Abstract OrchestraMadvillain Vol 1 (with bonus download) ... LP
ATA (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $23.99 24.98
Here's a record that goes straight to the heart of the music of Madlib – not just his Madvillain collaboration with MF Doom, but all the great jazziness he's brought to his many projects over the years! The set's all instrumental – a larger jazz ensemble taking off on tunes previously recorded by Madvillain – but really transforming them with a funky flair, maybe partly a modern update on the way that older school bands used to serve up their own renderings of funk and soul tunes back in the 70s! The vibe here is more contemporary overall, though – and maybe a bit more complex – as the live drums and bass really open things up, while four saxes, three trumpets, and four trombones really create some great colors over the top. There's keyboards on most numbers, and titles include "Madmix 1", "Great Day", "All Caps", "Curls", "Fancy Clown", "Raid", and "Accordion". LP, Vinyl record album

Abstract OrchestraMadvillain Vol 2 ... CD
ATA (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $14.99
A really great take on the music of Madvillain – that famous collaboration between Madlib & MF Doom – served up here in a mostly instrumental mode that's heavy on funk and jazz! You'll definitely recognize the tunes in the set, but the presentation is very different – almost as if someone's gone back to the music, stripped it down to core samples, then worked those back up again with a new sort of energy! The group's directed by Rob Mitchell – clearly the genius behind the whole project – and solos are by James Russell on tenor and flute, Simon Bobby Beddoe on trumpet, Jim Corry on alto, and George Cooper on piano and keyboards. Titles include "Meat Grinder", "Eye", "Figaro", "Can't Reform Em", "Madmix 3", "Rainbows", "Fire In The Hole", "Rhinestone Cowboy", "Operation Lifesaver", and "Borrowed Time". CD

AntibalasAntibalas (with download) ... LP
Daptone, 2012. New Copy ... $15.99 19.99
Amazing sounds from one of the best funky combos anywhere – ever! Antibalas have certainly risen to fame in the years since we first heard their Afro-styled grooves – working famously in the Fela musical, and reaching generations of ears with their own brilliant records. Yet throughout it all, they've always stayed true to their sound – and, if anything, are even sharper, tighter, and funkier than before – all extremely adept not only at playing their instruments, but at hitting the right sort of sound to cut through all the BS that was holding back funky Afro grooves for years! Part of that sound comes from superb Daptone production by Gabriel Roth – who really knows how to keep things lean and mean and full of energy. But the core credit really goes to the group – who never cease to amaze us here – and continually come up with fresh sounds on their keyboards and horns – and inventive rhythms to match! Titles include "Dirty Money", "The Rat Catcher", "Ari Degbe", "Ibeji", "Sare Kon Kon", and "Him Belly No Go Sweet". (Global Grooves, Deep Funk) LP, Vinyl record album

AntibalasWhere The Gods Are At Peace ... CD
Daptone, 2017. Used ... $5.99
Maybe the most searing album we've ever heard from Antibalas – a set that's completely on fire from the very first note, both musically and politically – and which burns with an intensity that seems to blow away all their previous music! Make no mistake, we've always loved these guys – but this time around, there's an urgency that really grabs us – maybe because of the political climate in which the set was recorded, or maybe just because these guys always keep growing and maturing, where so many other similar combos are just content to stick in the same territory. The lead vocals by Duke Amayo are incredible – with a righteous power that demands to be heard – and the horns are more creative and colorful than ever, with some fantastic solos on the album's very long tracks. And of course, the grooves are great – that blend of riffing guitars and percussion that Antibalas have updated from 70s Afro Funk – on titles that include the three-part "Tombstown" suite, plus "Hook & Crook" and "Gold Rush". Bacao Rhythm & Steel BandBacao Rhythm & Steel Band ... CD
Big Crown, 2016. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A fantastic full length set from the Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band – a group who've really won us over in recent years with a fast flurry of funky 45s! The group take an older steel band sound, and forge it to a might tighter rhythmic impulse – with a sound that's often even funkier than the best (and few) funky steel band tracks from the 70s – served up with razor-sharp instrumentation, and great production in a Daptone/Soul Fire mode – which really keeps things sounding raw all the way through! The group's got strong ties to the Mighty Mocambos – and some other contemporary funk acts too – and the music is top-shelf all the way through, a funkier full steel band record than you'll ever hope to find. Titles include "Beetham Highway Ride", "Scorpio", "Pimp", "Tropical Heat", "Laventille Road March", "Round & Round", "Port Of Spain Hustle", "Jungle Fever", "Love Like This", and "Dog Was A Doughnut". Charles BradleyBlack Velvet ... CD
Dunham/Daptone, 2018. New Copy ... $12.99 13.99
The great Charles Bradley left this planet all too soon – and although we've got this final album of music to enjoy, it's only a partial consolation for Bradley's early departure! The set's maybe a bit like some of the albums of Otis Redding material that were issued after his passing – in that there's some cuts here that were singles, mixed with unissued songs that really show Bradley on top of his game – working strongly with the Menehan Street Band at a level that really has us wanting more! Some of these tunes have a sharply righteous vibe – maybe even more edge than before from Charles – which makes the whole thing not just a completely essential addition to his catalog, but also a way of pointing towards a future that might have been. Titles include "Can't Fight The Feeling", "Luv Jones", "I Feel A Change", "Black Velvet", "Fly Little Girl", "Victim Of Love (electric version)", "Slip Away", and "Heart Of Gold". CD

Charles BradleyVictim Of Love (with bonus download) ... LP
Dunham/Daptone, 2013. New Copy ... $13.99 15.99
Damn amazing work from Charles Bradley – an instant soul classic for all generations, as you'll hear from the very first note! Not only are Bradley's vocals incredible – the kind of once-in-a-long-time approach he brought to his debut – but the backings and production are completely sublime too – magical music from the Menahan Street Band, who sound here like some lost combo from 60s Memphis, but without any of the hoke that reference might imply – instead that really unique approach that you'd only find on one of your few favorite vintage soul albums – maybe Bobby Taylor & The Vancouvers, or Jesse James on his 60s album for 20th Century! Yet the sound here isn't just vintage for vintage sake, either – as there's an intensity that's very present, contemporary, and urgent – a sound that doesn't die – and which just gets better and better with each new listen. Tremendous stuff – even from the Daptone universe we've been loving for years and years – with titles that include "Strictly Reserved For You", "You Put The Flame On It", "Dusty Blue", "Love Bug Blues", "Hurricane", "Through The Storm", "Confusion", and "Where Do We Go From Here". BreakestraHit The Floor ... LP
Ubiquity, 2005. New Copy 2LP ... $14.99 19.98
A strong step forward from Breakestra – really moving out of the deep funk underground here, but never losing the groove that got them there in the first place! The set's got a depth that goes beyond most of the group's other work – way more than just a funky cover band sort of feel, and instead a really unified approach to grooving that lets in space for stronger influences from a range of older styles of music. Mainman Miles really surprises us on vocals, coming off here with a wonderful blue-eyed approach to funk that takes us back to key rock/soul crossover moments of the late 60s – but with none of the overdone hype of that generation, and more of a funky 45 groove overall! Drums are razor-sharp and super-tight throughout – still giving most of the album a deep funk approach – and titles include "Gotta Let Me Know", "Stand Up", "Hiding", "Burgundy Blues", "You Don't Need A Dance", "At The End Of The Day", "The Getting To It", "Show & Prove", "Keep On Playin", "Recognize", "Hit Tha Flo", "Family Rap", and "How Do You Really Feel". King Britt/Philadelphia ExperimentKing Britt Presents Philadelphia Experiment Remixed ... CD
Ropeadope, 2002. Used ... $6.99
An incredible record – far greater than we even expected! The setup is simple: King Britt and his crew remix the tapes from 2001's experimental jazz jam session by a trio of fellow Philadelphians – drummer Ahmir Thompson (The Roots), jazz bassist Christian McBride, and keyboardist Uri Caine. Britt's really blown his top here – taking the original album (great in its own right), and turning it into a set of cosmic grooves that bear almost no relation to the initial work, yet still keep its soulful heart. The depth of the project is stunning – way more than just simple remix tricks, and a whole new level of expression that shows why Philly is fast becoming the music capitol of the 21st Century. Includes work by Rob Yancey, Charlie Dark, Phillip Charles, Oba Funke, Vikter Duplaix, The Randy Weston Experience, DJ Ghe, and Britt himself – with titles that include "South Street", "Paul Edwards The Orange Line (lle lfe)", "(Re)Moved (Oba Funke Far Re-Moved dub)", "Diamond Street", "Philadelphia Experiment (rmx)", "Delaware Avenue", "Miles Hit (Rob Life mix)", "Broad & Cecil B Moore", "Brown Street", and "Groover The III (the theme to massagejawn.com)". ✨✧ BrownoutFear Of A Brown Planet ... LP
Fat Beats, 2018. New Copy ... $15.99 17.98
The Brownout magic turns towards the world of Public Enemy this time around – in a sweet little record that serves up Latin funk instrumentals of PE classics! The music is hardly hip hop – apart from a few turntable scratches and vocal samples – and instead, the groove is deep deep funk, with plenty of Latin elements thrown into the mix – served up with a super-tight blast of horns, lots of riffing guitar, and plenty of heavy percussion! Titles include instrumental remakes of "911 Is A Joke", "Prophets Of Rage", "Fight The Power", "Louder Than A Bomb", "Shut Em Down", "Don't Believe The Hype", and "Welcome To The Terrordome". Burnt Sugar ArkestraTwentieth Anniversary Mixtapes – Groiddest Shizznits Vol 1 ... CD
Avantgroidd, 2000s/2010s. New Copy ... $12.99
A fantastic 20th anniversary celebration of Burnt Sugar – one of the most righteous, forward-thinking ensembles of the past few decades – some of the first proponents of a 21st Century sound that now seems to be flowing from many other corners! Yet these guys are still unlike anyone else we can think of – maybe a jazz ensemble at the core, but one that's keenly aware of soul, funk, and hip hop – and not afraid to allow any of those elements equal play in their music – almost as if Duke Ellington grew up in the 90s, listening to electric Miles Davis, Tribe Called Quest, and Curtis Mayfield – then found a way to expand larger musical ideas based on influences that diverse. Greg Tate founded the group, and directs with bassist Jared Michael Nickerson – and this series of three CDs is dedicated to bringing back some of the group's best work, much of which has gone out of print in recent years. Guests on this first album include Matana Roberts and Capt Kirk Douglas – and titles include "Mazzafrique", "If There's A Hell Below", "Sandpiper", "Kirk Bit My Hand", "Crazy In The Dark", "The Crepescularium", "Wretched Of The Earth Page 88", and "4.29.92". Afro Latin Vintage OrchestraPulsion ... LP
Ubiquity, 2014. Near Mint- 2LP ... $13.99
A darker groove than usual from this hip European combo – a record that still has their commitment to global sounds at its core, but which also comes across with these great 70s electric modes too – almost echoes of Dark Magus Miles Davis and Sextant Herbie Hancock – thanks to loads of cool keyboards and fuzzed-out production! The acoustic elements resonate wonderfully with the electric ones – so that percussion, bass, horns, and strings add a rich organic level next to the guitar, Fender Rhodes, and Wurlitzer – blending beautifully with a musical vision that really surprises us, given the earlier work from this group – a much richer sound, and one that's got us loving them way more than before. Titles include "Kagemusha", "Rituel", "Pulsion", "Complot", "Shaman", "Drama", "En Sursis", "Code Panthera", "French Connexion", "Homo Analog", and "Resurrection". Tanika CharlesGumption ... LP
Record Kicks (Italy), 2019. New Copy ... $23.99 24.98
Tina Charles has plenty of gumption – just the right kind of persistence that's going to make her a soul singer to watch in years to come! Charles starts out in the territory of a female vocalist working with a funk band – but she also brings a lot more to her music than just straight support of retro modes – a richness that partly comes from her willingness to experiment a bit more with the overall sound, which often includes tweaks on older funk or soul modes – while her own vocals still get strong play right down the middle! The record has a great way of collapsing the space between decades, but without making things feel slavish at all – and all tunes are Charles originals, with titles that include "Dans Les Nuages", "Cool Scorpio", "Love Overdue", "Going Home", "Upside Down", "Cadillac Moon", and "Look At Us Now".
