✨✧ Throttle Elevator Music with Kamasi WashingtonThrottle Elevator Music IV ... LP
Wide Hive, 2016. New Copy ... $12.99
The best album so far from Throttle Elevator music – thanks to some fantastic saxophone from Kamasai Washington! The group was always pretty good before – but this time around, they really rise above their past – and also have Washington handling all the arrangements on the record, which gives them a spiritual sound we never would have expected! Core group members include Gregory Howe and Matt Montgomery on guitars and piano, Mike Hughes on drums, and Erik Jekabson on flugelhorn and trumpet – but the presence of Washington is what really seals the deal, on tracks that include "Gibraltar Road", "We Can Work With That", "Sweet Spot", "No One To Vote For", "Boeske Trail", and "Throwing The Switch". ✨✧ Throttle Elevator Music feat Kamasi WashingtonRetrorespective ... CD
Wide Hive, 2016. New Copy ... $9.99
Not a retrospective of the music of Throttle Elevator Music – as you might mistake from the title – but instead a fresh new album that features the group working tremendously with the mighty Kamasai Washington! Washington isn't just a guest, but a key member of the group – and he really helps to push forward that deepening sound they've developed since their first release – a huge evolution that only gets better when Kamasai's on board. Washington plays tenor on the record, and contributes songs and arrangements – and some of the vibe of the set is maybe a small combo take on territory he explored on The Epic album – proud and righteous, with a very uplifting spirit. Other group members include Erik Jekabson on flugelhorn and trumpet, Ava Mendoza on guitar, Matt Mongtomery on bass and piano, and Thomas McCree on drums – and producer Gregory Howe also contributes songs and arrangements. Titles include "Flux & Solder", "Liminality", "Playing The Alleyway", "February Drift", "Subtract Limited", and "Rapid Rotation". (Jazz, Deep Funk) CD

Shawn Lee's Ping Pong OrchestraMusic & Rhythm – Ubiquity Studio Sessions Vol 1 ... CD
Ubiquity, 2004. Used ... $6.99
Heavy funk from Shawn Lee – known best in recent years for his stunning production work, but really stepping out here as a funky artist in his own right! Shawn's been sneaking out some killer singles over the past few years, but this set's his first really full funky outing – a blistering array of tracks that pays tribute to the Sound Library sound of DeWolfe, KPM, and other classic labels from the 60s and 70s. Most tracks are short and thematic, with sweet funky elements that include electric sitar, fuzzed-up guitar, echoey percussion, snapping drum breaks, and burning organ and keyboard bits! The whole thing comes across extremely well – very very classic-sounding, without any gimmicks or tricks – just a cold, stone, simple batch of funk tracks, served up with perfect production! Titles include "Sexy Beast", "Bollywood", "Italian Stallion", "King Conga", "Drum Monkey", "Spytown", "El Duce", "Organ Grinder", "Scorpion", "Sammy's Theme", and "Boss Bossa". CD

AntibalasAntibalas (with download) ... LP
Daptone, 2012. New Copy ... $15.99 19.99
Amazing sounds from one of the best funky combos anywhere – ever! Antibalas have certainly risen to fame in the years since we first heard their Afro-styled grooves – working famously in the Fela musical, and reaching generations of ears with their own brilliant records. Yet throughout it all, they've always stayed true to their sound – and, if anything, are even sharper, tighter, and funkier than before – all extremely adept not only at playing their instruments, but at hitting the right sort of sound to cut through all the BS that was holding back funky Afro grooves for years! Part of that sound comes from superb Daptone production by Gabriel Roth – who really knows how to keep things lean and mean and full of energy. But the core credit really goes to the group – who never cease to amaze us here – and continually come up with fresh sounds on their keyboards and horns – and inventive rhythms to match! Titles include "Dirty Money", "The Rat Catcher", "Ari Degbe", "Ibeji", "Sare Kon Kon", and "Him Belly No Go Sweet". (Global Grooves, Deep Funk) LP, Vinyl record album

AntibalasFu Chronicles ... CD
Daptone, 2019. New Copy ... $12.99 13.99
Antibalas take a page from the Wu-Tang book, and add a little kung fu action to their music – with results that maybe make this set one of their freshest in years! All the core energy of the group is very firmly in place – that razor-sharp instrumentation that's made these guys one of the best funky groups on the planet for over 20 years, and which also still makes Antibalas head and shoulders above some of the groups that sprung up in their wake – and this time around, the lyrical themes are nicely expanded, so that the vocals have as much dynamic energy as the horns and Afro Funk percussion – almost with this narrative approach that furthers the message in the music. Titles include "Lai Lai", "Fight Am Finish", "Koto", "Amenawon", and "Mttt (parts 1 & 2)". CD features the bonus track "Fist Of Flowers". (Global Grooves, Deep Funk) CD

AntibalasWhere The Gods Are At Peace ... LP
Daptone, 2017. New Copy ... $14.99 17.98
Maybe the most searing album we've ever heard from Antibalas – a set that's completely on fire from the very first note, both musically and politically – and which burns with an intensity that seems to blow away all their previous music! Make no mistake, we've always loved these guys – but this time around, there's an urgency that really grabs us – maybe because of the political climate in which the set was recorded, or maybe just because these guys always keep growing and maturing, where so many other similar combos are just content to stick in the same territory. The lead vocals by Duke Amayo are incredible – with a righteous power that demands to be heard – and the horns are more creative and colorful than ever, with some fantastic solos on the album's very long tracks. And of course, the grooves are great – that blend of riffing guitars and percussion that Antibalas have updated from 70s Afro Funk – on titles that include the three-part "Tombstown" suite, plus "Hook & Crook" and "Gold Rush". ✨✧ Bacao Rhythm & Steel BandBacao Rhythm & Steel Band ... CD
Big Crown, 2016. Used ... $6.99
A fantastic full length set from the Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band – a group who've really won us over in recent years with a fast flurry of funky 45s! The group take an older steel band sound, and forge it to a might tighter rhythmic impulse – with a sound that's often even funkier than the best (and few) funky steel band tracks from the 70s – served up with razor-sharp instrumentation, and great production in a Daptone/Soul Fire mode – which really keeps things sounding raw all the way through! The group's got strong ties to the Mighty Mocambos – and some other contemporary funk acts too – and the music is top-shelf all the way through, a funkier full steel band record than you'll ever hope to find. Titles include "Beetham Highway Ride", "Scorpio", "Pimp", "Tropical Heat", "Laventille Road March", "Round & Round", "Port Of Spain Hustle", "Jungle Fever", "Love Like This", and "Dog Was A Doughnut". BlassicsTogetherness ... LP
Odd Funk (Netherlands), 2019. New Copy (reissue)... $28.99
A funky combo who draw heavily on elements from Ethiopian music – so much so that most of the album's titles are also written in Ethiopian script! The core instrumentalists are Finnish, and work together in a great blend of older Ethio roots and leaner contemporary funk – mixing heavy percussion with horns, bass, and lots of riffing guitar – all accompanied by vocals from singer Mikiyas Getachew, aka MikiMac – whose presence really helps give the songs a focus! The core founders of the group are guitarist Juha Sarkkola and trumpeter Turre Tammi – but the whole thing is definitely a strong ensemble affair – on titles that include "Yeselalewa", "Hagerun Geleba", "In A Sincere Way", "Nurona Bilhatu", "Why Is The Chicken Running", and "Block Hipat". BreakestraHit The Floor ... LP
Ubiquity, 2005. New Copy 2LP ... $14.99 19.98
A strong step forward from Breakestra – really moving out of the deep funk underground here, but never losing the groove that got them there in the first place! The set's got a depth that goes beyond most of the group's other work – way more than just a funky cover band sort of feel, and instead a really unified approach to grooving that lets in space for stronger influences from a range of older styles of music. Mainman Miles really surprises us on vocals, coming off here with a wonderful blue-eyed approach to funk that takes us back to key rock/soul crossover moments of the late 60s – but with none of the overdone hype of that generation, and more of a funky 45 groove overall! Drums are razor-sharp and super-tight throughout – still giving most of the album a deep funk approach – and titles include "Gotta Let Me Know", "Stand Up", "Hiding", "Burgundy Blues", "You Don't Need A Dance", "At The End Of The Day", "The Getting To It", "Show & Prove", "Keep On Playin", "Recognize", "Hit Tha Flo", "Family Rap", and "How Do You Really Feel". Burnt Sugar ArkestraTwentieth Anniversary Mixtapes – Groiddest Shizznits Vol 2 ... CD
Avantgroidd, 2000s/2010s. New Copy ... $12.99
A fantastic 20th anniversary celebration of Burnt Sugar – one of the most righteous, forward-thinking ensembles of the past few decades – some of the first proponents of a 21st Century sound that now seems to be flowing from many other corners! Yet these guys are still unlike anyone else we can think of – maybe a jazz ensemble at the core, but one that's keenly aware of soul, funk, and hip hop – and not afraid to allow any of those elements equal play in their music – almost as if Duke Ellington grew up in the 90s, listening to electric Miles Davis, Tribe Called Quest, and Curtis Mayfield – then found a way to expand larger musical ideas based on influences that diverse. Greg Tate founded the group, and directs with bassist Jared Michael Nickerson – and this series of three CDs is dedicated to bringing back some of the group's best work, much of which has gone out of print in recent years. Guests on this second album include JS Williams and Abby Dobson – and titles include "Jungle Fauvre", "Funky Rich Medina", "Driva Man", "All Fall Down", "Night In Tunisia Sorta", "Screamin Arthur Jafa", "Held In Faith", "That Bent Arc Be Slow", and "Somebody To Love You". Calibro 35High Tension Vol 35 – Calibro 35 Plays Lesiman ... LP
AMS (Italy), 2019. New Copy ... $29.99
Maybe one of the coolest records we've ever heard from Calibro 35 – and certainly one of the funkiest – thanks in part to a selection of tracks that are pulled from the catalog of Italian sound library genius Lesiman! The music is very hip – unusual sonic touches alongside tight basslines, great drums, and riffing guitar – all recorded with a mode that seems more open, airy, and inventive than any other Calibro 35 record too! And oddly, even though the group are reaching for a more direct reference to a sound and style they've already been exploring, the whole thing is maybe their most individual album overall – and the group's greatest calling card to date. Titles include "Milano 7", "Play Car", "Players/Bagliori", "Moto Centripeto", "Macchine Nello Spazio", "Schegge", and "Ricognizione Sulle Macerie". LP, Vinyl record album

Coastal CountyCoastal County ... LP
Preservation (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $19.99
Their name and cover may be a bit obscure, but Coastal County do a fantastic job of paying tribute to the glory days of both the sound library and soundscape scene – somehow managing to work together influences from both David Axelrod and the best of the KPM scene! The music is all instrumental, and the tracks have the kind of currents that you'd hear on older UK and EU sound library gems – but there's also a moodier, earthier sense of production – with lots of shadows around the edges, and spooky currents that really give the whole thing a lot of depth – handled with just as much vintage care as the instrumentation – which is filled with funky drums, moody basslines, and just the right amount of fuzz on the guitar.. In a world where so many others claim influence from the old school, but can hardly deliver the right sort of sound, these guys do a superb job – on titles that include "The Chaser", "Holy Monday", "Supra Naturel", "The Landing", "The Drop", and "Cielo Aperto".
