Throttle Elevator Music with Kamasi WashingtonThrottle Elevator Music IV ... LP
Wide Hive, 2016. New Copy ... $12.99 16.99
The best album so far from Throttle Elevator music – thanks to some fantastic saxophone from Kamasai Washington! The group was always pretty good before – but this time around, they really rise above their past – and also have Washington handling all the arrangements on the record, which gives them a spiritual sound we never would have expected! Core group members include Gregory Howe and Matt Montgomery on guitars and piano, Mike Hughes on drums, and Erik Jekabson on flugelhorn and trumpet – but the presence of Washington is what really seals the deal, on tracks that include "Gibraltar Road", "We Can Work With That", "Sweet Spot", "No One To Vote For", "Boeske Trail", and "Throwing The Switch". Throttle Elevator Music feat Kamasi WashingtonFinal Floor ... LP
Wide Hive, 2021. New Copy ... $12.99 16.99
We certainly hope this isn't the final floor for Throttle Elevator Music, as we've always enjoyed the many sounds the group has given us over the years – styles served up here on a record that's almost a testament to the collaborative growth of the ensemble over the past decade or so, as the album brings together recordings made over various years, with new work added in recently to complete the set! As usual, Gregory Howe is at the core – handling most of the arrangements and overseeing the recording, with equal help from longtime musical partner Matt Montgomery on bass – opening up into a lineup that also includes Kamasi Washington on tenor, Erik Jekabson on trumpet, Kasey Knudsen on alto and tenor, and Mike Blankenship on a bit of Farfisa organ! You can definitely feel Washington's presence when he's on a session, but the overall sound of the record is equally nice – a real evolution of the group's sound from the start, maybe served up in part by the more recent touches added to the mix by Howe. Titles include "Supraliminal Space", "Caste Off", "Daggerboard", "Ice Windows", "Rooftop Sunrise", "Return To Form", "Heart Of Hearing", and "Recirculate". (Jazz, Deep Funk) LP, Vinyl record album

Throttle Elevator Music feat Kamasi WashingtonRetrorespective ... LP
Wide Hive, 2017. New Copy ... $11.99 16.99
Not a retrospective of the music of Throttle Elevator Music – as you might mistake from the title – but instead a fresh new album that features the group working tremendously with the mighty Kamasai Washington! Washington isn't just a guest, but a key member of the group – and he really helps to push forward that deepening sound they've developed since their first release – a huge evolution that only gets better when Kamasai's on board. Washington plays tenor on the record, and contributes songs and arrangements – and some of the vibe of the set is maybe a small combo take on territory he explored on The Epic album – proud and righteous, with a very uplifting spirit. Other group members include Erik Jekabson on flugelhorn and trumpet, Ava Mendoza on guitar, Matt Mongtomery on bass and piano, and Thomas McCree on drums – and producer Gregory Howe also contributes songs and arrangements. Titles include "Flux & Solder", "Liminality", "Playing The Alleyway", "February Drift", "Subtract Limited", and "Rapid Rotation". (Jazz, Deep Funk) LP, Vinyl record album

Lack Of AfroMusic For Adverts ... CD
Freestyle (UK), 2014. Used ... $11.99
Lack Of Afro are back, and fiercer than ever before – really evolved from just a name known for funky remixes and dancefloor grooves, and stepping forward strongly into a much more well-rounded, deeply soulful group! The title's a reference to older Brit sound library albums, but the overall feel of the record is more soul-oriented than previous work by the group – making use of some especially strong lead vocals from Jack Tyson-Charles on about half the album's tracks, and mixing other singers and instrumental modes on all the others. The tunes are all pretty upbeat and bouncy – a mix of 60s and 70s styles, jumbled up in a way that's playful and catchy, yet still with plenty of funk appeal too. Titles include "No Guts No Glory", "Freedom", "One For The Trouble", "Recipe For Love", "Coco", "The Gypsy", "Here We Go Again", and "Missing Me". CD

VariousThis Is Melting Pot Music – Compiled By DJ Olski ... CD
Melting Pot (Germany), 2006. Used ... $8.99
Melting Pot Music is funky funky music – a great spot where straight instrumental funk resonates equally with loop-based remakes – served up with an intensity that really matches the spirit of the classics from the late 60s and early 70s, but also with a playful and youthful feel that's almost even better! The vibe here is strongly in the Quantic/Tru Thoughts mode – and like that work, there's a real respect for the older analogue sounds of the past – styles that are sometimes played live by core funky combos, and other times reworked from older records in great new ways! Titles include "Hip N Soul Shake" by The Malcouns, "We Getting Down" by Soul Village, "I Give You My Life" by Vietnam Veterans, "Soul 69" by A-Ko, "All Hail The Queen" by Queen Eve & The Kings, "Everybody Loves The Sunshine" by Soul Village, "Four Hills" by DJ Day, "Massak Theme" by Massak, "Cafone Going" by Devil McDoom, "Untitled" by A-Ko, "Peacock Strut" by Lefties Soul Connection, and "Horny Pipin Bats (DC mix)" by Imperial Breed. VariousVintage League Music Family Album Vol 1 ... LP
Vintage League, 2020. New Copy ... $18.99 19.99
A set that bills itself as "brand new original authentic soul music", but which maybe offers up more than that too – as there's also a fair bit of instrumental funk in the mix, served up by an array of up-and-comers, and some crucial talents you'll recognize from years back! The variety is nicely appreciated – there's no overarching label style here, and instead the groups are really allowed to do their own thing – in tight combos, larger ensembles, and with a mix of lead instruments that include guitar, organ, and plenty of keyboards. Titles include "High 45" by Alan Evans Trio, "Hey" by The Natural Soul", "What Will You Do" by BT ALC Big Band with John Medeski, "Slammin" by Kris Yunker, "In Comes Slade" by Crushed Velvet & The Velveteers, "Helping Hand" by Johnny Trama & The B3 Kings, and "A Little Bit Of Sunshine" by Brother Goodlove. Third Root Music, 2020. New Copy ... $21.99
Knowledge-heavy hip hop from the Texas trio of Easy Lee, MexStep, and DJ Chicken George – working here with some heavy help from a lineup of guests that includes Black Pumas and Grupo Fantasma! Producer Adrian Quesada, the powerhouse between those two acts, is on hand as producer for a fair bit of the record – bringing in his special blend of funk and soul roots, with that genre-stepping quality he's known for – perfect here for the conscious rhymes of Third Root. The whole thing hearkens back to an early 90s level of edutainment – and features additional production from El Dusty, and guest work from Madine and Kam Franklin too. Titles include "Born To Rhyme", "Spring Groove", "The Next Kendrick", "BBG", "MexStep 4 President", "Summer Groove", "Fantasma Horns", and "The Last Triumvirate". AntibalasFu Chronicles (with download) ... LP
Daptone, 2020. New Copy ... $18.99 19.99
Antibalas take a page from the Wu-Tang book, and add a little kung fu action to their music – with results that maybe make this set one of their freshest in years! All the core energy of the group is very firmly in place – that razor-sharp instrumentation that's made these guys one of the best funky groups on the planet for over 20 years, and which also still makes Antibalas head and shoulders above some of the groups that sprung up in their wake – and this time around, the lyrical themes are nicely expanded, so that the vocals have as much dynamic energy as the horns and Afro Funk percussion – almost with this narrative approach that furthers the message in the music. Titles include "Lai Lai", "Fight Am Finish", "Koto", "Amenawon", and "Mttt (parts 1 & 2)". (Global Grooves, Deep Funk) LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ AntibalasWhere The Gods Are At Peace ... LP
Daptone, 2017. New Copy ... $14.99 17.98
Maybe the most searing album we've ever heard from Antibalas – a set that's completely on fire from the very first note, both musically and politically – and which burns with an intensity that seems to blow away all their previous music! Make no mistake, we've always loved these guys – but this time around, there's an urgency that really grabs us – maybe because of the political climate in which the set was recorded, or maybe just because these guys always keep growing and maturing, where so many other similar combos are just content to stick in the same territory. The lead vocals by Duke Amayo are incredible – with a righteous power that demands to be heard – and the horns are more creative and colorful than ever, with some fantastic solos on the album's very long tracks. And of course, the grooves are great – that blend of riffing guitars and percussion that Antibalas have updated from 70s Afro Funk – on titles that include the three-part "Tombstown" suite, plus "Hook & Crook" and "Gold Rush". Bio RitmoLa Verdad ... CD
Electric Cowbell, 2011. Used ... $8.99
Far reaching modern salsa and Latin grooves from Bio Ritmo – perhaps their best stuff yet! The group has been impressive all along, but they've progressively gotten better and better, really developing into one of the most exciting and least pigeonhole-able modern groups out there. The diverse elements flow naturally, which is really not an easy thing to pull off for a group that clearly cherishes Latin and Latin-American musical forbears very deeply. They brilliantly blend 70s salsa and Latin funk with a heavy, raw rhythmic and percussive underbelly, impassioned lead and group vocals, terse brass blasts, weird bits of keyboards and other unpredictable touches that firmly root them in the here and now. Titles include "La Verdad", "Dina's Mambo", "La Muralla", "Carnaval", "Majadero", "Verguenza", "Caravana Del Vejigante" and "Lola's Dilemma". (Latin, Deep Funk) CD

Bo-KeysGot To Get Back ... CD
Electraphonic, 2011. Used ... $9.99
The great second album from The Bo-Keys – the stellar Memphis combo that's a mix of younger players and veteran session musicians from of the vaunted Hi Records scene of the classic era – who deliver a straight up knockout with Got To Get Back! We dug the group's earlier work, but this one really raises the bar. It's not so much a throwback to the late 60s and 70s golden era of Memphis and other points southern soul as it is a modern statement on the sounds longevity – committed with the purest authenticity. There's funky and smouldering soul instrumentals and vocal numbers with an incredible lineup of guests – including the great Otis Clay, plus Percy Wiggins, William Bell and Charlie Musselwhite. They work equally great in a number of modes, too. Titles include "Hi Roller", "Jack And Ginger", "Sundown On Beale", "90 Days Same As Cash", "Cauley Flower", "Got To Get Back (To My Baby)" with Otis Clay, "Weak Spot" with William Bell, "Catch This Teardrop" with Percy Wiggins and more. BongolianHarlem Hipshake ... CD
Blow Up (UK), 2020. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
The Bongolian outs himself as a one-man operation on the cover of this cooking little album – but that's OK with us, as Nasser Bouzida more than serves up the goods on a mix of percussion, guitar, Fender Rhodes, and Hammond – all with the heavy old school funk touches that have made his previous records so great! There's a bit of help on horns along the way – but Nasser keeps the grooves nice and lean throughout, with the kind of focus on conga and bongo parts that have made his music a 21st Century answer to the sound of the Incredible Bongo Band – funky, soulful, and really outta sight! Titles include "Soul Drums On 110th Street", "West Side Stories", "Mojito Time Baby", "Give The Drummer Some", "Tito's Payoff", "Do You Like It Like That", and "LSD Got A Hold On Me". CD

Miles BonnyLumberjack Soul 2 ... CD
Innate Sounds, 2021. New Copy ... $9.99
It's been almost a decade since the first Lumberjack Soul album from Miles Bonny – and in that time, he's grown tremendously – both as a singer and musician, and as an artist who's really in command of his sound! Miles' voice still has the raspy charm we loved before, but the overall setting is far richer and more complex – maybe in a way that owes a lot more to jazz than before, although still with just the right inflections of beats – which are balanced with all these really creative sonic touches from Bonny – shapes and sounds from trumpet, piano, moog, and some other sources that are a bit hard to figure out – mixed together wonderfully. Titles include "Day Alone", "Go With The Sun", "In This World", "Soulful Melodies", "Release & Expand", "Wantu", and "Mother Of Love". CD

Charles BradleyBlack Velvet ... LP
Dunham/Daptone, 2016. New Copy ... $15.99 18.99
The great Charles Bradley left this planet all too soon – and although we've got this final album of music to enjoy, it's only a partial consolation for Bradley's early departure! The set's maybe a bit like some of the albums of Otis Redding material that were issued after his passing – in that there's some cuts here that were singles, mixed with unissued songs that really show Bradley on top of his game – working strongly with the Menehan Street Band at a level that really has us wanting more! Some of these tunes have a sharply righteous vibe – maybe even more edge than before from Charles – which makes the whole thing not just a completely essential addition to his catalog, but also a way of pointing towards a future that might have been. Titles include "Can't Fight The Feeling", "Luv Jones", "I Feel A Change", "Black Velvet", "Fly Little Girl", "Victim Of Love (electric version)", "Slip Away", and "Heart Of Gold". The Brooks have one hell of a drummer in the group – Maxime Bellavance, who's also credited as "Maestro Rhythm King" – and his sharp work on the kit really keeps things sharp throughout, as this Canadian funk combo make their way through a surprisingly strong array of 70s funk modes! The vibe is even more sophisticated than their previous record – with a nice blacksploitation sense of scope, even while things stay funky – more musical elements, and even some nice orchestrations – all held strongly in place by the funky drums! Ubiquity, 2016. New Copy ... $13.99 19.98
A sweet return to Brown Sabbath territory – that wicked blend of deep funk rhythms and fuzzy guitar, served up by the Brownout collective! The groove has some of the Latin elements that you'd know from Adrian Quesada's other work – but the rising guitar lines dominate a lot more – as do the horns, which crest nicely above the music, to ensure that there's a bit more soul here than on the original Black Sabbath versions of the songs! Yet the vocals by Alex Marrero are also sometimes right in Ozzy territory – which brings things back to base a bit – making for one of the most unusual takes on the music of Black Sabbath you'll ever hope to hear. Phil Cohran & The Hypnotic Brass EnsembleKelan Philip Cohran & The Hypnotic Brass Ensemble ... LP
Honest Jons (UK), 2012. New Copy 2LP ... $24.99
An amazing bit of music – and an incredible document of generations of creative jazz energy as well! The legendary Phil Cohran teams up here with Hypnotic Brass Ensemble – a collective made up of Cohran's sons, who follow strongly in the rich legacy of his own Artistic Heritage group – yet in a very different way! Hypnotic Brass have caught the ear of many during their bright rise to fame – with a fluid, horn-heavy groove that's really amazing – echoes of Sun Ra and other Chicago creative legends – yet played almost entirely on brass instruments, which gives them an even bolder vibe. Here, working with their progenitor brings the group even more depth than before – an excellent sound that really spins things out wonderfully – percussion layered underneath the horns, solos taking jazzy flight, and an overall righteous vibe that holds things together beautifully. The album's way more than the sum of its parts – and those parts are already rich indeed – and titles include "Stateville", "Cuernavaca", "Ancestral", "Spin", "Zincali", "Apsara", and "Frankincense & Myrrh". The lineup's nice and jazzy, too – and features lots of tenor work from Timo Lassy, next to vibes, trumpet, guitar, and warm lines on both Hammond organ and Wurlitzer piano – all with a feel that's part funk, part soundtrack – yet served up in the best Schema way, which means that things go far past just being a retro rehash of the past! The record brings in more 80s styles than we've heard from Kylie before – some keyboards and beats that bubble and turn nicely with the catchy lyrics of the tunes – and, in a way, it might almost seem like the singer is even better suited to music like this than some of the harder funk that got her going in the first place!
