Juliette Pearl has a really charming way with her music – singing in this lightly skipping voice that's perfect for the blend of beats and keyboards in the instrumentation – but also adding in some sweet touches on flute and electronics too! The whole thing's got the sort of sunny Cali vibe you'd guess from the cover and the title – a sweet modern update on old school modes from the AOR generation – but recorded in bedroom studios, which keeps the whole thing from avoiding any too-produced or commercial cliches – and which instead really focuses on the best elements of that moment that some of the younger generation have helped resurrect! A further fantastic pairing of drummer Karriem Riggins and production genius Madlib – a set that really seems to open up the flow of both musicians, with a vibe that's deeper, richer, and more sophisticated than most they've given us in the past – quite a claim, considering the great legacy involved! The record's a great illustration of the way that jazz-meets-hip hop sets have evolved since the earliest days of experiments on Stones Throw and other labels – handled with a real love and understanding of jazz deepened by Madlib's years of creating amazing sounds – and served with a continued crisp crackle from Riggins' inventive work on drums! A damn funky little album – and one of the best Stones Throw albums of the past 20 years! Connie Price & The Keystones are a modern group – but one who's steeped in all the older messed-up funky styles of their Stones Throw labelmates – even some of the offbeat psych and rock that the label has reissued from around the globe! There's a wonderfully tripped-out sound to their work – taking the core instrumentation of funky drums, choppy guitars, smoking keyboards, and soulful sax – and pushing it out with a Stark Reality-ish vibe that really makes the group stand out from the rest of the deep funk underground! A jazzy tribute to the mighty Madlib – one that serves up a swirling mix of vibes, Fender Rhodes, and drums that really remind us of some of his best early side projects in the early days of Stones Throw! The groove is nice and lean, and Fred's at the helm of the group on drums and percussion – playing with this nice sense of splashy echo that really makes the live instrumentation resonate with the kind of beats Madlib might have delivered – while the vibes and keyboards do all sorts of wonderful things too, and the record sparkles from work on saxes and flute as well! Really beautiful stuff, and a record worthy to carry the name of the great one in its title – with tracks that include "Road Of The Lonely Ones", "Catchin The Vibe", "Keeper Of My Soul", "Lakers", "Julani", "Microphone Mathematics", "The Front", and "MHB".
