loving them way more than before. Titles include "Kagemusha", "Rituel", "Pulsion", "Complot", "Shaman", "Drama", "En Sursis", "Code Panthera", "French Connexion", "Homo Analog", and "Resurrection". Afrodyssey OrchestraUnder The Sun (with download) ... LP
Altercat (Germany), 2019. New Copy ... $24.99
Great diaspora sounds from Afrodyssey Orchestra – a group who bring so much more to their music than most of their contemporaries – in ways that both tap into their native cultural history in Greece, and really open up some of the deeper jazz currents of their songs! Instrumentation includes the percussion elements you might expect – but we're even more captivated by the work on keyboards and tenor – which really sparkle throughout, and which make the record often feel like some futurist fusion reimagining of Afro Funk inspirations – with a nice lean sound that's more small combo than "orchestra"! Titles include "One For Ry", "Under The Sun", "Sisters & Brothers", "Three Tigers & Three Baby Tigers", "Soil Festivities", and "Mama Africa". (Global Grooves, Deep Funk) LP, Vinyl record album

AntibalasWhere The Gods Are At Peace ... LP
Daptone, 2017. New Copy ... $14.99 17.98
Maybe the most searing album we've ever heard from Antibalas – a set that's completely on fire from the very first note, both musically and politically – and which burns with an intensity that seems to blow away all their previous music! Make no mistake, we've always loved these guys – but this time around, there's an urgency that really grabs us – maybe because of the political climate in which the set was recorded, or maybe just because these guys always keep growing and maturing, where so many other similar combos are just content to stick in the same territory. The lead vocals by Duke Amayo are incredible – with a righteous power that demands to be heard – and the horns are more creative and colorful than ever, with some fantastic solos on the album's very long tracks. And of course, the grooves are great – that blend of riffing guitars and percussion that Antibalas have updated from 70s Afro Funk – on titles that include the three-part "Tombstown" suite, plus "Hook & Crook" and "Gold Rush". Charles BradleyBlack Velvet ... LP
Dunham/Daptone, 2016. New Copy ... $15.99 18.99
The great Charles Bradley left this planet all too soon – and although we've got this final album of music to enjoy, it's only a partial consolation for Bradley's early departure! The set's maybe a bit like some of the albums of Otis Redding material that were issued after his passing – in that there's some cuts here that were singles, mixed with unissued songs that really show Bradley on top of his game – working strongly with the Menehan Street Band at a level that really has us wanting more! Some of these tunes have a sharply righteous vibe – maybe even more edge than before from Charles – which makes the whole thing not just a completely essential addition to his catalog, but also a way of pointing towards a future that might have been. Titles include "Can't Fight The Feeling", "Luv Jones", "I Feel A Change", "Black Velvet", "Fly Little Girl", "Victim Of Love (electric version)", "Slip Away", and "Heart Of Gold". Brownout Presents – Brown SabbathBrown Sabbath 2 ... LP
Ubiquity, 2016. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
A sweet return to Brown Sabbath territory – that wicked blend of deep funk rhythms and fuzzy guitar, served up by the Brownout collective! The groove has some of the Latin elements that you'd know from Adrian Quesada's other work – but the rising guitar lines dominate a lot more – as do the horns, which crest nicely above the music, to ensure that there's a bit more soul here than on the original Black Sabbath versions of the songs! Yet the vocals by Alex Marrero are also sometimes right in Ozzy territory – which brings things back to base a bit – making for one of the most unusual takes on the music of Black Sabbath you'll ever hope to hear. Titles include "Fairies Wear Boots", "Snowblind", "Supernaut", "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath", "Sweet Leaf", "Electric Funeral", and "Children Of The Grave". LP, Vinyl record album

Budos BandBurnt Offering ... LP
Daptone, 2014. New Copy Gatefold ... $14.99 17.98
Some of the deepest, heaviest work we've ever heard from the Budos Band – as you might guess from the album's dark title and cover! There's a bit of a heavy metal look to the package, but the sounds within are still the righteous funk we've always loved from Budos – yet are also inflected with a very slight bit of trippy elements this time around – a touch of fuzz on the guitar, or cosmic echoes on the keyboards – which really balance out strongly with the group's bold horns and razor-sharp drums! The slight changes make for a more sinister sound than before, and show that these guys continue to be one of the most forward-thinking funk bands around – never content to just rest on the laurels of their great musicianship, but always leaping ahead with new ideas. Titles include "Shattered Winds", "Black Hills", "Magus Mountain", "Into The Fog", "The Sticks", "Burnt Offering", and "Turn & Burn". LP, Vinyl record album
